It's the second period and John Kordic and Bob McGill want to fight. They meet up by the penalty boxes and drop the gloves but immediately the linesmen get in and they each grab a man while the two heavyweights square off. Kordic just smiles as he slowly skates into the box while the fans at Chicago Stadium voice their displeasure. Fun

Denis Savard dives while hacking at the puck but misses it and it gets to Brad Marsh who braces himself against the boards while stopping the puck. Marsh then one-hands the puck up the boards but his stick comes up too high and hits Savard right in the nose as he gets to his feet. Savard drops to the ice grabbing for his face but play goes on without a penalty call on Marsh. However most of Savard's teammates on the ice want a piece of Marsh and a brawl breaks out. Reckless stick play by Marsh and Savard wound up with a cut on his nose because of it. Emotion

Marsh high-sticked Savard and that started the brawl. Savard was cut, but somehow Marsh didn't receive a penalty. Emotion

Brad Marsh highsticks Denis Savard but there's no penalty for it and Bob McGill goes after Marsh, giving him a bump while completley ignoring the play. Dave Hannan bumps McGill and Marsh is targeted by Wayne Van Dorp and Steve Larmer. Rob Ramage follows Larmer in and grabs him as a trainer comes out to attend to a down and bloodied Savard. Scott Pearson comes in and gets between Van Dorp and Marsh, grabbing Van Dorp as a linesman pulls Marsh out of the fray. Dave Manson comes in though and he grabs Pearson so Hannan steps in and grabs Manson. Manson then grabs Hannan too and drags both he and Pearson to the ice. Hannan winds up jerseyed on the ice with Manson who throws a right at Hannan while Pearson's just hanging onto Manson's leg. Manson then tries to get away from Pearson and a linesman comes in to break it up. The other linesman gets there too and helps get Hannan and Manson apart as Pearson gets up on his own but Hannan throws a left over the linesmen at Manson. As Manson is escorted to the penalty box, he tries to get away from the linesman to get at Brian Curran, who's already in the box. Curran stands up and jaws at Manson who's wrestled away and into the box. Manson throws something at Curran but it hits the glass separating the boxes and Curran soon tells a linesman. McGill later comes by and tries to talk to Manson to settle him. There's some discussion at the penalty boxes and Savard's taken off the ice when suddenly McGill gets something going with Pearson. It doesn't last long but McGill gets some punches in and gets Pearson down in the end. The linesmen wrestle them apart there while by the benches the rest of the players converge. Savard stays on the ice and grabs hold of Lou Franceschetti with Steve Larmer while Van Dorp has some words with Ramage. A linesman gets between them and escorts Van Dorp off the ice while on the bench, John Kordic has some words for Van Dorp. The rest of the group break up on their own. Another long brawl between these Norris Division rivals in this season. Manson was in the middle of things at the start of it, taking down Pearson and Hannan at the same time. Later, it was Pearson who got mixed up with McGill in a fight that McGill got the best of. All of it broke out after Marsh highsticked Savard yet Marsh didn't really get too much involved in anything at any point. Fun

Savard got high sticked by Brad Marsh...scrum starts, and Manson loses it...he takes down 2 Leafs and punches them...then tries to get at someone in the penalty box...Pearson and McGill end up fighting...Manson wanted Marsh a few times...

the only reason i called this a brawl and not a line brawl is because there were 6 Hawks and 5 Leafs involved...John Kordic almost came off the bench to fight either Van Dorp or McGill, one of whom MAY have come of the Hawks bench...unless the Hawks had pulled their goalie (there was no time display in the TSN broadcast), someone DID come off the Hawks bench...Pearson fought McGill so that Kordic wouldn't come off the bench, and then Kordic and Van Dorp were yapping

I don't know how to call this, but it was funny stuff. Players came together after the Marsh high-stick. Manson grabbed Pearson from behind and Hannan then grabbed Manson from behind and put him to a headlock. But Manson got free and then grabbed Pearson with one hand and Hannan with the other hand and threw the two Leafs to the ice! Announcer was saying "Manson is going wild!". Linesmen got in there two save the two from Manson and Hannan then tried to hit Manson with a sucker punch when linesmen were between them. Funny event indeed. As Manson was being escorted to the penaltybox Brian Curran started yelling at him from the Leafs penaltybox and Manson tried to get at Curran. Then he threw some stuff at Curran from the penaltybox. Fun

I don't think this was a fight, there was never just two players involved and there weren't any punches thrown until the linesmen got in at the very end. mullet's description is pretty good; Dave Manson went into the brawl and grabbed Scott Pearson but was then grabbed by Dave Hannan. Manson took both guys down and kind of roughing around with both of them simultaneously. Eventually Pearson kind of got of there while the linesmen broke up Hannan and Manson. I would say it was a rough but again, it wasn't just two guys involved at any point.Reply

Thanks for the info. We would normally call a rough non-fighting action between more than 2 players a scrum. It's unusual to have a scrum as a part of a brawl but if there's no better way to document what happened, that's how it should be.

Bob McGill clear win Fun

This was a brief contest, but McGill landed several effective blows. Pearson was unable to tie up Bob's right arm. McGill had a strong grip on Scott's right arm. Bob missed a punch and landed two solid blows. Scott missed a right hand. McGill landed an average right and a solid connect. Pearson wrestled him to the ice.

I rate this as a clear win for McGill. He landed some effective shots and a few of them landed with above-average power. Pearson was unable to land any blows and Bob handled him with ease.

Things were calming down when these two started going. I don't know how much the camera missed from the beginning, but what I saw was McGill throwing a few rights to the back of Pearson's head and then they wrestled to the ice.

Clear win since McGill landed the only punches in the fight. Pearson could only get him in a headlock while McGill scored with 3 head punches and then both go down to the ice.

Pearson seemed uninterested in fighting and held onto a headlock the whole fight, McGill threw several windmill rights and landed a couple giving him the narrow win.
