Ken Baumgartner narrow win Fun
7
Ken "The Bomber" Baumgartner and the Tie "The Albanian Assassin" Domi meet up in front of the benches during this heated game between New York cross-town rivals. They eye each other up and issue some verbal challenges, then they decide they wanna go. These two tough guys had a couple run-ins back in the preseason and they clearly want a piece of each other.

Domi tosses aside his mitts and raises his dukes. Baumgartner drops one glove and hurls the other gauntlet at Tie's face (he misses), then goes charging in. The fight is on.

Baumgartner and Domi grab on with the right hands and both go lefty, doing the spin. Baumgartner has the advantage at first, cranking Domi with two big shots to the side of the face. The first punch was a real good one, a stiff shot that nailed Tie in the hinge of his jaw. Domi absorbs the blows and stays on his feet. Domi tries to get Baumgartner under control, but the Bomber is utilizing his longer reach and hits Domi with a couple more good lefts as they spin.

Domi stops the spin and gets Baumgartner's arm tied up. Domi bulls into Bomber and it becomes an in-close battle. Domi throws several left hands and mostly comes up short, but the one punch he does land in this salvo is a good one. Domi and Baumgartner then go back and forth with lefts. Each man gets in several punches. Domi lands another quality punch in this exchange.

The two heavyweights end up grappling hard in front of the Ranger bench, and then the officials intercede. The officials have to work hard to pry them apart. Both men were still trying to get at each other, despite the zebras' presence. Domi has to be literally dragged away by one of the linesmen.

It was a pretty good fight, a close battle. Bomber certainly landed the single best punch of the fight in the very beginning. Ken did well in the first part, but Domi came back gamely and it was even for the rest of the fight. Baumgartner gets a slight edge for that opening salvo of big lefts and outpointing Domi overall.

Right off a draw New York Islanders and New York Rangers' enforcers, Ken Baumgartner and Tie Domi drop the gloves. They square up and get a grip with the right on each others' jerseys. Baumgartner lands two lefts and Domi responds with a missing left as they spin. Baumgartner then lands three lefts while Domi keeps his head low and jersey jabs once with the right. Then Domi misses a left before Baumgartner connects with a left. Domi misses another left and Baumgartner lands another left before throwing two small lefts and connecting on one as their spinning slows down. Domi throws two lefts and lands one and they grapple about with Baumgartner missing a left. Domi throws three lefts then and lands two and Baumgartner lands a left which knocks off Domi's helmet before Domi misses a left. Baumgartner misses a left, Domi lands a left, Baumgartner misses another left, and Domi replies with a missing left. Then Baumgartner lands two lefts and Domi connects on a left after. Baumgartner misses a left and Domi throws three lefts back, landing one, then Baumgartner throws three lefts and lands one as they grapple over to the boards. Domi then lands a left and the referees come in to break it up there. Good bout, each man was swinging and connecting with lefts. Win Baumgartner for landing more punches.

This was a good scrap between Domi and the Bomber. Ken landed a couple of average blows and missed a couple of shots. He landed a partial connect and missed a blow. The men were spinning around in the early portion of the bout. Tie missed four punches. Baumgartner landed an average blow and missed a few shots. Domi landed a decent blow and missed a punch. He landed a partial connect and missed a blow.

Bomber landed a partial connect and an average shot. He missed a few punches. Tie missed a punch and landed a body blow. He missed a shot and landed a decent punch. Ken landed a solid shot and missed two blows. He landed an average shot. Domi missed several punches and landed a body shot. He landed a solid blow. The men wrestled along the boards. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Bomber. I thought he landed more punches in the fight. Domi landed a solid shot late, but I think he came up a little short in this bout.

Pretty good fight. Early in the fight they were spinning around, Baumgartner was swinging with the lefts and landed about 5 while Domi couldn't get going. Then they stopped spinning and from that on it was pretty even, they threw and landed about the same amount. Overall this was a narrow win Baumgartner for landing more punches, it was Baumgartner early and draw middle/late. And the punch count seems to be wrong, Baumgartner definitely threw more punches than Domi in this fight.

I hope I have this one right. They start in tight and Baumgartner gets Domi's helmet. They start spinning and Baumgartner is landing better with his left. Domi starts firing as well, landing almost as many, and the punch of the fight that stumbles Baumgartner and they go down. Tons of shots in this one.

In the spin cycle at the start it's Baumgartner using his reach who is more effective landing a few blows while most of Domi's come up short, they stop spinning and a nice exchange develops, Domi comes on a bit in the 2nd half but Baumgartner lands a couple too holding his early lead, narrow win Baumgartner.

I am pretty sure the victim of this high stick was Tie Domi.

In his interview with Don Cherry on the GRAPEVINE show, Domi talked about this game. He said he got in two fights, drew a five minute power play for the Rangers, and was named one of the stars of the game. After the game, he was feeling great about the good game he played, but then he received word that his father had just passed away.

