Jamie Pushor and Brent Severyn have the first fight in the scrap-filled game. They grab on a it is a grip that Severyn never relenquishes. Pushor tries a handful of lefts eary on but none land. Severyn's tight hold of Pushor makes it hard for him to get a good swing for a punch. Pushor switches hands and misses a couple with his right, meeting the same problem there as he did with his left. Severyn keeps on grappling and pins Pushor against the glass. Severyn doesn't let go but misses a right and then takes Pushor down well. Boring fight, Severyn just grappled for pretty much the whole fight. At least Pushor threw something. Draw, nothing landed.

Jamie Pushor narrow win Fun

Pushor finishes his check on Severyn in a already chippy game but kind of misses so he decides after to give Severyn a good shove and Severyn takes offense and they rough it up before dropping the gloves. Pushor lands 4-5 punches while they are wrestling around and then Severyn slams Pushor against the boards and lands 1 or 2 before taking Pushor down and trying to get another in but the refs jump in.

Draw or Narrow Win Pushor for landing a couple good shots before Severyn took him down.

Pushor and Severyn had a dull bout. Jamie missed several lefts. He landed a decent right and missed several punches. Brent missed two left hands and hauled Pushor to the ice. I rate this as a draw. Pushor was the more active puncher, but it appeared that he missed most of the punches. He didn't land with enough effectiveness to earn the win in my opinion.

Severyn seemed to have started this one. Pushor does a great job tying him up, he throws a few lefts but they don't land. Severyn eventually gets Pushor against the glass and throws two lefts, making light contact on them, and he slams Pushor down. Draw.

There is a small gathering of players at the end of play. Rene Corbet is the most active one, trying to get something started and eventually having an extremely weak and short fight with Kirk Maltby. Keith Jones got in there and Larry Murphy stepped in as well. Other than that it was not much. Fun

Red Wings agitator Kirk Maltby bumps into Rene Corbet of the Avs during a stoppage in play. A crowd gathers and out of this comes a fight. Corbet moves around the crowd looking for Maltby. He finds him and grabs hold. Corbet misses with a right before falling to the ice. The linesmen quickly move in.

Only one punch was thrown and it did not land before the players fell down. Therefore this fight is a draw.

Was a pretty funny scrum wich Maltby and Corbet originally started with Corbet hitting Maltby in the face and Maltby Made it look worse than it was by jerking his head back. Draper then came in a gave Corbet the old facewash.shoves are exchanged by everbody on the ice. Then out of no were Corbet and Maltby Drop the Gloves, but immeditately fall to the ice cause maltby shoves him to it.

The infamous brawl on March 26th, 1997 between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche. A year before Claude Lemieux had hit Kris Draper from behind into the boards causing Draper to be badly injured. A year had passed and Lemieux had yet to face retribution for his crime. But this was a time when teams in the league actually stood up for each other and fighting was allowed to be used for retribution. They say what goes around comes around and Lemieux would get what he deserved here.

The whole event starts rather harmlessly as Larionov and Forsberg pair off and fall to the ice. Everyone gathers around the 2 players except Lemieux and Darren McCarty. Lemieux is watching the whole event when McCarty rushes up and drops him to the ice with a gloved punch. McCarty starts hammering Lemieux down with lefts and the linesmen don't get involved. Patrick Roy sees this and rushes out of the net to save his teammate. Brendan Shanahan sees him heading for McCarty and intercepts him. The 2 have a collision and both fly through the air and hit the ice. Shanahan grabs Roy but Adam Foote comes over to help his goalie. This brings Mike Vernon from the net and he gets involved in the pileup. Roy gets out of the pile but when Shanahan is tugging away at Foote Vernon grabs Foote as well. Roy seeing the doubleteaming grabs Vernon. They begin to fight....

McCarty and Lemieux have been separated but Vernon and Roy are engaged in a goalie fight at center ice. They battle it out and hit the ice. Meanwhile Shanahan and Foote are still paired off and Shanahan has lost his jersey but they don't fight ( at least not yet). Finally the linesmen momentarily restore peace and get everyone apart.

This event was very important as it shifted the power in the Western Conference. Colorado which had held a psychological edge over Detroit since they had beaten them in the playoffs the year before and in the regular season games in 96-97 up to that point. Detroit was united by the brawl and now had the edge over the Avalanche. This whole event was the most famous of the rivalry between these 2 and the fighting is what made it. The goalies would stay in the game as would McCarty and Detroit would go on to win the game coming from behind to rally from a 2 goal deficit in the 3rd and McCarty of all people would score the game winning goal in overtime. It was a game for the ages even if you don't like either of these teams.

This rivalry was probably the best in NHL history or it is in my book. The reason is it continued for several years and had many different fun events but the main thing is there was a plot and a whole reason for the rivalry. Anytime these 2 teams played each other you knew something would happen and you were always on the edge of your seat. That is what made it a great rivalry. These 2 would have many more fights and battles in the future but none can come close to matching this night in terms of old time hockey.

