This was one of the most brutal plays in NHL history. Randy Holt played without a conscience and was one of the most dangerous players in the history of professional hockey. There is some footage of this event posted on Veoh. MacMillan had the puck and was rushing up the ice. Holt was impeding him with the stick up high around the upper torso. MacMillan was angry and uncharacteristically turned and gave Holt a slash on the shoulder.

The video posted was doctored a bit so that the actual moment the stick hit the eye was not seen. You could see the live feed where it looked like MacMillan was shot when he went down. You could see the tense moment right before the blow landed where it appeared that Holt was lining up the harpoon and was about to ram it in MacMillan's eye.

This was a dastardly play. Holt deliberately rammed his stick in MacMillan's eye socket. Amazingly, the blow didn't blind Bob. There are a number of occasions where a guy lost vision from an unintentional blow from a stick. I will never forget how Bryan Berard's career was never the same after a guy followed through with a shot. Bernie Parent's career ended abruptly in a similar manner. I remember when Berard joined the Bruins. You could see the close-up pictures of him in promos and it was painfully obvious that he was disfigured by unintentional contact with a stick.

Atlanta's game announcers Jiggs McDonald and Skip Carey were fuming on air. They had the following quotes: "Someone should go after Holt!" "He should be banned from this game for life." "Mac is one of the nicest guys you could ask to meet." "They should throw him right out of the league."

The Kings fans at the Forum turned on Holt and booed him mercilessly. Holt flipped off the Los Angeles faithful. Carey quipped that the gesture indicated how many goals the Kings had at the time. The Kings broadcasters weren't charitable in their analysis either. Bob Miller described the reaction to the brutal stick work in his book "Tales from the Los Angeles Kings".

MacMillan was a terrific player who was in his prime. He was known as "Mac the Knife." He had a couple of seasons with the Minnesota Fighting Saints. He improved as a player with the St. Louis Blues. He hit his stride with the Atlanta Flames. He played on a line with the talented Guy Chouinard. Bob scored 31 goals in 51 games his first year with the club. He won the Lady Byng Trophy by scoring 37 goals and 108 points in 1978-79. He was a gentlemanly player with only 14 penalty minutes.

Amazingly, MacMillan walked away without a life-altering injury. The blade must have missed doing incredible damage by millimeters. He was traded with Don Lever for the great Lanny McDonald. He had a couple of seasons with the New Jersey Devils. He retired in 1985 after a severe shoulder injury.

MacMillan was a terrific player in his prime. He was a great puck handler with a good shot and the ability to set up teammates with brilliant passes. The game of hockey would have been robbed if Holt ended his career. It wouldn't have bothered Holt at all. He was a sociopath on the ice who lacked a conscience.

One of the worst cheap shots you will ever see. Holt came up from behind and blasted MacMillan in the right eye with his stick. The HOME crowd in Los Angeles booed Holt as he was ejected from the game, prompting Holt to give them the freeway salute on his way out.

Longtime Kings announcer Bob Miller wrote about the incident in his book "Tales from The Los Angeles Kings" :

"After the game Kings general manager George Maguire said to me "Randy Holt wants to see you in my office, and bring your tape recorder"
In Maguire's office Holt looked at me and said "Do you consider yourself part of this team?"
"Yes"
"Then why would you say on the air that I should be banned from the NHL for life?"
"I didn't say that"
"My wife told me that's what you said"
Maguire told me to replay the tape recording of my play-by-play of the incident..and of course nothing was on the tape because I didn't say anything of the sort. Maguire then told Holt to get out of his office...I later found out that it was the Atlanta announcer, Jiggs McDonald who had said it (on air) ""

--you can clearly hear SKIP CAREY doing the color. His comment was"is holt still in the game?", sarcasm.i guess he wanted the flames to be given a goal, rt away, before, going on the 5 min power play..

--- a baseball announcer, let alone a guy who never played a sport in his life, shouldn't be allowed to comment on a sport, he knew nothing about..but i guess his daddy, Harry, got him this job too.. and what about the 3rd generation no talent announcer(harry's grandson)??

First of all, there are a possible 4 different feeds for this game... Kings TV, Flames TV, Kings Radio and Flames radio... so, if you were attempting to correct Miller's story through me, you obviously didn't take that into consideration. The available clip of this game is just one of the 4 possible audio feeds. Jiggs McDonald was the announcer for the Flames.

What should he have said?

Spearing a guy in the face is not a normal or acceptable part of Hockey, Especially when it is done on purpose without provocation. Holt suckered MacMillan with an unbelievable, disgusting cheap shot and you are upset because the announcer was a baseball guy??? You think it would have made much of a difference? Jiggs McDonald was certainly a "hockey' guy through and through and on his feed of this same game he was disgusted enough to say Holt should be banned for life.

i respect your opinion. I thought jiggs the pig, 1st reaction was AWESOME!!!The flames should have went after holt. But, i know from hockey insiders, that the atla. flames, where a big 'soft team.It changed when they moved to calgary, and had to fight the oiler goons.

But, the all of a sudden JIGGS BACK tracks, his assertion, that the flames should get holt)(I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SEEN THAT/BUT LIKE I SAID ATA. FLAMES. WHERE KNOWN AS BUNCH OF WIMPS), and Skip Carey, backs him up(I believe it was SKIP CAREY, based on all those yrs of hearing him doing 'braves' baseball games when they where shown on tbs).

--maybe am just mad at jiggs the pig, having to suffer thru him, doing nyi games, or that clip of him saying fighting should be banned. Then after he yelled during the POTVIN-HEXTALL FIGHT, THAT IT WASN'T GOOD. The FOLLOWING SEASON, HE WAS YELLING DURING LEAF FIGHTS(was he told by leaf brass to be pro-fighting?), how great they where. He never said once as an nyi announcer that punches even landed.
---JIGGS IS A HORRIBLE EVERYTHING. HE WAS AWLFUL AS PR MAN/ANNOUNCER IN LA,an announcer w/ atlanta, nyi, tor, &fla. I hate it when they bring him back to do nyi games, when HOWIE ROSE is doing mets games.
--skip carey was good as a baseball announcer.
cheers

Cheers, fair enough

I was simply saying that the appropriate reaction to Holt's action would seem to be outrage, regardless of who is saying it, you know?

The video can be seen on Veoh. The actual moment where the stick got in the eye isn't shown, but there is enough footage to make this a very compelling thing to witness.

This video shows the replay where you see Holt clubbing MacMillian. Holt was one of the craziest players ever. He would do just about anything and tried to hurt players a number of times. That said he was involved in some great fights vs top fighters and he could flat out fight.
