oldtimegoodtime Sep 17, 2008 08:24 ET | These 3 got majors. 9 other players received game misconducts. | Reply |
whlfan Oct 23, 2008 05:11 ET | According to The Albertan:
It was billed as a Western Canada Hockey League game with Brandon Wheat Kings and Calgary Centennials. But just after 10 p.m. it was more like a jungle. Gangland brawls had nothing on this. Tow pier-sixers erupted midway through the third period in the contest (?) when Centennials were cruising along with a 7-1 cushion. Before order was restored everybody with a jersey on his back, including many without, had taken part in the ice-level proceedings. And, at the 11:15 mark, referee Joe Cassidy threw his hands up, handed out game misconducts to everybody and called the game. WCHL president Ron Butlin said he is withholding the game's outcome pending a meeting today with officials who worked the game.
The first brawl ignited between Brandon's Dale Cook and Bob Nystrom, Centennials' policeman. The Calgary player had the upper hand and a Brandon player rushed to the aid of his comrade and that touched off a chain reaction. Before it was over, the Calgary bench had emptied and when order was restored, 12 players received penalties, including game misconducts to seven Centennials and two Wheat Kings. That all took place at 10:52.
According to the Calgary Herald:
Then at 10:53, complete chaos and pandemonium broke loose. Cents' rugged forward Bob Nystrom was standing in front of the Brandon goal waiting for a pass-out from the corner when Wheaties' defenceman Dale Cook tried to move him from in front of the net. In an instant, Cook and Nystrom had the gloves off and punches were being thrown, mostly by Nystrom who got his opponent on the ice and in the Brandon net. The Calgary forward was then jumped on by Brandon goaltender Gord Kitsul and in a split second, the donnybrook was well on its way. Three or four Brandon players left the players' box and they were immediately followed by all the Centennial players. The Corral ice looked like a sporting goods auction sale with gloves, sticks and bodies strewn all over the Brandon end of the rink. When referee Joe Cassidy finally restored some semblance of law and order, Nystrom and Cook received fighting major penalties (five minutes each) and Cook was tabbed with an extra 10 minute misconduct. Kitsul, who came in to replace starter Rick McDonald, was tabbed with a major. But the complete farce of the whole dirty mess was the number of game misconducts handed out. Brandon lost goaltender MacDonald and defenceman Glen Agar while Centennials sent to the dressing room were Ed Dyck, goaltender who raced the length of the ice to come to Nystrom's aid, defenceman Jim McMasters, Len Frig as well as captain Brian Walker, John Sinkpiel, Oliver Stewart and Ron Homenuke. | Reply |

oldtimegoodtime Sep 17, 2008 08:25 ET | No majors handed out but 25 players were ejected and the game didn't resume. | Reply |
whlfan Oct 23, 2008 05:09 ET | According to The Albertan:
Twenty two seconds later, with three Centennials on the bench, it was Brandon's turn to empty the bench. The three Cents followed quickly. I started getting poked when I had the puck along the boards. I don't know by who, Centennials' rookie Alex Kogler, one of the original combatants in the second brawl, stated. Both coaches, naturally, have their sides of the tale. Brandon's Gerry Brasson maintains all the Centennials should have been ejected after the first fight. Only one guy left our bench, he said. I looked over at theirs and there were no players. Scotty Munro, Centennial manager-coach, said. They (Brandon) sent the original guys out, four of them, so my guys followed suit. Munro maintains that the second brawl was premeditated. We had lost seven guys and they had lost only two, so they had five on us, and most of their extra scrappers went after Nystrom. Four were on him at one time. The game, itself, saw something like 115 penalties called, and although the official results should be compiled sometime today, it probably rates as a world record. And, somewhere lost in the shuffle was the original delayed penalty against Brandon before Nystrom and Cook lit the fuse.
According to the Calgary Herald:
After the game resumed, a full 15 seconds had elapsed when the fights started again. With Centennials only having 13 players left, Larry Krulish and Alex Kogler started the fisticuffs that brought the remaining players into the act. Kogler was trying to work the puck free along the boards when Krulish clamped a stick check on him and threw him to the ice. Referee Cassidy had his hand raised for a delayed penalty, but that was the sign for the second free-for-all to start While Kogler was lying on the ice, Nystrom hurdled the penalty box to assist him and had to take on four Brandon players the second time around. Cassidy had no alternative but to call the game and with referee-in-chief Bill Quilley and league president Jim Butlin observing proceedings from the press box, the WCHL president stated that he would hold up any decision on the outcome of the game pending a meeting with officials of the game Tuesday.
And the fallout....
CALGARY (CP) - Two Western Canada Hockey League coaches were suspended Wednesday and 30 players were issued fines totaling $380 following a penalty-halted game between Calgary Centennials and Brandon Wheat Kings Monday night. Ron Butlin, president of the WCHL, made the ruling Wednesday and said the game played in Calgary will stand as a 7-1 win for the Centennials. The contest erupted into fights twice in the third period with players form both benches joining the fracas. Thirty-four players received game misconducts and 55 penalties were called by referee Joe Cassidy, who stopped the game at 11:15 of the third period. Calgary was leading 7-1 at the time. Scotty Munro, coach of the Centennials, was suspended for the next four league games - two at home and two away - while Gerry Brisson, Brandon's coach, was handed a two-game suspension which includes Saturday's home game against Edmonton. Munro received the more severe penalty because of previous incidents this year involving the Calgary team, Butlin said in a news release. Bob Nystrom of Calgary and Dale Cook of Brandon were fined $50 each for leaving the penalty box and joining fights. Butlin also levied fines of $10 each to 14 Calgary and Brandon players who took part in the fights. The president said that from here on in any coach sending his team on the ice to enter into fights already taking place will receive an automatic eight-game suspension. I propose to clean up this situation. And from here on there will be a tough area of discipline on coaches and managers, who I feel bring about these problems and must bear the primary responsibility. | Reply |