There had not been any retribution for Claude Lemieux's devastating hit from behind on Kris Draper in the playoffs last year and that would all change with this brawl, the 'Brawl in Hockeytown' as it became to be known as. It all begins when two non-fighting, star players, Igor Larionov and Peter Forsberg, get mixed up with each other. They wrestle around a bit as other players crowd nearby. Lemieux is just watching Larionov and Forsberg go at it when all of a sudden Darren McCarty breaks free from the official who is guarding him and McCarty goes right for Lemieux. In an instant McCarty decks Lemieux with a huge gloved right. Lemieux goes down and covers up on his knees. McCarty continues to demolish Lemieux while officials stand by, not interfering. Patrick Roy comes out to defend his team mate but Brendan Shanahan meets Roy's charge and they collide with each other. Adam Foote and Mike Vernon join in too and soon enough a fight breaks out between Vernon and Roy while Shanahan and Foote pair off. Vernon and Roy have a go and it's a good one with Vernon getting the edge, leaving Roy bloodied. During that time, McCarty is finally restrained from officials and broken up from Lemieux. The Joe Louis Arena crowd is roaring as the brawl comes to a close. Great brawl, one of the best and most famous ever. Fun

One of the Crazy nhl brawls that every broke out. Cluade Lemeiux's hit from last years playoffs started this whole brawl with these two teams. The Avs were up 1-0 in Detroit with lesss than 2 minutes to go in the 1st period. It started with Forseberg was holding on with Larionov and go down. Then it was revenge time as Lemeiux was getting pounded by McCarty. That cause Patrick Roy to come out of his crease and leap into action. Everybody was on the ice fighting. Mike Vernon decides to come out of the crease and fights with Patrick Roy. He threw punches and bloodies Patrick Roy. After the brawl, no game misconducts were handed out. This is considered to be one of the craziest nhl brawls ever happened. Fun

"This is a game that brought the Red Wings together," said
Vernon, who picked up his 300th career win. "Whether it was the
first-period fighting or the overtime goal, a game like this
only helps give you confidence to go into the playoffs. When
you go to the playoffs, everybody has to be ready to do the job
and stay together. Tonight showed the guys were willing to pay
the price."

"They should've had a few different calls," said Colorado coach
Marc Crawford. "The ref told me before the second period that he
blew it. That's small consolation. The linesmen even said it
should've been a gross misconduct on McCarty. It's a little
ironic that he got the overtime goal. We just didn't have
quite enough to fend them off at the end."

"They're just a bunch of homers," said Colorado's Mike Keane.
"They wanted to get back at Claude. My question is, why not at
McNichols? I didn't see Draper out there. He had all the big
guys fighting for him. But that's OK. I just want to know why
they didn't do it at McNichols, why they waited six months."

Asked if he looked forward to a playoff rematch with Detroit,
Keane responded, "I've got no problem playing a heartless team.
Absolutely, I'd like to play them. We don't like each other. It
will make a great series."

"Guys just got paired off. I guess it was just God's will I got
paired off with Lemieux," McCarty said. "Forsberg started the
whole thing. But that's the way hockey is. Sometimes things
like that happen when you're 7 years old and you have to wait
until you're 10 to get back at the guy. Some guys are still
getting even for things that happened when they were kids. You
just wait for your chances. It was intense."

"You've got to have a lot of respect for Patrick, getting into
it, a guy like that. He didn't have to do something like that,"
Foote said.

"As soon as he started, I started," Vernon said of his battle
with Roy. "And then he and Shanny collided. Patrick and Foote
were both on Shanahan. The first guy I grabbed at was Foote,
which was really a stupid thing to do. Then Patrick kind of
jumped me from behind."

Surprising to see these 2 go at it and even more surprising that this is what transpired the huge brawl but I guess stranger things have happened. Forsberg pushed Larionov down. Larionov got back up and smacked Forsberg on the back of the head with a gloved punch. He then gets Forsberg in a headlock and the 2 wrap up and fall to the ice. Fun

Fight called Unfair by Anthony19 on Sep 16, 2005
Reason: Claude Lemieux never intended to fight back

This event is one of the most widely known when it comes to hockey rivalries and fights. It is also probably the most famous event from the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry and a perfect example of how if you injure a player at some point you will have to face the music( or at least that is how it used to be).

A year ago in the playoffs Claude Lemieux had hit Kris Draper from behind and Draper went face first into the boards. Draper suffered massive injuries to his face and had to spend the first 5 weeks of his summer eating food through a straw. Lemieux was suspended for only a measly 2 games despite all of that which really shows the inadequacy of the NHL's front office. But regardless this would fuel possibly the greatest rivalry in sports.

In the 96-97 season Lemieux did not play in the first 2 games against Detroit in that season because of injuries. In the 3rd game between them nothing happened retribution-wise either. But the rivalry between them did not die down and was really fueled again when Lemieux offered no remorse or apology for what he had done. He even went as far at one point to say in the papers that Draper should thank him for what he did because now people actually knew who he was when before he was a nobody. With all of these factors around it was inevitable that something would happen before the season was over.....

