They went just as they stepped out of the penaltybox. Mostly some toe-to-toe in the beginning, Thornton getting slightly the better of Kruse. Kruse also had a bloody nose afterwards.

Sandy McCarthy narrow win Fun

Standing 8 feet apart for a neutral zone faceoff, these two start chatting and when the puck drops, so do the gloves. After a long squareoff to allow for removal of unwanted equipment, McCarthy throws some big rights early, missing a few but connecting with some decent punches. His eighth punch is a wicked uppercut that lands well. McCarthy backs up Bonvie but both are throwing and Bonvie lands a good uppercut, takes a sharp right cross and lands another uppercut before they start throwing shorter punches at close quarters near the end of the scrap. Bonvie stands up for himself well but McCarthy lands more, especially early, and gets the edge in a very good fight.

McCarthy and Bonvie line up next to each other at the face off and as the puck hits the ice, they square off. Both get their arms free from an elbow pads and then grab on. McCarthy dominates the early chapters of the fight. He connects with about five big overhand rights while Bonvie responds with only a couple of helmet punches. McCarthy continues firing and catches Bonvie with a huge uppercut. Dennis stays on his feet and after receiving a couple of blows to the back of the helmet starts coming back as they go back and forth. The contest is very even at this point, both connect with about six solid shots. They tire out then and get in close quarters. Sandy lands a couple of rabbit punches to the bucket, takes it off and adds a couple more noogies. Bonvie counters with two good in-tight lefts, they wrap their arms around each other and let the linesmen to come in. Bonvie skates away with a big smile on his face.

Very entertaining battle. McCarthy definitely landed much more punches and clearly won it but Bonvie did pretty well against a current heavyweight champion.

The Sandman and Dennis the Menace were two of the most exciting battlers of the era. This was another outstanding tilt. McCarthy landed a pretty good shot and a solid blow. He missed a punch and landed a solid right. Bonvie landed a partial connect, missed a punch, and landed a solid blow.

Sandy landed an average punch and a solid blow. He missed a shot and landed a good punch. Dennis landed a solid blow, missed a punch, and landed a solid shot. He landed two average connects. McCarthy missed a punch and landed a solid blow. He missed a shot and landed a decent punch.

The Sandman landed a solid blow, an average punch, a solid connect, and a pretty good shot. Bonvie landed a solid blow and missed a punch. He landed a decent connect and a solid shot. McCarthy missed a punch and landed an average shot.

Sandy landed a solid blow and a decent connect. Dennis missed a punch, landed a body shot, and missed a punch. McCarthy landed two decent punches and missed a shot. Bonvie landed a decent right and an average left. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for McCarthy. Bonvie landed a number of effective punches and I thought he was reasonably competitive in the fight.

Dennis Bonvie and Sandy McCarthy line up for a faceoff late in a blowout game and they drop the gloves as soon as the puck drops. Both guys get rid of the elbow pads as they square up and McCarthy wades in tentatively before they each manage to get a grip on the other's sweater. McCarthy lands two long overhand rights and as Bonvie leans away and misses a long right of his own. McCarthy connects with a right weakly but then lands two of three rights to the side of the head when Bonvie adjusts his grip. Bonvie lands an overhand right to the helmet and McCarthy lands a right to the helmet but then connects with a good right from underneath. McCarthy throws two rights and lands one as Bonvie leans away but then Bonvie lands a good right to the face as McCarthy misses a right. McCarthy misses a short right and after Bonvie misses an overhand right, McCarthy connects on a right over the top while Bonvie lands a right underneath. Bonvie misses a right from underneath and McCarthy lands a right to the helmet. Bonvie connects with a long right to the helmet but McCarthy lands a good right to the head although Bonvie counters with a good landing right from underneath. McCarthy then lands an overhand right as Bonvie misses an overhand right of his own and McCarthy misses a right afterwards. Bonvie misses a right and McCarthy connects on a right to the helmet before moving into close quarters on Bonvie. Bonvie misses a right and McCarthy lands a right before connecting on a right while Bonvie misses a right. Bonvie lands a short right as they wrestle and McCarthy lands a short right as well. McCarthy then removes Bonvie's helmet and connects with two rights to the head. Bonvie lands a right, changes hands, and lands a left while McCarthy changes hands. McCarthy misses a left and then gets a hand into Bonvie's face as they keep wrestling. The linesmen wade in and break up the fight as Bonvie says something to McCarthy. A really entertaining tilt between two tough heavyweights. Bonvie stood in there pretty well but McCarthy definitely got the best of this scrap. Lots of punches thrown, the majority of which, landed from both guys. Both guys landed some big punches but McCarthy had a lot of other connect clean, considerably more so than Bonvie.

Very good fight, McCarthy hammers away early but Bonvie makes a strong comeback as they both trade bombs, close fight but McCarthy landed just a bit more and with more power to get the win.

"Current league champion", I dig it. 1995-96 was a year where you could make a strong case for more than one guy to be league champ. McCarthy was definitely one of them, and you can also consider Twist and Simon. Domi, Grimson, and Probert were up there, too, but weren't quite as dominant as those three guys were that season.Reply

Yes I know. I would say that Twist and McCarthy were the best in 1995-1996, Simon was close too (Twist would be a clear champion if not his last two fights, that's for sure). But in the period from 1993-1994 to 1995-1996 McCarthy was the champion IMO.Reply

In 95-96 it was:

1. Twist
2. McCarthy
3. Simon

Those are the top 3 that year, it was close between McCarthy and Simon though.
