Presley roughed it up with Gilmour in front of the Rangers net. Presley decked Gilmour with a hard gloved punch, Gill jumped in to fight Presley after that.
Gill just pummels Presley who never dropped his gloves.

Tie Domi win by KO
Fight called Unfair by mullet on Feb 15, 2005
Reason: Tie Domi suckered Ulf Samuelsson
 Fun
10
This was one of the most damaging and notorious sucker punches in league history. Tie Domi had a grudge against Samuelsson for a cheap shot in a previous season. Tie was tangled up with Ulf in the corner. He pushed Samuelsson to the ice. Ulf grabbed his stick and the two got in front of the Rangers net.

Domi landed a perfectly timed and perfectly placed left hook under Ulf's visor. The blow landed with devastating impact on his jaw and sent him down hard. Samuelsson was badly hurt and the stretcher came out on the ice. This was a KO in an unfair fight. Samuelsson was completely relaxed and did not expect the big left hook.

Samuelsson was a hated figure in the league. He was known as a cheap shot artist who often declined to put up his dukes and settle differences in a bare knuckle scrap. The clip I saw on YouTube showed the incident and some comments by Brian Burke. Burke was a top NHL executive at the time.

Burke addressed the fact that Samuelsson was known as a dirty player. He acknowledged that in his remarks. Still, he said that the attack by Domi was unwarranted. He said that it wasn't a fight and that Samuelsson had his gloves on and was an unsuspecting victim. He actually compared Ulf to a victim of a sexual assault. The comments were controversial and interesting in that few players who were victims of such an attack would draw such comparisons. It was almost like Burke anticipated that many people felt that Ulf deserved such treatment for his notoriously dirty style of play. He felt that he had to justify the harsh suspension that Domi received.

The clip also had an interview with Domi. Tie seemed shocked by the severity of the suspension. He didn't express any remorse for the attack. He expressed that he loved his teammates and was looking forward to supporting them in any way he could.

This was an unforgettable incident. Although there was a need for the league to take strong action, few hockey fans felt sorry for Samuelsson. Ulf had no scruples when it came to potentially ending a guy's career with a cheap shot or stick work. Domi was willing to take a suspension to make a point that Ulf needed to back off and give him room on the ice. It is likely that Samuelsson didn't mess with the Albanian Assassin too much after this brutal KO.

Tie Domi win by KO
Fight called Unfair by mullet on Feb 15, 2005
Reason: Tie Domi suckered Ulf Samuelsson
 Fun
10
The seeds of this incident were sown in a game late in the 1993-94 season. At the time, Tie Domi was with the Winnipeg Jets and Ulf Samuelsson was with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In that March 1994 game, Ulf speared Domi in the groin with his stick and got away with it. There was no penalty call and Domi wasn't able to get any retaliation in on Ulfie, either. It has been said that hockey players have long memories, and Ulf Samuelsson would find this to be painfully true.

Fast forward from that March 1994 game to this October 1995 night in Toronto, early in the 1995-96 season. This was the next time Domi and Samuelsson faced each other in a game. The uniforms had changed (Ulf was now with the New York Rangers and Domi had returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs), but the bad feelings definitely remained.

The problem is, Ulf Samuelsson will never fight a heavyweight straight-up.

If you drop your gloves and challenge him, he'll laugh at you and skate away, leaving you looking foolish and maybe costing your team a penalty.

If you try to grab him to force him into a fight, he'll just turtle and let you get tossed out of the game (anyone else remember Cam Neely futilely trying to get back at Ulfie for the knee hits?).

If you try to rough him up, he'll pretend he's been hurt and take a dive so you get penalized (anyone recall Todd Ewen nudging Ulfie with a light glove to the face and then Ulfie falling down as if he were struck dead?).

The bottom line: Ulf Samuelsson is/was a real scumbag. An effective, hard-playing, hard-hitting defensive-minded blueliner, but a sneaky scumbag nonetheless.

So, what is a self-respecting tough guy to do in this case? Simple: fight fire with fire. You get back at the cheap shot artist by giving him a taste of his own medicine with a cheap shot of your own.

The incident: the Leafs' Domi and the Rangers' Samuelsson collide in the corner while going for the puck. Ulfie made a classic dive, falling to the ice as if he got shot. A delayed penalty for "boarding" was called on Domi. Tie tried to follow the play, but Ulfie held him up by holding the Toronto tough guy's stick (and naturally, no call was made on this ACTUAL infraction). Domi and Ulfie were side by side in front of the Ranger net, and a grinning Samuelsson taunted Domi.

So, Domi took care of business.

Tie shed his left glove and wiped the grin off Ulfie's face with a left-handed suckerpunch to the chin of the unsuspecting Swede. Ulfie fell backwards, unconscious, landing in the goal crease. Samuelsson's helmeted head hit the ice surface and he suffered a gash on the back his skull, too. Ranger goalie Mike Richter protested verbally to Domi, but just stood by. Ray Ferraro came in and grabbed Domi, and then all of the other players and officials got in there and broke it up.

