strange one. Camera gets there and Bathe has Butler on a knee and pinned against the boards. Bathe hits him with a couple halfhearted uppercuts, and Butler stands up. Bathe continues to uppercut and all of a sudden Butler explodes with 5 or 6 meaningful shots, but doesn't really land anything clean.

Dave "Tiger" Williams narrow win Fun
5
Bridgman and Williams fought this bout at close quarters. Mel landed a solid right hand right at the start of the fight. Tiger established a solid grip with both hands on the jersey directly behind Mel's neck. This slowed Mel's offensive production temporarily to a crawl.

Williams missed with a left. Bridgman missed with a right. Tiger landed a solid right hook and missed with a couple of follow up blows. Bridgman missed with a couple of rights. Tiger landed a solid right hook. He landed a couple decent follow up blows and a partial connect. Mel responded with a right to the body.

There was some extra-curricular activity in this one. Tiger threw several right hands over the zebras. He missed a few and appeared to connect with a couple of partial connects. Bridgman got a few rights off. He may have landed a grazing blow or two. None of these shots shot count in the scoring because there were two officials in the way the whole time.

I rate this as a narrow win for Williams. Bridgman started out well and landed a solid right. Tiger was able to neutralize Mel's dangerous right hand the rest of the way. Williams landed a couple of solid blows and a couple of decent connects. He did a better job of finding the target in the infighting. I think he did a clever job of tying up Mel's right arm. As a result, he outboxed Bridgman, landed a few more blows in the fray, and scored with enough pop to earn the upset victory.

When the linesmen step and have Bridgeman tied up Williams gets some rights in... i still give it a draw considering it was the fault of the linesmen and obviously unfair...

The actual fight before the refs came in, was just a hug-in when we see Williams getting 1 close-in uppercut + 2 close-in sidearm punches. Bridgman managed to get 2 close-in punches also. Draw.

The entertaining part of this fight happens immediately after the refs mix in: Bridgman decides to grind his knuckles into the face of Williams since Williams kept hugging-in close to him during the fight so that there would not be an open swingout. After Bridgman knuckles his face, Williams starts throwing punches over the refs that made contact with Bridgman's face.

The Philadelphia Flyers were still the gold standard other teams were judged by when it came to fighting in the NHL. The club had several excellent fighters and was not afraid to use tactics of intimidation. The Vancouver Canucks were one of the toughest teams out west. This team had several good fighters who were not afraid to go with anyone. The Flyers and Canucks produced a classic brawl in a matchup between the toughest team in the east and the toughest team out west.

The game was physical and featured several fights even before the brawl broke out. Tiger Williams was always looking to set the tone with his swashbuckling style of play. He got into fights with Paul Holmgren and Mel Bridgman. Jerry Butler went at it with Frank Bathe in another scrap. These bouts were relatively uneventful and indecisive.

The game got really chippy in the third period. Mel Bridgman started to rough up the star Vancouver center Thomas Gradin. Gradin was a brilliant playmaker who was gritty, but he was no match for the experienced fighter Bridgman. Curt Fraser was a match for Mel and busted him up with a good shot that drew some blood. Mike Busniuk had one of his boring wrestling matches with John Hughes. This was the calm before the upcoming storm.

Hostilities flared and passions escalated when Bob Dailey cross-checked a Canuck in the back in front of the Flyers net. Jere Gillis took exception and gave Dailey a shove. Bob was in a fighting mood and he responded with a hard shove of his own. Gillis quickly lost his balance and Dailey landed a couple of pretty good left hands. Kevin McCarthy tried to bail out Gillis. He threw a left hand at Dailey that appeared to miss. Goalie Phil Myre grabbed McCarthy from behind. Soon, all of the guys on the ice at the time were pushing and shoving.

The cameras went to a beautiful shot of players leaving the respective benches. A full-scale bench-clearer was on. Both teams had the better fighters squaring off with tough guys of equal caliber in the early stages of the brawl. Jack McIlhargey and Curt Fraser just held each other. Paul Holmgren and Harold Snepsts jawed at each other and did some vigorous wrestling, but no punches were thrown.

