Dave Brown clear win Fun
6
Todd Ewen moves to set up a screen in front of the San Jose net, but veteran heavyweight Dave Brown will have none of that. Brown pursues Ewen and gets the lumber up on him. Ewen also gets his stick up. Brown swiftly ejects his gloves and attacks, swinging with lefts as Todd gets his gloves off just in time to defend himself.

Brown hurls about a half-dozen left hands at Ewen, who ducks away to avoid getting popped directly in the face. Nonetheless, Ewen takes a few good punches from Brown. The Anaheim tough guy grabs Brown and tries to tackle him. This move is unsuccessful, but at least it stopped Brown's salvo of lefts.

Brown and Ewen grapple. The linesmen start to enter the fray, but back off. Ewen and Brown exchange some short punches in close quarters. Ewen tosses a couple short rights and manages to knock off Brown's helmet. They wrestle some more. Ewen powers Brown down to the ice and gets in one decent punch when Dave was down. Brown fires in one last punch up at Ewen from his back. The linesmen then put a stop to the battle.

It wasn't a one-sided beating, but Brown clearly won this fight. Brown's opening onslaught was pretty good; he definitely landed several solid blows. Ewen, on the other hand, landed very little, and the few shots he got in weren't all that effective. Give Todd credit for hanging in there and making an effort, but the clear win belongs to Dave Brown.

Dave Brown narrow win Fun

Only a few minutes into the game, Dave Brown wants a piece of Todd Ewen and goes after him right in front of the net. The mitts come off and after they get a grip of each others' jerseys Brown throws eight lefts, landing seven. Ewen gets himself set while keeping his head down and misses a left. Brown then gets in close and wrestles Ewen down and the linesmen wade in. One of them tries to break up the fight while Brown lands a left. The other linesman starts to come in too but then they both back off and let the fight go on. Brown lands two lefts but Ewen lands two rights back, one knocking Brown's helmet off. They wrestle in close and Brown attempts to get Ewen to the ice but he stays up and down goes Brown. Brown grabs Ewen's leg, still trying to get him down but Ewen remains up and lands two rights as Brown gets up. Brown then loses his balance and falls down with Ewen landing a right while being brought down on top of Brown. Brown lands a left as the linesmen come in and break up the fight. Brown early, Ewen late but Brown had better punches landed and gets the win. Alright fight.

This was a fascinating contest. Brown got off to a real good start. He landed a solid blow and three pretty good lefts. He landed a solid punch and missed a blow. Dave got a bit of a jump on Ewen. Todd was covering up some and trying to survive the early storm.

Ewen landed a partial connect with a left hand and slipped to his knees. Brown landed two solid lefts. The refs tried to step in, but the men continued to go at it. The refs decided to back away and let them continue.

Ewen landed an average right. Brown slipped and fell down. Todd capitalized by landing three solid right hands. Dave landed an average left from flat on his back. The refs stepped in to stop the contest.

I rate this as a narrow win for Brown. Dave built up a sizeable lead early in the fight. Ewen narrowed the gap some with some effective punches late in the fight. I don't think it was enough to earn a draw as Brown landed a few more blows and with better pop.

Dave Brown narrow win Fun

After a long period of inactivity, the aging tough guy Dave Brown finds his dance partner in this game. He bumps at Ewen in front of the Sharks net and starts throwing shots at the Ducks player. The fight is on at that point.

Brown starts hammering Ewen with the lefts, throwing atleast a half dozen punches before Ewen starts to respond. Brown lands some decent punches, including a shot that sends the helmet flying and an uppercut that might connected cleanly on the face. They wrestle around with the linos trying to step in. For the rest of the fight they grapple, Ewen landing the better punches this time around. He landed three punches on the side/back of the head before Brown ends up on the bottom. Ewen nearly drove Brown's head to the ice, fortunately Brown ended up being ok. He attempts to throw a left at Ewen from the bottom but I don't think he landed it. The refs then seperate the two.

Brown jumped Ewen here and because of that he had the early lead. He landed a couple of decent punches on Ewen, who came back at the 2nd half of the scrap. Still, Brown landed better but it wasn't the most honorable win.

Not sure because of this fight, but Ewen had some marks around his left eye.

