Rob Ray win by TKO Fun
7
This was Rob Ray's last fight as a member of the Buffalo Sabres, and he certainly goes out with a bang!

The battle starts when Buffalo forward Adam Mair gets decked by a huge check along the boards that was delivered by Toronto blueliner Bryan McCabe. Mair gets up and is angry, wanting to get at McCabe. All of the Sabre and Leaf skaters pour into the middle of the fray, and suddenly the officials have their hands full.

Ray is on the outskirts of the scrum and the only Leaf near him is Alexei Ponikarovsky. They shove at each other. The shoving quickly turns into gloved punches, as both Ray and Ponikarovsky take a few little pops at each other. The gloves to the face get more serious.

Ray sheds his left glove and grabs Ponikarovsky's sweater. He keeps the right gauntlet on and uses it to punch away at Poni, no doubt not wanting to hurt his hand on Alexei's visor and helmet. Ponikarovsky staggers a bit as he gets hit, as he has no grip on Ray. The big European loses his gloves, latches onto Ray and tries to right himself.

Ray throws several more right hands with the glove on. When Ponikarovsky fires back bare-fisted with a couple shots of his own, Ray is done playing around and tosses aside his right glove. They are now in a fight for real.

Ponikarovsky and Razor go back and forth, throwing right hands at each other. Poni does surprisingly well, landing one right and getting in a couple jersey jabs with the left. His other rights miss cleanly. Ray, for his part, lands about half of the five or six right hands he tossed. His final punch was a solid one, cranking Alexei in the jaw.

The shot to the jaw made Ponikarovsky's legs buckle. He falls forward to his knees and stays there on the ice. Ray has a hold of him, but makes no attempt to throw any more punches, recognizing that Poni was finished. The linesmen then stepped in, sending Ray to the sin bin.

Ray wins this via a TKO, but give Ponikarovsky some credit for taking on a legit heavyweight and refusing to back down.

Razor left the Sabres on a high note, as far as fighting goes.

McCabe laid out Mair with a hit on an offsides call (which would come into play later on). This makes the Sabres upset, and a big scrum develops near the boards. As Ray joins the fun, his glove hits Alexei Ponikarovsky in the face. Ponikarovsky hits Ray back, and they exchange several gloved punches to the face. Ponikarovsky, to his credit, never backs down, but he's in too deep now. Ray drops one glove and grabs his jersey, but keeps the glove on his right hand on. Ray throws a couple more gloved rights as Ponikarovsky seems a bit lost and tries to grab him a few times and misses. But he doesn't bail out, and drops the gloves and grabs Ray. Ray throws a few more gloved rights, then calmly flips it off.

Ponikarovsky takes this opportunity to throw a punch with his right hand, but it misses. Ray lands a heavy right in response, but Ponikarovsky stays up. Ponikarovsky tries a jab with the left hand that's grabbing the jersey, proving he's learned something by watching Belak. Ponikarovsky throws another right, but it misses. Ray tries to respond, but Ponikarovsky ducks it. Ponikarovsky then lands a harmless looking right. Ray lands a right. Ponikarovsky throws again, but it falls well short. He lands a jersey jab, and Ray grazes him with a right. Ponikarovsky lands a right, and Ray's done toying around now, as he lands a big right that buckles his knees and puts him down. Ponikarovsky has no intentions of getting back up, and Ray lets up.

Looks like Ray took it easy on him for the most part, but Ponikarovsky hung in there pretty well and at least tried to fight back.

Mismatch of all mismatches as Ponikarovsky is a tall lanky Euro skilled player taking on Ray a short but well-built experienced heavyweight enforcer.

It starts in a scrum Ray and Ponikarovsky exchange glove shots back and forth. Ray then drops his gloves grabs Ponikarovsky who still has his gloves on and hits him with two solid shots before Ponikarovsky got his gloves off. Once Ponikarovsky got his gloves off he took a right but tied up Ray. Ponikarovsky then landed a right. Ray missed one in response and took a right from Ponikarovsky. Both guys then missed a right haymaker. They then backed up and used the jabs Ponikarovsky clearly learning from watching Belak fight. Ray then missed another and took a counter shot from Ponikarovsky. Ray though countered Ponikarovsky's right with one of his own landing solidly. Ponikarovsky then looked to slip to a knee and the linesmen came in.

