Craig Berube narrow win Fun
5
May gave Berube a competitive battle. Alan missed a punch and landed an average right hand. Craig missed a punch, landed a body blow, and missed a shot. May missed a punch and landed a decent left. Berube landed a couple of average left hands.

May missed a punch, landed a decent punch, and missed a left hand. Berube went back to throwing rights. He landed an average punch and a couple of decent blows. He missed a punch. The men began to fall and May missed a final attempt.

I rate this as a narrow win for Berube. It was a close fight and a draw would be an acceptable call. I think Berube landed a couple more punches and with just a bit better pop to earn the win.

Alan May and Craig Berube come together during a stoppage in play and the two heavyweight immediately grab hold of each other once the gloves are off. May misses a right as they get some separation with Berube likewise missing a right. They pause and Berube misses a right before May misses a right, then Berube misses a right and May counters with a missing right that gets him bent over. Berube switches hands and lands a left as May leans away and straightens up. May also switches hands and lands a left before Berube connects on a left again but switches hands. Berube misses a right as May misses a left and then May connects on two lefts while Berube turns away. Berube misses two rights and then loses his footing, falling to the ice while May misses a left and falls over top of Berube. Berube switches hands and misses a left while rolling over on May but the linesmen get in and break it up. Scrappy fight from both guys. Neither was really able to generate much momentum here, they each countered when the other tried to get going. Both landed a couple so I call it a draw.

Both had good defensive grips applied so most of the early rights came up short, so they both switched to lefty and each landed a couple before tumbling to the ice, draw.

John Kordic narrow win Fun
7
Kordic and Carkner had a good action bout. Terry struggled with his balance in this contest. He fell to the ice at the beginning of the fight. John landed a solid blow, missed a punch, and landed an average left. He missed a punch and landed a decent blow.

Rambo landed a pretty good shot that rocked Carkner. He landed an average punch and missed a blow. Terry landed two solid lefts and an average shot. Kordic missed a punch, landed a solid blow, and landed a pretty good blow. This one rocked Carkner as well. Terry missed a punch, landed a solid connect, and landed a solid blow.

Kordic landed a couple of solid lefts as Carkner was getting up. He missed a few punches and landed an average connect. Terry clinched and held John close on the inside. He landed a few decent connects and a couple of ineffective blows. Kordic held and the refs stopped the contest. Terry landed a solid blow after the officials tied up John's arms.

I rate this as a narrow win for Kordic. He landed the best two blows of the fight. Carkner landed several effective punches and a few above-average blows. John landed the better quality of punches and earned the win.

John Kordic hits Martin Hostak from behind, levelling him along the boards but not into them. Regardless, Terry Carkner steps in and instigates a fight with Kordic by giving him a forearm to the face. Kordic tries to grab on right away but Carkner backs up to square off but he goes too fast and loses his footing. Kordic tries to pounce on Carkner as he regains his balance but can't grab him. They square off for a couple more seconds and then Kordic grabs Carkner and throws two lefts, landing one pretty well. Carkner just puts his head down while grabbing Kordic who misses a left and tries to get at Carkner's helmet. Carkner raises his head and lands a left but then Kordic misses a left that knocks Carkner's grip off. Carkner grabs Kordic immediately while Kordic misses a left, then Carkner lands a decent left as his helmet falls off. Carkner lands another good left as Kordic lands a good left of his own and then Kordic misses a follow up left. Carkner misses a left and gets his head down as Kordic leans away and then throws four lefts, landing two. Carkner raises his head and lands two lefts while Kordic misses two lefts but it's Carkner who goes off balance afterward. Carkner prods with the right as he backs up but then he falls onto his knees as they spin around once. Kordic throws four lefts and lands one while his helmet comes off and Carkner gets up. Carkner jersey jabs at Kordic while missing a left and then Kordic throws two lefts and lands one while Carkner puts his head down. Carkner switches hands and gets in close on Kordic, throwing three rights and landing one afterwards. Carkner then raises his head and throws five rights, landing four. They wrestle around, each clearly tired out and so the linesmen move in. Carkner misses two rights but they don't stop the linesmen who get between the two and break it up. Very good fight and a draw in my book. Kordic landed most of his punches pretty well and got in a good one as they were exchanging openly. Kordic also had Carkner off balance that missed but Carkner stood right in there and was throwing them back, he didn't land as many as Kordic but did land a couple big ones. As fight went on, Carkner got stronger and outlasted Kordic to get the best of it late though he didn't land many of his punches as well as Kordic did early. A really even fight to me.