Brown gets the left hand pumping at the start, he throws about 8 with most of them landing. Ewen only throws one during Brown's flurry and I don't think it landed. They go down, but get back up and linesmen let them continue. Brown lands one left, Ewen lands 2, they wrestle, Ewen lands 2 to the back of Brown's head. Ewen wrestles Brown down. When they're down with Ewen on top Brown lands one more left before linesmen jump in. Brown landed more and better punches, edge Brown.

Browny and Ewen throw the gloves off in front of the Sharks net and have at it. Brown catches Ewen with seven lefts to the side of his head at the start, Ewen fires back with a solid right. Ewen gets Brown off balance and knocks him to his knees,
when they get back up Brown lands a weak left and Ewen grazes the side of Brown's face twice with rights, dislodging Brown's helmet. Ewen pushes Brown off balance again grazes the back of his head with two rights. Finally, Ewen takes Brown down and tags him with his second solid punch of the fight before the refs move in. Brown narrow win...his jackhammer lefts at the start gave him a decided edge...props to Ewen for fighting back but he only managed two really solid punches and several grazing shots.

Not sure how anyone can call this a win for Brown. The camera first captures the fight from far away and Brown is throwing swings. Here, I'll even give Brown the benefit of a doubt such that his swings facially-connected 3 or 4 times. Then, Ewen easily wins the 2nd-half of the match when he connects with 3 facial-punches while Brown sinks to the ground with Ewen on top. The refs then break it up. Ewen finishes up very well, so the cumulative facts spell out "draw" for this fight.

Decent battle, Brown gets a bit of a jump on Ewen and pumps away with his trademark lefts landing a few, Ewen gets his balance and battles back but can only land a few rights to the back of Browns head, clear win for Brown.

primeau25, great work uploading all of these clips. I like your attitude. What I don't like is some of your fight reviews. Brown with a clear win over Ewen in this fight? I don't think so. Not even close. As Brown was known to do, he got the early jump on Ewen and threw the early punches, but when Ewen get his bearings and realized he was in a fight, he came back quite nicely to even up the fight. In fact, with such a good finish, I'd be inclined to give Ewen the narrow win if I had to pick a winner.Reply

I watched the fight again. I agree with you after watching it a little more closely that it wasn't a clear win. Though Brown landed much better punches than Ewen for the most part, Ewen still threw and connected enough for it not to be a domination. When i originially watched the fight, i had Ewen missing Brown with the four punches that he grazed him with. I still have to give Brown the edge for landing much better, but Ewen fought back to make it respectable.

Irbe is far away from the crease when he stops Sacco's attempt. More comes from the other side and makes contact with Sacco. The two of them exchange some slashes to the stick and More grabs Sacco. He throws two punches, landing a glancing shot and missing with one before Sacco does the standing turtle. The refs came in and the fight is over. It seems Sacco then indicates that he wants to fight, but the refs are already between them so nothing happens.

This is an unfair fight where Sacco didn't fight back. He seemed to be willing when the refs were between the two, but didn't seem too bothered that the fight ended that way.

More once again picks on a lesser opponent.

Ken Baumgartner and Dave Brown bump and the gloves drop. They grab onto each other's jerseys with the right and Baumgartner misses a left. Brown responds with a missing left and Baumgartner misses a left. Brown replies with a missing left and then leans away as Baumgartner misses two lefts. Brown goes up against the bench boards but soon gets off them and misses a left. Baumgartner throws two lefts and lands one before Brown misses a left. Baumgartner misses a left and Brown misses a left before Baumgartner lands a left. Brown misses a left and Baumgartner misses a left, then Brown misses a left and falls down pushing Baumgartner into the boards. Brown gets up and keeps Baumgartner against the boards, then lands a left. Baumgartner lands a left and then Brown pushes Baumgartner over the boards and into the bench. Brown has his jersey pulled off by Baumgartner and the linesmen pull Brown away from Baumgartner right away. Edge Baumgartner. They were both throwing but not mostly missed. Baumgartner landed slightly more although he was thrown into the bench by Brown to end the fight.

Brown's 2nd fight in this game. He takes on a familiar foe, his opponent is Ken Baumgartner, who suffered a broken orbital bone at the hands of Brown few years earlier. This is a classic matchup that turns out to be Brown's last NHL fight as well.

The fight itself is pretty ordinary, both guys fighting conservatively, thinking about defense first. For instance Brown never really comes close landing anything at all, coming up short or missing badly. At the early stage Baumgartner didn't fare better, but after he tried to bump Brown to the bench, he landed 3 good lefts on the helmet, the last one being the best punch of the fight. Brown then flips Baumgartner to the player bench and the fight is over.