Ponikarovsky did well with the heavy he still lost the fight but it looked pretty close. Still clear win to Ray as his last punch might even have dropped Ponikarovsky.

After the whistle goes for an offside call McCabe hits Mair. Mair goes back at him and everyone piles in. Ray smacks Ponikorovsky in the face and he goes back at Ray. After a few more smacks Ray drops his gloves and grabs Ponikorovsky. poni's in trouble now but give him credit he's a euro but he drops his gloves to take on Ray. Ray throws a couple rights which connect and Poni throws 1 that misses. Ray throws a couple more in and Poni throws in a couple of jersey jabs. But Ray throws 1 of his huge rights which hits him under the visor and drops him. Kudos to Ponikorvsky for not backing down against Ray.

This was a TKO not a clear win for Ray because Ponikarovsky went down from the last punch thrown by Ray.

Bryan McCabe puts a big hit on Adam Mair but it comes late as the whistle goes. A scrum is triggered because of it and just outside the scrum, Alexei Ponikarovsky trades gloved punches with Rob Ray. Ray finally has enough and drops his gloves, grabbing onto Ponikarovsky who tries to grab on but can't get any kind of grip with his gloves on. Ray lands two rights to the face and then Ponikarovsky's gloves come off. Ponikarovsky then gets a hold on Ray as he throws two rights and lands one. They pause and Ray shakes his elbow pad off. Ponikarovsky misses a right and then Ray connects on a right. Ponikarovsky then jersey jabs a bit and misses a right before Ray lands another right. Ponikarovsky then lands a right and Ray misses a right with Ponikarovsky missing a right afterwards. They pause and Ponikarovsky jersey jabs a little more. Ray misses a right and then Ponikarovsky lands a right but then Ray lands a right which sends Ponikarovsky to his knees and ends the fight. Pretty entertaining fight. Ponikarovsky did pretty well with the long time tough guy in Ray but in the end the far more experienced Ray caught Ponikarovsky with a big right which TKO'd him.

After the whistle for an offside call, Bryan McCabe throws a huge hit on Adam Mair and that causes a scrum. Away from the scrum, Ponikarovsky and Ray are throwing gloved punches at each other. After a while they have had enough and they drop the gloves. Ray connects with two rights with his glove still on before he gets rid of it. Ponikarovsky misses with a right and Ray connects with a right. They each connect with a right before Ponikarovsky just misses with another right. They each miss a right and go in circles before Ray misses a right, Ponikarovsky connects with a right and then Ray connects with a right that sends Ponikarovsky to the ice and the linesman seperate them.

This was a huge mismatch as Ray is a heavyweight enforcer where as this was Ponikarovsky's first NHL fight. Ponikarovsky did all right before being dropped by that right hand from Ray. TKO win to Ray but huge props to Ponikarovsky for taking on Ray.

Ray started this one and landed a few gloved blows. Ponikarovsky was a willing combatant. Rob landed a pretty good right and missed a couple of shots. Alexei missed a right hand. Ray landed three solid blows and missed a shot. Ponikarovsky landed a decent blow and missed two rights. He missed two lefts and landed a decent blow. Ray landed a good right that ended the fight.

This was a TKO for Ray. It was his last fight as a member of the Sabres. He went out in memorable fashion.

MCcabe takes a late hit on Mair which sets off a decent scrum...These 2 break away...going in looked to be a major mismatch but poni stould his ground for the most part...Ray starts it off landing 3 shots to poni's 1 but he also missed a short shot...then BAM!!! Ray buckled Poni's knees with a bomb and Poni went and stayed down...but not really that bad for a euro non-fighter

WOW! I did not know this fight even exsisted. Good for Ponikarovski. I don't think I will ever give that Euro any crap because he did something most Euro's wet their Pajamas over.

