This fight started behind Beaupre. Lots of interference from both players and refs as they started to fight.
Iafrate gets a good start and hammers Kushner, Kushner then comes back and hammers Iafrate.

John Kordic narrow win Fun

Kordic nails Martin Hostak with a nice hit along the boards. Carkner comes in and takes exception to the hit. At first it looks like Carkner is running away from Kordic but he eventually settles down. Carkner looked to be off balance on a couple of occasions during the fight. They both traded left punches as they had a grip of each others sweaters with their right arms. Both connected with a few good punches to the face. It however seemed to me that Kordic was a bit better for the most part of the fight. Carkner finished stronger.

Pretty funny stuff... Carkner runs around for awhile, looks like he doesn't want any thing to do with Kordic. Eventually they go at it with a good evenly matched fight.

Kordic nails a Philly player near the boards and tgets the puck, then Carkner pinches real low and hits Kordic. The gloves come off immediately and Carkner is backing up for space, he turns and falls only to get up to kordic landing 3 lefts, they both throw for a bit but Kordic gets a few more solid shots in near the end.

John Kordic narrow win Fun
N/A
Definitely a narrow win by Kordic. Starts off with both facing off against one another without any grappling (open-style fist-fight). They at first skate circles around one another which causes Carkner to lose his footing, so he is off-balance at first while Kordic lands a facial-punch. He stabilizes but Kordic is forging ahead with 10 more facial-punches while Carkner is only able to land 2 solid punches during this almost one-sided battle so far. Then, Carkner lands the last 3 unaswered facial-punches of the bout but these were only short-traveled facial punches. Total everything up, and Kordic edges Carkner out due to the one-sidedness in the early-going of the bout. Good action.

A situation developes near the boards and everyone gets involved, Sabourin and Kushner goes away from the others and tangles at the glass. Nothing happens, they shoudn't have called fighting majors on them. They get a misconduct as well.
They both have each other very well tied up.

This was a very filthy cheap shot by Dale Hunter.

Listening to the Philly commentators, I have never heard Bill Clement so angry and disgusted, but you can hardly blame him. "A spear in the face is too good for Hunter" and "it's what he damn well deserves" and "what a crock" and "someone needs to beat the crap out of him"... definitely out of character for Clement, who was always cool and professional in his color commentary.

In this case, though, I agree with him completely and can easily forgive him for losing his impartiality.

This takes place after Hunter's vicious elbow on Murphy. Holmgren freaks at the bench and yells at the Washington bench and hits a stick over the plexiglass.
He is majorly upset. Things get a little tense and no one really knows what to do.
Then May skates to the Flyers bench having words with a pissed off Holmgren and Mellanby sees that and jumps right in against May. But its over in a few seconds still at the boards. Mellanby simply protects his coach and the team as well as sending a message.

Long delay of the game after Dale Hunter went head-hunting on Gord Murphy. Holmgren was furious while he barked alot of verbal abuse at the Capitals. Then Alan May bravely approaches the Philly bench and that's when Mellanby skates into May. However, Mellanby looked like he ran into a brick wall because May didn't budge from his standing position on the ice which is followed by May shoving Mellanby down to his knees and quickly connecting on 1 big uppercut. The fight then ceases when the refs jump in. Narrow win for May. I applaud May for boldly going face-to-face with Holmgren & the Flyer bench. Unique overall brawling in this game which makes it one of my all-time favorites.

Mellanby's view of what happened : "I was on the ice at the time and it was a tough situation. I was a reactionary thing and I wasn't ready for it. Everybody was trying to get a piece of Hunter, and then Alan May skated over to our bench. He was yapping at coach Paul Holmgren, so I skated over to defend my coach. Alan was challenging our bench, so I dropped the gloves with him. I didn't do that well in that fight, but I stood up for my team and I proved a point. Paul was going crazy, swinging the stick at the Capitals bench, and he had every right to be upset. What Hunter did was very cheap, but it's part of the game and you have to learn how to respond to that."Reply

Underestimated brawl but also a very, very interesting action-packed brawl because alot of diverse action occurs in this brawl such as: Kushner's complete domination of Mike Lalor ... pitiful Mike Lalor should feel totally embarrassed. The tables than turn for Kushner because Kypreos makes him pay for the Lalor beating as Kypreos kicks the crap out of Kushner with a million facial-punches which forces the refs to throw him a life-preserver to keep him from drowning. Then the dynamics change even once again when an already-beaten Al Iafrate (from an earlier battle) invites Murray Baron to fight BUT Iafrate is in no condition to fight (face is cut up). Baron sees that Iafrate is already half-shot but decides to rub salt in the wound anyway by giving Iafrate a double-whammy in which Iafrate receives 2 more facial-punches by a different person (Baron). Fun

Kordic wanted Berube after Berube's cheap shot on Beaupre. Once Berube was back up from the pile of players he and Kordic looked ready to go, but linesmen were between them immediately and didn't let them go, Berube threw one punch over them but this wasn't really a fight at all even though both got fighting majors. Fun

