After Jeremy Reich makes contact with Cristobal Huet during the third period, a scrum breaks out and everybody gathers together. Words are exchanged as it appears the two teams remember that they are indeed the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens. As things begin to die down, Kostopoulos and Alberts meet up to have a go. Both of these guys have horrendous fighting results and have lost to some very weak opponents in the past, so a bad fight was to be expected here. Alberts did not use his size advantage very well as he seemed uninterested despite having a beatable combatant. He started off by knocking the helmet of TK to the ground with an overhand right, but did not follow up with anything. Kostopoulos connects with a weak body punch as Alberts attempts to get his right free. Kostopoulos then misses two rights badly as one hits the back of the jersey and the other comes up way short. Alberts returns fire with a right that misses and then is just content to drag TK around for a few seconds before holding him to the ice and waiting for the linesmen.

An awful fight with no winner or good punches thrown, let alone landed. Despite the dullness of this individual scrap, it did lead to more interesting things happening later on in the period.

It appears that a scrum is dying down and nothing will happen but then Alberts and Kostopoulos, neither known for a great winning percentage, randomly go at it. Alberts takes TK's helmet off and throws a right to the back of the head. TK throws a body punch. Alberts misses an uppercut as Kostopoulos misses a right, then another which was locked out. Alberts attempts a poorly aimed half-punch, then wrestles Kostopoulos to the ice and leans on him to prevent him from getting up.

Jeremy Reich trips Carey Price and that starts a melee which halts play. Reich and Francis Bouillon try to fight but the linesmen break them up. The melee is settled down but then Andrew Alberts starts fighting with Tom Kostopoulos. Alberts misses a right, removes Kostopoulos' helmet, and lands a right. Kostopoulos misses two rights before Alberts misses a right, then Kostopoulos misses two more rights. Alberts misses a right while Kostopoulos gets turned around and he tries to get in close with the bigger Alberts. Kostopoulos loses his balance though and Alberts gets on top of Kostopoulos to finish the fight up. Draw in a boring scrap and a short one. This was the first tilt of what would be a pretty rough last period between these two rival teams.

Mark Stuart decisive win Fun
4
Stuart and Kostitsyn have a shoving match that escalates into a fight as Stuart drops his gloves. Apparently Kostitsyn has no idea he's in a fight since he just keeps his gloves on and tries to hold on. Stuart rips his helmet off and pounds the hapless Euro to the ice with right hands. I didn't see Kostitsyn drop even one glove. He had no problem throwing some stick work at Stuart but once it came time to fight he wanted no part of it, kind of a pussy move if you ask me.

Mark Stuart instigates a fight with Andrei Kostitsyn who doesn't want to go at all and doesn't even drop his gloves. Stuart gets a grip of Kostitsyn who puts his head down and has his helmet and visor ripped off by Stuart. Stuart then stands back and throws a flurry of seven rights, landing only three as Kostitsyn loses his grip of Stuart and then falls to the ice covering up. The linesmen get in and break it up there. All Stuart over the non-fighter Kostitsyn who didn't drop his gloves.

According to our rules, you must be 100% sure that a player never intended to fight back. Note "100%" and "never". I'm not 100% sure that he never intended to fight back, and neither were several reviewers here, even though he didn't drop the gloves.Reply

Zdeno Chara win by TKO Fun
5
With tempers flaring and the Canadiens ahead, Zdeno Chara goes after Alexei Kovalev and hits him up high along the wall. Kovalev's helmet pops loose and a penalty is called against Chara. After the whistle, Guillaume Latendresse has words with Glen Metropolit and Chara skates over. Latendresse foolishly decides to shove Big Z and this really angers him. Both drop the gloves and Chara starts quickly with a right that misses as Latendresse just puts his head down and realizes that he is in bad shape. Chara then connects with an uppercut followed by another HUGE right uppercut that drops Latendresse like a rock to the ice. The last punch had so much force behind it that even the official next to Chara fell with Latendresse to the ice. In other words, it is not a good idea to anger Chara.

Zdeno has not officially lost a fight since January 24, 2002 when he came up short against Andrei Nazarov of all people. Latendresse is not a player that backs up his enormous hits or his milling around during scrums very often, so it is a surprise that he even went with Chara here when he had nothing to do with the play. An easy TKO victory for Big Z and still a disappointed group of fans that want to see him lose badly, but will have to wait a little longer.

Latendress pissed off Chara who threw off his gloves and landed some solid uppercuts dropping Latendress to the ice. Latendress may have had intent to fight back. He tried to avoid Chara's punch but couldn't as Chara with his long reach landed flush with all his punches and dropped Latendress.

Chara with a high hit on a Canadiens player, it looks like he's getting a penalty. He skates towards another Montreal player behind the net so Latendresse approaches him and gets his arms out to either shove him or grab onto him. Apparently Chara takes this as a challenge to fight because he tosses his gloves aside and starts firing right uppercuts as a linesman attempts to intervene. The third punch drops Latendresse to the ice and I'm not even sure if he had dropped both gloves by the end of it.

Zdeno Chara goes for a head hit on Alexei Kovalev and then initiates a fight with Guillaume Latendresse just after a whistle and Chara gets his gloves off quickly. Latendresse only drops his right glove while grabbing at Chara who starts throwing. Even though Latendresse ducks away, the much greater size of Chara allows him two connect on two of his three rights and the last sends Latendresse to his knees. The third fight of the third period in this rough game. Latendresse didn't want to fight but Chara just started throwing them and it was over fast as he TKO'd Latendresse.