In his home video, there is footage of Domi being tended to by a trainer on the Ranger bench. The trainer is applying something to a welt on the side of Domi's head, and Tie is grimacing in pain. He then makes his way to the Ranger dressing room for further medical attention.

I always wondered who got the five minute major on Domi and what it was all about. I guess, Mullet, you found the box score?

This fracas between the Islanders and Rangers breaks out when Mick Vukota trips up Kris King. When King stood back up, Vukota went after him and started roughing him up, putting gloves in his face and shoving him around. From across the ice, Tie Domi sees Vukota push around King.

Domi charges in after Vukota. Ken Baumgartner sees what Domi plans on doing and charges after Tie. Domi dives in to tackle Vukota off of King, but Tie misses him when Mick moves aside at the last moment. Domi stops and whirls around to get back in it, tossing aside his gloves. He finds Bomber rushing straight at him. Domi meets Baumgartner head on; they grab on and start wrestling.

As the players on both teams all push and shove, Domi versus Baumgartner becomes the main event, as they start to exchange punches.

King hits Vukota, Vukota doesn't like it and trips King. King gets back up and Vukota goes after him and pushes him down. The two then drop the gloves, but as they grab each other King falls down immediately. Vukota ragdolls King a bit, King grabs Vukota's leg and they just wrestle on the ice. Nothing fight if you even wanna call this a fight.

Tie Domi clear win Fun
4
There's brawl that breaks out and tough guys are on the ice for both sides. Tie Domi tries to get at Mick Vukota but can't and instead winds up with Ken Baumgartner for the second time in the game. Domi and Baumgartner start wrestling in tight and Domi deliberately trips Baumgartner to the ice. A linesman gets there but Domi and Baumgartner get back up they keep going. Domi lands a left and Baumgartner misses a left after as his jersey is over his head. They keep wrestling and Domi switches hands as Baumgartner is blinded by his jersey. Domi throws three lefts and lands two as Baumgartner falls down and then the linesmen break up the fight. Baumgartner has a cut on his forehead afterwards while Domi did a speedbag routine on his way off the ice. Win to Domi for landing the only punches and doing damage on Baumgartner. Pretty short fight in the brawl and while not too eventful, it wasn't a boring fight either.

Tie Domi clear win Fun

As the scrum between the Rangers and Islanders breaks out, Islander heavyweight Mick Vukota roughs up the Rangers' Kris King, prompting King's tough guy teammate Tie Domi to go after Vukota. Domi tries to do a flying tackle on Mick, but Vukota moves at the last moment, and Tie misses him.

Domi whirls around to get back into the fray and fires off his gloves. Domi finds the Islanders' other heavyweight, Ken Baumgartner, rushing straight for him, gloves also off. Bomber goes after Domi, charging into him. They lock up and begin battling.

The two heavyweights grapple and jostle around, and Domi quickly blinds Bomber with his own jersey-front, yanking the sweater up and over Ken's face. Domi then connects a few short uppercuts in-close. Twice, Bomber gets bodyslammed hard during the fight. He was able to get up the first time. After the second slam, the linesmen intervened and pulled them apart. When this fight ended, everyone else on the ice pretty much stopped all of the scrumming and scrapping.

Domi's punches opened up a small gash on Bomber's forehead; you could see the blood as Baumgartner was leaving the ice. Domi taunted Bomber with the speedbag gesture, much to Baumgartner's displeasure.

Domi landed the only punches and thoroughly ragdolled Bomber, and he gets the clear win in a fight that wasn't quite as good as their first scrap of the game.

Domi and the Bomber went at it for the second time during the brawl. Tie secured a take down and the men got back up. Ken's jersey came over his head, so he was at the disadvantage. Domi landed an uppercut that partially connected. Baumgartner missed a shot. Tie landed a couple of solid blows. He missed a shot. The refs stopped the fight as the two wrestled to the ice.

I rate this as a clear win for Domi. He landed with some pop and the Bomber could never get an offense going.

Mick Vukota lines up Troy Mallette for a hit but Mallette sees it coming and gets his arms up to protect himself. However Mallette gets the butt-end of his stick right in Vukota's face, sending him careening into the boards. There's immediately a penalty called on Mallette who stands over the fallen Vukota, who stays down. Mallette then steps back and waits for someone to come after him, dangling the gloves all the while. Rich Pilon charges in to take on Mallette but when Mallette drops the gloves, they collide and Pilon knocks Mallette oto the ice. Pilon's jersey goes over his head as he ends up falling over Mallette. They wrestle around there but the linesmen come in to break it up. Mallette doesn't want to stop though and gets on top of Pilon, forces his helmet and visor off, then gets up and throws a right at Pilon that doesn't connect. After that Mallette is finally lead away from Pilon. Nothing fight.
