Ulf Samuelsson clear win Fun
6
This was about the best performance I've seen from Samuelsson. Thomas landed an average right. Ulf landed a solid right and a couple of average blows. Steve slipped to the ice. Ulf landed three average lefts. He went back to throwing rights again. He landed a decent punch and missed. Thomas was trying to punch back at him. Samuelsson landed a solid uppercut.

I rate this as a clear win for Samuelsson. He beat up Thomas in this one-sided fight. It was close to being decisive, but Steve was punching at the time of the stoppage. I am not convinced that he was in an entirely hopeless position.

Ulf Samuelsson narrow win Fun

Ulf Samuelsson and Steve Thomas get into it behind the play and they drop the gloves, grab onto each other's jersey, and get set. Thomas lands a right off the helmet and visor of Samuelsson. Samuelsson throws four rights and lands three to the side of the head and helmet of Thomas who leans away a little bit but ends up falling over. Samuelsson lands on top of Thomas and throws three lefts, landing one to the back of the helmet as a linesman gets in. Thomas rolls over and tries to get up as Samuelsson throws three rights and lands two, one to the head and one to the face as they try to get up but the other linesman gets there and grabs Thomas. Samuelsson is then restrained and the two are split apart. Win for Samuelsson since he landed more and better in a brief bout with Thomas.

An spectacular battle between Kevin Maguire and Shane Churla. This is perhaps the definition of toe-to-toe as both go non stop with rights throughout the fight.

For the first 7 seconds of the fight Maguire and Churla just trade right hands. Churla ends up throwing 3 more rights then Maguire to put him around 15 while Maguire threw close to 12. Most if not all of these punches landed by both men but Churla had a slight edge in punches landed up to this point.

They tire from all the throwing and grapple. Maguire lands 2 rights before taking one from Churla. Maguire then lands 3 rights to the side of Churla's head before the fight is ended by the officials.

This fight was too close to call as both men landed an equal amount of punches. This is one of the top 5 fights ever in my opinion (and plenty of others I'm sure) and is a definite classic.

This was was as good as it gets. The men traded quality punches at a blistering pace. There was as much action packed into twenty seconds of hand-to-hand combat as you will ever see. Churla and Maguire had a thrilling toe-to-toe exchange at the beginning of the contest.

Kevin landed two solid rights, missed a punch, and landed nine solid connects. Shane landed eleven solid connects and four average blows. Both were finding the target with regularity and most of the connects were flush. Kevin landed a body shot, landed an average blow, and missed a couple of punches.

Churla got a little better of the first exchange. Maguire was a little more active the rest of the way. The pace and punch output was still frantic, but the blistering pace slowed just a bit. Shane missed a punch and landed a solid connect. Maguire landed three average connects. Churla landed an average blow. Kevin missed a right. Shane went for the takedown.

I rate this fight as a draw. This was a terrific action-packed fight. The number of blows landed and the impact of the shots was pretty even. Both men ignored the incoming quality punches and dished out punishment of their own. This was a classic toe-to-toe slugfest.

Shane Churla narrow win Fun
10
Shane Churla and Kevin Maguire meet up during a stoppage in play and choose to drop the gloves. They both get their hold with the left and get their right hand pumping quickly as they exchange toe-to-toe. Churla throws twenty-two rights and lands seventeen, eight connecting cleanly while Maguire throws nineteen rights and lands twelve, six connecting cleanly. They quit throwing but then Maguire misses a right, pauses, and throws two rights, landing one. Maguire then throws two rights and connects with one as Churla connects on four rights. They pause and Maguire throws three rights, landing two before Churla misses a right. Maguire misses two rights while Churla moves in closer on Maguire who then switches hands and connects with a left. They wrestle each other to their knees and the linesmen don't hesitate to step in and split them up. A toe-to-toe slugfest between two young enforcers both of whom were just called up in the previous month. Both Churla and Maguire were unloading with rights and landed a ton of punches, most of which connected well. Churla had the slight edge in the exchange but was also more tired at the end of it. Maguire tried to get going afterwards but both were petered out from the intense exchanging and they wrestled down without much else getting going. I call it a slight win for Churla but both men deserve some credit as this was an absolutely great fight. Somewhat interestingly both of these two had similar fights on the same day, just over a week beforehand. They were each in likewise extremely entertaining fights and took on one of the best veteran heavyweights in the league with Churla standing in there in a toe-to-toe bout with Jay Miller while Maguire battled fiercely with Bob Probert.

What a battle of right hands. Churla and Maguire, to me, were two guys who didn't receive enough credit for being as tough as they were. This fight should be a part of any classic fight tape that is put together because this was non-stop action right from the opening bell. I haven't attempted a punch count yet, but there had to be at least 20+ punches landed by each guy. Way too close to even try to determine a victor (although whoever was announcing somehow concluded that Churla was getting in the better shots). The only thing I picked up on was that at the conclusion of the fight when they wrestled to ice (even that was draw) that it was Churla who was holding onto Maguire, when Maguire was the one trying to throw some more. Regardless, it would take an eagle eye or a very experienced boxing judge to determine a winner in this one (or a lot of winding and rewinding on the VCR). Awesome fight.

