Brandon Bollig narrow win Fun
6
Brandon Bollig takes exception to a high hit on Matt Stajan thrown by Ryan Reaves, getting him to drop the gloves afterwards. Bollig and Reaves square off and then come together with both guys grabbing on with the left hand. Reaves lands three rights to the back of the head as Bollig just smiles back at Reaves and gets in slightly closer to him. Bollig misses a small right as they grapple and Reaves connects to the helmet with a right as Bollig turns his head away. Bollig and Reaves then miss rights at the same time and Reaves lands a follow up right. Bollig suddenly switches hands and opens up, landing a left to the face and then connecting with another left while Reaves lands a right. Reaves lands a right and grabs Bollig's helmet which forces his head down. Bollig manages to work his head up and after landing a left to the side of the head, Bollig ducks as Reaves misses a right and gets in close. They wrestle and Reaves removes Bollig's helmet but Bollig throws two lefts and connects with one to the face as they get up against the bench boards. Bollig lands two lefts again to the face while Reaves gets off the boards and then misses a right. Bollig lands a left and then they agree to let the fight end there. Fairly good tilt between these two heavyweights. Win for Bollig in this round. Reaves took the fight in close after getting the upper hand early but Bollig got the best of it from then on, catching Reaves in the face with several lefts with no reply from Reaves.

Brandon Bollig narrow win Fun

Ryan Raves catches Matt Stajan with a big hit up high along the boards. Stajan is shaking up so Brandon Bollig who is standing nearby immediately goes after Reaves and the two tough guys begin to fight. They square off in front of the two benches briefly before coming together. Reaves lands two quick rights straight out of the gate. They go near the Calgary bench as Reaves misses a right. The two men grapple and Reaves connects with a right to the side of Bollig's head. Reaves lands another right. Up to this point, Bollig has been quite passive as he has just hung on and not even thrown a punch. That would quickly change.

Bollig suddenly comes alive, catching Reaves directly in the face with two quick lefts as Reaves throws a right which glances off the top of Bollig's helmet. Reaves tosses a right which Bollig ducks. Bollig misses with a left while Reaves misses with a right and they grapple. Bollig's helmet falls off and he tags Reaves with a big left that snaps his head back. Bollig smacks Reaves in the face with three more lefts while Reaves just hangs on. Reaves lands a right from in close while Bollig lands a left. They start wrestling and both men are clearly gassed so the officials intervened.

Reaves started strongly but Bollig answered and managed to take over the fight. Additionally, Bollig connected better as his punches caught Reaves in the face while Reaves hit the helmet with many of his blows. Bollig landed more and better to emerge victorious in this tilt.

Pretty good scrap between the two guys. It was Reaves off the start, landing 4 unanswered rights, then Bollig came around and started landing some very solid punches that landed on the button. Both guys traded in close and kept throwing. The camera angle I saw it from was actually pretty close and sweet so it may have made it more exciting that it was, but I'll review the video later and adjust if need be.

Solid fight that I saw coming. Reaves had Bollig on the ropes early landing quite a few strong rights. Bollig grappled a bit and pushed him, giving him enough time to adjust and hammer away. They then got close and started going hard with a few good ones landing on the top of the helmet for both of them. Eventually they got tired out and split. I can see reasoning for giving it to Bollig or calling it a draw, so I'll chalk it up as a draw on the principle of Reaves early, Bollig late.

Very nice fight here between these two heavyweights. Reaves had the early edge, landing most of the punches before Bollig came back later on. This one was too close to saddle either player with a loss - draw.

For once, no one is bad-mouthing Reaves on this site. I don't understand all the hatred towards him and the other Blues (Jackman, Ott, etc.). The Blues are one of the few teams left with a legitimate enforcer. They have always supported fighting. Jackman and Ott may not be the best fighters, but they try to drop the gloves almost every game. Members (including myself) are always complaining about fighting dying now in the NHL. Players like these are trying their best to keep it alive. Sorry for venting, it has just been bothering me for a while.Reply

To me enforcers have died out or are waiting for the asteroid. Players like Reaves, Peluso, and Gazdic are this new wave of tough guys who do not embody the enforcer mantra. They can skate, they can play a tough forecheck, and when needed they can scrap.

I single out Reaves more than anyone; he gets the most flak because he doesn't play a shit game and glide around shaking his mitts like an attention depraved buffoon. He's got 11 points on the year with only a -1 plus/minus. It's hard to have an "enforcer" who can score 10+ points a season and not be useless on defense. Reaves is a hockey player, not a goon, he's a result of the new NHL forcing to guys who centered their game on fighting out.

And I like that. I admired the archaic days of Tony Twist, Craig Coxe, Rob Ray, and Dennis Vial, but other than a fight every five or six games, what use were they? I don't want a McGrattan or a Rosehill--God knows how much I love him--I want a guy who can play some goddamn hockey.

I'm glad someone shares my opinion. For example, I love Derek Boogaard, may his soul rest in peace. Dude was kinda a pylon though. If I could have someone who can skate, shoot, and punch, I want him. I want my team to raise the Stanley Cups, I love fighting and I want a few more to be happening than there are now, but it's frustrating that players who can only punch have no salvageable skills. SUPER frustrating. I hope renaissance men can pop up again.

What's even more frustrating is now is that you have players with zero hockey skills and can't fight for shit (Chris Vandevelde and Pierre-Edourd Bellemare). Players like them shouldn't be in the NHL. You can easily have an enforcer in their spots.Reply

A useful one. Orr and Mclaren turned their game around for the Leafs a couple years ago, they embodied toughness but also skill--I think it was Orr's only year with a + rating.

Rosehill or Sortini for the Flyers comes to mind. Sortini's fighting is appearing to get better, and the dude has been a 10 point fourth liner before--plus Sortini's willingness to go would make the game more exciting. I hope Rosehill's game improves, love the way he fights just hope he can take a step up in his defense.
