Oneill.the.Giant 2891 fight reviews Aug 13, 2009 16:29 ET | Mike Sgroi clear win Fight called Unfair by Oneill.the.Giant on Jul 5, 2009 Reason: Too much interference by the refs | Fun 6 |
Mike Salekin lines up beside Mike Sgroi at a face off near the end of the game, and after the puck is dropped Salekin gives Sgroi a slash with his stick and the two of them drop their gloves. Both guys throw a punch each as they come together and both miss with another punch each before they fall to the ice with Sgroi landing on top.
They grapple about on the ice for a second and Sgroi lands a couple of right hands on Salekin as the lino's come in to separate them. As both players get back up to their skates it's clear that Sgroi wants to continue the fight and he struggles to free himself from one of the lino's clutches.
Sgroi then forces both lino's and Salekin towards the boards and he is able to free his right arm and throws five shots at Salekin. None look to land clear but Sgroi then switches to his left arm and lands a couple of sneaky punches as Salekin was being held by one of the lino's. The other lino is trying hard to control Sgroi but the Johnstown Chiefs enforcer is still managing to throw punches at Salekin before they were finally separated.
The fight itself before the lino's came in was even as neither guy landed a punch. But Sgroi wanted to fight on and even though the lino's came between them he managed to land some good punches on Salekin before they were separated. Sgroi clearly won the fight but it was unfair as the lino's were in between them.
Clear win Sgroi. |

They were at it earlier, too. 3 - JHN Sgroi 3:26 - Roughing - minor (51.2), 2 min 3 - REA Salekin 3:26 - Roughing - minor (51.2), 2 min
They dropped the puck in the Reading zone and #22 for Johnstown won it. A second passed and Salekin & Sgroi got together for at least the second time during the course of the game. They stood next to each other before the faceoff and just when it dropped Salekin tapped Sgroi on the leg to say let's go. Sgroi immediately accepted and they got together with both swinging rights until Salekin went down. I'm watching a poor quality video and the action is pretty swift. It looks to me like Salekin looses his balance and takes Sgroi with him falling backwards, landing with his calf right on a stick.
Linesmen Mike McDevitt and Luke Murray came in to break it up right at the blueline. The pair kept on wrestling, and as all four got back up on their feet Sgroi kept on throwing rights towards Salekin through the linesmen. He also tried for the ribs at one point and saw an opening for some lefts and let some go as well. The Linesmen really had their hands full with Sgroi still being aggressive and punching at Salekin. Luke Murray towered over Sgroi and was really hanging like a monkey on his back but Sgroi couldn't have been bothered less. He didn't seem to notice the linesman at all, throwing punches all the same without stopping. Salekin was buried under the other linesman McDevitt and was smart to cover up and wait. At this point Referee Nick Suhy came over to handle the situation and the wrestling opened up a little bit creating a space in which Salekin could come back with a right of his own.
They finally separated but Salekin held on to Sgroi's jersey a bit longer until they were escorted away by a linesman each. Sgroi accompanied by some words from Salekin. I counted about sixteen punches from Sgroi, fourteen of which came through the linesmen (not very clever). Salekin threw two or three with only one while tangled up with the zebras. I call it a draw until I can get a better look at the reason why Salekin fell down, but it looked like balance. 29 PIMs Sgroi. 19 PIMs Salekin. |

| Sgroi suspended for 10
The same traits that make Mike Sgroi so popular among Johnstown Chiefs fans often draw attention from the ECHL office too.
Sgroi is a high-energy player with a colorful background and an edge. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound mixed martial arts expert won't back down from a fight. He'll defend his teammates.
When Sgroi was jumped from behind by Reading's Mike Salekin on Saturday night at the Sovereign Center, Sgroi responded as those who have followed the Chiefs would have expected him to respond.
The big guy whipped Salekin, who had badgered Sgroi and other Chiefs during the teams' past three meetings.
As the fight was being broken up by linesmen at 12:03 of the final period, both Sgroi and Salekin continued throwing punches. Both players were cited for continuation of the fight.
Sgroi also received game misconducts for being the aggressor and physically abusing an official.
On Monday, the ECHL suspended Sgroi for 10 games and fined him an undisclosed amount under Rule 29 supplemental discipline.
He got jumped from behind for the second time by a defenseman from Reading, Salekin, No. 17, Chiefs coach Ian Herbers said. Mike wanted to make sure it wasn't going to happen again and send him a statement. I don't know if I can say anything much more.
Both guys got penalties for continuing to fight. I can't say much.
Sgroi has seven goals, 19 points and 145 penalty minutes in 23 games. Since his Jan. 12 addition to the lineup, the Chiefs are 13-7-1-2.
We'll miss his size and presence up front, but it's a team game, Herbers said. The other guys will have to step up and fill the roles. We have a couple extra bodies right now. We're confident with anybody that steps in.
With 1,452 career penalty minutes in the ECHL, AHL and UHL since 2000-01, Sgroi's reputation often puts him under scrutiny.
I think history does play a part in every decision that they (ECHL) make, Herbers said. They look at past history. But that's part of the reason we brought Mike in here. It was for his energy and his history. It's a give-and-take thing.
Sgroi sat out Sunday's 6-2 win at Elmira. He has nine games remaining on the suspension.
The Chiefs have 15 more regular-season games.
Sgroi would be eligible to return on March 28 at Wheeling.
