According to the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix:

It all started when Blade goaltender Ken McNabb was going to be assessed a minor penalty by referee Don Funk for slashing Brandon's Ray Allison in front of the Saskatoon goal.
Allison lay on the ice for a few seconds as the play moved out of the Saskatoon zone. When Funk finally whistled the play dead, Allison stood up, turned toward McNabb and, with a baseball swing of his stick, slashed McNabb across the chest.
Blade defenceman Doug Archibald was nearest to the scene and immediately moved in to handle Allison. Both were given major penalties and escorted to the penalty box and everything appeared to be in order.
However, Brandon defenceman Mike Perovich had possession of the puck and skated in McNabb's direction and drilled a shot at the Saskatoon goaltender.
Then, Brandon defenceman Tim Lockridge had a few words for McNabb and finally newly-acquired Wheat King Don Hobbins moved in. Blades' Wes George then fought Hobbins and everybody on the ice, except the two goaltenders, got into the act.
McNabb held his ground near the Blade goal crease until he saw team-mate Lindsay Carson in trouble in the corner and moved in to help out. That brought Brandon goaltender Brad Earp racing down the ice.
The reason McNabb moved in to help Carson was because he claimed he saw a piece of Carson's finger laying on the ice. During the scuffle, Carson's hand was apparently stepped on by a skate and his little finger on the left hand was severed at the first joint.
Funk, of Saskatoon, handed Brandon six of 11 game misconducts after the fracas. Hobbins was tabbed as the man coming off the Bandon bench. Funk overlooked giving Blades' Dan Erickson a game misconduct although Erickson was also involved in the brawl.
During the fighting, Lockridge was battling Blade defenceman Terry Johnson and tried to bash Johnson's head to the ice - an incident Funk did not see.
However, Funk was no more than five feet away and facing the pair when Lockridge attempted to knee Johnson in the head. That is an automatic match penalty, as is the first incident involving Lockridge. However, Funk chose to ignore it.
"How can you play hockey with refereeing like that," queried McLeod. "There is no rhyme or reason to it, no consistency."
Brandon coach Dun McCallum, who attacked the officials Friday after Blades scored the tying goal (3-3) after an apparent offside, said: "I am not going to talk about the officials. It obviously doesn't do any good."

And from the Brandon Sun:

The fighting broke out just after Blades goalie Ken McNabb cut down Allison in the Saskatoon crease with a slash across the ankles. Allison got up after a few seconds, swung his stick at McNabb and was soon jumped by defenceman Archibald. After that set-to finished, Brandon defenceman Mike Perovich shot the puck in McNabb's direction raising the ire of the Blades. Before long, Blades' heavyweight Wes George was fighting Hobbins.
Due to line changes, both teams had seven players on the ice and all of them eventually fought. All received game misconducts, except for Archibald and Dan Erickson of the Blades and Allison of Brandon.

After getting slashed by Blades' goalie Ken McNabb, Allison got up and took a baseball swing at McNabb, slashing him on the chest. This pretty much set off the brawl.Reply

Hobbins came off the bench and tried to get after McNabb, but was intercepted by George. Everyone else paired off from there.Reply

During the fight with McCrimmon, Carson's hand was stepped on and he lost part of the little finger on his left hand. Blades' goalie McNabb, who had stayed out of the brawl until then, saw the piece of Carson's finger on the ice and went to his aid. This brought Brandon goalie Brad Earp charging into the fray.Reply
