Rob Ray win by KO Fun
10
After being destroyed by Ray in their first encounter, Webb wants his rematch here, and he actually starts out pretty well, landing some lefts that seem to surprise Ray a bit, but it doesn't stay that way for long. Ray suddenly starts going crazy with the right, flailing away like a madman, but Webb goes off balance and actually avoids major damage for the most part. Webb gets his feet back and they start whipping rights back and forth, and Webb is still hanging in pretty well with Ray here, as they each land some bombs. Then Webb falls to his knees, and this is beginning of the end. Ray pulls his jersey in front of his face, and as Webb tries to get up, Ray nails him with a gigantic right uppercut and Webb crumples to the ice. Ray pumps his fists into the air as he heads to the box, and the crowd goes insane.

The camera then goes to a great shot of a dazed Webb slowly lifting his face off of the ice, with a mouse under his eye and a blank, glassy eyed stare. Webb needs a little help to get off of the ice, but he must have got Ray with at least one, because he also has a small cut next to his left eye.

Great fight with non-stop action and an awesome finish.

Rob Ray win by KO Fun

In the previous season, these two scrappers met in a significant fight. In that 1996-97 battle, Buffalo's Rob Ray hammered New York's Steve Webb and gave him an embarrassing beating, so the Islander is out for revenge here in this game.

Ray and Webb square off near center ice, gloves doffed. Webb gets started first, landing some very good left hands to the face and head of Ray. After taking several stinging punches, Ray seems to get motivated and he fires back with some absolute bombs. Ray was putting all of his power behind these punches.

Somehow, Webb avoids getting cranked by one of those massive haymakers, but he is knocked off-balance for a moment. Webb regains his feet and swings back at Ray, who keeps the right hands flying relentlessly. Webb stumbles and falls forward, and he gets entangled in his own jersey. The sweater comes partially over Webb's head, and this is the beginning of the end for Webb.

Ray pulls the sweater fully over Webb's head and then unleashes a huge right handed uppercut. Ray tried to turn his fist so his knuckles connected, but he didn't do it in time, and the top of fist connected on Webb's face. Two things occurred with this final punch by Ray. First, Webb was knocked out. Secondly, Ray's thumb was badly fractured in two places.

Webb fell forward in a heap on the ice, face down. Ray turns away from his vanquished foe and raises his arms in triumph as he goes to the penalty box. The Buffalo crowd roared in appreciation.

Webb is helped up, but he is definitely dazed and confused; he's got a dark welt on his face and a glassy look in his eyes. Webb is sent to the dressing room, no doubt with a concussion.

Ray is sitting in the penalty box. He has a small cut on his temple that oozes blood and can be seen favoring his right hand. Ray has a concerned look on his face. He tells the linesman, "I fucked up my thumb," and he leaves the penalty box to go to the dressing room. Ray doesn't return to the game. Ray would end up having surgery on his thumb and having some pins inserted to help it heal. He missed over a month of playing.

It was an amazing, brutal fight and a devastating KO win for Ray.

Ray and Webb square off at center ice. Ray grabs Webb's helmet strap and tears it right off. Webb threw a couple lefts while Ray did that and they land. Ray then throws a right which hits Webb and sends his helmet flying. Now they both start firing fast, and furious punches with Ray connecting better as Webb only had a few glancing blows. Ray then throws a huge right which drops Webb to his knees. Ray pulls his jersey over his head and lands a monster uppercut which puts down Webb for good. Awesome fight, even better then there first exchange because this time Ray KO'd him. Ray had a cut next to his left eye indicating that Webb did land a few shots but there is no doubt about who won the fight. Damage was done on both sides by that final uppercut as Webb was dropped by that right and was really stunned by it and he had to go to the dressing room and Ray broke his thumb and he had to have some screws put into it.

Great fight as these two square off at center. Webb tries to suprise Ray with some lefts and catches him off guard a little. Ray then gets the right going knocking off Webb's helmet and hitting him solid a few times. They both go toe to toe with the rights like crazy each really firing them back and forth. Ray comes over the top with a big right to the top of Webb's head making him fall to his knees, then winds up and fires a big right uppercut dropped Webb down hard. Webb is laying on the ice and the referee is tapping him to get his attention. Webb gets up dazed and has a huge bruise on his left eye and is very woozy.

Webb was a willing fighter, but not in Ray's class. Rob owned him and put a bad beating on him here. Steve landed a decent blow, missed a punch, landed a decent connect, and missed a shot. Ray landed a solid punch, missed a blow, and landed an average right. He missed a punch and landed an average blow.

Webb missed a punch and landed an average right. He landed a decent blow, missed a shot, and landed a decent connect. He was swinging away, but he was nowhere the hitter that Ray was. He was going toe-to-toe and it was a risky strategy.

Rob landed a pretty good shot, missed a punch, and landed a good right. He missed a punch. Steve missed a shot, landed a decent blow, and missed a punch. Ray landed a solid connect, missed two punches, and landed a solid blow. Webb was bent over. Rob drilled him with a big uppercut that did a lot of damage and ended the fight.