A huge brawl started when Larionov and Forsberg paired off and went to the ice. Everyone starts pairing off except for Lemieux and McCarty. Lemieux is standing back watching the event when McCarty decides to dish out the long awaited payback. Interestingly enough McCarty had said in the Detroit paper that morning about the whole rivalry" I was taught the best time to get revenge is when they are not expecting it. He's played long enough he knows something will happen. The trump card is, he doesn't know when." McCarty rushes up to Lemieux and catches him flush on the right side of the face with a gloved punch. Lemieux goes down in a heap. Then the real fun would begin....

McCarty sheds his gloves and starts punching away at Lemieux who has gone into turtle mode. McCarty is working him over with the lefts. Since the linesmen don't come in to save Lemieux this would bring Patrick Roy out of the net to try and save him and lead to an awesome goalie fight. But while everything else was going on McCarty buries Lemieux with a flurry of lefts. Despite being in the turtle position Lemieux still takes incredible punishment. McCarty drags him over near the Red Wings bench and hammers Lemieux down to the ice. Then for good measure he finishes him off with a knee to the face to end it before the linesmen come in to save Lemieux's sorry ass.

This is the definition of a decisive win here as McCarty wrecked Lemieux with lefts and Lemieux needed the linesmen to come in to save him. Lemieux was left bloodied and needed several stitches for his wounds.

McCarty only received a double minor for roughing here. Today McCarty would be suspended and fined. This is the problem the NHL has is it won't allow enforcers to settle matters themselves. The NHL really has no excuses for their crackdown on fighting because this game is probably the most famous NHL game ever because of all the storylines and the way it played out. But McCarty was able to stay in the game and he even scored the game winner. Justice was served here.

Reason: Claude Lemieux never intended to fight back

This was a brutal mauling. Lemieux was public enemy number one after delivering the damaging check for behind that knocked Kris Draper out of a game in the playoffs the previous year. Claude served a suspension, but the Red Wings were looking for payback. To add fuel to the fire, the Wings were trying to unseat the Avalanche as kings of the conference. It was a fierce rivalry.

Peter Forsberg of all people started the conflict. The teams were ripe for a brawl, but the trigger was a minor incident with Forsberg roughing up Larionov. McCarty was near Lemieux as the refs were trying to deal with the developing fracas. Darren landed a solid gloved right and jumped Claude.

Lemieux found himself under siege. McCarty was the toughest fighter on the Red Wings and he was trying to dish out payback for Lemieux's hit on Draper. Claude turtled on the ice. Darren landed a big uppercut that was damaging. Patrick Roy came over to bail out his teammate. Brendan Shanahan cut him off at the pass. Mike Vernon and Adam Foote arrived on the scene.

Roy and Foote couldn't get to McCarty and the beatdown continued. Roy squared off with Vernon in one of the great goalie fights of the era. Foote and Shanahan squared off as well. Meanwhile, Darren continued to pound away at the turtling Lemieux. He landed a solid blow and two good shots. He pinned Claude against the boards and the refs stepped in. McCarty was out of control and tried to knee Lemieux. The refs were able to stop the fight.

I rate this as a decisive win for McCarty. He got his revenge as Lemieux was a bloody mess in the aftermath. This should be considered an unfair fight as Claude never intended on fighting back. Darren landed some damaging shots and the refs had to bail out Lemieux.

Few people felt bad for Lemieux as he established a reputation for dirty play. He was under siege and McCarty got a jump on him, but it was a mistake to not fight back. He was a sitting duck. He got hammered by some power punches. His teammates tried to bail him out, but Vernon and Shanahan kept them at bay.

Lemieux was reviled by many fans. He was a good player who had some terrific postseason performances. He scored a lot of clutch goals for the Canadiens, Devils, and the Avalanche. He played the game on the edge and infuriated the opposition. He was someone who wore the visor early on before it became popular or league-mandated.

Lemieux often went after the weak underbelly of the opposition. He wasn't a good fighter and sometimes shied away from fighting. One of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen was him taking forever to decide to drop his stick and fight Darin Kimble. The Post Office could have delivered a mailed invitation quicker than that.

Lemieux has a complicated legacy. He is often underrated as a player. He saved his best games for crunch time. This ability to perform under pressure reveals character. Incidents like the hit on Draper and the refusal to fight McCarty reveals a character flaw. He made up for it some by slugging freely with McCarty in a rematch. However, there were times when he wanted to play dirty and not have to face the music.

Dino Ciccarelli famously said in the aftermath of the playoff series the previous year, "I can't believe I shook this blankety bleep's hand." Lemieux had a lot of haters and the Red Wings squad was just the most volatile group. Many were thrilled to see McCarty hammer him and give him his comeuppance.

As Igor Larionov and Peter Forsberg are tangled up with each other and official keeps guard of Darren McCarty. McCarty though jolts free from the official and skates over to Claude Lemieux. McCarty whacks Lemieux with a huge gloved punch. Lemieux immediately falls down to his back and Lemieux scrambles to his knees and covers up his head with his hands while McCarty throws down the gloves to deliver more punishment. McCarty begins to unload on Lemieux, throwing and landing a bunch of heavy punches as Lemieux just takes the abuse while ducking his head. McCarty, while still pummeling Lemieux, drags him over to the benches and an official comes and steps in between McCarty and Lemieux. McCarty gives Lemieux a couple knees before an official can finally get McCarty off of Lemieux. While McCarty was pounding on Lemieux a whole brawl breaks out, sending Joe Louis Arena into an uproar. Lemieux's blood is all over the ice and it was great to see McCarty and the Detroit Red Wings get their revenge since it was Lemieux who had hit Kris Draper from behind, severely injuring him.