Kordic nails Martin Hostak with a nice hit along the boards. Carkner comes in and takes exception to the hit. At first it looks like Carkner is running away from Kordic but he eventually settles down. Carkner looked to be off balance on a couple of occasions during the fight. They both traded left punches as they had a grip of each others sweaters with their right arms. Both connected with a few good punches to the face. It however seemed to me that Kordic was a bit better for the most part of the fight. Carkner finished stronger.

Kordic nails a Philly player near the boards and tgets the puck, then Carkner pinches real low and hits Kordic. The gloves come off immediately and Carkner is backing up for space, he turns and falls only to get up to kordic landing 3 lefts, they both throw for a bit but Kordic gets a few more solid shots in near the end.

Good back and forth fight, nice open exchange between the two that last pretty much the entire fight, they trade lefts early with Kordic getting the better of it landing some solid shots, Carkner lands some early blows as well but really begins his comeback after switching hands and tactics by pulling the fight in close, he lands a few in tight blows to close the fight strong, Carkner may have landed a extra blow or two but Kordic landed the better shots nearly dropping Carkner with one, draw.

This was a brutal and intentionally dirty elbow to the head by Hunter. Dale was a master of throwing cheap shots. Murphy was along the boards looking for the loose puck. Hunter leaped in the air and left his skates. He led with an elbow and made heavy contact with Gord's head. Murphy stayed down for a long time. He was in visible distress. This was a gutless play by Hunter. It was a deliberate attempt to injure. It was actually sickening to watch. Dirty

This was a very filthy cheap shot by Dale Hunter.

Listening to the Philly commentators, I have never heard Bill Clement so angry and disgusted, but you can hardly blame him. "A spear in the face is too good for Hunter" and "it's what he damn well deserves" and "what a crock" and "someone needs to beat the crap out of him"... definitely out of character for Clement, who was always cool and professional in his color commentary.

In this case, though, I agree with him completely and can easily forgive him for losing his impartiality.

Paul Holmgren was livid after Hunter deliberately threw a huge elbow to Murphy's head. Homer was a veteran of the wild style of play in the 1970's. He grabbed a stick and slammed it against the partition between the benches. He was directing his anger towards some member of the Capitals (I'm not sure if it was the coach or Hunter himself).

Holmgren continued to fume. Ron Hextall began yapping at the Washington bench as well. A trainer was out attending to the fallen Murphy. Paul got down at the player entrance. He had a malicious look in his eyes. He resembled the pugnacious player of his youth. He held onto the stick and fans may have wondered if he was planning on using it.

Alan May came over and drew Homer's ire. Paul said something unpleasant to May. Scott Mellanby took a cue and went over to fight Alan. Holmgren settled down somewhat after that. This was a pretty wild reaction by Homer. I wouldn't have wanted to get in his way with that stick in his hands.

May was mouthing off to Flyers coach Paul Holmgren. Mellanby didn't like the disrespect towards his boss. He challenged Alan to a fight. May landed a partial connect. Scott missed a punch and slipped right away. Alan landed a left with average to solid impact. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for May. Mellanby slipped and Alan landed an effective shot to secure the win.

This takes place after Hunter's vicious elbow on Murphy. Holmgren freaks at the bench and yells at the Washington bench and hits a stick over the plexiglass.
He is majorly upset. Things get a little tense and no one really knows what to do.
Then May skates to the Flyers bench having words with a pissed off Holmgren and Mellanby sees that and jumps right in against May. But its over in a few seconds still at the boards. Mellanby simply protects his coach and the team as well as sending a message.

