Bob Probert clear win Fun
8
Bob Probert and Brendan Shanahan are together in front of the Detroit net, bumping and jousting. Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood gets involved, so Probert takes a swing at him. Shanahan then takes a swing at Probert, sticking up for his netminder. Probert and Shanahan quickly drop the gloves and grab on, moving behind the net to have it out.

Probert is the aggressor, tossing several right hands and landing most of them on the side of the head and the left ear of Shanahan. Brendan is on the defensive and trying to work himself into a more favorable position. He has a tight grip on Probert's right sleeve and as a result, the punches Probert lands don't connect flush.

Probert keeps his arm pumping and gets in a stiff shot. Shanahan then applies a hug and is in-close with the big Hawk heavyweight, whereupon they toss short punches to the backs of each others' helmets. Shanny then gets some real offense going, throwing several short rights and landing well, leaving a bruise and a knuckleprint on Probert's left cheek. Probert fires back, so Shanahan then goes back on the defensive, trying to control Probert's right arm.

Bob continues to throw right hands as Shanny tries to avoid them. Probert lands a number of consecutive blows, including a right cross to the jaw and a jolting straight right to the face. Shanahan then tries to stave off Probert by pulling the sweater over his head. Despite the shirt getting partially entangled over his head, Probert still tries to toss in the rights. The linesmen see enough and decide to stop it.

Probert and Shanahan are both disheveled and bruised up. They make their way to the penalty boxes amidst the roars of the Detroit fans, who were no doubt cheering on Shanahan and probably also showing their old hero Probert some appreciation.

Shanahan hung in there very gamely and did well against a much tougher opponent, but Probert was in control for nearly the entire fight. Probert also landed much more frequently, enough to gain a clear win. Though Probert won it clearly, Shanahan sure didn't make it easy for him. Brendan Shanahan was one of a rare breed: a goal scorer and playmaker who could hang with the toughest of the tough.

This was a really good battle, and was also noteworthy because it was one of the incidents that made the Red Wings give Joey Kocur a call later in the season.

Probert and Shanahan are mixing it up in front of the net. Osgood gets involved and Probert takes a swipe at him. Shanahan takes exception and the gloves come off. They lock up in the corner and Probert gets Shanahan's jersey over and lands three short rights. Probert then follows landing a body shot then two rights to the side of the head. Probert then bends Shanahan over and lands one. Shanahan throws a blind right and his jersey came half off as Probert now puts the clinch on. They go back and forth with rapid shots to the side and back of the head. Shanahan backs out a bit and Probert throws some rights mostly being blocked. Shanahan then lands two short rights to the back of Probert's head. They then exchange punches Probert with rights, Shanahan with lefts. When they lock up Probert connects on three solid rights. Shanahan then pulls Probert forward, Probert's jersey goes over his head and the linesmen come in.

Edge Probert as Probert landed more then Shanahan. Good job by Shanny to go back and forth with the champ and only take a slight loss.

Bob Probert narrow win Fun

A quarter under two minutes into the game Chicago Blackhawks' enforcer, Bob Probert gets into it with Detroit Red Wings' power forward, Brendan Shanahan. They drop them and begin grappling behind the net. Shanahan's jersey comes up over his head and Probert throws six straight rights, landing three. Shanahan's jersey comes back down but then is pulled completely off by Probert who misses a right. Then Shanahan misses a right and gets in close quarters with Probert who misses a right. Shanahan lands two short rights, Probert lands a short right, then Shanahan lands another right before Probert misses a right. Shanahan misses two more short rights and they pause. Probert lands a right as Shanahan connects on a nice right inside. They keep wrestling but Probert stands back from Shanahan a little bit and throws three rights, landing two. Shanahan throws two rights and lands one as Probert adjusts his helmet. Probert then misses a right while Shanahan lands a left, they set up and then Probert lands a good right as Shanahan barely misses a left. They back in close quarters for a moment but open up and stand back right away, Probert missing a right as Shanahan misses a left. Probert's helmet falls off and he throws two rights, landing one. Probert misses a right after a pause and Shanahan gets Probert's head down, causing the linesmen to step in. Probert misses a right as the linesmen get in and then one restrains Probert from throwing one last right. Probert goes off with a small cut on his left cheek. A good, energetic, tilt between two tough customers. Probert landed more punches and so gets the win but give credit to Shanahan for standing in there with one of the best scrappers in the game.