Lemieux deserved every little bit of this.

In the present game that happened almost a year before this game. Lemieux smashed Kris Drapers face with a hit from behind. At this time in the NHL when a little cheap shotting French men hurt one of your players with a dirty hit he was going to get it and he did.

Forsberg and Larionov locked up and fell to the ice. Everyone gathered and McCarty went straight for Lemieux whom he met with a good glove punch dropping him to the ice. He then dropped his gloves grabbed Lemieux who was in a ball trying to get up and drilled him with an uppercut then slamming his head into the ice. Lemieux then turtled as McCarty pumped him with some more solid lefts to the back of the head as he just picked his shots on the turtle. Roy then charged down to save Lemieux and was nailed by Shanahan. McCarty continued the onslaught of lefts. McCarty then pulled Lemieux up with him and nailed him with another left as he threw him against the Detroit bench. The linesmen then jumped in and McCarty continued by kneeing Lemieux in the head. Finally McCarty was pulled off and sent to the box while a brawl insued around him.

If this happened in today's NHL McCarty would have been suspended, fined and the whole deal. But back at this time when the game had respect and teams and players were held accountable this sort of stuff would happen. I took work off to watch this game for Christ sake and I wasn't even a fight fan at that time.

Detroit clearly won this whole exchange as they won the fights and the game and left the public enemy number one Claude Lemieux in a puddle of his own blood. McCarty also scored the game winner to boot.

I want to know how Lemieux Bled that badly, I guess he didn't cover all of his face when he covered up, and McCarty I think kneed him and stepped on him. While the refs were sweeping Claude's blood into a vertical line with their skate watch Maltby's face when some blood got on his skate he looked disgusted and tryed to brush it off with his skate.

We all know the history that lead up to this fight. Lemieux sucker punching Larionov, Draper coming down to say something but not wanting to fight and then Lemieux hitting Draper from behind and into the boards. It was nasty, it could probably be defined as cheap but it was very, very entertaining hockey and led to one of the greatest rivalries the sport has ever seen. When everyone squares off, Lemieux was foolish to get close to McCarty. He had to know something was coming and maybe he did. Remember, Lemieux was an agitator, much like Steve Ott or Sean Avery. He might have been hoping for McCarty to do something that would get him an extra penalty. I don't think he was ready for how quick McCarty got to him and while it was a sucker punch, it was well deserved. McCarty's left was like a jackhammer, just chopping Lemieux to pieces. Also remember McCarty was far more apt to drop the gloves than Lemieux and did so much more often. Lemieux was simply out of his league and got pounded because of it. It was great to see Lemieux get some respect back in the next game between these two teams.

It's unfortunate that it comes down to stuff like this sometimes, but this game may be the most important game the Wings played in the 1990s. They had been a tremendous team for a few years but there was the general feeling that they were soft. A lot of skillful players and a genius head coach but not exactly a spartan will. The humiliating blowout loss to the Devils in the finals two years earlier only highlighted those weaknesses. This was the first game where they really finally stood up for themselves and each other, all the pieces fell into place and a team greater than the sum of its parts came out of it.
Man, Kocur must have been bummed out to be a healthy scratch for this one, lol

Mike Vernon narrow win Fun

The infamous goalie fight between Mike Vernon and Patrick Roy. This was the game where the Red Wings sought revenge for Kris Draper who had been injured by Avs forward Claude Lemieux in the 1996 playoffs. The Wings would get their revenge but in a surprising turn of events, Lemieux's blood wouldn't be the only Colorado blood spilled on the Joe Louis Arena ice surface.

Darren McCarty drops Claude Lemieux with a punch. McCarty proceeds to beat the living hell out of Lemieux. All of the other Colorado players are tied up with the Red Wings. Seeing that Lemieux is getting no help from the linesmen Roy races from the net. Roy is getting close to McCarty when Brendan Shanahan intervenes. Shanahan intercepts Roy and they collide at center ice and both fly through the air.

By now Mike Vernon has left his net to join the melee. Adam Foote grabs Shanahan who in turn is grabbed by Vernon. Roy gets out of the pile and skates away with his jersey missing. However he quickly comes back when he sees Vernon and Shanahan both having a hold of Adam Foote. Roy grabs Vernon and they get in close. Vernon's goalie mask comes off. Now the fight begins...

The 2 lose their grip on each other thanks to their goalie gloves. Vernon reaches out with his left in an attempt to grab Roy. Instead he catches Roy with a left as he completely misses Roy's jersey. They grab each other and Vernon lands 2 rights. Roy lands 3 rights of his own. They begin wrestling and Vernon manages to grab Roy's leg and take him to the ice.

Vernon and Roy landed an even amount of punches. However Vernon landed the hardest blow and achieved the takedown. The fact that he cut open Roy doesn't hurt either. Those combined reasons make Vernon the winner of this All Star goalie fight.