But I call it like I see it, and Ray showed why he was a top 5 heavy in the NHL for years and why Ponikarovski should just stick to scoring goals. Thank god Alexei had that visor on or things could have gotten REALLY bad. TKO destruction Ray.

There's a scrum along the boards and Ponikarovsky and Ray decide to fight, pretty average exchange of right hands by both, some landing and some missing, eventually in the end Ray gets a big right in and that drops Ponikarovsky.

Bryan McCabe narrow win Fun

Adam Mair heads to Bryan McCabe wanting a fight and McCabe obliges. They gloves come off and the two grab hold of each other right away. Mair misses four lefts as McCabe leans away and they spin. McCabe gets set and misses a right before landing a right while Mair misses a left. Mair then misses a left while McCabe lands a right and then Mair lands a left which buckles McCabe as McCabe lands a right. McCabe goes to a knee and Mair throws two lefts, landing one before McCabe gets back up. Mair loses his grip of McCabe and McCabe throws three rights, landing one. Mair regains a grip on McCabe while knocking his helmet off and then misses a left as McCabe misses a right. Mair leans away and misses a left while McCabe misses a right, then McCabe lands a right as Mair misses a left. Mair is stung and ducks while McCabe lands a follow up right. McCabe then misses a right while Mair lands a left and ends up getting McCabe jerseyed and bent over. Mair lands a left and then pushes McCabe off balance while McCabe misses a right and falls over. A wild middleweight fight with punches flying all over. Mair had his moments but didn't land as many or as well for the most part as McCabe did. McCabe was swinging away and caught Mair with a number of them, a few getting him in the head and one of them definitely stunning Mair momentarily. Mair however got in one that almost put McCabe down and then got in another one that put McCabe off balance while he was jerseyed and allowed Mair to push McCabe to the ice and end the fight. However Mair was also a bit cut up after the fight. With more punches landed and some of them landing pretty well, as well as some damage done to Mair, I go with an edge to McCabe.

Bryan McCabe narrow win Fun
7
Earlier in the period Toronto defenseman Bryan McCabe leveled Adam Mair with a hip check at the blueline on an offside call. This triggered a scrum which led to a fight between Rob Ray and Alexei Ponikarovsky. However Mair was unable to get at McCabe at that particular time so he tracks him down not even two and a half minutes later. McCabe accepts Mair's challenge and away they go.

Mair goes on the offensive early as he connects with three lefts. McCabe answers back with a right uppercut, followed by two more blows. Mair misses with a left and he gets tagged by a huge right hand from McCabe! The blow snaps Mair's head back and appears to stun him. Incredibly Mair stays on his feet and continues to swing away.

Mair misses with two more lefts and ducks a right from McCabe. McCabe does connect on his next two punches. McCabe loses his helmet and Mair in turn lands two left hands. McCabe then lands a bomb and this time Mair is really stung. I believe this punch is the one that resulted in Mair being cut open but incredibly he stays on his feet yet again! Mair turns his head away as McCabe lands another right. Mair answers with a left and the jersey comes up over McCabe's head. Mair gets in one more left and he knocks McCabe off balance. McCabe misses with a right as they both fall to the ice.

Entertaining affair here as this fight was a wild swinging tilt and both men were throwing with bad intent. The punch count was close to being even but McCabe landed the hardest blows of the scrap and he cut Mair open so that is enough for him to get the decision here. It's always good to see some animosity between players and to witness a fight break out because one player is trying to enact payback on the other. Very good middleweight bout.

Clearly Mair wanted a go with McCabe for the smash Mair took along the boards the play before.

They go way behind the play. As the camera comes in, Mair has control the first 5 seconds, scoring with a few punches. But then the tides turn. McCabe gets free and lands some hard, punishing blows to Mair face. At least 3 hard punches landed flush. Mair didn't buckle though as he was clearly all juiced up. They spin around with both guys landing a few more solid shots before they fall onto the ice. Great fight. Very entertaining for a short fight. Win McCabe, answering the bell and landing HARD shots.