This was a good action bout. Shanahan was a good fighter and he gave a good account of himself here. Probert landed an average blow and a couple of solid shots. He landed a decent shot and a couple of solid connects.

Brendan missed a punch and landed a decent punch. He missed a punch and missed three punches. He landed a solid blow. Probie missed three punches and landed a partial connect. He landed a partial connect and a couple of solid blows. Shanahan missed a left and landed a couple of average rights. Probert landed a solid blow and a couple of pretty good punches. He missed a couple of final blows.

I rate this as a clear win for Probert. Shanahan landed several effective blows, but Probert landed more power punches. He landed a couple of pretty good ones at the end and widened the margin of victory in my eyes.

Shanahan is very impressive in this fight. He stands in there and takes several big rights from Probert over the course of the fight. He is doing a pretty decent job of staying away from Probert's right early, and was probably winning or was at least even in this fight to the point when he landed a good short right to Probert's face. To then, both fighters had only scored fairly harmless punches, and were throwing mainly rabbit punches as Shanahan stayed in tight. Shanahan, who had a grab under Probert's right to the back of his jersey, seemed to realize Probert was about to get out of the clinch to stand back to fire. Shanahan opens up and lets go of Probert's right to throw a few lefts, hoping to gain a quick advantage as Probert adjusted his helmet. Probert takes full advantage of having his dominant hand free, while Shanahan is throwing comparatively weak lefts. Probert nails Shanahan with several good rights until Shanahan decides he'd better try to get control of Probert's right or get into a clinch again. However, Shanahan never quite gets a good grip nor does he get himself in tight as he had earlier. Probert continues to get a few solid rights through until Shanahan is able to get Probert's jersey partially up over his head. Shanahan allows the linesmen to break it up rather than try to go back on the offence, as Probert tries to keep throwing. Shanahan did not look dazed after the fight at all, despite taking several heavy shots. Probert clearly won this fight though, both in terms of punch count, as well as the amount of damage inflicted.

You give them a draw, but I give a slight edge to Probie. I filled in the duration and punch stats. Probie is bruised and sore on his cheekbone, but I would still not call this a draw...

Great fight. Shanahan holds his own but Probert clearly outlands him, the only question here is if this one is a narrow or clear Probert win, I pick clear win.

Shanny decided to join the dance after Probie had swung Red WIngs goalie Osgood. During the figth Probie was clearly more active part, but as far I see it, Shanny blocked the most of them and managed to connect once or twice with his own into Probies cheekbones. I call it a draw since Shanny was doing so well even he was an underdog.

Darren McCarty narrow win Fun
3
Bob Probert and Darren McCarty, two former teammates who had a genuine friendship off the ice, meet up near the benches. McCarty is no doubt trying to stand up his team and for one of the Red Wings' leaders in Brendan Shanahan. Shanny took on Probert earlier and lost the fight, so Darren was trying to even the score.

Probert and McCarty grapple and facewash each other. They wrestle until the helmets and gloves come off. The two combatants hang over the Chicago bench as they strain against each other. While they were still wrestling, Probert's teammate Denis Savard tries to play peacemaker and get in between them, but he quickly abandons the idea and backs off.

McCarty and Probert finally move away from the bench, still totally wrapped up. Both men have their jerseys partially pulled over their heads. McCarty gets his left arm loose and tosses five fast punches, getting in three shots on Probert, but nothing serious. They both promptly fall to their knees on the ice, still grappling. The linesmen then hurriedly get in and prematurely stop the fight. Probert throws one inconsequential punch on McCarty as the linesmen pull them apart.

