Don Awrey clear win Fun
3
I saw this fight on Volume 2 of the Old Canucks Fights footage. Awrey and Richard Lemieux (the older brother of Super Mario) were shoving each other after the whistle. Schmautz grabbed Awrey and Garnet "Ace" Bailey started pushing and shoving with Lemieux.

Awrey was quick on the draw and popped Schmautz in the face with a pretty good right hand. Bobby was trying to respond, but the refs stepped in. It didn't appear that any further punches landed.

I rate this as a clear win for Awrey. He only landed one blow, but it was a powerful shot. He put some hurt on Schmautz. Bobby was the victim of a little bad luck as the refs stepped in right away. Still, I don't think the fight should be regarded as being unfair. Schmautz grabbed Awrey to start the trouble. The men were facing each other and Don was just quicker on the draw. You needed to be in those days when the refs often stopped fights very quickly. Both men surely understood the terms of engagement.

Wayne Maki decisive win Fun
6
Wayne Maki was hated by the Bruins for fracturing the skull of Ted Green in one of the worst stick fights in NHL history on September 21, 1969. Maki was a member of the Vancouver Canucks in 1972. He had developed into a good NHL forward. He had two consecutive seasons with more than 20 goals.

Gerry Cheevers was a tough goalie who was not afraid to whack guys who entered his crease. Maki could be out of control when he was enraged. He went completely bonkers after tangling with Cheevers in front of the Boston net.

Maki hauled Gerry to the ice. He threw five consecutive punches at him. Wayne landed all his blows except the third shot in the sequence. Punches one, four, and five were decent shots. The second punch was a hard shot that landed with good leverage.

Cheevers was in a helpless position. He was flat on his back. He was fortunate that his goalie mask was still on. He still felt the effects of these punches. Some of Gerry's teammates came in and bailed him out. They broke up the fight and pulled Wayne off of him.

I rate this as a decisive win for Maki. He had Cheevers in a bad position on the ice. Wayne landed a series of shots and could have really hurt Gerry if the Bruins were not quick to intervene. Cheevers famously put scars on his goalie mask with black marker to show where a puck would have caused damage in his mask wasn't there to protect him. I wonder if he was tempted to put a scar where Maki clocked him in the face. Cheevers would have likely been a bloody mess after that bout.

Maki went completely beserk when he got mad on the ice. Most of the time, he concentrated on improving his game. He didn't rack up that many penalty minutes in most of his seasons. Wayne seemed to lose the ability to think when he got upset. He was like a rabid dog with the intent to kill when he got angry.

Maki developed a brain tumor and died tragically in 1974. His promising NHL career was cut short. It would have been interesting to see him play against the Bruins as his career progressed. He continued to play with a nasty streak. None of the Bruins were really able to make him pay for the Green incident or when Wayne threw down the gauntlet by attacking their goalie here. Maki was a bad man on the ice and it was a shame that his life ended too soon.

Wayne Maki decisive win Fun
N/A
You don't see either the very beginning of this fight or the end of the post-fight brawling although the crux of the fight is shown. At this point in time, Maki is a Bruins-hater, while the Bruins are a "Maki-hater" since the traumatic Wayne Maki-Ted Green incident a couple of years earlier. However, I suspect that Cheevers provoked this fight by either verbally harassing Maki or giving him "the stick" near the net just after the puck was sent out of the Bruins zone when the refs weren't looking. So, Maki snaps and the video shows Cheevers already down on the ice while Maki was standing and connecting on 3 facialpunches upon the face mask of Cheevers. This motivated the Bruins to rescue Cheevers from Maki. So, decisive win for Maki.

I guess everybody was very surprised that the Bruins didn't slay Maki gangland style since he punched Cheevers repeatedly in the face here.
