The New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers have some players known for belligerence on the ice for a shift. The Rangers' renowned mega-pest Matthew Barnaby crosses paths with rookie tough guy Grant McNeill. Barnaby and McNeill bump and shove, getting their sticks up and treating each other to some facewashes with the gloves. McNeill is spoiling for a scrap, while Matt the Rat is most likely trying to goad the youngster into taking a penalty.

Barnaby's heavyweight teammate, big Chris Simon, steps in as another Florida player, Andres Lilja, also looks to get involved. McNeill sees Simon, who was having a resurgent year as one of the most dangerous fighters in the NHL, and promptly abandons Barnaby. Grant pounces on Simon with his gloves off. He is instantly swinging away with big, bare-fisted punches.

Simon was not ready. He is still trying to get rid of his stick and gloves as McNeill hammers away with rapid right hands. Grant delivers a couple good shots, lands a few glancing blows to the helmet, and misses with a few. He throws nearly a dozen punches before Simon even throws one. But when Simon finally gets set to answer, he is clearly fired up.

Simon begins to answer with left hands as McNeill continues with the rights. Simon seemed to have a bit of a reach advantage, as he somewhat locks McNeill out as he reels off the lefts. Grant falls short with a few as Simon tags McNeill with a couple good punches to the head. McNeill ducks for a second, then attempts to throw a few lefts, getting in a swiping southpaw to the forehead. McNeill then switches back to his right hand. They keep on throwing fast and furious, but then Simon unleashes a vicious straight left that nails McNeill directly in the jaw.

McNeill's helmetless head snaps around after eating that devastating left; his knees buckle and he falls forward to the ice. Simon prepares to throw punches down at his staggered opponent, which induces the officials to start to leap into the fray. The zebras were no doubt concerned Simon was about to seriously hurt McNeill.

Incredibly, McNeill rockets back to his feet and shakes off the effects of the massive punch; this makes the linesmen back off. McNeill and Simon continue to hammer away, each man connecting some more hard punches. Just before the officials start to intervene, McNeill blasts Simon with two fast, stiff haymakers to the face. Simon doesn't go down, impressively, despite getting cranked by those shots. The linesmen then succeed in separating the two warriors. McNeill and Simon look at each other for a brief moment before parting and quietly heading to the sin bins. It appeared they earned each other's respect after this fierce contest.

This was one of the best fights of the 2003-04 season, a real battle between two very tough men. The veteran Simon and the rookie McNeill both showed they could take as well as deliver some serious punishment. I think it was a well-fought draw. McNeill had an edge in quantity, while Simon had an edge in quality punches, though both men each got in some major shots.

This action-packed draw is definitely a Fight Of The Year candidate.

McNeill's first and only NHL fight and he didn't spot pick taking on Simon..

McNeill went after Barnaby, as Barnaby was being his normal self. Simon came over and McNeill dropped the mitts and started throwing. McNeill threw twelve rights before Simon's first punch. Simon finally pulled out and started unloading. McNeill tried to go toe to toe with his right but Simon landed some bombs and got him bent over. McNeill came back landing a big right. Simon came right back landing a big left of his own. They then both missed their next two punches. Simon then landed the next two bombs one snapped McNeill's head back the other dropped McNeill to a knee. McNeill got back up and they had a toe to toe with both missing a few punches and they locked up and the linesmen came in.

McNeill in his first/only NHL fight fought one of the best and lost but he did put on a show having the fight of the year. This isn't a TKO or a decisive win as McNeill got up after being dropped and then went toe to toe with Simon, the linesmen didn't have to save McNeill.

McNeill is trying to go after Barnaby but Barnaby seemed interested in the play rather than a fight. Simon comes in as Barnaby starts to push and shove with McNeill. Lilja comes in and he and Barnaby grab on as McNeill begins to throw big rights at Simon.

McNeill is landing some decent rights before Simon finally gets ready. Simon then begins to unload some massive lefts that are hitting McNeill hard. One left absolutely kills McNeill snapping his head back violently. McNeill goes down but surprisingly gets up and throws a couple more punches at a surprised Simon.

Clear win Simon, McNeill was winning early before Simon was ready but Simon came back with massive lefts, landing a whole bunch of them.

Grant McNeill's first NHL fight and it's a memorable one. McNeill takes on a very good tough guy in Chris Simon. They get a hold of each other and McNeill is very active in the early goings. McNeill throws twelve rights and lands four, his helmet comes off as he throws. Simon just takes the four rights and then opens up with the left. Simon throws five lefts and lands three as McNeill misses two rights that gets him slightly turned around. McNeill switches hands and trades with Simon. Simon throws six lefts, landing four while McNeill throws three lefts and lands two before switching hands and missing a right. That is when Simon lands a huge left that floors McNeill. Simon misses a left as McNeill falls but he bounces back to his feet to continue. They trade for a short while, Simon throwing four lefts that all miss while McNeill throws four rights and lands one. Then they wrap their arms around each other and get in tight. They wrestle but then stand back but the linesmen come in and break up the fight. McNeill stood in very well for himself. He was more active than Simon early and then when Simon started throwing, McNeill stood in there well until he got absolutely rocked by that bomb from Simon. To McNeill's credit he got right back up and continued the fight but it didn't last much longer and the linesmen soon broke it up. Great bout with Simon getting the edge, it was pretty even in terms of punches landed but Simon floored McNeill part way through the fight to get the win.