Domi was ejected from the game. Samuelsson was eventually brought back to consciousness. He sat on the ice and his mouth hung open slackly, his eyes blank. He had no idea where he was. A stretcher was brought out on the ice, but they didn't need it. After tending to the wound on the back of his head, the medical staff helped Samuelsson to his skates and assisted him off the ice. With two men still supporting him, Samuelsson shakily made his way to the dressing room.

Domi eventually received an eight game suspension for his actions while Samuelsson missed four games with a concussion.

Simply put, this incident was awesome. A dirty player finally got what was coming to him, some long-overdue punishment. Anyone who condemns Domi over this is DEAD WRONG. The only way to get a scumbag like Ulf Samuelsson is to either get lucky enough to catch him with his head down or deliver a cheap shot to him. He certainly won't fight a heavyweight like Tie Domi, at least not willingly.

What's interesting is that Darren McCarty is almost universally praised for mugging Claude Lemieux. Claude was a cheap scumbag, just like Ulfie. Claude had something coming to him, too. McCarty also suckered his opponent, just like Domi did. And McCarty went above and beyond suckerpunching his opponent, putting a beating on Claude and slamming his head into the boards, to boot.

Don't get me wrong: what McCarty did was incredible. I loved every second of it, just like I loved every second of what Domi did to Ulfie. But why is McCarty lauded for his actions, while some people condemn Domi? They both put cheapshots on scumbags who had it coming. I guess some people just have different standards for different people.

Nice shot, Tie!

Samuelsson deserved every bit of this.

As most hockey fans know Samuelsson is one of the dirtiest hitters to ever play and has injured many hockey players with his dangerous knee on knee hits. In addition he will never fight or answer the bell for his actions. However his style of play finally catches up with him here.

Domi and Samuelsson both went into the corner after the puck and Samuelsson takes a dive and goes to the ice. Domi is getting a penalty and as he is skating to the front of the net Samuelsson follows him and hooks Domi. He then starts taunting Domi, further infuriating Tie. Well Domi decides to take matters into his own hands. He drops his left glove and quickly catches Samuelsson completely by surprise as he DROPS him with a left hand. Samuelsson was out cold and was clearly not going anywhere after that. The expression on his face when the camera showed a closeup of him down on the ice was priceless.

This was a dirty shot but no one should critizize Domi for it because this was long overdue for Samuelsson. He has hurt so many players with his antics including ending the career of a great power forward ( Cam Neely) so it was about time that someone took a cheapshot on him and this was on par in excitement with McCarty hammering Lemieux. The only thing you can do to a cheapshot artist that won't answer the bell, is to catch him off guard. That is what McCarty did to Lemieux and what Domi did to Samuelsson. A job well done by Domi.

Back when Ulf Samuelsson was on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tie Domi on the Winnipeg Jets, Samuelsson speared Domi in the groin and Domi never was able to get back at Samuelsson but Domi would get his revenge here. Now with Domi on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Samuelsson on the New York Rangers they meet again with little time left of the clock. Domi and Samuelsson go to the endboards battling for the puck with Domi getting his arms wrapped around Samuelsson. Samuelsson embellishes, going down and drawing a penalty on Domi. Samuelsson then gets up and grabs Domi's stick before they settle in front of the Ranger's net and goalie Mike Richter. Domi waits for a moment and then throws off his left glove and delivers a huge left hand right to the jaw of Samuelsson. Samuelsson's knocked right out and falls back to the ice while Domi just stands over. Richter gestures for a penalty on Domi but does nothing else and then other players come in and crowd around Domi but nothing comes of it. Samuelsson is out cold and needs assistance from medical staff. When Samuelsson comes to he's still out of it, just sitting on the ice for a while before being helped off. Samuelsson suffered a concussion and missed four games while the NHL suspended Domi for eight games. This was an obvious cheapshot as Domi suckerpunched an unsuspecting Samuelsson but Domi had his reasons.

Well it all started out when Domi boarded Ulf and was going to get a penalty anyway, so Ulf grabs onto Domi's stick and that pisses off Domi even more. So Domi drags Ulf to the front of the net and gives him a huge sucker punch. The commentater on the video I watch counted to 10, so it was a big KO. Ulf deserved it.

Although Samuelsson is such a cheap player, it's a shame that someone like Bertuzzi got so much shit for his cheap shot, and Domi was able to get away with a lot of cheap shots that were almost as bad in his career.Reply

You can't say that Samuelsson didn't deserve this. Besides you can't compare Domi to Simon. Simon is a loose cannon with anger problems. Domi was a straight up tough heavyweight who sometimes did do some cheap things but he usually had a reason. I'm not saying if Domi does something cheap its okay but Domi usually has a reason for what he does and Simon just snaps and loses control.

Simon-HollwegReply

Comparing Domi-Samuelsson to Simon-Hollweg is comparing apples and oranges, ya know? The biggest difference between what Domi did to Ulfie (and McCarty did to Lemieux, as another example) and what Simon did to Hollweg is that one guy used his fists, the other used his stick.

