A skirmish breaks out between the Adams Division rivals, the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens after a penalty is called on Craig Ludwig. Ludwig mixes it up with Mike Foligno and everyone gathers around, including sophomore defenseman Steve Dykstra and veteran tough guy Chris Nilan. The network goes to commercial but during the commercial break, Nilan and Dykstra begin to fight.

When the camera picks up the action, Dykstra has lost his helmet and Nilan lands two rights to the back of his head. Nilan lands a weak punch while Dykstra comes up short with a right as Nilan has his right arm tied up. Knuckles lands four more short rights while Dykstra lands a weak punch to the side of Nilan's helmet. They grapple and both men are clearly tired. Nilan lands two more blows as they go up against the boards. Dykstra falls to the ice, which brings the officials in.

Based on the footage seen, Nilan was in clear control as he landed all of the punches. However, the commentators mentioned that the fight had already gone on for a minute and a half to two minutes, meaning that we missed most of the action. Since the footage of the fight is incomplete and we only see the tail end of it, I'm not going to render a verdict here. If I had to guess, I'd wager that Nilan came out on top. He was the more experienced of the two and was doing very well at the end of the scrap whereas Dysktra was mostly holding on.
