Georges Laraque plays his first game as a Montreal Canadien and jumps right into the fighting aspect of the tilt with Shawn Thornton. Laraque was added in order to provide toughness to the Canadiens who badly needed it after last season's thrashing at the hands of the Flyers. They also now have a Heavyweight who can step in and protect their star European players in ways not possible last season. Shawn Thornton is very small for a guy who frequently fights the best-of-the-best, but that does not stop him from the challenge or occasionally pulling an upset victory over the bigger fighters.

They meet up early on near the Canadiens bench and Thornton throttles BGL to the ice with a powerful takedown. That is impressive in itself considering the size disparity. Thornton respectfully allows Laraque back up without throwing a cheap punch and the two begin to trade. Thornton goes with a right jab that misses, and Laraque lands a left jab. Thornton then fires two huge rights that connect to the jaw of Laraque and Georges is able to also land a big punch. Laraque throws a couple of lefts and the first one catches Thornton, also on the jaw. The second one misses and Thornton is able to land a counter right to the side of the head. Thornton ducks down and Laraque is able to remove his helmet. Thornton recovers and fires a quick right cross, but it just misses. Laraque is then able to land a decent left to Thornton's head and begins to switch into wrestle mode. Laraque gets close to Thornton and puts a big hold on him with the right and proceeds to throw eight consecutive lefts to the back of Thornton's head. The first four miss, but the next four land. None of these punches are very strong, and do little to harm Thornton. Laraque continues his powerful hold of Thornton and attempts to wrestle him over the Canadiens bench. Laraque throws four more weak lefts and gets two of them to connect. Thornton finally answers with a left, but it falls short of the target and the linesmen intervene.

Not a great fight, but about as entertaining as it gets for Laraque in today's league. The crowd in Montreal loved it and responded well to what Laraque brought to them. Thornton did a fine job of not allowing Laraque to land a haymaker and kept it very close. Thornton actually landed the two best punches of this one. Laraque managed to get a good one in also, but was far too reluctant to stand back and throw "real" punches for some reason. Laraque landed more, but Thornton better in a Draw. Once again, a lot of different calls being made in a fight involving Laraque. I guess he is either loved or hated nowadays. In any case, a great result for Thornton and a rusty beginning for BGL.

Georges Laraque narrow win Fun

The Montreal Canadiens are celebrating their hundredth National Hockey League season during their first home game at the Bell Centre, taking on the rival Boston Bruins and just a couple minutes into the game, the Canadiens' newly acquired enforcer, Georges Laraque fights Bruins' tough guy, Shawn Thornton. Some words were exchanged between the two before the game and so right when they come together on their first shift, the gloves drop and they grab on. They wrestle right away Laraque throws four lefts, landing two before being tackled into the boards by Thornton. Thornton keeps Laraque down temporarily but Laraque manages to work his way back to his feet. They both start throwing, Thornton lands two of three rights as Laraque lands all four of his lefts before taking off Thornton's helmets as Thornton ducks. Laraque then misses two lefts before Thornton counters with a connecting right to the face. However Laraque throws ten lefts in a row afterwards, landing six as Thornton just gets in tight and becomes inactive. Laraque wrestles Thornton onto the bench boards as Thornton tries to get Laraque's helmet off but it remains on. Laraque then throws four lefts and connects on three while getting Thornton bent over boards. Thornton comes back with a missing left and Laraque throws two lefts, landing one as the linesmen step in and break it up. The two heavyweights go to the penalty boxes with the Montreal fans cheering loudly. Not a great fight but it definitely wasn't a bad one. Thornton stood in there well with the considerably larger Laraque but Laraque was quite more active and took control late. Although Thornton landed better, Laraque landed plenty more and gets the narrow win in my book.

Georges Laraque VS Shawn Thornton October 15th / 2008

This is the very first fight for Georges Laraque as a Montreal Canadien.

These two heavyweights Georges Laraque and Shawn Thornton drop the gloves in behind the play, Thornton immediately throws Laraque to the ice and the fight looks like it is over.