After the fight Roy is visibly injured with a nasty cut around his right eye. So not only had Detroit taken out Public Enemy Number 1 in Claude Lemieux they also managed to cut open Colorado's goaltender who had defeated Detroit's shooters in the playoffs a year ago. That was simply the icing on the cake for Detroit. Standing up to Colorado and spilling Roy and Lemieux's blood would help Detroit bury the demons of last year's playoffs and help them in their quest to win the Cup this year.

In terms of quality the fight wasn't much. However considering the circumstances and the high profile goalies involved this can be ranked as nothing less then a 10 in my eyes. This game was the peak of the rivalry between Detroit and Roy and you would be hard pressed to find a fight between 2 All Star goalies in a rivalry as bitter as this one.

Claude Lemieux is attacked by Darren McCarty and everything deteriorates after this. As Brendan Shanahan and Mike Vernon are pummeling Adam Foote, Roy charges in to take on Vernon. The intial collision of everyone, including the goalies crashing into each other at center was just awesome. Roy turns Vernon around and connects with a right as Vernon tries to get position. Roy has an edge early because he already ditched his jersey. Roy throws a second right the lands before Vernon recovers with an excellent left cross that unbalances Roy a bit. Mike follows with an overhand right that lands and then another that falls short. Roy wrestles around and throws a right cross that does not quite connect, but opens the door for him. Roy then fires three big rights in a row with the first one looking to land very well, but Vernon absorbs it. Vernon attempts a weak right that misses and the two continue to wrestle. Vernon then ends the fight with an awesome-looking takedown. Mike uses his low center-of-gravity to get below Patrick and topple him to the ice while throwing one more right on the way down before the linesmen intervene. An outstanding goalkeeper bout and a tremendous effort by the undersized Vernon to take on Roy and pick up the edge with his jersey still on. This cannot quite be labeled a clear win because Roy did get some decent shots in, but Vernon gave Roy a gash above the eye and picked the takedown so Mike still gets the win.

Mike Vernon decides to take on Patrick Roy. Roy throws two rights while Vernon is under all that equipment Roy is forcing over his head. Vernon starts off landing a left hand. Vernon lands another right and Roy throws a left hand, which still has his trapper attached. Vernon throws another right and Roy throws a left. Vernon throws a left as Roy tries to block it with his right arm. Roy throws some more rights over the top that land on Vernon. They grapple some more and Vernon gets his arm free, he lands a good right then grabs Roy's left leg, lifts it out and tackles Roy. Desicion Vernon for landing better and a creative takedown. Roy is cut badly.

I have to disagree with those who gave Vernon a decisive victory. The fight was pretty even until Vernon got Roy down and hammered him with a punch that cut him... the cut was actually small but allowed for a great amount of blood flow.. that being said, Roy deserved this loss... he jumped Vernon and nailed him with a punch that almsot knocked his head off but Vernon came back strong... if Roy had done the right thing and simply held Vernon rather than turn him around and punch him nothing would have happened... Vernon wasn't particulary aggressive until he was under attack

Only reason Vernon gets the nod here is because of the cut. That and Roy got half-tackled and double-teamed. If Vernon had the guts to do it all on his own, it would have been more decisive. But it's typical Red Wings under Bowman, stab in the back whenever possible and never fight fair.

Good points. I hav eto add, and I don't think anyone, including myself, has mentioned that Vernon didn't knock Roy down, but rather grabbed his "pants" and put him off balance. However, I stick to my call that it was a clear win for Vernon. Vernon's punches were more effective. Roy made the stupid move of attacking Vernon while he had his glove on and his arms tangled in his arm. He had enough time to get the glove off and shed the jersey considering he jumped Vernon from behind.Reply

It is the biggest myth that some people think that Roy beat Osgood. Vernon clearly outlanded Roy here. KTFO... you are not very smart are you?Reply

Actually, KTFO makes a valid point. This was a very close fight, not a severe beating like some people think.

Vernon definitely got the edge in this battle: he got in the single best punch of the fight and Roy was cut up pretty good. However, Roy got in a pretty stiff shot himself, there was just no blood coming out of Vernon afterwards. A pretty equal number of shots connected on both sides.

To call this fight a "decisive" victory for Vernon is way off-base. I counted six calls as "decisive", and they're all wrong. A "narrow" win is the only truly sensible call.

I don't get it. Everytime I saw highlight clips of goalie fights they showed Roy's fights and I thought to myself: ''Boy, this guy can scrap.'' Even now, I closely analyse the fight and all I can see is a clear win for Roy. Sure, Vernon got a good left in very early but Roy landed way more punches.Reply

Adam Deadmarsh clear win Fun
5
This was an exciting fight-filled game where the Red Wings and Avalanche engaged in warfare on the ice. There was some real bad blood stemming from Claude Lemieux's hit from behind that caused serious facial injuries and left Kris Draper a bloody mess in the playoff series of the previous year. The highlights of this game were Darren McCarty's brutal battering of Claude Lemieux and Mike Vernon's classic win over Patrick Roy in a terrific goalie fight.