Chara checked Kovalev up high along the boards. Latendresse didn't like the hit and went after Zdeno. He had his gloves on at first and it looked like he was going to push and shove. Chara upped the ante and dropped the mitts. Guillaume was in a fight. Zdeno landed an average blow, missed a punch, and felled Latendresse with a good right uppercut.

This was a TKO for Chara. He dropped Latendresse to close the show.

This is exactly why people don't like Chara. During a scrum Latendresse is having words with Glen Metropolit, both looked like they were ready to scrap. Big tough Chara comes in and gets in a shoving match with Latendresse as Metropolit just stands there with an "uhhh ok then" look on his face. Chara drops his gloves and landed 2-3 big punches sending Latendresse down. Latendresse dropped his gloves too but didn't throw. Metropolit and Latendresse have both fought before and Im 99% sure they would have gone there.

Tko Chara but this was a pointless fight that Chara shouldn't have been in.

Chara plays 25-30 minutes tonight and is a stud defenseman. Why the fuck would he fight Laraque, Boogaard or McGrattan and take a 5 minute major, it's a terrible trade off. Some people are such fucking tools when it comes to Chara and have no idea what they're talking about. He's a great d-man and is tough as nails.Reply

I just hate it when you guys bring up the importance of Chara being on the ice instead of being off the ice for 5 minutes. It's only 5 minutes out of a 60 minute game. So what does he miss? Maybe 2 minutes of ice time? And he's not that good of a player that he shouldn't be fighting anymore. If you guys don't want him fighting, isn't there some Lady Byng hockey fight site you can join?

And about Chara's fight card, I realize he mostly heavyweights when he first broke in with the Islanders, and with the Senators as well, but it seems like he's too eager to fight Vincent Lecavalier any chance he can get, or lesser fighters like Tim Gleason and Bryan Allen. I know those 2 guys can fight, but they are hardly in Chara's league. And when Chara has fought heavyweights the past few years, he seemed to bail quickly with Ivanans and then throws a cheap punch when the linesmen are in there. And in the Cairns fight, he's all too eager to throw a bunch of punches while there is a bunch of interference from players and refs, and he feels he can get the advantage, but when everyone clears out, his legs go out from underneath him like they are cooked spaghetti and Cairns never has a chance to even up the fight. But yet the idiots on this site give Chara the win in both fights when it's clear he bailed in both fights and used some questionable tactics, as Hcanine had mentioned in an above post.

But I will give Chara credit for the Koci fight, as he busted him open good and got the win over a very large man and pretty good heavyweight fighter. But that's one good fight in the past 3 years. He's got to do more than that in the fighting department to impress me. I don't care how good of a hockey player he is, he should be fighting more than he is and against a lot better competition than he has in the past few seasons.

The rules say that one has to be 100% sure that Latendresse never intended to fight. I can't make the call because I'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure because Latendresse seemed to have started the altercation, or at least he looked as aggressive as Chara at that point.

With the Canadiens way ahead and time winding down, Stuart and Kostopoulos decide to join the increasingly rare club of players who are involved in a scrap twice in one period. I am certain nobody here would have guessed these two would combine for four majors in less than ten minutes. Kostopoulos is always willing to go again, but actually produces and even worse product here than he did earlier in the period. When there is motivation to get back at a player for taking on a non-fighter (such as Stuart-Kostitsyn), one would imagine that the instigator would throw more than just ONE punch. Not in the case of TK. He gives Stuart a shove in the Bruins zone and they go at it with Kostopoulos throwing a bad right that misses before Stuart wrestles around for position. It appears that Stuart does not wish to fight here as he was not even facing TK when he came over to challenge him, so Mark just throws him to the ice and misses a punch before the linesmen came in.

This may have been two minutes apiece for roughing back in the day, but not anymore. Draw as nothing really happened. I must say it is good to see a guy with the willingness of Kostopoulos, but I really hope he works on his technique before he decides to fight anymore, especially if he wants to go with bigger guys who can fight. If not for entertainment's sake, than for his own good.

Kostopoulos starts a fight with Stuart because of the incident with Kostitsyn earlier. They drop the gloves and swing around, Kostopoulos misses a right hand and then slides to the ice, where Stuart throws a right at him. It may or may not have landed but the fight is over in any event. Good to see Kostopoulos try to get revenge but since he's a terrible fighter he couldn't really prove any point. This game really demonstrated that Montreal needs a little more toughness, Stuart and Chara beat down a pair of rather unwilling Canadiens and only Tom Kostopoulos is there to do something about it and he, on any given night, can do very little.

The Montreal Candiens are winning handily over the rival Boston Bruins and what has been a rough third period sees one last fight as Canadiens' tough guy, Tom Kostopoulos goes after defensive defenseman, Stuart of the Bruins after a whistle because Stuart fought Andrei Kostitsyn earlier when Kostitsyn didn't want to fight. Kostopoulos and Stuart get in close and wrestle around for a little bit. Kostopoulos misses a right but loses his balance shortly thereafter. Kostopoulos falls back to the ice and Stuart misses a right before the linesmen get in to break it up. Not much here at all, Kostopoulos fell before it got going. Draw, not a punch landed.