As Probert and McCarty make their way to their respective dressing rooms, they have some harsh words for each other. Friends off the ice they may have been, but, as Mickey Redmond said, "there are no friends on the ice."

McCarty gets a narrow edge for landing the only punches. The officials didn't allow the fight to go long at all, which didn't leave Probert with any chance to fight back. That's too bad, because this could have been a beauty of a battle.

Bob Probert comes together with Darren McCarty and they get in tight with each other and wrestle. McCarty tears off Probert's helmet and gets him bent over the bench boards. A linesman moves in but Probert uprights himself and they each get the gloves off. McCarty throws two lefts at first, landing one, then he gets his elbow pad off and throws three lefts, landing another one. Probert drops to the ice and McCarty misses a left as his arm gets caught up in his jersey. The linesmen get in on them and break it up despite McCarty missing a left, Probert missing a right, and then McCarty missing a right. Second fight of the game for Probert and it wasn't nearly as good as his first one. Probert didn't do as well either, McCarty got off the only punches and landed a couple to gain the slight edge. Poor fight between two former teammates, Probert the long time enforcer for Detroit Red Wings, and McCarty the current one who really took it once Probert was let go by the Red Wings.

Darren McCarty narrow win Fun

The former longtime enforcer for the Detroit Red Wings Bob Probert gets tangled up with Detroit's current tough guy Darren McCarty along the boards in front of the Chicago bench. McCarty loses his helmet and he wrestles with Probert right up against the bench as they drop their gloves. Probert loses his helmet as well. McCarty lands a left as they get some separation, moving away from the boards. The jersey comes up over McCarty's head but he still manages to connect with three more lefts before they fall to the ice and the officials jump in.

These two guys were teammates during McCarty's rookie year which was Probert's last season with the Red Wings. McCarty served as the secondary enforcer to Probert, replacing the departed Joey Kocur in that role (ironically Kocur would rejoin Detroit a little later this season). However, sometimes in the game of hockey you have to do battle with friends and former teammates and that was the case here. The fight itself was a disappointment considering who was involved but McCarty gets the decision for landing (and throwing) the only punches.

McCarty and Probert went at it along the boards. Both were shoving each other tight against the boards. Darren got his left hand loose. He missed a couple of blows. Then, he found the target. He landed a solid blow, an average shot, and a solid connect. The refs stepped in as the jersey's went over the heads of both combatants. Probie landed a weak right after the refs broke up the bout.

I rate this as a narrow win for McCarty. He landed three moderately effective punches. Probie only landed one marginal blow after the conclusion of the bout. Darren won in a short and uneventful contest.

Probert was just sending a message to Detroit that he didn't want to be traded.
He was sending a message to Detroit, but it wasn't that one. It was "get an enforcer", and the message was from Joey Kocur. Detroit had little in terms of toughness after they let Stu Grimson go, they were employing "team toughness". Kocur was unemployed at the time and he thought Detroit was a good fit for him. Kocur called his old buddy Probert and told him to rough them up the next time they played so Detroit would realize they need a real tough guy. Probert punched their goalie in the face, beat up Shanahan, slashed Ward over the head & then suckered him. Ciccone ko'ing Pushor was a bonus. Needless to say Detroit signed Kocur and he fought Probert & Ciccone in the next Detroit-Chicago matchup.

Your last statement is false. Kocur fought Probert and Cam Russell the next time out, which was January 5, 1997. He only fought Ciccone twice in his career: once on November 28, 1993 and again on March 7, 1996, a full nine months before this game.Reply

Enrico Ciccone win by KO Fun
8
Emotions are running hot in this aggrieved divisional contest between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings. Chicago heavyweight Bob Probert is once again out there and causing mayhem against his former team. The Wings' Aaron Ward moved towards Probert to bump him and ended up getting clubbed over the helmet by Probert's stick. Ward goes down in a heap as all of the players and officials converge around Probert.

