| Nick Kypreos and Scott Daniels start jousting and the gloves come off as it generates a fight. They get in tight and start exchanging a good amount of lefts, fast at first but then they slow down and start wrestling. Both switch to the right and continue to wrestle, throwing very rarely. They change back to the left and throw a bit more, then the officials step in. Kypreos threw ten and landed six while Daniels threw twelve and landed five. Really close fight, I think it's a draw. Not a very good fight to me, uneventful. |

Nick Kypreos (TOR) VS. Scott Daniels (PHI)
These two chase each other for a minute after the faceoff and end up dropping the gloves at the blueline. They tie each other up quickly and both attempt to throw punches, but none land. They continue to hug as Kypreos throws a couple of wild punches at Daniels. Daniels throws a decent uppercut and it appears that Kypreos is trying to wrestle him to the ice. They are still in tight as Kypreos lands one that knocks off Daniels helmet. They push each other against the benches as the linesmen come in. Nothing spectacular landed really, I am calling it a draw.

Tie Domi (TOR) VS. Scott Daniels (PHI)
With just eight seconds left in the game, Domi challenges Daniels and the fight for the second time in their careers. The bigger Daniels gets the upper hand early as he pins Domi to the boards and lands a bunch of quick body shots. Domi then starts to warm up as he throws some solid punches at Daniels and starts to DOMInate. Tie lands a bunch of hard punches as Daniels falls to the ice. The linesmen come in and Tie just keeps throwing. Decisive win for Domi becuase Daniels needed to be rescued by the linesmen and because Daniels ended up in a hopeless situation
Decisive win for Domi. |

Jun 23, 2008 01:28 ET | Tie Domi decisive win | Fun 7 |
Domi once again proves that size doesn't matter as he wins in convincing fashion over the taller Scott Daniels. Despite being undersized for an enforcer Domi usually came out on the winning side in a scrap most times in his career and this is no exception.
It's in the dying seconds of the hockey game and Philadelphia is ahead 3-1. Toronto has Domi out there and Philly counters with Daniels. The 2 line up against each other and they have a discussion before the puck is dropped. They agree to go and as soon as the puck is dropped the gloves fly off.
The 2 lock up and Domi misses with 2 early lefts. Daniels gets his left going and hits Tie's shoulder with several lefts. The 2 exchange a few more lefts with nothing landing. Domi then connects with a left that seems to stun Daniels. Domi takes over the fight now as he gets his left hand going and he catches Daniels with several as Daniels drops his head and Tie knocks him to the ice.
Decisive win for Domi as he was hammering away at Daniels who was on the ice and the linesmen had to jump in to save him. Good fight but the real festivities were next... |

Scott Daniels and Tie Domi are lined up shoulder to shoulder for a faceoff in front of the Philly bench. The puck drops and their gloves are off in no time.
Daniels gets going early, throwing a flurry of rights that don't land all that well. Domi then rights himself and starts to get the left-handed jackhammers in on the Flyer. Domi overwhelms Daniels with repeated punches to the face and head.
Daniels gets beaten down to the ice, eating left after left, and has to be rescued by the officials. It was a decisive win for Domi. |

| Tie Domi and Scott Daniels, two in the heavyweight category agree to have a go after a draw. They grab on with the right without much of a squareoff. Domi lands a left as Daniels ducks and Daniels then misses a left. Domi responds with a missing left while being pushes backwards into the bench boards by Daniels who likewise misses a left. Daniels chucks three lefts and lands one and then stops. Domi moves off the boards while Daniels continues to duck. Domi misses a left and then Daniels changes hands and misses a right. Domi lands a left to the body and Daniels changes hands and puts his head up to miss a left while Domi ducks. Domi pushes Daniels against the boards and Daniels tosses two lefts and lands one. Domi puts his head up and Daniels gets off the boards. Daniels starts ducking again and Domi unleashes five straight lefts, landing four. Daniels loses his helmet and his balance. Domi keeps on throwing, unloading three lefts and landing two before the linesmen come in. Decisive win Domi, because the linesmen came in to protect Daniels while he was down on the ice and Domi was throwing (and landing) lefts. Pretty good fight, both guys were active and momentum swung in both men's favour. |

| Right off the draw they drop the gloves. Domi connects with too good shots as Daniel's fires some weak punches to the shoulder. Domi then gets Daniel's bent down and hits him with two good shots before Daniel's answers back with one two the back of the head. Domi though pulls out gets Daniel's bent over and POW! Domi just hammers Daniel's with some lefts as Daniel's goes down where Domi pounds his face in while Daniel's is laid out on his back. Clear Decisive win as Daniel's was down flat while Domi dropped bombs on him. |