Mellanby's view of what happened : "I was on the ice at the time and it was a tough situation. I was a reactionary thing and I wasn't ready for it. Everybody was trying to get a piece of Hunter, and then Alan May skated over to our bench. He was yapping at coach Paul Holmgren, so I skated over to defend my coach. Alan was challenging our bench, so I dropped the gloves with him. I didn't do that well in that fight, but I stood up for my team and I proved a point. Paul was going crazy, swinging the stick at the Capitals bench, and he had every right to be upset. What Hunter did was very cheap, but it's part of the game and you have to learn how to respond to that."Reply

I think this should be changed to a cheapshot, it was a clear elbow by Don Beaupre and not much else.

Also, the first cheapshot by Craig Berube could probably be considered just a hit. I think it was added a cheapshot solely because it was on the goalie.

Underestimated brawl but also a very, very interesting action-packed brawl because alot of diverse action occurs in this brawl such as: Kushner's complete domination of Mike Lalor ... pitiful Mike Lalor should feel totally embarrassed. The tables than turn for Kushner because Kypreos makes him pay for the Lalor beating as Kypreos kicks the crap out of Kushner with a million facial-punches which forces the refs to throw him a life-preserver to keep him from drowning. Then the dynamics change even once again when an already-beaten Al Iafrate (from an earlier battle) invites Murray Baron to fight BUT Iafrate is in no condition to fight (face is cut up). Baron sees that Iafrate is already half-shot but decides to rub salt in the wound anyway by giving Iafrate a double-whammy in which Iafrate receives 2 more facial-punches by a different person (Baron). Fun

Kordic wanted Berube after Berube's cheap shot on Beaupre. Once Berube was back up from the pile of players he and Kordic looked ready to go, but linesmen were between them immediately and didn't let them go, Berube threw one punch over them but this wasn't really a fight at all even though both got fighting majors. Fun

I saw bits and pieces of this brawl and it looked Kordic went down on top of Berube in the first pileup behind the net. Several players jumped in so no punches apparently landed. Later it looked as if they tried to throw some more punches. Looked like Berube took a couple of swings over a linesman. Might have been more to it than was shown on the clip but couldn't see any punches land by either.Reply

hb11 has it right here. I don't think at any point in this brawl did Berube and Kordic actually get together. There may have been a couple punches thrown over linesmen and wrestling on the ice, but I have seen this event a few times and I fail to see where they got together for a "fight". I think with the reputations of the 2 players, the refs may have just decided to give both of them fighting majors just to get them off the ice for a bit but I am certain they never actually got together to fight each other.Reply

I didn't mention in my post that Kordic and Berube did get fighting majors, which is absurd because they didn't even get together to engage in a fight, but to call this a rough is more accurate. Like I said, I think the refs wanted to cool the situation down after Dale Hunter had cheapshotted Gord Murphy, so he gave Kordic and Berube fighting majors just to get them off the ice, even though they didn't fight.Reply

Looked like Kordic and Berube had a hold of each other and were ready to go at it, but unfortunately one linesman was between them and then Kevin Collins also jumped in to break it up. Berube threw one punch over the linesmen and that was it. It would have been great to see these two go at it.Reply

Dale Kushner clear win Fun

This was a pretty good scrap in a wild brawl. Kushner missed a couple of rights. Lalor missed a blow and landed a decent shot. He missed a punch and landed an average connect. He missed a right. Dale landed a partial connect and missed a left. Mike missed a blow and landed an average right. Kushner completely took over the fight. He landed an average blow and a decent shot. He missed a couple of rights. He landed an average blow and a solid punch. He missed a couple of shots. He landed three average punches and a solid right. The refs stepped in and stopped the contest.

I rate this as a clear win for Kushner. He won the fight easily. Lalor managed to tie him up at the end, so I think a clear win is the right call.