Give Thornton credit here though because he lets Laraque back up to the ice to continue the fight.

As Laraque gets back up, Laraque starts firing some short left hands at Shawn Thornton who answers back with some rights of his own. Thornton then stops firing as Georges Laraque continues to fire some short left hands. They wrestle around a bit and then they go up along the bench. Laraque looks like he is almost about to put Thornton into the bench but doesn't. As both men lean over the bench Laraque is firing some more left hands at the back of the head of Thornton, Thornton answers back with a couple of short right hands to the face of Laraque.

This fight is too hard to call either way. Laraque may have threw more, but Thornton got the takedown early and the fight could have been over if Laraque had never had gotten back up.

Final Decision,

Draw.

This was a pretty good scrap. The replay showed the start of the contest. Laraque landed a solid blow, missed a punch, and landed an average connect. Thornton rag-dolled BGL to the ice. Georges got up and continued. He landed a decent blow and two solid shots. He landed an average left.

Thornton fell behind early, but landed some effective blows once he got going. He landed two solid shots and missed two rights. Laraque missed a punch and landed an average blow. He missed a shot and landed a decent connect. He missed a few punches. He landed a partial connect, missed a blow, and landed a few light punches. Thornton landed an average left. The refs stopped the bout.

I rate this as a narrow win for Laraque. He got off to a good start. Thornton came back some, but he fell short of earning the draw.

These two have dropped the gloves near the Montreal bench, they grab onto each other straight away. Thornton executes a lovely hip throw that puts the Rock on his back in close to the boards, one lino skates over and thinks about splitting them up but Laraque gets back to his skates and the fight is on.

Laraque lands three short fast lefts to the side of Thornton's head and Thornton lands a right hand as well, Thornton helmet come of at this stage. Laraque then throws seven punches to the back of Thornton's head about four land, they are now leaning over the Montreal bench, Laraque throws another four punches but only one lands to the back of Thornton's head. Thornton then lands the best punch of the fight so far, a crisp left hand that lands square on Laraque's face knocking his helmet into the Montreal bench. Laraque lands a few more taps to the back of Thornton's head before the lino's come in and separate them

This was a spirited scrap with Thornton landing the two best punches and a good hip throw at the start, but thats all he done in the fight. I think this is a narrow win Laraque as he lands more and looked to be much more in control of the fight, using his strength to back Thornton up over the bench landing punches while Thornton was just holding on. So i think this was a win to Laraque.

Narrow win Laraque.

Big Georges Laraque's first fight as a Montreal Canadiens comes on his first shift with his new team and is against Bruins' long time policemen and a never-back-down-for-anybody enforcer type Shawn Thornton. The fight is at the Bell Center and everybody was expecting this. They drop the gloves without hesitation and, right away, Thornton wrestles Laraque to the ice and succeeds to ragdoll him to the ice. But they get back up and the fight continues. They both start throwing, Laraque with the left Thornton with the right (a bit of toe-to-toe action here but for a small amount of time). They then hug and Laraque throws a lot of unanswered lefts over the top that land. They then lean over the boards on the Habs bench and Laraque keeps swinging while Thornton answers with only one right after they are leaning on the Habs' bench. After a while they kind of stop being so active and the refs break up the fight. Fight over. This is a narrow win or clean win for Laraque because he threw way more punches (23 versus 6) and in my opinion a lot of them landed very hard on the head of Thornton. I give it a 6 because it was a great fight too.

From the heated words before the game, you knew this fight was a lock to happen. Both guys come off the ice and Thornton goes right to Laraque. The camera gets there to when Thornton slams Laraque to the ice. They get up and start trading punches both landing. They slow down a bit and get hunched over the bench, where Laraques throws soft blows to the back of Thornton's head. On first view i don't see a winner but good tilt.

*Edit

On 2nd view narrow win Thornton. During the tradeoff Thornton lands some big rights that connects flesh to Laraque's face. Most of Laraques shots aside from the tradeoff were pillow punches. The ones he threw at the end were weak and i don't think its enough to call a win in his favor or draw. Narrow Win Thornton.

