Well...I guess being involved in a CRAP fight with Andre Roy is the key to jump-starting a fighter's season. Both Cote and Thornton had awful performances against Roy this year, and yet have a great showing here. The two square off right at center ice and spin around before jumping in. Thornton got the right going early and hammered Cote with some, but Cote hung in there and got a few lefts of his own in. The two then went toe-to-toe with rights and lefts before Thornton landed a bomb that popped off Cote's helmet. Cote then turned away from Thornton's right and the two wrestled for a few seconds before resuming again. After the brief pause, Cote got his left free and threw a brief flurry of four unanswered lefts with two of them landing square and knocking Thornton's head back. Thornton then missed with an overhand right before switching and landing a left as Cote threw one more that missed. The two then tied up and the linesmen jumped in. A great scrap with the result being a Draw or an edge to Thornton. Thornton landed more, but Cote got a few big ones in late. Shawn threw his arms up in the air afterward and Riley seemed pumped also.

The fight of the year, IMO. They drop the gloves at center ice, and shadow for a little bit. As soon as they get together they start going toe-to-toe. They both landed about 8 and then Cote looked like he stopped throwing for about 3 seconds. This let Thornton land about 5 extra punches. They went toe-to-toe again! Each landing about 8-11 punches each. The refs came in.

While not a very long fight, my pick for the fight of the year. 30 seconds of pure glory for two very good fighters in this league. Amazing punches landed, every single punch was a good one.

Thornton gets the nod from me because from what I saw he landed more punches.

Shawn Thornton and Riley Cote squareoff with each other at centre ice. Thornton shows right while Cote shows left. They latch onto each other and start going toe-to-toe right away. Thornton throws four rights and lands two as Cote throws three lefts and connects with one. Cote stops throwing and Thornton lands two more rights. Then Cote starts throwing again and they go toe-to-toe. Cote chucks fifteen lefts and lands six on Thornton who tosses seventeen rights and lands ten. Cote loses his helmet towards the end and they cease throwing. Both guys get in tight and wrestle. Then Cote stands back and tosses four lefts, connecting with two while Thornton chucks three rights that all miss. They get in tight and wrestle some more, Thornton switches hands. Thornton misses a left and Cote misses a left afterwards. They continue to wrestle for a little longer and then the officials come in and break them apart. Great fight, they went toe-to-toe and really pounded on each other. I think Thornton got the best of this round, he landed more than Cote, who to his credit, hung in there till was over.

Shades of Vandy, Odgers, Stock, Doull, etc!
This was an awesome toe-2-toe battle, rock 'em sock 'em robots style. Good squareoff, and these two seemed eager to tear into each other. Cote goes lefty while Thornton goes righty. Both throw and land a tremendous number of punches. Maybe Thornton got in a couple more, but it wasn't enough to call a winner. Great stuff!

They find each other at center ice and decide to drop the gloves. They square off for a moment and grab ahold of each other. They immediately start going toe-to-toe: Cote went with the left; Thornton with the right, each connecting with a good amount. They stop throwing for a moment before going toe-to-toe once again with their respective left and right hands. They tie up in tight and go back and forth with some rights until the linesmen decide to intervene and break things up.

Draw in the fight of the year so far.

was at this game... talk about a crowd pleaser. cote and thornton pass each other and mutually drop the gloves. they float to center ice and shadowbox for several seconds, grab on, and UNLOAD. thornton with rights, cote with lefts, many of which connecting. cote pauses and allows thornton to connect on several unanswered rights, one of which knocking cotes helmet to the ice. they tie up, and begin unloading again, thornton with lefts. they slow down and grab on, each with smiles and an obvious respect for one another. the linesmen jump in, and thornton pumps up the crowd. a very spirited and talented fight, by two scrappers with power in both hands.

Both guys throwing rapid fire punches and landing. Shawn got the better of the first exchange and Riley seemed to come back torwards the end. I can see giving a narrow win to Thornton but both guys would probably tell you it was a draw. No defense in this one, this was old school. Reminded me of Peat vs. Stock.

This is one of the best fights in a long time and will get serious run for fight of the year. The only boring part was when they switched hands.

And of ALL the homer-ism on this site, I get plucked for "homer-ism" not because I'm a Flyers fan, but because I thought that this fight, like many people was basically a draw but I thought Riley landed the 2 best punches of the fight so I feel, at least for me, he won the fight. Unless you a fan of the wimpy Canadians or the Leafs it seems to be that you can't let any of your passion get in the way of what you feel and I think that's pretty dumb. Draw/edge Cote in this Barn burner.