EC 2006 fight reviews 1 fight log
Jun 24, 2008 13:48 ET | This was one of the better brawls that took place in the 96-97 season. There were a lot of big brawls that year but the reason this one is high on the list is it lead to a goalie fight. The fight between Potvin and Hextall here was one of the best goalie fights to take place and as for the 96-97 season is only surpassed by Vernon-Roy. The rest of the brawl was not as interesting but anytime you can get 2 goalies going at it like they did you have something special.
It's at the very end of the game and Domi and Daniels have been sent off but things have not cooled down. Philly wants more and unfortunately for Toronto they have a tougher lineup. That year Philly had a whole line of tough players ( Daniels, Lacroix, Kordic) while Toronto just had Domi. Domi's partner in crime the previous year Ken "The Bomber" Baumgartner had been traded to Anaheim at the end of the season so the only tough players for Toronto were Domi ( who had been sent off) Nick Kypreos, and Wendel Clark. Philly puts out Lacroix and Kordic while Toronto only has Wendel Clark and a bunch of other non-fighters.
Murphy has the puck in the Toronto zone and he fires it down the ice as the time runs out. In comes Lacroix though to take a run at Murphy. Toronto does not appreciate this one bit. Potvin takes a poke at Lacroix as he skates by and in comes Clark to go after Lacroix. They go to the ice and everyone else chooses a dance partner. Hextall sees this happening and rushes down the ice to go at it with Potvin.... | Fun 9 |

All the other players on the ice just pair off and no other fights occur. Wendel Clark comes in and knocks Lacroix to the ice. They have a short fight with Clark getting the win while the two goalies get the masks off and start going. Potvin and Hextall have a very good fight, Potvin with the edge as Hextall had a cut on his forehead. Good brawl. | Fun 8 |

Feb 7 10:47 ET | Felix Potvin narrow win | Fun 8 |
The game is nearly over and emotions are still running hot between the Maple Leafs and Flyers. A scrum develops in the Toronto zone. Daniel Lacroix has the Leafs angry with him for some reason. Goaltender Felix Potvin lays a nasty two-handed slash on Lacroix's leg. It was so hard a slash, it broke Felix's stick! Lacroix had no time to react to Potvin's slash, as Wendel Clark then promptly tackled Daniel and hit him a couple times. All of the players on the ice start getting involved and the officials suddenly have their hands full.
Philly goaltender Ron Hextall saw the slash by Potvin and comes charging out of his his end of the ice. Hextall homes in on Potvin, who looks a little nervous but is perfectly willing to go. The two goaltenders shed the gloves and blockers, tug each others' masks off, and start slugging away with big right hands.
Potvin and Hextall both land some huge shots in a real slugfest. The Philly crowd is going crazy and all the other players are shoving away at each other as Hextall and Potvin toss haymakers, which made this rare goalie fight even more intense. They exchange blows, and then Potvin gets a better range and cranks Hextall with several quick punches that bust the Philly goalie's forehead open. Hextall answers with some more rights, including two bombs to the face that stagger Felix for a second.
The two goalies then slow down and grapple. Hextall still tries to throw a few more, but his last several punches fall short. Hextall and Potvin finally run out of gas, toss some weak punches that might have connected on the body, and then hold on until the linesmen separate them.
It was NOT a clear or decisive win for Potvin; both men were throwing and landing, and Potvin did a little better overall by landing a few more punches and opening up a cut. Give Felix the edge in a good battle.
The Leafs were all roaring over the fight. Tie Domi, who was already in the dressing room after his fight with Scott Daniels, came running back out to the bench to witness the Potvin-Hextall battle. Domi taunted Hextall by gesturing at his cut forehead and yelling, "Oh yeah! Oh yeah! How do you like that? Fuck you!" Hextall responded by pointing at the scoreboard (the Flyers won the game). Great entertainment, and an unexpectedly great fight between two goalies! |