Ward's teammate Jamie Pushor grapples with big Hawk defenseman Enrico Ciccone as he tries to get at Probert for his cheap shot on Ward. Bob turns to Pushor and delivers a couple good gloved punches to his face. Pushor is angry over getting slugged by Bob, but Probert is no longer near him. Ciccone, however, is near him, so Pushor throws a few punches at Enrico. Ciccone and Pushor jettison their gloves and they end up fighting.

Ward, meanwhile, has regained his feet with the help of a trainer. Ward yaps at Probert, who then attacks without hesitation, knocking the Detroit trainer aside to get at Aaron. Probert mauls Ward like a Doberman would a Pug, tossing him against the bench and belting him with several punches. The linesmen decide to save Ward and allow Ciccone and Pushor to duke it out without any interference.

Ciccone and Pushor break away from the gathering of scrappers and throw some punches. Ciccone has a longer reach, which Jamie learns the hard way. After unsuccessfully tossing a couple shots at Ciccone, Pushor eats a couple good left hands. Pushor goes into purely defensive mode, trying to duck and cover, but it's futile.

The Chicago tough guy pulls his right arm out of the sleeve. Enrico smacks Pushor with a few good right hands, including a jolting short punch to the chops. Ciccone takes his time, measuring his blows and delivering them at will. Pushor looks helpless, just standing there and absorbing knuckle sandwiches.

Chico decides to switch back to the left. BOOM, a massive left hand crashes into Pushor's grill, instantly dropping him down on the ice, face down. Adding insult (and more injury) to injury, Ciccone crouches over the fallen Pushor and drills him in the back of the skull with another punch, bouncing his head off the ice surface.

Pushor is down and out of it. One of the linesmen rushes over and tells Ciccone to stop; Ciccone complies. Ciccone gets up and leaves his victim Pushor sprawled there, then heads to the penalty box amidst a chorus of boos from the Red Wing faithful. Enrico has to apply an ice bag to his paw, which was not surprising, given the number of stiff punches he landed on Pushor's mug. Jamie is able to get up, but is definitely dazed and hurting. He heads to his bench. Meanwhile, the officials succeed in breaking up the fracas between the other Hawks and Wings.

This was a devastating KO win for Ciccone over the woefully outmatched Pushor. This knockout was also the final straw for Detroit coach Scotty Bowman, who was outraged over the physical bullying the Wings endured at the hands of the Hawks in this game.

It was plainly evident that the Wings weren't quite tough enough to hang with the real bad boys in the NHL. Probert ran roughshod over the Red Wings in this game. Bowman certainly didn't want a highly skilled player like Brendan Shanahan to do the fighting for the Wings, nor did he want Darren McCarty to shoulder the entire burden himself. And this particular scrap with Ciccone showed that Jamie Pushor was not a very capable fighter.

Soon, Detroit would get their equalizer in veteran heavyweight Joey Kocur, whose presence would change a lot of things for the Wings' entire season.

Enrico Ciccone win by KO Fun

Aaron Ward goes to check Bob Probert but Probert gets his stick up and flattens Ward. Jamie Pushor rushes in after Probert but is grabbed by Enrico Ciccone. Pushor drops his gloves and tries to grab Probert but a linesman gets between them. Probert lands a right on Pushor who's pulled away by Ciccone. Ciccone drops his gloves and soon Pushor turns his focus onto Ciccone. Pushor lands two rights and then switches hands, throwing four lefts and landing two. Ciccone leans away and Pushor switches hands, landing a right before Ciccone misses two lefts. Ciccone moves in close on Pushor and they proceed to wrestle where Ciccone switches hands. Pushor misses a right and then Ciccone gets his right hand out of his jersey as they grapple. Ciccone lands three rights and then Pushor misses a right as Ciccone lands a right that takes off Pushor's helmet. Ciccone stands back, switches hands, and lands a huge left that floors Pushor. Ciccone goes to his knees and lands a left as a linesman hurries in to get Ciccone off of Pushor. Pushor got a few punches in early on but when Ciccone got set, he took over the fight. Ciccone got in a few rights but then switched hands and floored Pushor with a left. KO win Ciccone.