There was a lot of action in this one. Simon landed an average right. McNeill missed a blow, landed a couple of average shots, and landed a solid blow. He missed three right hands. He landed a solid blow and missed a shot. He missed a few punches and landed an average connect. He missed a couple of blows.

Chris landed an average shot and two pretty good punches. He landed a solid connect and missed a punch. He landed a solid blow and missed a shot. Grant landed an average punch and missed two lefts. He landed an average right.

Simon missed two punches and landed an average blow. He missed a punch and landed a good blow that knocked McNeill to the ice. Grant got up and landed a solid shot. He missed two punches. Chris missed a punch, landed two average blows, and missed a shot. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Simon. McNeill got off to a good start, but Simon took control during the second half of the bout and landed with better impact.

McNeill drops the gloves first and starts throwing before Simon is ready. He lands a few grazing shots early. Once Simon gets his left going, he lands some good punches. McNeill switches to the left without success and then goes back to the right just before he gets knocked to the ice by a devastating Simon left. He somehow gets up and surprises Simon with 2 very solid punches that cause him to grab on. Simon landed one of the best punches thrown in a hockey fight. Hats off to McNeill for withstanding the punch and throwing some back in turn. Awesome fight.

McNeill is roughing up Barnaby and Simon skates over. McNeill drops the gloves and fires off about 10 rights before Simon can even get ready. Simon finally gets going and throws 8 lefts, with the 8th dropping McNeill to his knees. McNeill gets back up and they trade some punches, with none landing.

What a fight and performance by McNeill even though he lost this one. The fight starts as McNeill is going after Barnaby and Simon skates in. Simon and McNeill drop the gloves and it is all McNeill in the early stages of this one. Grant is throwing and landing some decent right hand shots and seems to connect with a good one to Simon's forehead. Chris Simon starts to throw the lefts and McNeill is still throwing with the right. Simon starts to take over and is connects with a couple before nailing McNeill with a shot that probably would have sent Jason Vorhees back to the grave. It is almost unbelievable that McNeill gets up from this shot and he actually gets up pretty damn quickly as well. Grant McNeill starts to get the rights going again and Simon the lefts but both are pretty tired and they fizzle out. Simon had the left cocked as the linesmen got in there but didn't throw it.

Grant McNeill's first NHL fight. McNeill is trying to square off with Barnaby, who isn't interested in fighting. Simon comes over to McNeill and another Panther player comes in. McNeill comes away from this scrum and throws off his gloves. He grabs onto Simon and starts throwing rights to the body and side of Simon's head. Simon gets his composure and starts throwing back. Simon gets off four beautiful punches with the fourth one cracking McNeill on the cheek and dropping him. Most players would have been done there, but McNeill was game to come right back up for more and actually lands a few more on Simon's face. The linesmen come in a break this wild fight up. Both benches were pumped. Simon won this one clearly with a few real bombs and one that dropped McNeill clean, but McNeill got his licks in as well. McNeill's first fight, and it was against one of the best. McNeill amazingly skates to the box and gets a drink like nothing happened. Bombs were landed left and right in this amazing fight. Great fight.

I think Mcneil wanted to fight Barnaby but unfortunatly for him, he fought Chris Simon. Most of Mcneil's punches haven't reached the target. Chris Simon landed the better punch of the fight and Mcneil fell on the ice. I give a lot of credit to Mcneil to get up after that punch and continue to throw.

Awesome fight. I'll give Simon the W for landing the bomb, and accurately landing his lefts, while most of Grants landed to the back of the head or shoulder area.

RE,

I'm not sure how this is a TKO... look at the criteria:
1. The loser was dropped by a punch
**2. No further action**
3. It was not a KO

McNeill originally wants a piece of Barnaby but Barnaby doesn't seem so interested. Simon comes over and gives McNeill a push and McNeill drops his gloves and starts throwing punches before Simon even has his gloves off. Then Simon gets organized and starts throwing some lefts and catches McNeill with a really good one.

One of the fights of the year. McNeill got off to a good start and was landing some rights. Simon finally answered with lefts and got the better of their exchange. Simon then landed a massive left that almost took McNeill's head off and buckled him for a second. But somehow McNeill jumped immediately back up and then he tagged Simon in the face with a good right hand that actually stunned Simon. Simon stopped throwing after getting hit and put a hug on McNeill, linesmen then got in. I give a narrow win to Simon but I can see a draw as well. Some very biased reviews here, "Simon beat the shit out of McNeill" and some decisive win calls.

McNeill got the jump on Simon and was nailing him with some hard punches. However, once Simon got the jackhammer left loose it was all Simon. He was landing several hard blows on McNeill including one that almost decapitated him. I don't know how McNeill got back up, he should've been KO'ed. They both traded a few more punches before the linesmen broke them up. Clear win Simon, he landed a few more and definitely the better shots. Awesome fight.

Great fight. Shocking that McNeill got up after that punch. No one more surprised than Simon. I think Simon was simply convinced McNeill was done and let his guard down a bit. I don't think it can be anything less than a clear win for Simon, as he essentially eased up at the end because he thought he killed the kid.

Although McNeill did absorb Simon's punch here, from the reports he was KOed twice later that year. Shawn Thornton dropped him a month later but McNeill fought just a week later. But in January, he was KOed once again by Josh Gratton and missed the remainder of the season. He was also KOed in ECHL in the 05-06 which is on video.

McNeill was a tough guy, but Simon probably cracked his chin or damaged him pretty well.