I love seeing Laraque in the Candaiens dress. that was a good fight for him. they went a little bit rough at the boards, so laraque and thornton decide to go for it. after only 2 minutes and a bit. They drop the gloves and first fall down. The referees wanted to go in and separate them but they quickly stand up and banged some punches in. After a bit Laraque got overhand in this one and had 3 good lefts while Thornton wanted grabbing him. he landed them and backside of thorntons head. Then Laraque trys to take him over in to the Candiens bench. they lean over and nearly fall off the ice, while Laraque still was beating him. Then the refs finally got between them. I give this a narrow win to Big Georges the gorgeous.

Saw alot of noogies from BGL. Definitely not a win for either, I can see how someone would give either a slight edge. I like how the announcer mentions the "takedown." A big-time fighter shouldn't be doing "takedowns."

Thornton is able to wrestle Laraque to the ice to begin this fight which is pretty hard to do, they both get up firing punches Laraque with the lefts and Thornton with the rights, I don't know why Thornton stopped punching but Laraque was still eager to go with Thornton pretty much locking out George. Everyone knew this would happen and its too close to call it for anyone.

Laraque was still throwing punches at Thorton when Thorton was half way in the bench. After that Laraque lets go of Thorton and the fight ended. It was a great fight many punches where thrown and a lot of action was in this fight.I thought it was a awesome fight and it was very good to watch to.

Short flurry at the beggining with both guys gettin a couple shots. Thornton then turns his head and plays defense the rest of the fight while Laraque threw like 10 lefts to the back of his head.

No way a win for Thornton, he landed 1 or 2 at the start then turned away the rest of the way. Smart fight? maybe but he definatly lost this one, he totally bailed.

They drop the gloves and they both fall down with Thornton on top, Laraque gets to his feet and lands two or three real good lefts and Thornton gets inside and ties him up for the most part. They both keep throwing but seem to miss or hit the back of the helmet if anything. They get over along the bench and Laraque has Thornton leaned over it while throwing some wild punches that didn't seem to land, Thornton looks to sneak in a Left as the Refs were going in to separate them and Laraque throws a couple more that don't seem to hit anything.

Both fighters throwing several punches early, slight edge to Thornton here, Laraque shows his strength late by muscling Thornton along the boards. After the initial flurry of punches, Thornton looked like he landed one while leaning over the boards, Laraque messed up Thornton's hair 6 or 7 times at that point as well, no power on these taps to the back of the head at all. If anything, maybe slight edge to Thornton, but too close to call either way, draw.

As the camera gets there, Thornton slams Laraque onto the ice hard along the boards. Laraque gets up and they have a very brief toe to toe exchange, three punches each. Thornton throws another right and they get in close as Laraque muscles Thornton halfway into the bench and throws a flurry of left noogies at the back of his head for little damage. In my estimation those rather harmless shots by Laraque shouldn't win a fight for anybody and I didn't see any real clear cut advantage for either fighter when actual punches were exchanged so I think this is a draw.

The camera angles favours Georges Laraque as you can only see shots landing on the back of Thornton's head, it is hard to see if Thornton is landing anything. They meet along the boards and an early few thrown by Thornton as he tackles Laraque that doesn't phase Laraque as he quickley gets up and regains his energy and begins throwing shots to the back of Thornton's head, I believe Thornton may have been landing in tight though, they then wear out and the fight is broken up.

From the camera's faraway view, it starts when they meet up by the boards and fall down to the ice. Camera zooms in and they get up and trade swings at a even clip within a short interval of time but it's hard to tell if anything facially-lands or just marginally lands here. Then Thornton headlocks Laraque but Laraque connects on 10 unanswered headpunches. The fight ends just after this with Thornton only trying to bend Laraque over the boards and that's when the refs intercede. Clear win for Laraque and it would be ridiculous to say that this fight was a win for Thornton or even a draw.
