IslesEnforcer 183 fight reviews Apr 5, 2009 02:28 ET | James Hiebert = Public Enemy #1 in Odessa. Hiebert signed with Laredo late in the season and has made his presence felt. Hiebert has now accumulated 7 Fighting Majors in less than three weeks in the CHL, with half of them being against Odessa.
Without running through all of Hiebert's antics, the Jacks have been keeping a close eye on him, and along with Rick Kozak and Eric Lizon, the Laredo teams toughness scale is off the charts. Odessa does not have the services of Mario Joly or Marc Rechlicz so Garrett Gruenke has been busy during this playoff series.
With about 10 seconds to go, and Laredo down by a goal, the puck goes behind the Odessa net. With the clock running down, Russ Moyer decides to fall on the puck in an attempt to kill the clock and end the game. The ref blows the play dead but James Hiebert decides to throw a gloved punch at Moyer. Moyer looks surprised and shoots him a look, and Hiebert drops his gloves and starts to throw punches at Moyer. At this point a huge scrum ensues and Jacks defenseman Brian Swiniarski comes crashing through the pile and goes right after Hiebert.
Swiniarski drops his gloves and hits Hiebert against the boards. Swiniarski grabs Hiebert and they wrestle. There's another Laredo player getting involved and gets in Swiniarski's way, giving Hiebert a chance to right himself. Hiebert starts unloading punches at a fallen Swiniarski. At this point there is so much going on, the two combatants are lost in the scrum. Hiebert looks to wrestle Swiniarski down but falls on the bottom of the pile with Swiniarski sitting on top of him, throwing wild punches. The camera cuts away to another fight starting.
Sebastian Thinel is one of many Odessa players involved in the initial scrum. When a Laredo player grabs Brian Swiniarski, Thinel tries to interfere as well. Adam Rivet come in and throws Thinel to the ice. Thinel gets up and they start to skate away from the rest of the pack. Thinel is not a fighter and was clearly not looking for a fight. Rivet is throwing gloved punches at Thinel, who is holding onto Rivet's jersey but shying away. Rivet wants to fight and simply drops his gloves and starts to throw. Thinel has no choice but to drop his gloves as well. They both start off throwing a few punches but quickly tie each other up. Rivet grabs Thinel's helmet and rips it off his head. Now they are wrestling. Rivet throws four quick rights, only two connecting the side of Thinel's head before he ducks away. Thinel right's himself and they tie up again. Thinel has Rivet locked up pretty good, as you can see Rivet stop trying to throw punches and start trying to get Thinel to let go. Rivet frees his right hand and attempts another overhand punch. It may have hit but it was insignificant. The momentum of the punch drives both players against the boards and the ref gets in there quickly.
Meanwhile Swiniarski and Hiebert have been separated but find each other two more times. The ref finally gets in between them and gets Swiniarski off the ice toward the Jacks dressing room. At this point, Rick Kozak tries to follow Swiniarski to the dressing room, to fight, until he comes into contact with Mario Joly, who was scratched with an injury. Kozak decides to skate away and not get involved. While that is going on, Hiebert, who is still on the ice decides to go after Dave Van Drunen. The refs quickly extinguish that but as Thinel is led to the dressing room, Kozak and Joly start arguing in the doorway. Again the refs have to get involved, and Kozak is led away.
There is bad blood between these two teams dating back to the last game of the season. In that game James Hiebert ran Odessa goaltender and started a brawl. Hiebert ran into Garrett Gruenke three times since then. Laredo's tactics have really thrown Odessa off their game. As I said earlier, without Joly or Rechlicz to counter Laredo's three tough guys, they were getting pushed all over the ice, giving Laredo a quick 2-0 lead in this playoff series.
Unfortunately, Laredo's nonsense may have finally run its course. Odessa has won the last three games and has the momentum, while Laredo seems to be reeling. This series has been really fun to watch, and they still have at least one more game to play. | Fun 8 |

There was too much interference here to call this one either way. Swiniarski only received a double minor for roughing, while Hiebert received a slew of penalties here. |

 IslesEnforcer 183 fight reviews Apr 5, 2009 02:45 ET | Steve Weidlich clear win | Fun 3 |
Dave Van Drunen injured Darryl Smith with a questionable hit in game 4. At the end of that game, Steve Weidlich tried to get Van Drunen to fight him. Van Drunen declined because Odessa had already won the game and he didn't need to fight. More importantly, Van Drunen has stitches after getting injured and is wearing a full face shield.
Fast Forward to tonight's game. With two seconds left and a faceoff in Odessa's zone, Weidlich makes a bee-line right for Van Drunen and cross checks him down. The horn sounds and the game is over. Weidlich then decides to exact some revenge on Van Drunen and and sucker him. This brings everyone on the ice together.
Van Drunen gets up and Weidlich tackles him to the ice and starts throwing rights like crazy. With both players down on the ice, the refs try and pry Weidlich off of Van Drunen. It takes some time to get Weidlich off of him and when he finally gets up, he starts to challenge the rest of the Jacks team. When Van Drunen gets up, he is bleeding pretty bad. His stitches were most likely opened up because his forehead was covered with blood. He seemed okay though and skated off the ice without help.
I have to call this unfair simply because Van Drunen was jumped. He had no chance to fight back, and probably had no intention to fight back, given the situation he was in with the game being over, as well as his wearing a face shield. |