Yes, you can do a lot of damage with your fists (as Ulfie and Claude evidenced), but a stick-swing like Simon's could possibly permanently maim or even kill somebody. Using your stick like a weapon is crossing the line. It was no accident: Simon clearly decided to take his stick and try to severely injure Hollweg with it. If Simon had drilled him with a punch, yes, he'd have inflicted some pain on Hollweg, but there wouldn't have been any danger of a crippling injury. The stick swing could very well have made a vegetable out of Hollweg. A couple inches lower, it would have been a blow to the throat. A couple inches over, it would have been a blow to the temple.

The other thing is to compare the transgressions of the victims here.
With Ulf, he had used his stick and speared Domi in the balls in another game.
With Claude, he had shattered the face of a teammate with a hit from behind. Hollweg put a check on Simon that was somewhat from behind, but did no serious harm.

You can see how Ulfie and Claude earned their beatings. They deserved it.
But truthfully, what Hollweg did wasn't really deserving of a baseball-swing in the face.

Hollweg is an annoying, semi-dirty player, but he pales in comparison to Ulf Samuelsson, the most vile cheapshot artist ever to lace 'em up. Hollweg hasn't done anything that compares to the stuff Ulf has done. Ulfie's resume includes things like spearing Domi in the balls, spearing Kocur in the balls, slashing Pierre Mondou in the eye (and ending his career), taking out the knee of Brian Bellows, taking out the knee of Brian Skrudland, and taking out the knee of Cam Neely (which hampered and prematurely ended Cam's great career).

Domi's suckerpunch on Ulfie was justice. Simon's stick-swing was a guy snapping and losing control. There are plenty of major differences between the two.

You bring up some good points, but let's be real here. Hollweg isn't just some "annoying, semi-dirty player", he's the epitome of a cheap shot artist, and then some. Even tonight (well last night technically) as we speak he threw another vicious hit from behind on a player and will get suspended for it. When will he learn his lesson? Hitting someone from behind to me is just as bad as what Simon did to Hollweg. If he continues to do this, he will break someone's neck and possibly end that person's career and...maybe, kill someone. It was a case of 'Bad Karma' for what Simon did to Hollweg, he had it coming, and he probably has something worse coming for him soon.Reply

I have to admit I haven't seen too many flagrant cheapshots by Hollweg. Can you provide a list of some of his worst hits? I'd like to see some.

Well, how nice a fella is off the ice doesn't necessarily mean he's a nice fella on the ice. Nor does being a "good guy" off the ice mean that stuff done on the ice is given a pass.

Ulf Samuelssom committed some real atrocities in his time (cheapshots and bad injuries to guys like Skrudland, Neely, Bellows, Mondou, etc) and almost never backed it up by dropping the gloves. Instead, he'd usually turtle or dive to draw people into penalties when folks would come after him for the stuff he did. A cheapshot was the only way to get him.

He may have been a good guy off the ice, but in the ice, Ulfie was The Ultimate Scumbag. He deserved this suckerpunch, and Domi deserves praise for delivering it, not denigration.

Kocur returned the favor to Ulfie, either later in the same game, or in another game. I have a Coach's Corner where Don Cherry played a list of Ulfie's worst cheap shots; he showed the spear on Kocur.

The spear to the nuts of Kocur looked exactly like the spear he got Domi with. Like with Domi, Joey moved in to bump Ulfie, and Samuelsson snuck in a nasty spear right in the balls. Just like Domi did, Kocur crumpled to the ice in pain, and Ulfie got away with it (at least for the moment).

Kocur paid back Ulfie right away, while Domi's revenge took a year to deliver (which would be the next time Tie and Ulfie played each other).

i think that each incident everyone brought up that the guy getting beat down deserved something. but the players like bertuzzi, domi, and simon went about it wrong. cause you dont want to hurt the guy or wreck his career..you wanna send a message and if the guy wont fight then there are safer ways to beat the guys ass and send the message without severely hurting them. you have to give them a chance to be able to cover up like mcgrattan and hordichuk did to avery you cant sucker a guy or tackle him from behindReply

But that's the problem with a snake in the grass like Ulfie Samuelsson... the "safer ways to beat his ass" just don't work with him. A sneak attack was the only way to truly get him and deliver payback.Reply

I remember watching a compilation of Bruins fights and Samuelsson got sucker punched by Jay Miller when Ulf was playing for the Hartford Whalers. The play was at the other end of the ice and the refs were slow to pick up that there was a problem. Samuelsson was on the ice for a few seconds and Jay was standing over him. Ulf got up and Miller nailed him with a second sucker shot and knocked him down. This time the refs responded.

This was one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen. I haven't come across footage of this incident on YouTube or in the DYG archives. Bruins fans will always hate Samuelsson for virtually ending Cam Neely's Hall of Fame career.

I remember Odjick's nickname being the 'Algonquin Assassin', and Domi's being the 'Alabanian Aggressor'.Reply

This is one of Tie Domi's career highlights and one of the greatest moments in professional sports. This was the most-deserved suckerpunch of all time.
Well said Chris! I'm sure Cam Neely would agree.