Vladimir Konstantinov threw a trademark hip check along the boards on a Avalanche player. Adam Deadmarsh responded by pushing and shoving with Konstantinov. The two decided to settle matters with their fists. Vladmir missed with a left and a right hand gloved punch. He immediately lost his balance and slipped to the ice. Adam took advantage by landing a solid right hand uppercut.

Konstantinov got to his feet and the men wrestled for awhile. Deadmarsh landed a mild right hook to the body. Vladimir did a good job of tying up Adam's right hand. However, he forgot about the left hand and Deadmarsh started to fire away. Adam landed a good left hook. He missed a follow up blow. He landed another good shot. Adam's momentum propelled him forward and he fell on top of of Vladimir. This put an end to the fight.

I rate this as a clear win for Deadmarsh. He landed three good shots in the fight. Konstantinov was unable to land any shots in return. Adam overwhelmed his opponent in this bout and put some hurt on him.

Konstantinov was not a very good fighter. However, he was one of the most physical defensemen in the NHL. Although he was not a big man, his body checks were legendary and he generated a lot of power with his perfectly timed hits. Vladimir was just entering his prime as a defenseman. In 1995-196, he led the league with a plus 60 rating.

Konstantinov was one of the great Soviet players who were picked up by the Red Wings. Detroit management picked up Slava Fetisov and Sergei Federov as well. These acquisitions helped transform the Red Wings into perennial Stanley Cup contenders. Vladimir and Nicklas Lidstrom looked like foundation defensemen of the franchise for years to come.

Detroit won the Stanley Cup in 1997. Konstantinov threw several big hits during the postseason. I remember watching this guy with awe. It was amazing to see an 176 pound guy land such devastating checks. This guy looked to have the potential to be a Hall of Fame player.

Unfortunately, Konstantinov, Slava Fetisov, and team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov were injured in an awful limousine accident six days after the team won the Stanley Cup. Konstantinov and Mnatsakanov were badly hurt and each spent a long time in a coma. Fetisov was fortunate to escape with minor injuries. The accident was caused by driver Richard Gnida, who had a revoked license for previous drunk driving arrests.

Konstantinov's career was over on the spot. He had serious head injuries and paralysis. He would never be same again. His teammates and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch treated Vladimir like gold. The team dedicated the 1997-98 season to him. The Red Wings won back-to-back Stanley Cups. It was a heart-warming scene to witness Vladimir on the ice in a wheelchair and his teammates placing the Stanley Cup in his lap.

The Red Wings deserve a lot of credit for the classy way the organization has treated Konstantinov over the years. He is still welcomed with open arms by the team. Vladimir has continued to suffer great physical obstacles, but he has tried to make the best of the situation. He has become an artist and created some beautiful paintings.

Konstantinov will always be remembered for his ferocious style of play. He played the game with great passion and skill. It is a horrid shame that he was paralyzed because of the criminal negligence of a limousine driver. Vladimir continues to persevere and make the most of his life. He has found solace in his art, devoted family, and the incredibly devoted Red Wings community. He will always be remembered as a great player whose career ended far too soon.

Adam Deadmarsh clear win Fun

After all the mayhem has been cleaned up another fight begins. This time the combatants are hard nosed forward Adam Deadmarsh of the Avs and hard hitting defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov of the Red Wings.

Konstantinov quickly gets in tight with Deadmarsh and wrestling commences. Deadmarsh tries to get the right free but he is effectively tied up by Konstantinov. This doesn't bother Deadmarsh as he simply goes with the southpaw. Deadmarsh throws a flurry of lefts landing a few before Konstantinov goes to his knees. The linesmen come in to separate them.

Deadmarsh landed the only punches to score a clear win as he hammered Konstantinov.

These two tangle up behind the play. They hold on for about ten seconds, before Konstantinov attempts a left. Deadmarsh then gets his left free and fires in a big left, and a few more as Konstantinov starts going down with Deadmarsh still standing. The linesman break it up before Deadmarsh can do any further damage.

Adam Deadmarsh takes on Vladimir Konstantinov during this wild game. They wrestle and Konstantinov opens up to throw a punch. Deadmarsh, the more experienced fighter pounces on the chance and fills in Konstantinov, whose punch misses badly. Deadmarsh throws five lefts and lands three, one connecting hard and forcing Konstantinov to duck. They fall to the ice shortly after. Clear win for Deadmarsh, he pounded Konstantinov.

Brendan Shanahan narrow win Fun
5
Detroit Red Wings' power forward, Brendan Shanahan and Colorado Avalanche defensive defenseman, Adam Foote drop them off the faceoff to start the second period after a rough and wild first. They square off and both miss with a chance to grab on but then Foote succeeds. Foote lands a right that knocks off Shanahan's helmet as he grabs on. Foote misses two right as Shanahan gets in close and wrestles. Then Shanahan throws three rights, landing two while they gain some space from each other. Foote barely misses two rights while Shanahan tries to switch hands but can't. Shanahan then throws four rights, landing one before attempting to switch hands again. Shanahan still can't as Foote has a strong grip. Foote misses two rights and after they spin around, Foote misses three rights. Shanahan misses a right and then the linesmen step between them. Scrappy fight but not a real good one. Shanahan landed more punches but neither landed anything good. The nod to Shanahan in this average tilt between two rugged but skilled players.