A pretty short scrap, Baumgartner landed the only blows but I would rather score this one a draw. Brown was game but he was not the dominant force he used to be in his Philly/Edm days. Baumgartner failed to land anything clean but his last helmetshot might hit some part of Brown's face. Still, it's not enough for the win.

After the fight a little bit of melee ensues.

Bomber waited a long time to avenge his broken orbital bone from the last time the two met. Both guys tried to throw big punches but mostly missed. Bomber had the slight advantage during their exchange, he tried to get Brown over the boards in the beginning but he was the one who himself got wrestled over the boards in the end. It was the legends [Brown] last NHL fight.

This wasn't a great fight by any means, but Baumgartner did land some moderately effective blows. Brown missed a few lefts. Ken missed a couple of lefts. He landed an average connect and missed a punch. He missed a blow and landed a decent shot. Dave missed a couple of lefts. Brown pinned Baumgartner over the boards. Ken landed one more average shot as the bout was concluding.

This one wasn't pretty and it was a below-average contest. I rate this as a narrow win for Baumgartner. He landed the better blows in this lackluster affair.

Brown snuck in at least one decent left at the start of the fight before the camera zooms in. Baumgartner fired back and missed but Brown got partially turned around. Baumgartner started firing and Brown answered right back. The two men exchanged blows with Baumgartner getting slightly the better of it, until the end when Brown deposits Baumgartner into the bench.

Draw. Was going to say narrow win Baumgartner for edging Brown in the big exchange, but Brown landed a nice left to start and neither man was very accurate in this fight.

Brown is skating alongside the benches when Baumgartner approaches and gives Brown a bump. The gloves come off immediately. Both players toss some stout left hands. However, it looks that they missed most of what they threw, each only landing a few grazing blows, and nothing of any consequence.

They tie each other up momentarily along the Anaheim bench before Brown muscles Baumgartner over the boards into the bench. Baumgartner tried to pull Brown into the bench with him but only succeeds in pulling off his jersey. Brown is hunched over the boards briefly with his feet dangling, but is able to pull himself back onto the ice.

A linesman quickly gets between Brown and the Anaheim bench and a few players from each team gather around the scene. Brown and some of the Mighty Ducks exchange words, and Brown is escorted away shortly before the ensuing line brawl.

Neither man did enough to earn a victory in what started out to be a promising tilt. Draw!

Dave Brown's final fight. Of course, it ends in classic fashion with Brownie tossing Bomber into his own bench. The scrap itself though was fairly uneventful and I'd say it was a resounding draw. Not a bad final tilt for one of the greatest enforcers ever. He was well past his prime at this juncture and still scared the majority of the league with his presence.

The original broadcast missed a good portion of the melee, including the Odgers-Baumgartner scrap. Fortunately they showed some glimpses of the action the next week so here is what happened.

After the Brown-Baumgartner scrap, some of the Sharks players (namely Bodger and Odgers) start to stir the pot. The original broadcast then comes to the commercial break and the next clip (shown in the next telecast) starts with Odgers confronting Baumgartner. The two of them scrap but Ewen comes in as a 3rd man. Meanwhile Racine wants in but he is met with a right hand from Ewen. Karpa then restrains Racine and Odgers and Ewen starts to go. The original broadcast then shows Hebert and Irbe grabbing each other, with the company of Jason Marshall and Doug Bodger (most likely Bodger came in as a 3rd man in the Ewen-Odgers scrap and Marshall joined the fracas). The refs then finally restrain the combatants and the brawl is over.

Fun little stuff here, a lot of 2 on 1 action here. Odgers at some point was receiving punches from both Ewen and Baumgartner, multiple guys wanting to step in and at the meantime Brown was held back and ended up on the Sharks bench before everything settled down.

The Sharks-Ducks rivalry was pretty intense this season.