Incredible amount of punches thrown and landed in this fight. Both Churla and Maguire stand in there and go toe-to-toe.

They instantly come to grips with both fighters grabbing a hold of the back of each others collars. They both then pump right hands at each other from point blank range. Amazing toe-to-toe shots with both fighters landing a high proportion. They must have exchanged for a 20 punch count before Churla stopped and held on. Maguire tries to sneak in some short rights but nothing lands clearly. They then briefly let loose a small flurry of toe-to-toe shots but stop quickly. Churla tries to answer with a few short ones as well but both are in close now and nothing major happens here. They both wrestle and go down.

That initial outburst from these two was unbelievable. Both fighters got into a real face-punching duel in this one with both taking a number of shots. These two stared down the barrell of the gun and went all out. As far as toe-to-toers go, this one is one of my favorites. Those first 20 or so punches were point blank and both just stood in there and took it. God, I miss those two.

Dave Semenko narrow win Fun

After the Shane Churla and Kevin Maguire fight comes to a close, Dave Semenko squares off with Terry Johnson away from everyone else. They go into the corner and get a grip of each other with the left. Semenko misses a right and then Johnson misses three rights. They each miss a right at the same time, then Johnson lands a right. Johnson stumbles and misses a right, then Semenko connects with a right. Then they each land a right at the same time and Semenko throws two rights and lands one. Semenko gets jerseyed and Johnson misses a right, then falls to his knees. Johnson stays down and hangs on and Semenko throws three rights and connects on two. Johnson gets up and gets in tight. They wrestle and Semenko gets his jersey down from over his face. Semenko pulls Johnson's helmet back and then pulls Johnson's hair. The referees come in and Semenko lets go of the hair and the fight ends. Edge Semenko in an average fight.

Johnson and Semenko went at it in the immediate aftermath of the Churla-Maguire bout. Terry landed a body punch and a partial connect. He missed a punch and landed a solid connect. Dave missed a couple of punches and landed an average right hand.

Johnson missed a punch and landed an average connect. Semenko missed a blow, landed a pretty good shot, missed a punch, and landed a pretty good connect. Terry slipped to the ice and hung on. Semenko's jersey came up over his eyes. He landed a couple of decent blows before the refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Semenko. Dave landed the better punches, but Terry performed pretty well in the opening stages to keep the contest reasonably close.

This was an undercard fight to the spectacular toe-to-toe slugfest between Kevin Maguire and Shane Churla (even though it occurred afterward). They square off for a few moments, and after a few attempts, come together. Semenko lands a right while Johnson misses with a few rights. They each connect with a right hand and Johnson lands a followup. Johnson stumbles and misses with a right, taking a right in the process. Both men land a punch simultaneously. Semenko connects with two more blows before having the jersey pulled up over his head. Johnson slips to his knees and Semenko throws two blind rights, hitting Johnson in the back. Johnson gets up and Semenko misses with a right. Semenko is able to pull the jersey back down and he gets Johnson's helmet off but the linesmen move in.

Semenko connected with more punches to earn the narrow win in the fight.

Square off, and Johnson looks scared to battle with Semenko. Johnson manages to land a wild right, but is almost falling over on his skates, allowing Semenko to take over with a big right hand. Semenko pounds Johnson to a knee, and both jerseys are obstructing the fighters' vision. Semenko throws a couple more while Johnson is down, Johnson finally gets up and pins Semenko to the boards.

Semenko jabs a couple of times at Johnson who then plunges forward and goes on the offensive. Had Johnson been more stable on his skates then he might have done even better. Johnson throw rights at Semenko who backs up a little before he answers back with rights on his own. Johnson eventually goes down on his knees with his jersey over his head. Semenko also ends up with his jersey over the head. Semenko punches Johnson while he's down. Johnson gets up and they just hold on to each other until the refs come in.

They both set up & square off in open ice. Johnson's fighting form when setting up looked very good but it didn't help him because he never landed a facialpunch while at best , he may have landed 1 marginal headpunch in an open swingout. This is in contrast to Semenko who landed 1 good facialpunch followed by another overhanded facialpunch which was then followed up by an uppercut. This was all together mixed in with a couple of helmetpunches thrown by Semenko. I'm not sure if the helmetpunches had any effect. Johnson also was pushed down to his knees during the fracas and then got back up to resume the fight. It ends when Johnson & Semenko are up against the boards while Semenko is attempting to knuckle-brush the face of Johnson while the refs were getting involved. Clear win for Semenko.