The goaltenders were at the forefront of the early action of the brawl. Pete Peeters and Gary Bromley did some shoving and wrestling. Phil Myre got into it with Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy was able to remove Myre's mask. He missed with a left hand and the two held and wrestled for an extended period of time. Kevin appeared to land a partial connect with a left hand.

Ken Linseman and Thomas Gradin had a hold of each other. It was mostly wrestling between these two. Goalie Glen Hanlon came over to grab Linseman and the Flyers were concerned with the two-on-one situation. Bobby Clarke tried to grab Hanlon, but he was held off by a Canuck. At this point, three Flyers left the penalty box to join the brawl.

Mel Bridgman got involved in the scrap by throwing Lars Lindgren to the ice. He got on top of him and shoved a forearm in his face. Mel was one of the most dangerous and exciting guys in a bench-clearing situation. He was like a Molotov Cocktail on the ice looking for someone to hurt. Things always seemed to reach a fever pitch whenever he got involved.

Stan Smyl and Frank Bathe traded head butts. Bathe landed a pretty good right hand. Smyl countered with a few punches of his own. It was hard to tell if any of them landed. Myre and Hanlon squared off for the next bout. Ironically, a Canuck was kept from interfering by Reggie Leach. Reggie's actions insured that the fight happened. Myre was not the beneficiary at all despite Leach's good intentions.

Mel Bridgman squared off with Dave Logan. He landed a pretty good left hand. Then, the cameras shifted to the goalie fight that finally got underway. It was all in Hanlon in the bout. Glen landed a series of left and rights. Several of his blows were solid connects. He landed a hard uppercut that dumped Myre to the ice. Hanlon was looking to continue to pound Phil, but players came over to interfere and break up the bout.

The brawl continued for quite awhile despite the fact that several combatants looked exhausted. There were several wrestling matches in Holmgren-Snepsts, Linseman-Gradin, and Kelly-Williams. Mel Bridgman once again rekindled the fire by pounding Dave Logan. He nailed Logan with several left hands. This was a one-sided mauling. Logan was lucky that Bridgman was starting to get arm weary when the officials stepped in to break up the bout. This pretty much ended the wild brawl.

This was an excellent bench-clearing brawl. Both teams had good moments. Hanlon beat up Myre in an exciting goalie fight. Mel Bridgman once again proved he was the "King of the Bench-Clearers" in this brawl. Mel performed well in these situations again and again over the years putting beatings on Borje Salming, Gerry Hart, Mark Heaslip, Frank Beaton, and Logan. Bridgman flew under the radar of the elite heavyweights. He usually grabbed a middleweight and beat the stuffing out of him.

The Canucks represented the west well in the battle against the Broad Street Bullies, the kings of the east. The brawl was about even when you add up the aggregate punches between both teams. Vancouver did not back down and earned respect from the Flyer tough guys. The Kings also had some good performances in brawls against the Flyers in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The Flyers got into some wild west shootouts at the OK Corral during these years. These were some pretty even and thrilling battles.

8 Canucks and 7 Flyers were ejected.

The Flyers were fined $5,000. Coach Pat Quinn was suspended for 3 games and fined $1,000 for signaling 3 of his players out of the penalty box (Flyers were outnumbered on the ice at the time). Frank Bathe was suspended for 2 games for being the first off the bench.

During the brawl, Peeters and Bromley wrestle each other to the ice with Peeters landing on top. The clip I have doesn't show any punches being thrown but Peeters was known for being as tough as his Flyers mates so I wouldn't doubt that he threw some before the cameras got there or after they left. This happened as the benches were emptying. I give it a fun rating of a 4 only because the players involved are goaltenders. Fun

Glen Hanlon decisive win Fun
7
The fight between Glen Hanlon and Phil Myre was one of the highlights of the bench-clearing brawl between the Flyers and the Canucks. Hanlon got Phil bent over with a good grip with his right hand on Myre's jersey. Glen started to fire away with left hands while yanking Myre down with his right.

Hanlon missed with his first left. He followed with a good left hook. Then, he landed a couple of decent lefts. Glen switched to the right hand and landed four pretty good shots. Hanlon switched back to the left again and missed a shot. At this point, Myre looked like he just wanted to hold until the bout was stopped.