This was a very exciting fight. Mair and McCabe had an intense battle. Adam landed an average blow and a partial connect. He missed several shots and landed a good left. Bryan landed an average punch, two solid blows, and a good right. Mair missed several punches, landed a decent blow, and landed a solid left. McCabe missed a punch and landed a solid blow. He landed an average shot and a good punch. He missed a few blows. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for McCabe. Both men landed with authority. Bryan landed more punches and with better impact overall. It was closer to a clear win than a draw.

McCabe caught Mair with a devastating right cross in this fight which badly bloodied him. I don't know how Mair took it and recovered as quickly as he did. He even won the takedown at the end. There's no doubt who won the fight, but it didn't look a decisive win to me.

Mair went straight to the dressing room and so did McCabe, probably because he hurt his hand landing that big right.

This came about because of the late hit. A bunch of wild swinging, McCabe easily lands more and better punches with his right hand, including a vicious punch that probably opened the cut above Mair's eye. Mair did land a few with his left and got the takedown, but McCabe clearly got the better of the tilt.

Two power forwards Chris Gratton and Shayne Corson drop the gloves for the 3rd fight in this violent game. The fight starts out toe-to-toe as Gratton and Corson both trade rights. They start grappling as Corson loses an elbow pad. Gratton lands a right before throwing 2 to the side of Corson's head. With Corson not throwing anything the linesmen attempt to move in. Corson waves them off and they continue.

Gratton lands a right. Corson pops in 3 quick lefts. The 2 have moved all the way over to the boards as the fight started in the slot area. Gratton lands a right and Corson responds with a left. They are beginning to tire which leads to grappling. Corson lands a left. Gratton misses with a right. Corson lands a right just as the linesmen move in.

The fight starts out fast, with some toe to toe action with the straight rights from both. They each land a few good punches, but don't seem any worse for wear. Gratton throws some short shots that don't really connect. The linesmen see that Corson isn't fighting back and think about coming in to stop it, but Corson calls them off. Another quick exchange with some decent stuff landing, then they wrestle and throw with very little steam on them before the linesmen step in.

Draw as they both throw a great number of impeded punches at each other. Even though they had a grip on each other's thowing arms, many fully land while some were just marginal-glances off the shnoz. Good fight...I didn't think gratton had it in him to last so long in a fight, but he proved otherwise.

Wade Belak clear win Fun
7
Eric Boulton and Wade Belak have a rematch from their preseason fight in September. In that fight, Belak won it in clearcut fashion and even knocked out one of Boulton's teeth during the fight! This game between the two rivals the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs has already been a rough one with three fights in the 1st period. Right after Chris Gratton and Shayne Corson finished their fight and were sent to the box, Boulton and Belak come out out on the ice. The puck is dropped and Boulton goes directly to Belak who is out at the blueline and they drop the gloves.

Boulton gets his elbow pad off as they grab each other and spin around. Belak connects with three jersey jabs with his left hand. Belak lands two uppercuts from underneath followed by a punch to the side of Boulton's head. Boulton connects with two rights of his own and then stumbles to his knees briefly. Belak works in two more right hands and the two men get in close and do some wrestling. Belak's shoulder pad is askew and has come loose over his shoulder.

Belak switches to the left and scores with a punch and then goes back to his right and connects again. Boulton lands a right. Belak responds with two more blows. Boulton misses with a right and takes another punch from Belak. Belak scores again with the right. Boulton tries to pull his right arm out of his jersey. He manages to do this and Boulton comes up short with a right. Belak lands a right and then pulls Boulton's jersey over his head. Belak ends up pulling the jersey right off and the linesmen get between them when they see this happen.