Foote and Shanahan had a battle. Adam missed a blow, landed an average shot, and landed a right to the body. The two did some wrestling. Brendan missed a punch and landed a couple of partial connects. Foote missed a few rights. Shanny missed a couple of punches, landed a partial connect, and missed a blow. Adam missed several blows and landed a decent right. Brendan missed two blows and the refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a draw. Both men landed about equally in the decent scrap.

This was obviously only a test in arm strength between both guys to see which guy could impede the other guy's swings. In this case, they pull to a draw since neither guy could land a punch although 1 marginal facialpunch may have landed by each guy. Draw.

A scrum starts in the Red Wings corner. Meanwhile a fight breaks out between Tomas Holmstrom and Mike Keane. The camera shows the scrum for a moment then cuts over to the fight.

Keane quickly takes Holmstrom to the ice. While on his back Holmstrom lands 3 rights. Keane loses his helmet but lands 2 rights. Keane then lands 2 lefts before the linesmen come in.

Although Keane was firing punches at Holmstrom who was on his back this is not a win for Keane. Holmstrom was still trying to fight back and they landed an equal amount of punches making this fight a draw. Meanwhile Severyn and Ward begin a little tussle...

This was one of those fights where the reviewer should take a look at a couple of different feeds. One video posted at DYG shows some action not visible on the other. Holmstrom landed an average blow and missed two shots. Keane got on top of him. Tomas threw punches up at him. He landed an average blow and a decent shot. He missed a punch. Mike landed a solid blow and missed a right. He landed two average lefts. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Keane. I thought his blows were more effective. The fight was a pretty close contest as Holmstrom landed a couple up at Mike.

They throw a couple punches each then both fall to the ice, Keane on top. From The ESPN feed it looks like Keane is just pounding away on Holmstrom. The Detroit feed however, has a close up view of the fight and it shows Holmstrom throwing three rights with all of them landing. Keane then started throwing those heavy bombs everybody seen. He gets 2 on the chin, then switches to the left then throws 3 more, 2 hitting Homer's shoulder and one bouncing of his helmet. Then the linsman came in. When they emerged both had little cuts and were bloody.

Keane just wrestles Holmstrom down and gets on top, but Holmstrom starts throwing punches under Keane and lands three to the face, I doubt Keane was expecting that. Keane gets pissed and starts nailing Holmstrom to the face with both hands, Holmstrom starts covering his face with his right hand and a linesman jumps in before he gets killed. Both landed shots and both were bleeding but Keane landed harder and the fight ended with Keane in complete control and he really could have hurt Holmstrom badly if the linesman wouldn't have jumped in.

Well, thank you for your prompt attention to things, Battleship. Nothing wrong with a guy posting a lot of reviews, but when there's a many-sites track record of inflammatory posts and trouble-making, it doesn't enhance the site. If posting pointless reviews is such an obsession for a given poster, he might do well to go off and create his own website, www.TwilightZoneCompulsions.com or the like. Presumably there would be strict requirements, like a forty-posts-per-day quota for all members. Of course, the webmaster might end up talking to himself in cyber-space.Reply

Brent Severyn and Aaron Ward meet up in the scrum and begin fighting. Severyn's jersey quickly is pulled off and Ward is at a disadvantage. Severyn lands 3 lefts as Ward just tries to hang on. Severyn is able to get rid of his shoulder pads as well and now he is completely bare from the waist up. This isn't good news for Aaron Ward who has nothing to hang onto. Severyn doesn't fail to take advantage of this. Severyn lands 4 rights as Ward just tries to avoid him. Ward manages to wrap an arm around Severyn's neck and get in tight with him. The linesmen are preoccupied with Holmstrom and Keane so referee Paul Devorski comes over to separate the two.

Severyn used his jerseylessness to full advantage. He landed all of the punches in the fight earning himself a clear win and a game misconduct as well for the 2nd altercation.

Severyn and Ward decided to go in the rough fight-filled game. Brent knocked down a Wings player and Aaron went after him. The men did some wrestling at first. He missed a few punches and the refs stopped the fight in a clinch.

I rate this as a clear win for Severyn. Ward didn't generate any offense and Brent was able to land some power shots.

Adam Deadmarsh hits Sergei Fedorov along the boards, then pushes at Darren McCarty who is standing nearby. Deadmarsh wants to avenge his teammate Claude Lemieux after McCarty beat up and bloodied him earlier on. They wrestle briefly and McCarty lands a left. Deadmarsh lands two rights and loses his elbow pad in the process. Deadmarsh misses with two more rights and gets turned around as McCarty cocks the left. McCarty connects with a left, knocking Deadmarsh's helmet off. Deadmarsh lands two rights and misses with a third as he knocks McCarty's helmet off. McCarty lands a left and then pulls the jersey up over Deadmarsh's head. Deadmarsh lands a short left and then they fall to the ice.

Deadmarsh landed more punches and cut McCarty so he gets the win.