...and the 2 goalies lock up and grab each other. The 2 rip off the others masks and they then proceed to slug it out. The 2 goalies go at it toe-to-toe fighting it out as all of the other players on the ice go at it. After they exchange a few punches Potvin starts to land better as Hextall's punches are coming up short. Hextall still manages to land a few and they get in close and Hextall's jersey comes off. Potvin lands 2 more rights before Hextall responds with a few short rights as they get in close. By now with all that gear on they have tired out and they just hang onto each other trying to catch their breath. By now everyone else has been separated and the linesmen come over to break them up.
Narrow win to Potvin here as they both slugged it out and landed some but Potvin landed slightly better and he cut open Hextall so he gets the win.
Great event and probably the best brawl between Toronto and Philadelphia until Toronto moved back into the Eastern Conference. Afterward Domi came back out to taunt Hextall about losing the fight. Domi was probably letting off some steam because Toronto lost the game 3-1. So you can say Potvin won the battle, but Toronto lost the war lol.
I give it a 10 because to me nothing is as exciting as a goalie fight especially a toe-to-toe one! |

| Felix Potvin is engaged by Ron Hextall and they go at it. Both leave the masks on but both are taken off in early grappling. Hextall throws a couple handfuls of rights but only lands a couple. This is while Potvin throws a handful of rights and connects with a few. Potvin throws a few more rights and misses a couple. Then Hextall throws a handful more of rights and lands a couple. Then Hextall's jersey comes off. Potvin throws a few rights and misses a couple. Then Hextall throws a couple handfuls of rights but only connects with a couple. Meanwhile Potvin throws a couple lefts but misses them and a couple rights and lands one. Then Potvin misses a few lefts. They grapple for a long time and then are broken up. Hextall was very inaccurate while Potvin was but to a far lesser extent. Plus Potvin did damage, opening up Hextall fairly well. |

Hextall lands two huge rights in a row that stop Felix in his tracks. Potvin gets Hextall's jersey and fires away, landing several. Hextall comes back, firing a bunch of weak ones that mostly miss, while Potvin lands most of his. Nice body shot from Potvin, and they are exhausted. Hextall has a nice cut going. Great stuff, although it clearly wasn't a decisive win as some people make it out to be. |

| Most have picked Potvin here, but I must admit that I had a hard time picking a winner in this one. I thought this was a very even scrap. Maybe the slightest edge to Potvin, but I still call it a draw. It looks like Hextall nailed Potvin with a really good punch during the fight that buckled the knees of Potvin. No need to recapture the entire fight as it's been done here already. Goalie fights are quite rare and this is definitely one of the best. You might not have liked Hextall, but he was certainly a character (and really could use that stick as a hatchet). |

| Wow. For me, this goes down as quite possibly the best goalie fight ever. At the end of this game, a brawl breaks out, and Hextall charges to the other end of the rink and challenges Potvin. They grab each other, and they yank each other's masks off. Then they go toe to toe. They trade big right hands for a little while, and keep tying each other up. Potvin landed a few good shots, and cut Hextall. I believe he landed better, and since he bloodied up Hextall, I give him a narrow win. Very close, but I give Potvin a small edge in this legendary, toe to toe goalie fight. |

| Hextall charges at Potvin all the way across the ice. Then they rip each other's helmets off and start going toe to toe in an exciting exchange. Eventually, they are gassed and the refs come in break them apart. Both landed good punches, but Hextall seemed to land the best punch of the fight. However, after the fight it became evident that Hextall had a cut. I have to call it a draw. Many people picked Potvin because of the cut, but for me it's too close to call. |