Very good fight that went for awhile and both men got in some good punches. However Belak had the reach and he outlanded Boulton by a wide margin to earn the clear win here. This fight was similar to the one they had in the preseason. Boulton was unable to overcome Belak's reach advantage and as a result he ended up on the receiving end of several punches (although in this fight he didn't lose a tooth).

Wade Belak clear win Fun

Eric Boulton takes a run at Wade Belak right off the draw so the two drop the gloves and both grab on with the left. It is the fourth fight in three minutes of this first period between the Northeast Division rivals, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Belak jersey jabs while Boulton shakes his elbow pad off and they spin around. Belak misses three rights and Boulton misses a right, then Belak misses a right before landing a right as Boulton misses a right. Belak misses a right and turns his head away from Boulton as he lands a right. Boutlon tries to duck inside and then misses a right though he goes off balance after. Belak throws three rights and connects on two while Boulton regains his footing. Boulton misses a right before Belak throws two rights and lands one. Boulton misses a right and then gets in close with Belak. They pause and then Belak misses three rights as they gain space from each other. Boulton misses a right as Belak leans away and then he misses a right. Boulton misses a right before Belak misses a right, then Boulton attempts to get more free and misses a right. Belak throws two rights and connects on one before Boulton misses a right. Belak then moves in close while Boulton gets his hand out of his jersey and misses a right. Belak misses two rights and gets the jersey over Boulton's head, then Boulton misses a right. Boulton falls down and loses his jersey completely, causing Belak to lose his hold of Boulton. Boulton gets up and wants to keep fighting but the referees get there and keep the two enforcers apart. A good, long, battle between Belak and Boulton. They had space from each other for almost the entire fight and with the reach advantage, Belak was able to land more often than Boulton.

Boulton hung in there the best he could, but he was outclassed in this one. Belak pounded out the win in a systematic manner. Wade missed two punches and landed a decent blow. He missed a punch and landed a decent jersey jab. He missed two punches and landed a partial connect. He landed two solid rights. Eric missed a punch and landed an average right.

Belak landed a body blow and missed several punches. He landed an average blow. Boulton landed an average shot and missed two rights. Wade landed a body shot and missed two blows. He landed a partial connect and a solid shot. He missed a punch and landed a solid blow. Eric missed a few punches and landed a solid connect. Belak missed a blow, landed a pretty good shot, and landed a solid connect. Boulton missed a punch. Wade landed a solid blow. The refs stopped the contest.

I rate this as a clear win for Belak. He landed many more punches and controlled the contest from start to finish.

Another marathon and again, it would be a great fight if they landed better. Each man got one good punch in. Boulton failed to land anything else while Belak landed a lot but nothing worth talking about. But it looked entertaining all the way, with Boulton losing his jersey at the end and Belak also partly undressed.

Belak controls early, with several left jabs and a nice right uppercut. Boulton tries to come back but is outsized and Belak keeps him at bay for the most part. Belak sneaks in a good left hand, and they trade blows. Belak hits another strong right, and Boulton pulls his arm through his jersey. Belak seems to notice and pulls Boulton's jersey off and ends the fight.

Belak controlled the fight and landed more. I don't think Boulton could hit water jumping off a boat with those punches he tried to toss.

Boulton could not figure out the huge reach advantage Belak has on him in this fight. Boulton looked like crap in this fight. He looked very disinterested and wanted to bail as soon as they grabbed a hold of each other. But on the other hand, this was another defensive clinic put on by Belak. He just protected himself, didn't get hit, and by the time the fight was over and all was said and done, Boulton got hit about 12 times, with a few of them being pretty hard shots, while Boulton might have landed one.

Win Belak. Out-classed Boulton.

Boulton bumped Berg and then tried to goad Belak into taking a penalty. He didn't drop his gloves when Belak did, covering up and taking a couple of punches. All to no avail because the refs gave them both 2 minutes anyway. Fun

Svelha mishandled the puck and Brown scored an empty-netter, so Svelha cross-checked him in the back and a scrum developed. There were some punches thrown and it looked like McCabe took this opportunity to rough up Satan. Fun