McCarty knocks his helmet off with a punch and Deadmarsh comes back with another flurry and knocks off McCarty's hat. McCarty tries to get Deadmarsh's arms under control and takes him down to the ice. Close fight but Deadmarsh was more active and landed the best punch of the scrap.

Darren McCarty and Adam Deadmarsh go at it during the fight-filled game. They throw wildly as they open up, with Deadmarsh connecting on a couple. McCarty is able to get Deadmarsh on the outside and McCarty lands a good one that takes off Deadmarsh's helmet. They trade a few more wild punches and fall down. Even fight, okay fight. McCarty didn't do as well as Deadmarsh but he was out on control and was flailing around.

It was obvious Deadmarsh was looking for a fight and he found one in McCarty. Deadmarsh got off quick and often. It looked as if McCarty never really got going. I think he was surprised by the speed and strength of Deadmarsh. It looked like McCarty only threw 3 punches and didn't really land one . Deadmarsh was very active, throwing many rights and landing quite a few. He even snuck a little left in there although it glanced off McCarty's shoulder. I call this a clear win due to the fact that Deadmarsh threw way more and landed some good ones and put a little mouse under McCarty's left eye..

Deadmarsh nailed Fedorov and McCarty went after Adam. Darren missed a punch and landed a solid blow. He missed three lefts. Deadmarsh missed two punches and landed a solid blow. He missed a right. McCarty landed a partial connect. Adam landed an average connect. He missed a blow and landed a solid right. He missed a left. Darren landed an average left. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Deadmarsh. He landed with better pop to secure the win.

I really don't know why everyone call this a win for McCarty. There was a good replay of this fight and McCarty didn't really land any good shots, Deadmarsh caught him with a good right and landed some more rights before they went down with McCarty on top. Deadmarsh landed more and better and McCarty had a little cut under his left eye.

I don't see how someone can see this as a decisive McCarty win. Deadmarsh landed more frequently and solidly. McCarty wrestles Deadmarsh down, but I thought this isn't wrestling?

The fight reviews for this one are very inconsistent, but I don't see how anyone could call this anything besides a win for Deadmarsh, maybe even a draw but that's even stretching it. Deadmarsh landed a few solid punches while McCarty didn't really land anything. McCarty got the takedown but that was really it.

Deadmarsh threw more punches and hit McCarty with one more shot then McCarty hit him. But McCarty avoided Deadmarsh's punches well and picked his better. McCarty landed on three clean shots before getting the jersey over and wrestling Deadmarsh to the ice.

Close fight, I still think McCarty won it based on landing the better punches. It's always hard to determine who to give the advantage to when one fighter landed more but the other landed better. McCarty I think though got the advantage here as Deadmarsh only seemed to have landed one shot more then McCarty. McCarty landed with two shots that were better then any of which Deadmarsh landed.

Not a good showing by McCarty who lands one punch while Deadmarsh finds his range and lands 3 or 4 punches.

I don't know, but maybe because he landed more and better punches? All McCarty did was wrestled him to the ice, he didn't land much of anything.

In the midst of another scrum in this nasty game Jamie Pushor and Uwe Krupp meet up. They exchange a few gloved punches before dropping the gloves.

They grapple momentarily until Pushor gets his left arm free. He lands 3 lefts which send Krupp's helmet flying. Krupp comes back with 2 rights and Pushor is helmetless. They have an exchange of punches with Pushor throwing lefts, and Krupp rights. After this even exchange they get in close and just hang onto each other. The linesmen break the up.

The 2 landed evenly so a draw is in perfect order.

Uwe Krupp and Jamie Pushor drop the gloves. They grapple at first, each one tugging at the other's sleeves. Then Pushor opens up and throws a handful of left hooks. Krupp goes with the right and gets in a couple right hooks. They continue the exchange for a couple more seconds, each guy pounding hooks into the other. They throw a couple more, Pushor first then Krupp. They both tire themselves out and just stand there, leaning head against head waiting for the officials to break them up. Good fight, even battle.

Pushor clearly wanted this fight more then Krupp. After some tugging, Pushor throws 3 lefts, of which only 1 seems to land and knocks off Krupp's helmet. Krupp comes back with a couple of rights with no noticeable damage. Then they both start throwing, a little bit of Rock Em', Sock 'Em Robots! Pushor with the lefts and Krupp with the rights. After a little more grappling it then appears that Krupp lands a left and then a right before they tie up and are separated by the linesmen. The fight was pretty even up until the end but Krupp landed those 2 late punches to earn a very narrow win.

This was a good fight and both men landed with effectiveness. The two paired off during a scrum. Pushor missed a few blows and landed a solid shot. He missed a punch and landed a partial connect. He missed two lefts. Krupp landed an average punch and missed a blow. He landed a solid shot and an average punch. Jamie landed three average blows and a partial connect. Uwe landed an average punch, missed a blow, and landed a solid shot. He missed two blows and landed a solid connect. Pushor landed an average punch. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a draw. Both men landed a similar number of punches.

The final fight of the night is also one of the better ones on the night. These two big boys come together in a scrum. Both drop the gloves do some grappling. Then they both have a nice exchange with each guy landing 4 punches. They then tie up and the linesman move in the separate them. Solid draw.
