There is a gathering of players in front of the Washington bench. Chris Simon, Dale Hunter, Darren Langdon, and Ryan VandenBussche are among the players involved.

VandenBussche and Simon get nose to nose and have words. Simon gives VandenBussche a slight push. VandenBussche retaliates and hits Simon with a gloved punch. Simon responds with one of his own. The linesmen separate them and they each get two minutes for roughing.

Rematch between these two heavyweights, Berube floored Cairns in their first fight but unfortunately this one wasn't very memorable scrap. They start pushing and shoving behind the play. The gloves come off and they grab on right away. Cairns throws a right that misses, Berube throws three short rights that don't land either. Then they just wrestle to the ice. Cairns gets back up quickly and pulls Berube's jersey over his head, while Berube is still on his knees. Unfortunately for Cairns the linesmen jump in at that point before he can get advantage and stop the fight. No punches landed and the fight didn't even last ten seconds. Draw in a shit fight.

With five minutes to go in the first period Craig Berube shoves Eric Cairns way behind the play, sparking a fight. They drop the gloves and get a hold of each other with the left hand. Cairns misses a right and then after Berube misses a right, they each miss a right at the same time. Cairns goes off balance while trying to lean away but it's Berube who falls down as he misses his next right. Cairns is brought down with Berube and Berube misses right from his knees while Cairns gets up. Carins declines to throw back again Berube though and just lets the linesmen get in and stop the fight. Very bad fight that was over before anything got going. No punches landed so it's a draw.

Ryan VandenBussche clear win Fun
10
Ryan VandenBussche, the tough Ranger rookie, takes on rugged Capitals' defenseman Brendan Witt. They meet up near the blue line and shed the leather, then really get down to business.

There is little in the way of defense in this fight. VandenBussche and Witt go lefty and both men swing away wildly and with bad intent. At first, VandenBussche's punching speed and sheer ferocity appeared to take Witt by surprise; VandenBussche's left hands were fast, hard, and accurate. Witt got tagged a few times early in the battle.

Witt gamely stood in there and swung away with his left hand, but most of his shots went wide of the target. Vandy, meanwhile, was relentless. Ryan kept his southpaw moving like a piston. Witt finally had enough and turned his head to the side to avoid getting drilled too directly in the face. After regrouping for a second, Witt began firing back with right hands.

Switching hands helped Witt land some punches, but it also made him even more vulnerable to Vandy's jackhammer lefts. Ryan connected several more shots, including a wicked uppercut. Witt showed some serious grit taking those punches and still staying in the fight.

At this point, VandenBussche's sweater started to come off. The officials moved in to stop it. Vandy let up a little bit to allow the linesmen to intervene, so Witt tried to take advantage and sneak in a couple right hands. The linesmen then stepped in for real and halted the battle.

It was an incredible fight, one of the very best of the legendary 1996-97 season. VandenBussche clearly outslugged Witt, landing perhaps twice as many punches overall and certainly getting the edge in quality punches. Witt showed some tenacity and ability to take a punch, but the victory belonged to RVB.

Ryan VandenBussche narrow win Fun

Right after a faceoff, Ryan VandenBussche, just recently called up from the AHL gets into his first NHL fight, taking on Brendan Witt. They get a hold of each other's sweaters and Witt throws three rights, landing two before missing a right as VandenBussche lands a left. Witt switches hands then while VandenBussche lands another left. Then Witt lands four lefts as VandenBussche throws three lefts, landing two that jolt Witt a little. Witt gets his right arm up, trying to block VandenBussche who throws four lefts, landing one. Witt gets himself set again and throws two lefts, landing one while VandenBussche leans away. VandenBussche then lands four lefts, jarring Witt a little while Witt throws four lefts, landing two while putting his head down. VandenBussche then misses a left before taking Witt's helmet off, then Witt changes hands and misses a left. VandenBussche ducks and then has his left come out of his jersey after landing a left and also loses the elbow pad. VandenBussche misses a left and then Witt misses a right while VandenBussche misses a left. They briefly come in close quarters with each other but VandenBussche stands back and then lands a left before throwing five lefts and landing two as Witt throws five rights, landing four. Witt then gets in close quarters and tries to take off VandenBussche's helmet but it remains on. VandenBussche then misses a left while Witt stands back and VandenBussche's helmet falls off. Witt misses a right as VandenBussche misses a left and loses his sweater, then VandenBussche lands a left as Witt misses a right. Witt puts his head down and moves back into close quarters while VandenBussche misses a left. VandenBussche misses a left, then stands back while switching hands. VandenBussche misses a right and then tries to get rid of his jersey as Witt throws two rights, landing one with the linesmen getting in. A great bout here. Witt and VandenBussche just slugged it out the entire fight, there was almost no holding on in this one, they were punching away on each other. Both landed with the slight majority of their punches, connecting fairly equally in quantity but VandenBussche landed better by a wide margin. VandenBussche connected with a handful of big punches, clearly jostling Witt on a few occasions. Witt got in a couple big punches of his own but his weren't as effective on VandenBussche. VandenBussche gets the nod from me.