Oct 21, 2008 00:00 ET | | Too many 10s here. Again, guys, this was a great fight, but a 10? Nah. | Chris I understand what you are saying about just because a goalie is fighting doesn't make it a 10. But like I said before IMO nothing is more exciting then a goalie fight especially in this day and age. Most of them aren't that special but this one is certainly worthy of a 10 as it actually was a toe-to-toe war.
One thing that perplexed me was you say the Schwab-Soderstrom fight was ranked too high. I agree with that even though I understand why some people might give it a 10. But in looking through your reviews you gave the Emery-Biron fight from several seasons ago a 10 when only about 5 or 6 punches were exchanged. Then you give an actual toe-to-toe battle between goalies an 8. I was just wondering about that because that seems to be a contradiction to what you were saying earlier. | Reply |

Oct 24, 2008 15:19 ET | Leafs win battles, lose war to Flyers by Frank Orr. Toronto Star. Nov 11, 1996.
PHILADELPHIA - The Maple Leafs had their moments at the CoreStates Center last night, good stretches of pressure in the Philadelphia Flyers zone.
But what the Leafs did not have was the finish or the ability to beat Flyers goalie Ron Hextall in dropping a 3-1 decision.
The game ended with a major scuffle in the final seconds, including one at the end of the game where all 10 skaters and both goalies squared off. Hextall and Leaf netminder Felix Potvin exchanged numerous punches, while both coaches exchanged heated words across the benches.
The slow-starting visitors fell behind 2-0 in the second period before a late goal made it close after 40 minutes. The Leafs had good third period pressure on Hextall but were unable to tie the score and the Flyers locked it up with a late goal.
John LeClair scored twice and Pat Falloon had a single.
Mathieu Schneider had the Leaf goal.
The Flyers scored at 5:12 of the first period when the puck went back to Kevin Haller at the point after a faceoff in the Leafs zone. Falloon tipped in Haller's shot.
Nick Kypreos of the Leafs, in the lineup when Brandon Convery missed his second consecutive game, received a match penalty during a fight with Scott Daniels.
When trying to remove Daniels' helmet during some in-close combat, Kypreos made contact with Daniels' eye, an action that was deemed gouging by referee Bill McCreary. Kypreos received a five-minute match, which meant the home side had a long power play but was unable to score due to a combination of Potvin, some good defensive effort and the Flyers' own offensive deficiencies.
The Leafs were turned back on two big chances by Hextall, who first stopped a Todd Warriner shot, then sprawled with his stick extended to halt Mike Craig with the rebound and seconds later, while sitting on the ice, made a good catch of a shot by Sergei Berezin.
In the second period, Potvin continued his valiant work although he did yield a goal. He made a brilliant point-blank save on LeClair early in the period but was helpless when LeClair took a drop pass from Karl Dykhuis at the top of the circle and hammered home a high rocket.
The Flyers looked for the Leaf-killer but Potvin made a dazzler on a Falloon tip and did the splits to kick away a Rod Brind'Amour bid.
The Leaf power play finally got them on the board at 18:30 when they placed sufficient traffic in front of Hextall to obliterate his view of a Schneider shot from the point and the puck went between his legs.
The Flyers placed the Leafs zone under considerable pressure early in the third period but when the Leafs finally shook off the shackles, they stormed Hextall repeatedly.
The Flyer veteran stopped Wendel Clark on a point-blank chance, then Berezin rang a shot off the post.
A questionable penalty to Kirk Muller at 14:34 gave the Flyers a big chance. He was jousting with LeClair near the Flyers crease when he bumped Hextall to draw a sentence.
The Flyers power play provided the clincher at 15:44 when a shot from the point by Janne Niinimaa was deflected behind Potvin by LeClair, who has been involved in 10 of the Flyers' last 12 scores.
When Gilmour and Brind'Amour had an outbreak of the nasties the game finished on a note reminiscent of the clubs' 1970s slugfests. First Tie Domi punched out Daniels' lights in a fight, then Clark and Dan Kordic had a joust. Hextall then skated the length of the ice and engaged Potvin in a fight, the Leaf goalie more than holding his own in the lengthy scrap.

