whlfan Apr 30, 2011 00:12 ET | According to the Montreal Gazette:
The Canadiens were in the midst of doing a great penalty-killing job, making use of a delayed penalty to Cliff Koroll when the fireworks started. Yvan Cournoyer, claiming he had been shafted by Lou Angotti, struck a fighting pose to take on the Hawk winger who surprised him with a low tackle. During the scrap players of both teams chose partners. Suddenly, Koroll, tied up by Frank Mahovlich, went down like he was belted by Muhammad Ali. Everyone figured Koroll, a six-footer like Frank, had insulted the new Montreal star's heritage. "We were just holding each other and had agreed to let go," Frank explained afterward. "But when I did, he grabbed me again. That's when I let him have it. He went out like a light." Mahovlich wasn't exaggerating about the punch, which sent Koroll to the sidelines for the rest of the game. Koroll, with a lump on the side of his jaw, admitted as much. "It was a hell of a punch. I was woozy and hardly remember going to the penalty box. I never expected anything like this from Frank Mahovlich. You never know who to trust." | Reply |