Jeff Odgers narrow win Fun
3
Ken Baumgartner climbs out of the bench after his fight with Dave Brown and skates off. Jeff Odgers targets Baumgartner though and gives him a shove. They grab on after Odgers drops the gloves and Odgers lands a right as Baumgartner misses a left. Baumgartner lowers his head and Odgers throws three follow up rights, landing two and knocking Baumgartner's helmet off. Todd Ewen jumps in then, hauling Odgers to the ice and Baumgartner goes down too. Baumgartner misses a left as Ewen gets up and begins punching at Odgers too. A linesman comes in and grabs Baumgartner who gets out of his jersey and shoulder pads while Odgers gets up. Ewen punches Yves Racine as he comes in and is pulled away by Dave Karpa. Ewen goes back at Odgers, punching him as he goes down. Baumgartner lands a left but is then wrestled down by a linesman. A quick tilt instigated by Odgers. Baumgartner had just fought (and did well) against Brown when Odgers came in wanting a scrap. Baumgartner didn't hesitate to go again but his teammate, Ewen saw the fight and jumped in as Odgers quickly took the upper hand.

Odgers confronts Baumgartner after the scrap and drops his gloves. Bomber already has his gloves off as he is done fighting Brown a few seconds earlier. They both agree to go so the start is fair play.

Odgers starts strong, landing his first right cleanly and throwing three more, forcing Bomber's helmet to fly away. He seems to be in control but Ewen has other plans. He almost immediately tries to intervene and after Odgers' shots he manages to pull Odgers down. The fair fight between Odgers and Bomber is over at this point, but the three combatants continue to scrap in a nasty altercation.

This was a very short fight, Odgers was winning this brief tilt until it become unfair. Still, it's hard to call it a win for him as the fight never really started because of Ewen. It's like a bar fight where some guy throws a few punches and it seems to get the upper hand when everyone piles in, preventing them to finish their battle.

It's a win for Odgers in a fight that ended prematurely.

Baumgartner after his fight with Brown was skating off, Odgers gave him a push, Baumgartner turned around to face Odgers, Odgers dropped his gloves and they started to go. They grab and both throw a punch at the same time, Odgers lands while Baumgartner doesn't. Odgers' punch seems to stun Baumgartner and he stops throwing. Odgers keeps pumping the rights and lands a couple more and Baumgartner's helmet gets knocked off. Todd Ewen sees his teammate in trouble and jumps in. He grabs Odgers from behind and throws him down to the ice. I think this was a clear win for Odgers, it was a quick fight where Odgers landed only punches and seemed to stun Bomber with the first punch. But it was a little cheap to go after him when Baumgartner just had a fight with Brown.

Odgers and Baumgartner were fighting and Ewen was the third-man-in. Racine intercepted one of Todd's blows, but he got hauled away by an Anaheim player. Ewen was free, but Odgers still had Bomber to deal with. Jeff missed a shot. Todd landed a solid blow, missed a punch, and landed a solid shot. Baumgartner landed a decent blow with Odgers on the ice.

I rate this as a decisive win for Ewen. It was an unfair two-on-one situation. Odgers had his hands full with the Bomber before Todd came on the scene.

So Odgers is fighting two guys at the same time as Ewen pulls him down. Ewen throws some short, forearm-type of punches at him, while Baumgartner throws some lefts at Odgers. Odgers is well covered here so he absorbs most of the punishment on the body/equipment. Racine joins in and he is met with a right from Ewen. Odgers gets back up, tries to break free (and accidently punches the linesmen with a backfist!) and is in a bad spot, turning around at the time when Ewen starts to throw some. Ewen lands one on the side of the head and Odgers goes down. He continues to pepper him, landing some short punches at Odgers who is on the ice. In the meantime Baumgartner also throws some at Odgers who is in a hopeless situation. Unfortunately both feeds doesn't show how things ended, but Odgers was mugged here.

This fight is too short to be rated highter, but the nastiness here was high. Ewen threw punches at the downed opponent, then punched him when he wasn't even looking at him. Bomber wasn't well behind, throwing punches from behind and having a hold of Odgers at the time he was facing Ewen. Odgers also struck the linesmen with the backfist, but in his defense he probably thought it was Baumgartner who was behind him. The fight itself was also decent as Odgers was hit with some decent punches, although the action was highly unfair. Odgers ends up being cut near the eyebrow.

You just don't see this kind of intensity anymore.

Odgers was beating Baumgartner so Ewen jumped in, he grabbed Odgers and threw him down. One linesman got in and grabbed Baumgartner. Odgers got back up to continue with Ewen, but Baumgartner who was down still had a hold of Odgers's jersey and Ewen easily pounded Odgers to the ice and continued to pound him on the ice.