Cat is aiming to avoid being scratched Tim Wharnsby. Financial Post. Toronto, Ont. Nov 12, 1996.
Ron Hextall has a stitched-up gash over his left eye as a reminder of his brawl with Felix Potvin, but now it's up to the disciplinary eye of Brian Burke to see if further penalties will be levied.
The NHL senior vice-president will investigate the game-ending brawl the Maple Leafs and Flyers were involved in on Sunday night.
During the altercation, Hextall skated 200 feet to clash with Potvin, the Leafs' No. 1 goalie and now No. 1 contender to Tie Domi's undisputed title as the club's champion pugilist.
If somebody will be suspended, the long arm of Burke's law will fall on Hextall rather than Potvin.
The volatile Hextall was given penalties for leaving the crease, instigator, a fighting major, a 10-minute misconduct and game misconduct, while Potvin was whistled for leaving the crease and a fighting major.
``The people in the league now are pretty fair,'' Hextall said yesterday, adding that under former league rules enforcer Brian O'Neill some decisions were ``taken off of reputation and I think that was unfair.''
``But right now,'' Hextall said, ``I think Brian Burke is a pretty straight shooter when it comes to this.''
Leafs president Cliff Fletcher doesn't expect his club to be hit with any further fines or suspensions.
``I'm not anticipating that we will be fined,'' he said. ``I think the league would have notified us if that was the case.''
NHL rule 56 (g) states ``any teams whose players become involved in an altercation, other than during the periods of the game, shall be fined automatically $25,000 in addition to any other appropriate penalties that may be imposed upon the participating players by supplementary discipline or otherwise.''
It appeared that when Flyers thug Daniel Lacroix went after Toronto defenceman Larry Murphy, the incident that precipitated the game-ending fisticuffs, it was before the final buzzer sounded.
A league spokesperson said there was more than one incident under review by Burke.
The Leafs were upset over a Rod Brind'Amour cross-check that hit captain Doug Gilmour and a Leafs' player threw a water bottle across the rink at referee Bill McCreary as the teams left for the dressing room.
Meanwhile, a day after the melee, Leafs coach Mike Murphy was still impressed with Potvin's success in his tussle with Hextall and what it did for the Leafs.
``From what I've heard, Felix's uncles and father were the toughest guys in their town,'' Murphy said. ``Felix is such a soft-spoken guy. But he did pretty good. He stood up and threw them.
``It was really good for our team. Felix showed what a competitor he is and that it mattered to him.
``Overall, I was pretty happy with the way our team responded and stuck up for each other. In order to be a good team in this league, guys have to stick up for each other. I think sometimes (an incident like this one) can bring a club together and it can make them a better team on the ice, too.''

Potvin new king of the ring Halifax Daily News. Nov 12, 1996.
TORONTO (CP) -- While Felix Potvin and the Maple Leafs took the day off yesterday, there was no relief for Ron Hextall in the wake of his bloody fight with Potvin.
The day after the two goalies traded blows in Philadelphia, Hextall was getting ribbed by his Flyer teammates and friends, one of whom suggested he should start carrying Mace.
"Yeah maybe I can stick it in my side pocket and use it if I need it," Hextall said.
The normally mild-mannered Potvin seemed to get the best of Hextall, the reigning bad boy of NHL goaltenders.
It was front-page news with the Toronto Sun featuring a picture of Potvin about to land a right punch on Hextall. The headline read: Leafs' New Enforcer ... Felix Potvin?
"You do what you have to do," said Potvin, nicknamed the Cat.
The two goalies ripped off each other's masks and traded perhaps a dozen punches apiece. If blood separates the winner from the loser, Hextall, leaking from a cut over his left eye, did not get the decision.
"Tough weekend for me and (Mike) Tyson," he said. "Back-to-back nights, the heavyweight champs had a tough one."
The gash required stitches, though Hextall, who picked up 29 penalty minutes in the fracas, refused to say how many. Yesterday, his eyebrow was still puffy.
Hextall should have listened to his daughter.
"The last thing my daughter said to me was: `Good luck and don't fight,' " he told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
It was Potvin's first fight in the NHL, though he did have two as a rookie eight years ago in the Quebec major junior league. One was against fellow goalie Andre Racicot and another against Vancouver Canuck tough guy Gino Odjick.
As the game wound down -- the Flyers won 3-1 -- a melee erupted in the Leafs' zone. It started with Flyers tough guy Daniel Lacroix taking a run at Leafs defenceman Larry Murphy.
Potvin slashed Lacroix, then Toronto forward Wendel Clark jumped in. Hextall skated down the ice to take on Potvin.
"He slashed one of our guys and I didn't like that," said Hextall.
Hextall is infamous for a vicious two-handed slash against Kent Nilsson in the 1987 Stanley Cup final. But his most memorable moment of mayhem may have been when he chased after, then jumped, on Chris Chelios 7 1/2 years ago.
Suspensions and fines followed, as they may this time.
There were no jokes about Potvin, however.
"I won't be picking any fights with Felix," said Leafs coach Mike Murphy.