These two drop the gloves back in the Washington end. They flailing lefts at eachother right away. Vandenbussche gets in about 5 lefts right off the bat, one of them snapping back Witt's head. Witt tries a couple that miss, and tries to block Vandenbussche's punches with his hands. They grapple for a little while and get the lefts going again. They each exchange about three, then Witt puts his head down, and Vandenbussche rips off his helmet. Witt throws a haymaker right that Vandenbussche ducks. Vandenbussche gets his left arm free from his jersey, and starts giving it to Witt. Witt fires wild rights back that mostly miss. They each throw some more and grapple. Vandenbussche fires in some more lefts and a couple rights toward the end, and the linesman come in. Witt throws a late punch at the top of Vandenbussche's head.

Tremendous fight with both guys hammering away the whole fight, really close as both land some huge blows, Vandy lands just a bit more though really snapping Witts head back a few times to earn a very hard fought win.

In an interview with reporter Amy Spencer, VandenBussche had this to say among other things : "The one that stands out the most is my first fight in NHL regular season play against Brendan Witt with Washington. It was just a good battle, plus it got on Don Cherry's Grapevine."Reply

Darren Langdon narrow win Fun

Shortly after the Ryan VandenBussche and Brendan Witt fight, two heavyweights, Darren Langdon and Chris Simon drop them and go. They grapple with Langdon keeping in relatively close to the larger Simon. Langdon misses a left and Simon manages to connect with a left. Langdon then starts talking to Simon as they grapple and misses two lefts. Simon misses a left and then Langdon connects with a left afterwards. Simon then works through two lefts that connect and removes the helmet of Langdon after. Simon misses two lefts while gaining some separation but then Langdon connects with a left. Simon misses a left and Langdon connects on two lefts as Simon gets back in pretty close with Langdon while missing two lefts. They get some separation though and Simon connects with a left before missing a left while Langdon misses a left. Simon connects on a left and then misses a left while Langdon misses a left and gets in pretty close with Simon connecting on a left after getting inside. Langdon changes hands and connects with two rights as they wrestle but Simon gets some separation from Langdon but soon moves back in fairly close. Langdon throws three rights and connects on two, loosening Simon's helmet. Langdon then misses a right and Simon throws four lefts, connecting with one as they manage to get separation once again. Langdon misses a right but then works outside and connects on a right. They go back in close and Simon connects with two lefts before Langdon connects on a right while they wrestle. The linesmen then step in and break it up. Lengthy tilt between these two tough enforcers. Simon did better early on but tired a little bit late when Langdon fought strongly. Decent fight, slight edge to Langdon for landing more and better punches though not by much.

Langdon and Simon decided to have a go. Darren missed a left. Chris missed a few punches and landed a partial connect. He missed a punch, landed a partial connect, and missed two blows. Langdon landed an average blow, missed a punch, and landed a decent left.

Simon wasn't very accurate with his punches. He missed two punches and landed a partial connect. He missed a blow. Darren missed a punch and landed an average shot. He missed a blow, landed an average connect, and landed a decent shot. He missed a punch and landed two decent right hands.

Chris missed a punch and landed two decent blows. Langdon missed two punches and landed an average shot. Simon landed a light punch. Darren landed a decent blow. The refs stopped the contest.

I rate this as a narrow win for Langdon. It was a good technical performance. He kept Simon from landing many punches. The ones that did connect lacked pop. Darren landed more blows and with better impact to earn the win.

Adam Graves narrow win Fun

Graves and Tinordi had a fight in front of the Capitals net. Adam got a strong grip on Mark's right arm early in the fight. This hindered the ability of Tinordi to land effective rights. Adam missed a couple of rights of his own. He landed an average punch, missed a blow, and landed a solid connect. Mark missed a couple of rights and landed a partial connect. He missed a punch.

Tinordi was trying hard to get the right hand loose. Graves had a very effective grip. Adam stopped punching and it took all of his effort to keep Mark's right hand from becoming a weapon. Graves pushed him against the boards. Tinordi finally got the hand free to a certain extent. He took off Adam's helmet and landed a decent right hand. The refs stopped the fight before and further punches were able to connect.

I rate this as a narrow win for Graves. He landed the punches with better pop. Tinordi landed a couple of blows with limited effectiveness. This was a terrible fight, but I think Adam did enough effective punching to earn the win.

Adam Graves and Mark Tinordi get tangled up beside Olaf Kolzig and the two veteran tough guys drop their gloves. They grab on and Graves throws two rights, landing one before Tinordi replies with a missing. Graves then misses another two rights and Tinordi responds with a missing right. Before getting in tight, Graves throws two rights and lands one. They wrestle for a lengthy, Tinordi unable to get loose from Graves' grasp. Graves takes Tinordi to the boards where Tinordi pushes Graves' helmet off before landing a right. The linesmen then come in and break up the fight there. Slight edge to Graves in a poor, dull, fight.