This was a KO win for Ray. Webb was marked over the left eye. He was dazed and needed assistance to get off the ice.

There's a faceoff in front of the Buffalo Sabres' bench and Steve Webb lines up with Rob Ray there, chirping with both Ray and the Sabres' bench before the puck drops. Webb pokes at Ray and they agree to drop them. Webb and Ray square off and Ray pushes his right sleeve up and gets the elbow pad off before moving in to grab on with Webb. Ray ducks his head while establishing a grip on Webb, pulling the chin strap right off of his helmet in the process. Webb meanwhile, throws four lefts and lands one but loses his grip of Ray, though Webb gets it back almost immediately. Ray throws two rights and lands one to the body as Webb leans away and has his helmet fall off. Webb and Ray then miss rights simultaneously before Ray misses two rights as Webb leans away again. Webb and Ray throw rights simultaneously again but this time Ray lands while Webb misses. Webb is knocked back but they follows up throwing simultaneously again with Ray, this time each connecting though Webb lands better. Webb then lands a right just before Ray misses a right while ducking his head but then they throw rights simultanesouly yet again, Ray landing and Webb missing. Ray misses a follow up right as Webb turns away for a moment but then throws two rights, landing one as Ray readjusts his grip. Ray then misses a right as Webb backs up and misses a right, then Ray lands a right before Webb misses a right. Ray misses a right, Webb misses a right, and then Ray misses a right as Webb ducks and has his sweater come over his head. Webb can't stay on his feet and drops to his knees as Ray alters his grip again to keep the jersey over Webb's head. Webb gets back up but Ray then lands a huge right that drops Webb to the ice. The linesmen come in and Ray lets go of Webb and celebrates on the way to the box. Webb tries to get up but he's clearly shaken up and is soon helped off the ice by a trainer and is bleeding from under the eye. Ray goes to the box but he broke his thumb and goes to the locker room as well. Ray had a similar fight with Webb the previous season, dropping Webb twice to earn a TKO win. Webb stood in there longer in this fight but he got knocked out and was clearly out of it afterwards so I call it KO.

Rob Ray and Steve Webb drop their gloves and square off in the neutral zone, keeping their helmets on. They come together and Webb lands three decent lefts before missing a fourth one. Ray lands two body punches, lands a right and lands another body punch. He misses an overhand right and Webb lands a good right. Ray lands two good rights and Webb lands a partial blow. Webb misses a right and Ray lands a very good right. Ray misses a right and Webb misses a right before landing a hard right. They both miss two blows each and Ray lands a hard right before Webb lands a body shot. Ray lands a right and Webb falls to his knees. His jersey goes over his head and when he blindly tries to get back up Ray lands a huge uppercut that drops Webb to the ice and the fight is over right there.

This was a tremending bout. I rate it as a KO victory for Ray. Webb got clocked at the end and stayed down for a while and when he got back up he was still "out on his feet". He looked completely stunned and lost and he had trouble getting his feet under him. Clear cut KO loss for him. This was a good bout with both guys throwing for the knockout without a whole lot of defense involved. Quite short, but spirtited tilt that ended up with a vicious knockout and left the two combattants a little bloodied.

Great scrap, Webb got some lefts in first, Ray came back with rights. After that they both threw some good rights. Webb went down to his knees and when he tried to get back up, Ray landed a massive right uppercut and Webb went down. Both were slightly cut and Webb looked woozy when he went to locker room.

Very good fight, Webb just swung like crazy as he usually does and so did Ray. Ray the whole fight was landing bombs with his right hand on Webb while they went toe to toe. Finally at the end after landing at least fifteen solid shots on Webb, Webb dropped to a knee. The linesmen came in and Webb got up but was clearly a bit out of it and went straight to the dressing room.

Ray was throwing absolute bombs, Webb throwing some decent shots of his own. But Webb was lucky not to have been lit up earlier by some of those rights. Jersey over the head, and there wasn't much he could do to avoid that last one that caught him just right.

There's probably some confusion involving this fight and the clip trading lists. A good deal of the people listing this fight probably mean to list the Webb/Ray fight from the previous season instead, as that clip was posted on hockeyfights.com a while ago and is much more common than this one.

That's not to say, of course, that some don't have the proper fight.

Check out the 1:37 mark of the clip and check out Ray's right thumb. It was bent most unnaturally. Ouch.Reply

Right after the fight Ray went to the penalty box but he called Terry Gregson over and Ray was allowed to go to the dressing room. It turns out Ray had broken his hand in the fight with Webb. ( no wonder considering the punches he landed on him) Emotion

Rob Ray suffered a broken thumb when he delivered that last uppercut to Steve Webb's face. The thumb was fractured in two places. Ray would have surgery on the thumb, where two pins would be inserted. Ray missed about a month of playing time. Emotion