Out of the scrum behind the net Kushner and Lalor drop the gloves. Kushner throws some lefts and Lalor some rights, each landing. Kushner switches to the right and lands some more including a good uppercut and he gains control with Lalor putting his head down into his chest. Kushner throws a few more onto the back and knocks Lalor to the ice. He gets up and they grapple briefly before it's broken up.

Kypreos won this one easily. The men wrestled some at first. Nick landed a solid blow and a good left. Kushner missed a punch and landed an average left. Kypreos missed a few punches, landed a partial connect, and landed a solid shot. He missed a punch, landed two decent blows, and missed a shot. He landed a solid shot, missed a punch, and landed two solid blows. He missed a punch and landed a solid shot. Baron jumped in to save Kushner as the third-man-in.

I rate this as a decisive win for Kypreos. He pummeled Kushner with power shots and Baron had to step in to bail out his teammate.

This happened after the Kushner-Lalor fight and Kushner was gassed but tried to throw with Kypreos. They exchanged a couple toe-to-toe lefts at the beginning with Kypreos landing better and he dominates the rest of the fight raining lefts on his weary opponent until he goes to the ice and starts to cover up. Kushner takes a good beating because the officials are otherwise occupied so Murray Baron comes in, jumps on Kypreos' back and throws a couple of rights at him. From there Beaupre comes in and Pete Peeters skates down to jump on him and another big melee ensues.

Nick being interviewed by reporter Eric Servetah : "What happened was that our Dale Hunter ran Gord Murphy of Philly pretty good earlier in the game and it set the stage for the brawl. So I ended up with Kushner behind the net and I was throwing them pretty good. I had the lefts going and it was one of those games where I knew they were going to come after us at some point to even up for the Hunter incident. I remember that The Chief was going with John Kordic, and Murray Baron landed some shots on Al Iafrate."Reply

Murray Baron clear win Fun

It appears that Iafrate was bleeding even before he squared off with the big heavyweight Baron. Al took off his jersey for added mobility. The square-off was long and tense. Murray landed two average blows and missed a shot. He missed a punch and landed an average right. The men clinched and the refs were quick on the scene. Iafrate missed a final left after the fact.

I rate this as a clear win for Baron. He landed a few average to solid shots and Iafrate didn't generate much offense.

Another situation where everybody piles up behind the net and wrestles each other.
Baron and Iafrate stands and looks at one another when the melee is pretty much over and they decide to go, but they're not hurrying to get it over with.
Iafrate calmly takes off his jersey and then they size up each other for a while, waiting for someone to make the first move. It looks pretty cool. Baron's just waiting for him to get done.
And even before they clinch, Iafrate had a cut under his eye and was pretty bloodied up. The only punch that really landed came from Baron's fist, right in the face, maybe even on the cut, of Iafrate. They brake them up and blood streams from Al' face.

The fight wasn't really much, but the square off with Iafrate taking off his jersey when he was already bleeding was entertaining. Baron landed only punches and I think one landed pretty well to the side of the face where Iafrate was already cut. Win Baron.

Only saw a partial clip but Iafrate was cut from the earlier scrum. He pulls his jersey over his head and off and decides to go with Baron. In the 10 second clip Baron does most of the throwing connecting with at least one good punch. Iafrate appeared to have a bigger gash after the fight so assuming Baron's punch might have worsened the situation for him.Reply

Hatcher lands the first shot, a pretty good right to the helmet (you can see it only on the replay). Both guys swinging, looks good but nothing really connects. Then Carkner gets Hatcher to his knees and throws a few quick rights to the head and then gets wrestled down by Hatcher. Draw for sure.

Decent exchange between the two, Hatcher landed a decent early right that stung a bit and then followed up with several that blows that missed for the most part but helped control the action keeping Carkner at bay, not much landed in this fight but Hatcher landed an extra blow, pressed the action and was the busier fighter, narrow in Hatcher.