Leafs, Flyers slapped with $5,000 fines for punch-up by Paul Hunter. Toronto Star. Nov 14, 1996.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Staff) - The NHL has come out swinging over the punch-up between the Maple Leafs and the Flyers at Philadelphia last Sunday.
The league has fined both teams $5,000 for the ugly brawl that, at its zenith, saw goalie Felix Potvin exchanging uppercuts with Philadelphia counterpart Ron Hextall.
Leafs forward Tie Domi and Flyers forward Scott Daniels were also assessed $1,000 fines for a fight that started the mess.
The team fines were assessed because both teams iced their enforcers for the final few seconds of a game.
Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher said the fines were fair.
``In the league's estimation the fight started as the puck was dropped in the final seconds of a game that was already decided. They've gone on record saying they'll put an end to that nonsense,'' Fletcher said.
Hextall was not fined or suspended for skating the length of the ice and instigating a fight with Potvin.
Domi called the league's ruling ``a joke.''
``It seems like there's one set of rules for the league and another set for Tie Domi,'' he said. ``I'll pay my fine but you're telling me Hextall came all the way down the ice and didn't get fined? That sounds rather strange to me.''

Just A Minute Toronto Star. Nov 17, 1996.
To know why Ron Hextall, at 32 in his 11th NHL season, married with four children, regarded as an intelligent, personable chap by those who know him, persists in trying to create the image that he's a erratic, mental defective to be avoided on the ice, would be an interesting psychological study.
Mostly, Hextall's pale imitation of Battlin' Billy Smith, a four-time Stanley Cup winner with the New York Islanders and who, as a goaltending yahoo, always made Hextall appear like the toughest kid in the Goosey Gander Nursery School, is worn out.
His career, which appeared in a big downward slide when he had a 6.08 average for the Islanders in the '94 playoffs, was revitalized when GM Bob Clarke brought Hextall back to the Philadelphia Flyers for the '94-95 season. He was a large part of the team's rebirth over the past two seasons.
His mindless charge up the ice to fight Maple Leafs goalie Felix Potvin seems extremely dumb - a broken hand certainly would not be a career boost - is almost as dopey as his limp excuse: ``He (Potvin) slashed one of my teammates and I didn't like that.''
That from a man who repeatedly has used his goal stick as a scythe on opponents' legs throughout his career.
Potvin's demonstration of a Jekyll and Hyde makeup, the mild-mannered, soft-spoken man who turns into a killer when provoked, is the big talk of the NHL. His punching out Hextall in their one-sided bout has made The Cat a big hero to the many NHLers who have limped away from Hextall's crease.
``First time we play Toronto it's going to be difficult in the warmup not to go over and shake Potvin's hand, congratulate and thank him,'' said an NHL skater who requested anonymity because he claimed Hextall might use the stick on his head, not ankles, the next time they were close.
``When Felix threw that one-two combo and opened up Hextall's head, he became a hero to many NHL players. Hexie has this weird idea that if he lays enough lumber on ankles and calves everyone will figure he's a lunatic and stay away from him. I guarantee Felix will hear about it from guys skating past and saying thanks in every game he plays this season.''
That the men in the league's New York headquarters, who are so image conscious that any small questioning of their operation brings angry retorts, did not fine or suspend Hextall is a large puzzle.

Apr 14, 2009 11:17 ET | After re-watching this, I can see why Hextall went charging like a mad bull down the ice after Potvin. Did anyone else catch that slash Potvin gave Lacroix? He broke his stick on the guy's leg! A second after that slash, Clark grabbed Lacroix and tackled him, and then Hextall went for Potvin. So, it's not as if Hextall went after Potvin for no reason. | Reply |
