Bryan Trottier grabs hold of Steve Patrick behind the net as they battle for the puck. Play goes up the ice but Trottier has Patrick in a headlock and doesn't let go. Patrick then drops the gloves and gets loose as Trottier goes down but Patrick just ends up falling down too. The linesmen rush in to break it up but Trottier's teammates get in too. Paul Boutilier is kept back by Steve Richmond while Duane Sutter grabs James Patrick from behind. Clark Gillies also gets in too, grabbing Steve Patrick from behind. James Patrick turns to face Sutter and they drop the gloves. Meanwhile Tomas Sandstrom drags Gillies to the ice and away from Steve Patrick. Sutter goes down on top of James Patrick with Richmond trying to pull Sutter away despite being held from behind by Boutilier. The linesmen get Trottier and Steve Patrick apart but they jaw at each other before being escorted away. The linesmen break up the pile in the crease but as things settle, Sandstrom initiates some jousting with Gillies. Gillies goes back at Sandstrom and that brings Richmond in. Richmond and Gillies step out of the crowd and square off. The fight is completely uneventful as Richmond just hangs on and tries to take Gillies down. They wind up just wrestling until Gillies gets Richmond down. Sutter wades in on the fight and then grabs at James Patrick, Sandstrom grabs Sutter though and they wind up moving away from the fight while Boutilier steps in and grabs hold of James Patrick. Gillies and Richmond get up and James Patrick grabs at Gillies, getting Boutilier to come in to try to pull James Patrick away. John Vanbiesbrouck meanwhile steps in on Sutter and Sandstrom and has some words for Sutter after a linesman gets Sutter and Sandstrom apart. Vanbiesbrouck drops his gloves and misses a punch at Sutter as Sandstrom gets back in and grabs Sutter again. That sparks Kelly Hrudey to come down the ice and go after Vanbiesbrouck. Hrudey gets a few punches off but then they just wrestle and a linesman comes in to make sure nothing more happens. Sutter then tries to get back to Vanbiesbrouck but is still paired off with Sandstrom. Sutter has some words with Vanbiesbrouck and then jerseys Sandstrom. Sandstrom just covers up and James Patrick tries to get in to help Sandstrom but is held back by Boutilier. Sutter lets up but at the New York Rangers' bench, George McPhee opens the door and gets ready to leave, dropping his gloves. A few other Rangers' players are right behind McPhee but Sutter lets go of Sandstrom and a linesman comes by to get Sutter off the ice. Sutter and James Patrick jaw with each other but nothing else happens so the brawl finishes there. A long brawl with plenty of action but unfortunately, none of the fights got going and all were almost completely uneventful. Fun

This altercation sparks the brawl. Trottier gets hold of Patrick and wouldn't let go for a long time. Patrick then loses his patience, gets Trottier down to the ice and holds him there until the linesmen get them separated, which wasn't difficult.

All players on the ice join in after an altercation between Steve Patrick and Bryan Trottier. The officials separate them but a bunch of other players wind up in a big pile on the ice. Clark Gillies gets up first and Steve Richmond gets up too and then shoves Gillies. They move away from the rest of the players and square each other up. Duane Sutter almost gets involved but he is held back by Tomas Sandstrom. Gillies then lunges in, missing a right while Richmond ducks and they grab hold of each other. They wrestle and Richmond immediately reaches for Gillies' leg to try to take him down. Gillies stays up for a while but eventually drops to the ice, bringing Richmond down too. Gillies stays on top of Richmond while they're down and after a short time, gets back up. Richmond remains ducking as some pushing and shoving breaks out again between some other players. Gillies and Richmond wrestle more and then Patrick grabs Gillies from behind while a linesman works on separating Richmond and Gillies. Paul Botilier tries to wrestle Patrick away but Patrick breaks Gillies' jersey in the back before letting go as the linesman successfully splits up Richmond from Gillies. An extremely boring fight. It was a long one but there was only a single punch thrown and it was a missing right from Gillies just before they came together. The rest of the fight was just wrestling as Richmond just ducked and clung onto Gillies throughout the fight.