Help was not forthcoming from the officials or other players because several guys were already squared off and the refs were occupied. Glen landed a decent right hook. Then, he landed a hard uppercut and Phil slumped to the ice. At this point, other players took notice and got involved to break up the mismatch.

This was a decisive win for Hanlon. He dominated the fight and Myre did nothing but hold. Glen landed a hard uppercut at the end of the fight, but he looked like he pulled down Phil with his right hand to get him to the ice. I don't think this was a TKO. This was an impressive performance by the fiesty red-headed goalie. It was fun watching Glen during this brawl. He really got animated. He bears a striking resemblance to Sig Hansen, the captain of the Northwestern on the television show "The Deadliest Catch."

I'm gonna call this one a TKO. Hanlon is feeding Myre the uppercuts, switching hands, and the fight ends when Hanlon definitely lands one that puts Myre down.

Because Myre's whole head is covered, it's really hard to tell if the punch actually DROPPED him, or if he was just being a wuss and dropped to the ice on his own free will to avoid any further punches. Either way, Hanlon lands a punch, Myre goes down= TKO.

Hanlon (the backup in the game) and Myre had been holding on to each other for some time before Hanlon started punching Myre. Hanlon used a nice variety of shots, lefts, rights and uppercuts and it did seem that he dropped Myre with a solid right uppercut. Before that Myre had a go with McCarthy and the other goalies Peeters and Bromley were at it as well. (Peeters wrestling Bromley to the ice).

Myre is obviously not the brawling type since he lets hanlon do a number on him which needed the flyers rescue-try afterwards. Hanlon threw a few periodic connected punches while the camera was switching back -n- forth because of all the other scattered fights & tussles. Not a tko since it wasn't a punch to the face that sends myre to the ice but rather a force-down punch on the top of myre's head that pushed him down to the ice.

Mel Bridgman decisive win Fun
7
After the Glen Hanlon pummeling of Phil Myre, the Flyers were looking for some payback. Mel Bridgman was in his fighting prime and had several impressive victories in the 1979-80 season. He grabbed hold of Dave Logan and immediately started to dominate in this bout.

Bridgman was good at establishing a grip and neutralizing the best weapon of his opponent. He had a firm hold of Dave's right arm. Logan tried to fire back with a couple of right hands, but he could not. Mel started to pot shot Dave with his left. Mel landed four good left hands in a row. He was landing flush punches that did some damage.

Mel missed with his next punch. Then, he landed a partial connect. He landed another good uppercut. Then, he landed two hard left hooks. Dave missed with a left hand. Bridgman continued to tee off and landed a couple more hard left hooks. Mel landed a final decent blow and the officials mercifully stopped the fight.

I rate this as a decisive win for Bridgman. Mel landed several good power shots with his left hand. He really put some hurt on Logan. Dave got nailed with a series of unanswered punches. He was in bad shape when the bout was stopped. The announcer was right on when he said, "This has to be the mismatch of the year." He also stated, "Someone has to help him before this guy gets killed." This was a very impressive win by Bridgman. He just battered Logan into submission.

oh man was this ever a 1 sided beating. I counted 11 hard unanswered shots by Bridgman. They were slow, he didn't fire away non stop. He loaded up each time and just clobbered him. A few got in real hard, but Logan was burying his head to try not to get hit too clean.

The only argument against this being a decisive win is that nobody ever came to the aid of Logan as they should have. But Logan was basically in a hopeless situation the whole time.

This was brutal. I think the announcer says it best "That's got to be the mismatch of the year"

Mel Bridgman decisive win Fun
N/A
Camera winds up focusing on this one-sided fight during the brawl. Bridgman literally murders Logan with many, many unanswered facial-punches while Logan stood still like a statue. Logan didnt seem to try and pull away from Bridgman, so maybe Logan was winded? Bridgman was winded himself even though his arms must have felt like lead weights while throwing his punches. This was easily a decisive win for Bridgman because the ref then finally asks Bridgman to end the beating and Bridgman complys because he's out of gas. So, it's a rescue of Logan even though the ref didnt physically intervene during the ref's verbal request.

Gillis and Busniuk emerged from the crowd of players while having a good grip of each other. Gillis landed a nice right but Busniuk threw more punches, mostly to the back of the head. No damage done in this one.