Enrico Ciccone win by KO Fun

The Blackhawks were putting the hurt on the Wings in this game. Probert nailed Ward in the face with a heavy cross-check. Bob landed a quick right on Pushor as he came to the aid of his teammate. Ciccone grabbed Pushor and the fight began in full earnest.

Jamie landed an average blow and a decent right. He missed several punches. Enrico landed an average shot and missed a couple of punches. He landed a solid blow and a partial connect. He landed a pretty good shot and a huge left that dropped Pushor to the ice. Ciccone landed an unnecessary good blow to the back to the head before the refs stepped in.

This was a KO for Ciccone. He clocked Pushor with a big shot and dropped him. Jamie was staggering after he got to his skates. He was clearly disoriented.

Probert drops Ward and everybody grabs a hold of someone. Unfortunately for Jamie, he ends up with Chico. Just have a look at the punchstats I did and you will get a pretty good idea of what took place in this one. The punch that sends JP to the ice is an extremely hard blow right in the kisser. Pushor drops like a domino-brick, and ends up laying there on his stomach. But Enrico isn't done here, he raises his arm and drills him with one more to the back of the head. Ouch! This last one I count as big hit no4. Poor poor Jamie....

This is a fight I have looked at so many times. I think its great to see a mad man every once in a while in action (read Ciccone :)

Probert causes a big stir, and these two get paired off. Pushor gets the advantage early while Ciccone's attention is elsewhere, but after that it's all Ciccone. He lands several big shots, the last one taking Pushor out. Too add insult to injury, Ciccone blasts another punch and Pushor's head bangs off the ice. Ouch!

I wonder how many games that would be in today's NHL.

Probert TKO's Aaron Ward and a scrum ensues. Everybody has a hold of another, Jamie Pushor and Enrico Ciccone are tangled up and Probert skates up and punches Pushor. Pushor tries to go after Probert but Ciccone is holding onto him and they then drop the gloves. Right when they drop the gloves Pushor throws a fury of punches at Ciccone, a few of the punches landed. Ciccone comes back and throws a haymaker at Pushor, he then tries to throw another haymaker but Pushor dodges it. The two of them hug for a second, Ciccone gets his arm out of his jersey and throws 5 straight bombs at Pushor with all of them landing and the last one KO'ing him. As Pushor lands on the ice most likely unconcious Ciccone punches him in the back of the head with his face down to the ice, real dirty punch by Ciccone.

Pushor was doing ok, throwing some decent lefts, but he was in a bad situation because he's got a monster like Ciccone, while the linesmen are occupied with Probert. Also, Pushor does not do a good job of getting a good grab on Ciccone's arms at all, and you know it's probably only a matter of time before that is going to cost him in this fight. Ciccone gets his right free when it comes out of the bottom of his jersey, and he starts to get Pushor where he wants him, smacking him with a couple of short rights. You can almost sense it's just about to get really bad for Pushor at this point, as they're all alone out in the middle of the ice. Ciccone gets a good grab on the middle of Pushor's jersey and Ciccone is just sizing him up to bomb him with a left. Pushor is not holding on and Ciccone basically is set up for a clear shot. Ciccone does not disappoint and unloads a big left, laying Pushor flat out. It doesn't get much dirtier than that last punch by Ciccone when Pushor was already lying on his face on the ice.

bad choice by pushor to fight ciccone, ciccone gets a right in that knocks his helmet off then a huge left dropping pushor, then adds another hard left while pushor is down

LMAO!!!!! You have to feel for Pushor, but come on. You don't stick your face out in the open like that. He was lucky that first punch by Ciccone missed. Ciccone got his arm out of the sleeve, and brutally KO's him.

Pushor is the first to throw and builds up an early lead landing a couple, Ciccone bides his time to secure his grip then takes over landing several blows before dropping Pushor to the ice face first with a hard left, KO win Ciccone.