Richmond dropped the gloves, but he looked petrified to go with Gillies. He backpedaled continually and looked over his shoulder a couple of times. Finally, Clark trapped him against the boards. Gillies missed with a right hand and Steve ducked the blow. Richmond tried to grab Clark's lower torso. He wanted to take him down with a wrestling move. Gillies realized Steve was not going to fight back and he leaned heavily on his shoulders until they fell to the ice.

This was a terrible fight and a disgraceful effort by Richmond. The Rangers announcers lauded him for having the guts to take on Gillies, but to me there was not the slightest bit of courage demonstrated. Steve was looking to get out of this fight and was not interested in trading blows with Jethro. I'd love to give Gillies the win here, but he did not land a punch and it has to be regarded as a draw.

During a big scrum these two drop the gloves and square off. Gillies has a helmet on in this fight and they square off for a while. When they do come together, it's a hugfest. They hold on to each other and fall down. They then get back up and a linesman gets in there. They still push at each other as chaos reigns around them and the goalies start to go at it. A second linesman gets in and ends the issue. Draw.

There is a big-time set-up with a long dance, then Gillies throws a big right hand. Richmond ducks the punch and Gillies gets him hunched over. They spend the rest of the fight like that. At one point Gillies forces Richmond to his knees; Richmond then gets back to his feet, still hunched over. The farce continues until D'Amico extracts Richmond and shoves him away and against the boards.

Kelly Hrudey narrow win Fun

John Vanbiesbrouck jaws with Duane Sutter in the brawl after Sutter has been broken up from Tomas Sandstrom. Sandstrom grabs hold of Sutter again so Vanbiesbrouck, who's gotten his blocker and trapper off, throws a right that misses Sutter. Kelly Hrudey notices and rushes down the ice after Vanbiesbrouck. Hrudey loses his trapper and blocker on his way and rushes right into Vanbiesbrouck. They grab on and Hrudey pushes Vanbiesbrouck's mask back and lands a right to the cage. Vanbiesbrouck gets bent over and as he straightens himself, his mask comes off. Vanbiesbrouck gets in tight and buries his head into Hrudey's chest, shoving him against the boards. Hrudey throws two rights and lands one to the top of the head as they wrestle. Hrudey then tries to jersey Vanbiesbrouck but can't get the jersey over his head as they move away from the boards. They then stop wrestling and a linesman comes by to make sure nothing more happens. Hrudey and Vanbiesbrouck break up and then Sutter goes back at Vanbiesbrouck and they resume jawing at each other. Not a good fight between the two goalies. Hrudey threw the only punches and gets the edge but nothing really got going.

Kelly Hrudey clear win Fun

Because the brawl takes place around the Rangers net, Vanbiesbrouck is in the middle of it and even takes a swing at Duane Sutter. Kelly Hrudey at the other end already got spanked for 7 goals and has little to lose. He charges Vanbiesbrouck like a mad buffalo. He punches him on the mask with his right hand, then takes it off with his left. Vanbiesbrouck tries to tie up Hrudey and does. Hrudey still gets a couple of right hands in, and they then wrestle until Andy Van Hellemond separates them. Only then does Hrudey takes off his mask and starts yapping at Vanbiesbrouck until a linesman pushes him away from the rest of the brawl.

The Beezer was lucky Hrudey was in. I saw Smitty on the bench licking his chops to get in on it. Smitty would've crippled Vanbiesbrouck had he been in the game.Reply

Duane Sutter decisive win Fun
N/A
Sandstrom ends up paired off with Sutter during the brawl and luckily for him, Sutter looks for someone better to take on. Unfortunately for Sandstrom, he doesn't find anyone. Predictably, Sutter then decides to give it to Sandstrom who immediately turtles. The camera then pans away from them and the moment it returns to the action, Sutter is being ushered off by a linesman while Sandstrom leaves down the runway with blood on his face. No prizes for guessing what took place in between.