Not long after the great Thornton-Cote tilt, Eager and Lucic decide to go. This happened just 15 seconds later and near the boards, so it surprised many people. Both started in close, but managed to separate and throw some good shots. Eager began with a right that landed and an uppercut that missed. Lucic then threw a right that connected followed by a few body shots, and Eager landed a decent right cross with one missing. Lucic came back with a good overhand right, but Eager managed to cut Lucic with one of his. After some spinning, Lucic locked out Eager very well as Ben tried to throw three wild rights that missed. After the last one, Eager flew foward, lost his balance and fell to the ice as Lucic landed another overhand right and threw one more while Eager was down. Draw or edge Eager. Lucic had a small cut below his eye and needed repairs, but Eager, once again, had questionable balance or else he would win many more fights at this level. Lucic again fought another intelligent fight, especially for a teenager. Meanwhile, on his way to the box, Eager was being his usual self and mouthing off to the Bruin bench by showing them were he cut Lucic. Once he reached the penalty box, he had a plethora of "colorful metaphors" to say to Shawn Thornton. The CSN broadcast gave far different angles of the two fights here. They actually focused in on Eager after this one ended so I could see what he was doing. The FSN broadcast did not pick it up.

Fifteen seconds after the great heavyweight bout between Riley Cote and Shawn Thornton, another pair of heavyweights, Ben Eager and Milan Lucic drop them and go. Both get a grip with the left and Eager lands a right before missing a right as Lucic also misses a right. Lucic misses a short right after and they grapple momentarily with Eager missing a right. Then Lucic throws two rights and lands one which get Eager to lower his head. Lucic then misses two rights and pushes Eager into the glass as Eager recovers and then connects on two rights. Lucic lands a right and Eager gets in tight. They wrestle and Eager misses a right with Lucic missing a right afterwards. Eager then throws two short rights and lands one as Lucic grapples and then stands back while landing a right. Eager misses a right and is thrown off balance and Lucic misses a right as Eager falls. The linesmen come in after Lucic misses a right at the downed Eager. Short but decent scrap. Pretty even in my book. Draw.

On the ensuing faceoff after Cote-Thornton, Eager and Lucic decide to go. They drop the gloves and grab ahold of each other as soon as the puck hits the ice. The linesmen try to grab the two and break things up but they shake them off. Lucic gets in two rights to start things off. They go up against the boards and Lucic throws another right. Eager gets his right hand free and throws a flurry of four of his own. Lucic comes back with a right and gets in another one while Eager is falling to the ice. Lucic skates back to the dressing room for repairs after a stream of blood is shown dripping from under his left eye.

Lucic is a good young player and fighter. Two stocky guys go at it here along the boards. Both Lucic and Eager land some rights. Eager more early and Lucic in the middle. The end of the fight was a bunch of grappling and on the take down alone, I will give the edge to Lucic.

Personally I don't see Bergeron turning at the last second, his back was already turned as he pursued the puck and Jones just hit him from behind and followed through with his arms. Obviously he most likely didn't want to smash his face into the dasher but I don't think he's completely innocent either, he had to see he was hitting him from behind and just wasn't expecting that level of aftermath. Bergeron is sprawled out on the ice like he's dead. Chuck Kobasew tries to go after him but the refs won't allow it. Emotion

The actual hit wasn't the problem here, it's the way Bergeron hit the boards. Head first. Then he just collapsed without moving. He left on a stretcher hardly moving any body parts. Clearly unintentional on Jones' part and i expect a 5-10 game suspension. They were talking about possibility of his career being over. Really an unfortunate event right here. Emotion

It was clear that Jones had no intentions on hurting Bergeron he didn't even know he was hurt, didn't expect Bergeron to get hurt, IMO he shouldnt even get suspended, it's hockey that kind of stuff happens. They would have to take hitting out all together to stop these kind of things. I don't blame Jones for what he did. Emotion

Give me a break. Randy Jones was playing the body like any other NHL defenseman would, Bergeron spun at the last second and went face first into the dasher. He had no intent to injure, did not take a run, and has no history of any cheapness. There should be no suspension and I'm sure JOnes would be the first to tell you he didn't mean to and that he hopes Bergeron is okay. THERE IS NO WAY HE MEANT TO DO THAT, plain and simple. He is not in the same category as Downie or Boulerice. Emotion

Wasn't that bad. The way they have the pic on TSN, you would think he killed the guy. Didn't even look that bad of a hit. I have seen way worse. Definitely does not deserve a suspension. Emotion

Bergeron went into the corner and Jones hit him face first into the boards. Emotion

Jones definitely got him from behind, but it was more the Bruin's player's fault. He turned at the last second as they both arrived at the puck at the same time. Jones is not a dirty player...he is not even remotely physical most of the time. I feel bad for the Boston player, but I know the play wasn't intentional on Randy Jones' end.Reply

Luckily for Bergeron it's just a concussion and a broken nose.Reply

Kobasew attempts to fight Jones for his hit from behind on Patrice Bergeron. Their gloves are dropped and they start grappling but a linesmen prevents anything further from happening, which I think is bullshit. Let Kobasew stand up for his teammate. Fun
