Laine gets the puck, and McCabe meets him at center ice with a clean hit. I agree with the announcers, it looks like first, their heads collide, then it looked like Laine's head hit the ice, though not quite a full impact. Props to Schiefele for sticking up for his teammate, but come on, it was a clean hit. Dirty

Mark Scheifele passed the puck to Patrik Laine in the neutral zone. Laine received the pass, and was met almost instantly by Jake McCabe. McCabe crushed Laine with a big, clean open ice hit. Laine would have to leave the game. Dirty

HUGE hit at centre ice. Laine got set up with a suicide pass in the middle of the ice and McCabe stepped up with a massive hit (CLEAN). Then a scrum right after. Laine needed to be helped off the ice. NICE HIT. Dirty

In the old times Laine would just have been told to keep his head up and nobody would even consider any sanctions. Today even in NHL you can expect sanctions when you hit someone into next week. And that is exactly what McCabe did. After the hit Laine did not know if it was a rhino or freight train that hit him. Dirty

I see a lot of contributors lately who object to a guy fighting someone after a clean hit. I have never had any problem with it. Traditionally, enforcers have discouraged guys from plastering stars with clean or dirty hits. I bet guys were afraid to hammer Gretzky with the possibility of Dave Semenko giving payback later on. Enforcers have kept entire teams from landing big checks back in the day. Weaker teams were often afraid to engage the tougher teams in the NHL. Guys would think twice about going all out with big legal hits in those days. Bob Nystrom would often fight guys after legal hits on him. He wasn't wearing a helmet, so people knew what they were going to face if they got physical with him.

Joel Quenneville once landed a clean and good legal hit on Nystrom. Bobby went apeshit on him in the aftermath. Fights after clean hits used to be called old time hockey.

The hit on Laine wasn't dirty, but it had the potential to injure. Thus, his teammate had the right in my mind to send a message. If Byfuglien knocked four guys out of a game with clean hits, someone should have the balls to send a message that it may be wise to think twice about such an approach. What should the team do? Should they say, "Well, nice job Dustin. Smo will be proud of you. Let's take our comeuppance and go home."

I remember reading about several Flyers threading to destroy Igne Hammarstrom if he even touched the puck. The intimidation factor in the game is almost non-existant now. Battleship Kelly stole a bunch of pucks from a team in the warm-ups once. People now expect teams to let skill players be destroyed and have an emasculated response.Reply

I'd have to agree with Battleship here. Guys shouldn't be taking extra runs at stars, riding them hard into the glass, things like that. Even if the rough treatment is legal, I still don't think teams should let it fly. If you don't stop it where it starts, where does it end?

Jake McCabe knocks out Patrik Laine with a colossal open ice hit and Mark Scheifele goes after McCabe. Scheifele shoulders McCabe to his knees and then grabs him as McCabe just wraps his arms around Scheifele. Everyone else piles in and Marcus Foligno takes Scheifele down as he drops the gloves. Scheifele misses a couple soft rights while on top of McCabe and the linesmen come in and break it up. While McCabe threw the big hit, he was shaken up by it too as his head hit Laine's upon impact. That gashed McCabe's cheek pretty good and he wanted no part of Scheifele but Scheifele didn't do much either since other players and the linesmen were fast to get involved.

Almost a great ending...whistle blows and byfuglien wipes out gionta. Huge scrum in lehners net. Lehner swats little out of his way and byfuglien is pissed. Unfortunately the net somehow gets between lehner and buff. Doesnt stop buff from throwing several pinches over the net at lehner. Lehner being of course held back by refs, and foligno on buff Fun

pretty fun stuff for today's game! My wife asking me what happens to goalies who fight/get penalties led me to showing her the old school brawl between the Canucks and Sabres where Sean Burke fought twice within 4 seconds on the clock, since he doesn't have to serve his own fighting major for fighting Barnaby.Reply

This was actually a quite good game with big hits and intensity. As a finn I don't like the fact that our biggest prospect Laine was injured but that's hockey and the hit was 100% clean. Nice to see how the Jets reacted after their leading scorer was taken out; First line center Scheifle dropped the mits and went immediately after McCabe. Compare that how the Rangers reacted when the Lundqvist was rolled over.Reply

Tempers are still high after he huge Jake McCabe hit on Patrik Laine so as the game ends, Dustin Byfuglien barges into the crease, knocking over Brian Gionta and then grabbing Marcus Foligno. Everyone gets involved, including goalie Robin Lehner, who shoves Bryan Little. That gets Byfuglien's attention so he grabs Lehner's mask and pulls it off despite being right in the middle of the scrum and still being held by Foligno. Lehner turns to grab at Byfuglien and then pauses to remove his blocker and trapper. Foligno wrestles Byfuglien into the net, which comes off and a linesman moves in to grab Lehner. Lehner and Byfuglien reach over the net to grab each other and Byfuglien misses a couple lefts as Lehner ducks his head, unable to get away from the linesman. Byfuglien then misses a couple rights as the linesman holding Lehner gets right between the two of them and that halts the fight. Not much here. Two big guys and both were ready to get something going but unfortunately neither could get free.
