Scrappy power forward Owen Nolan takes on the veteran enforcer Todd Ewen in the first battle of what we wind up being five bouts in this game. Ewen gets Nolan's helmet off right away while throwing three rights, landing two. Nolan counters with a landing right however he almost gets tripped up by a stick. Ewen lands a left but Nolan slips out of his sweater. They grapple around, then Nolan misses two rights. Ewen misses a right and Nolan comes back with a landing right. They grapple some more and then Nolan misses a right. Ewen then throws five rights and connects with two as Nolan gets his arm completely out of his sweater. Ewen gets in close and after Nolan lands a right, they stand back. Nolan loses his elbow pad and throws two rights, landing one. Ewen misses a left while Nolan misses a right and then Nolan gets back in close as Ewen misses two lefts. They wrestle and the linesmen come in to break it up as Nolan misses a right. A pretty good and fairly even scrap. Good fight for Nolan against Ewen, earning a draw with the bigger and more experienced fighter.

A very intriguing matchup. Ewen, the resident Ducks heavy bumps Nolan along the boards who gets back at him. Surprisingly Nolan instigates this one and it is a decent go.

When the camera gets there, Nolan is already without a helmet and Ewen throws a couple of short punches, missing mostly. Nolan counters with a solid right, but I am not sure he hit Ewen with it. Then they wrestle and Nolan jersey comes halfway off. Nolan comes up with two wild rights, missing and landing one on the helmet before throwing one more shot to the helmet. Ewen desperately wants to answer but misses his opportunity three times. Nolan then taps Ewen's helmet after Ewen went for the takedown. Nolan then gets free, unloads with two wild rights but I don't think he landed anything clean, just a glancing blow with his 2nd punch at best. Ewen answers right back with a left that landed on the head of Nolan. They wrestle a bit, Nolan attempting with one shot right before the refs intervene.

This was a decent battle, unfortunately not much lands cleanly. Ewen had some trouble with Nolan when the jersey of the Sharks forward comes halfway off. Nolan threw a bit more, but they landed probably the same. This was a really good showing from Nolan against a legit HW. Ewen adjusted pretty well, countering Nolan's punches until the end. Ewen probably landed the best punch while Nolan landed more. I would say the draw is a pretty correct call.

Solid, hard-fought battle.

Narrow win for nolan but you also have to respect nolan here for 3 reasons: he fought a guy taller & heavier than him; nolan is a power forward who both scores & fights a person who only has a "designated fighter" status; and because he out-punched ewen.

Pretty even fight, in the end Nolan lands a good right, but Ewen comes back and lands a good left. I think they landed pretty much the same amount, have to call it a draw, good showing by Nolan.

Odgers bullies Kariya after the faceoff and Ladouceur comes in to the rescue. As he launches at Odgers, he quickly falls down with Odgers on top. Jeff threw a few on the way down but it was not really effective. The refs then jump in.

It was over before it started. They had no chance to settle anything as they pretty much fell down right away.

Teemu Selanne starts going behind the net with the puck while Jeff Friesen is coming down from the slot area. Selanne skirts around Friesen so Friesen sticks his arm out and gets Selanne right in the head with a forearm. Selanne's helmet is knocked off and he pauses for a moment before continuing with the puck. Dirty hit by Friesen. Emotion

Todd Ewen clear win Fun

The main event. Both these guys had one altercation each, Ewen being in a fight and Odgers in a minor scuffle. Ewen has to be the more tired fighter but it doesn't show here.

Ewen and Odgers decide to let the rights go so this is a non-stop action fight. Ewen gets the better of Odgers, landing multiple shots on the face before the Sharks enforcer shows some signs of damage. At the midway point he gets tagged with a right and goes to his knees (Ewen gets him good with an uppercut while he is down). Odgers gamely stands back, but Ewen doesn't let up and scores with some more. Eventually he decides to end it and muscles Odgers down. The refs then separate.

This was a dandy, an underrated scrap. Odgers was clearly outstruck here and was badly outpointed by Ewen. Ewen landed atleast a half dozen of good shots on the face and a couple of more on the helmet, while Odgers seems to miss or come up short. He might landed a few at the beginning but Ewen takes over and systematically breaks Odgers down. I am surprised Odgers ended up relatively fine after the scrap. It was a tough fight for him for sure.

Ewen gets the clear victory, Odgers loses badly. Still, give him mad props: he stood it and took it like a man. That's why you got an illusion he went punch for punch with Ewen: in reality he got lit up.