I saw bits and pieces of this brawl and it looked Kordic went down on top of Berube in the first pileup behind the net. Several players jumped in so no punches apparently landed. Later it looked as if they tried to throw some more punches. Looked like Berube took a couple of swings over a linesman. Might have been more to it than was shown on the clip but couldn't see any punches land by either.Reply

hb11 has it right here. I don't think at any point in this brawl did Berube and Kordic actually get together. There may have been a couple punches thrown over linesmen and wrestling on the ice, but I have seen this event a few times and I fail to see where they got together for a "fight". I think with the reputations of the 2 players, the refs may have just decided to give both of them fighting majors just to get them off the ice for a bit but I am certain they never actually got together to fight each other.Reply

I didn't mention in my post that Kordic and Berube did get fighting majors, which is absurd because they didn't even get together to engage in a fight, but to call this a rough is more accurate. Like I said, I think the refs wanted to cool the situation down after Dale Hunter had cheapshotted Gord Murphy, so he gave Kordic and Berube fighting majors just to get them off the ice, even though they didn't fight.Reply

Looked like Kordic and Berube had a hold of each other and were ready to go at it, but unfortunately one linesman was between them and then Kevin Collins also jumped in to break it up. Berube threw one punch over the linesmen and that was it. It would have been great to see these two go at it.Reply

Out of the scrum behind the net Kushner and Lalor drop the gloves. Kushner throws some lefts and Lalor some rights, each landing. Kushner switches to the right and lands some more including a good uppercut and he gains control with Lalor putting his head down into his chest. Kushner throws a few more onto the back and knocks Lalor to the ice. He gets up and they grapple briefly before it's broken up.

This happened after the Kushner-Lalor fight and Kushner was gassed but tried to throw with Kypreos. They exchanged a couple toe-to-toe lefts at the beginning with Kypreos landing better and he dominates the rest of the fight raining lefts on his weary opponent until he goes to the ice and starts to cover up. Kushner takes a good beating because the officials are otherwise occupied so Murray Baron comes in, jumps on Kypreos' back and throws a couple of rights at him. From there Beaupre comes in and Pete Peeters skates down to jump on him and another big melee ensues.

Nick being interviewed by reporter Eric Servetah : "What happened was that our Dale Hunter ran Gord Murphy of Philly pretty good earlier in the game and it set the stage for the brawl. So I ended up with Kushner behind the net and I was throwing them pretty good. I had the lefts going and it was one of those games where I knew they were going to come after us at some point to even up for the Hunter incident. I remember that The Chief was going with John Kordic, and Murray Baron landed some shots on Al Iafrate."Reply

Murray Baron clear win Fun

Iafrate puts up a phony-front during a fight against Baron but he's not in any condition to fight because his face was bloodied & bruised from earlier in the brawl. Baron knew this but didn't take pity on him, so he facially-connects with 2 punches anyway. It's not Baron's fault because Iafrate invited him to fight. Clear win for Baron, in which Iafrate had no business getting into this square-off since Iafrate was in no condition to fight.

The refs should have detected Iafrate's disadvantage and should have gotten in between Baron & Iafrate very early to prevent it from even happening. This same scenario happened many times to other clubs when they faced the Flyers during brawls in which the combatants were in no shape to fight but had to get involved anyway and then predictably get pummeled into oblivion, such as the Rangers Ed Johnstone vs. Hoyda in 1978 & Islanders Gerry Hart vs. Bridgman in 1979. I don't mean to complain but it's disheartening to see one-sided beatings go on for so long... It can be a crazy & sad game.

Another situation where everybody piles up behind the net and wrestles each other.
Baron and Iafrate stands and looks at one another when the melee is pretty much over and they decide to go, but they're not hurrying to get it over with.
Iafrate calmly takes off his jersey and then they size up each other for a while, waiting for someone to make the first move. It looks pretty cool. Baron's just waiting for him to get done.
And even before they clinch, Iafrate had a cut under his eye and was pretty bloodied up. The only punch that really landed came from Baron's fist, right in the face, maybe even on the cut, of Iafrate. They brake them up and blood streams from Al' face.

The fight wasn't really much, but the square off with Iafrate taking off his jersey when he was already bleeding was entertaining. Baron landed only punches and I think one landed pretty well to the side of the face where Iafrate was already cut. Win Baron.

Only saw a partial clip but Iafrate was cut from the earlier scrum. He pulls his jersey over his head and off and decides to go with Baron. In the 10 second clip Baron does most of the throwing connecting with at least one good punch. Iafrate appeared to have a bigger gash after the fight so assuming Baron's punch might have worsened the situation for him.Reply

Draw Fun

Hatcher lands the first shot, a pretty good right to the helmet (you can see it only on the replay). Both guys swinging, looks good but nothing really connects. Then Carkner gets Hatcher to his knees and throws a few quick rights to the head and then gets wrestled down by Hatcher. Draw for sure.

Kevin Hatcher narrow win Fun

Carkner crosschecked Hatcher to start it all. Hatcher got up and immedeatly went at Carkner.
Some real hard shots were delivered, not a whole lot landing but it looked good.
Slight edge Hatcher for controlling it mostly.
