Dunc Wilson was one of the toughest goalies in the NHL in the 1970's. He often got involved in scraps on the ice. On this occasion, he got involved in a wild melee with Bob Nystrom and Garry Howatt. It is difficult to determine exactly what precipiated this altercation based on the footage available of the incident. Wilson appeared to get his stick high at the beginning of the tape and he may have clipped an Islander player here.

The cameras follow Nystrom and Wilson preparing to swap blows. Wilson appeared to land a partial connect in the beginning of the bout. Nystrom was looking to throw a left hand. Dunc missed with his next right hand. Nick Beverley interfered right away and pushed Nystrom into the net. Bobby was immobilized for a second and Dunc took advantage by landing a good right hand. Garry Howatt jumped on Beverley's back and hauled him down to the ice. Nystrom still had his right glove on and shook it off. Bobby missed with a right hand. Wilson missed with a final right hand and fell on top of Nystrom.

I rate this as a narrow win for Wilson. He landed a good right hand that landed flush. However, I think this fight should be considered unfair because Nick Beverley had Bobby pinned in front of the net while Dunc whacked him with the good shot. Nystrom really never got a chance to fire back and I don't think he should be tagged with the loss here.

The Rangers got the worst of this melee from an injury standpoint. Beverley got a concussion during the heated scrum. Wilson hurt his hand and had to be replaced. This was an intriguing event, but the fight itself was short and disappointing.

These two shove and start throwing gloved punches toe2toe, Nystroms gloves slowly come off witht he punches and a scrum starts as Ranger players want to get to the scrum, Nystroms feet get caught in the scrum as these two are throwing and missing most of there punches and Nystrom starts to fall allowing Wilson to land 2 solid punches on Nystrom's way to the ice.

Dunc Wilson go the better of Nystrom mainly because Nystrom wasn't in any good position to throw any punches. He was pinched in against the goal and Wilson landed a pair of nice rights, injuring his thumb in the process. Nick Beverley came in to aid Wilson but was jumped from behind by Gary Howatt who threw him to the ice. Beverley hit his head on the ice and was injured on the play.

Nystrom and Wilson come together in front of the Ranger crease. As they each throw a punch Nick Beverly jumps Nystrom as a third man in and allows Wilson to land a free shot or two, before Beverly was peeled off Nystrom by the oncoming Garry Howatt. In my opinion, each player landed one punch before it became a two against one confrontation. Therefore, I'd call this match a draw.

Nick Beveley jumped in to save his goalie and ended up leaving the ice with a concussion when his head hit the ice.Dunc Wilson left the game with a badly sprained thumb from hitting Nystrom in the back of the head.Davidson came in,was rusty from being out with a broken leg and proceeded to give up 4 3rd period goals in about 9 minutes and the Isles won after being behind most of the night.Reply