He sported a nice shiner under his eye in the next game against the Montreal.

These two meet up in the Ducks zone and drop the mitts. Ewen looks attempts the first punch, but looks to miss. Ewen then gets in a good right, then he gets tied up. Odgers then gets his right free and starts throwing. He misses his first right, but then catches Ewen with a couple stingers. Ewen pushes Odgers up against the glass, and they start going toe to toe with rights. Ewen gets in about seven good rights, a couple looking to sting Odgers as Odgers missed almost all of his punches. Ewen then gets Odgers with a great uppercut which buckles Odgers. Odgers gets back up and fires a right that misses, and Ewen catches him with a couple. Odgers attempts a left which misses, and they each miss some more rights. Ewen pushes Odgers back over to the boards, and then wrestles him down.

Todd Ewen and Jeff Odgers, the resident enforcer from each of their respective clubs decide to drop the gloves after meeting up along the boards. They grab on with the left hand and are fast to go toe-to-toe. Ewen throws fifteen rights, landing eight while Odgers throws thirteen rights, landing five, Ewen also landing better in the trading on the smaller Odgers. Odgers goes to his knees and Ewen tries wrestling Odgers down but he stays up. Odgers misses a right then switches hands. Ewen throws four rights and lands three as Odgers misses a left. Then Ewen rushes Odgers into the boards and wrestles him to the ice, finishing it there. Very good fight from two these two heavyweights. Odgers stood in there and traded with Ewen but Ewen definitely had the better of punching in this fight.

This was a good fight. Odgers landed an average blow, missed a punch, and landed a solid shot. Ewen landed an average blow, landed a solid shot, and missed a punch. Jeff missed a punch, landed an average blow, and missed six consecutive blows. These punches just missed by inches. He landed a decent shot.

Ewen was the more accurate and powerful puncher. He landed two average blows and seven solid connects. He missed a punch. Odgers landed a decent right and a decent left. Todd landed two average blows and missed a couple of shots. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a clear win for Ewen. He landed with more accuracy and power.

Donovan gets his first official FM in this altercation (he had a fight with Laperriere the season before). This is after the Odgers-Ewen slugfest, but you won't expect anything like that again from these two.

Still, this is a decent go with actual emotion involved in it. Karpa gets Donovan with a right and the Sharks player looks desperate to tie up Karpa. Karpa misses over the helmet and Donovan attempts a lame left hook. Karpa punches Donovan helmet off and lands a right on the head and he also throws some left noogies, missing mostly before he wrestles Donovan down.

Not a bad fight at all, unfortunately it was over quickly. Karpa landed some shots on Donovan, who practically didn't really mount any offense in this one. Still, give a guy some props, Karpa was a tough, psychical defensemen who was more experienced at this.

He comes out of it without injury or humiliation. Still he loses this fight handily.

Not much of a fight as Shean Donovan and Dave Karpa mix it up in the corner. The gloves come off and they go in tight. Karpa connects on a couple of rights. Donovan then misses a couple of lefts. Karpa lands a couple rights as he wrestles with Donovan. Then Karpa changes hands and misses a couple lefts. Karpa then wrestles Donovan down, ending the fight. Boring fight where Karpa was the only one who connected.

Actually Olausson is the one who pushes Baker to the net. Naz takes exception and Ladouceur follows his lead. The two of them gets involved, Ladouceur facewashing Nazarov, who tries to gouge the eye of the Anaheim veteran. Randy finally loses his gloves and the fight is on.

This is a long fight but Ladouceur wants no part of the Russian bear. He throws the first few, landing one on the helmet before Nazarov throws one on the side of Ladouceur's head. From this point, Ladouceur is stuck like a glue on Nazarov who throws several ineffective punches at Ladouceur. Finally the refs move in and stop this altercation.

Another boring fight, Ladouceur just wanted to hug here. Nazarov controlled the fight, threw more and landed more as well. His punches were pretty weak though so no damage done here. Still, he wins this because of Ladouceur's inactivity.

This was his final fight as well.

Ladouceur shoves Sharks Jamie Baker into the Ducks net, and Nazarov gets involved. Ladouceur gets in tight as Naz tries to pry off the helmet. Mostly hugging. Ladouceur has Naz locked up so that despite the long reach, Naz's punches barely land. Both resort to using short chops with the side of the fist. Naz with narrow win becuase he was throwing more.

Fourth fight of game, and it is Andrei Nazarov and Randy Ladouceur having a pretty uneventful, dull, fight after the whistle. They start going even though a linesman has his arms in between them. Ladouceur misses three rights and the linesman retreats. Nazarov then throws three rights, landing one, and knocking off Ladouceur's helmet. Ladouceur just hangs on. Nazarov then throws six rights and lands one. Ladouceur misses a right then falls down. Nazarov pulls Ladouceur back to his feet and Nazarov throws four rights and lands one. The linesmen come in and break it up but Nazarov misses one right before stopping. Bad fight. Win to Nazarov for landing a bit, Ladouceur never landed.

Todd Ewen is checked by Jim Kyte and then falls down. Kyte and Ewen battle for a loose puck and when Ewen gets up, they choose to drop the gloves. It's Ewen's third fight on the night and his third different opponent from the San Jose Sharks. They each get a hold of each others' jerseys with the left and start trading heavy rights. Ewen throws four and lands one that connects hard, however Kyte does much better, throwing twelve and lands five, two connecting hard. Ewen gets in close quarters on Kyte who switches hands. They wrestle for a while and then they manage to work some distance between themselves. Kyte misses a left, Ewen lands a right and then Kyte switches hands as Ewen throws two rights and lands one. Then Kyte throws six rights and lands one as Ewen misses a right and then gets back in close quarters. Ewen grabs Kyte's leg and forces him off balance although Kyte falls right on top of Ewen. Kyte lands a right as the linesmen come in and break it up. Three fights for Ewen in this game; a fairly good and close fight with Owen Nolan, a nice win over Jeff Odgers in an toe-to-toe fight, but then a clear loss to Kyte in a good tussle here.

Kyte and Ewen traded blows and Jim was able to get a lot more shots off. Kyte landed a solid connect and two average right hands. Todd missed a couple of punches and landed a solid right. Jim missed a punch and landed a couple of average connects. He missed a blow, landed three average shots, and landed a solid connect.

Ewen landed a partial connect and missed a punch. He landed an average blow and missed a shot. Kyte missed a punch, landed a decent left, and landed a decent right. He missed a punch, landed a decent connect, and missed a shot. The refs stopped the contest.

I rate this as a clear win for Kyte. He had a sizeable edge in punches landed. Ewen landed a few effective blows, but he was a little listless at times in the bout. Jim outworked him and had a clearcut edge.

3rd and final fight for Ewen, his 2nd against Kyte this season. The two battle near the corner where Ewen launches at Kyte. This turned out to be a mistake.

Kyte easily gets Ewen off-balance, but not sure because of a punch. He peppers Ewen with short rights, going under occasionally. Ewen might grazed Kyte a bit but has zero effect on the Sharks defensemen. They wrestle a bit, Ewen trying something going but not sure he landed anything before Kyte takes over, throwing some on the body. Ewen then goes for the leg takedown but ends up mounted on the bottom. Kyte decides to throw one before the refs separate.

I don't understand all the 7 ratings, I thought it was an average fight. Kyte might get Ewen at the beginning but I am not really sure. Ewen ends up in a bad spot and Kyte takes advantage of it, landing some short punches. Ewen tries to answer, but can't really land anything before Kyte took over. Ewen, probably out of frustration (or because he was tired) goes for the takedown but gets the worst of it.

Kyte wins this, but I thought he didn't land any damaging blows. After a few more views I decided to give him the clear win, although his punches didn't look powerful. Still, he was able to control Ewen and ended up in a better position. Ewen was checking the back of his head after the scrap and I think he was probably cut as well (not sure though).

Kyte and Ewen square off as the announcers are quick to point out that this will be the end of Ewen's night as it's his third fight of the evening, based off the end result he should have stopped at two. Kyte pretty much owned this one from start to finish, as he did a nice job of landing with his right while keeping Ewen at bay by holding his fire off with his left (something he had failed to do in a previous fight many years prior to it - with some guy named Kocur, I think - hard lesson learned until Ray taught it to him again). Ewen's attempts at breaking free and landing a big shot were consistently nullified by Kyte, and he was big and strong enough to keep Ewen from manhandling him the way Ewen was capable of, especially when he was trying to turn a fight into his favor. Kyte then lands some more rights and scores a nice takedown on Ewen, landing squarely on top of him and forcing the linesmen to intervene before he could land anymore punches on Ewen while he down.
