Agree. I find it funny how people call it a sucker, especially the way the NHL is these days. Girard comes after Rinaldo with a stick and gets popped with a punch and people complain! haha. No fan of Rinaldo either.Reply

Zac Rinaldo win by KO
Fight called Unfair by Ghis17 on Dec 23, 2017
Reason: Zac Rinaldo suckered Samuel Girard
 Fun
7
Zac Rinaldo throws an open ice hit on Nathan MacKinnon and he's stung, standing still and bent over as Rinaldo gets up after going down from the hit. Samuel Girard approaches Rinaldo from behind, getting the stick on Rinaldo's arm while skating past. Rinaldo turns right around dropping the gloves and grabs Girard with the left hand. Rinaldo lands a right hand that drops Girard to the ice and Girard is hurt. He stays on the ice and covers up as MacKinnon and Erik Johnson come in after Rinaldo. KO win for Rinaldo but this was clearly a suckerpunch. Girard just approached Rinaldo and Rinaldo didn't wait at all to drop the gloves and throw a right which decked Girard. Girard was clearly hurt by the punch and was down for a while.

Typical Rinaldo, if that had been a tough guy coming at him, he would have turned and skated away or kept his gloves glued on while he got his ass beat, but he saw it was a non fighter and immediately dropped his gloves and started throwing. He 100% deserved the beating Johnson gave him.Reply

If you take a look what kind of players typical goons in the 70's and 80's were they're not far from Rinaldo's player type. They weren't always the toughest and biggest fighters like todays so called goons in the Quebec lower leagues but they were nasty, dirty, fearless, vicious and ruthless like Rinaldo although someone would beat shit out of them after their actions.Reply

I'm all for rough and tough hockey. But you need to have some level of respect. And I'm not referring to just this one specific play for Rinaldo being a plug. Watch his highlights and he always runs around and will rarely back it up unless he knows he's going to have the upper hand.

I love the old days, Nilan, Howe, Clarke and the rest of the gang, but in that era EVERYONE was doing it and expecting it.

Yes, the NHL is a pussification of what it used to be, so players aren't expecting it as much, but this also stems right down to the way minor hockey is played now. Coaches getting suspended/fired for bag skating players after a loss. Participation ribbons and even taking hitting out of the game until the kids are 14/15. How are they ever going to get that Edge, short of their ol' man telling them this because he played in a day that was tough.

I'm not campaigning for a softer league, I'd love to see more tilts, clean hits, brawls and the like, but not a sucker punch from a player who really doesn't add to his team. More guys like Iggy, Maroon, Lucic, Stevens, Fisher etc, who contributed to both the scoring/Defense and he physical side of the game are what I'd like to personally see.

That being said, I like Johnson's reaction and pumping of him after. But too many times we see some grease with no repercussions and players don't feel like they are being held accountable, so this will just keep happening. I say bring back the all around two way forward who can chip in moderately offensively and can drop the mitts when needed.

Tony Twist was a goon
Mike Peluso was a goon

Those players did pretty much nothing except fight. They are far more superior then Rinaldo. Rinaldo is nothing. He is a little shit disturber that can't back nothing up. He is almost a Matt Cooke.

Twist may have been an enforcer later in his career, but his first stint with STL and with Quebec he was goon. I don't believe he even got a point with either team.

Rinaldo is neither.

That is certainly true of Twist but not Peluso. Peluso's career high of 15 goals in one season is more than Twist had in his entire career! Peluso had two seasons where he scored 20 points or more. He was a valuable member of New Jersey's crash line in the mid 90's which was one of the better 4th lines in hockey. Peluso was an enforcer but he did a lot more than fight and was certainly no goon.

I respectfully disagree. Peluso scored a dozen goals over his first two seasons and in his 3rd season, he had career highs in goals and points. Now compare that to someone like Twist who was a real goon. Twist didn't score his first NHL goal until his 6th year in the league!

Having a lot of fights doesn't automatically make someone a goon. Bob Probert had over 800 penalty minutes in his first 3 seasons but he also scored 50 goals over that period and even played in the All Star game. Peluso scored 25 goals in his first 3 seasons which was more than double what Twist scored in his ENTIRE career! Yeah Mikey fought a lot but he could do more than just fight.

A goon is someone who is only there to fight and contributes nothing else. Guys like Tony Twist, Stu Grimson, Derek Boogaard, and John Scott were goons. Peluso isn't a goon just because he fought a ton early in his career.

I'm posting offensive stats because it refutes your statement that Peluso is a goon. My argument is that when you look at Peluso's stats, it's obvious he wasn't a goon.

Peluso's offensive numbers prove that he did more than just fight, unlike a guy like Twist who was only there to fight. I don't see why this is so hard to figure out. You said Peluso was a goon who did nothing but fight. I post his offensive stats which proves that to be untrue, then you ask why I post the stats. A goon is someone who is only out there to fight. Peluso clearly did more than just fight which you can tell by looking at his stats. Hope I cleared that up for you.

Erik Johnson narrow win Fun

Zac Rinaldo suckerpunches Samuel Girard and Nathan MacKinnon drops the gloves and grabs Rinaldo. A linesman grabs Rinaldo while Erik Johnson comes in and grabs Rinaldo who shoves MacKinnon down. Josh Archibald hurries in and grabs MacKinnon while Rinaldo grabs Johnson. Rinaldo gets away from the linesman while missing a right as Johnson is completely turned around but quickly straightens himself and grabs Rinaldo who misses a right. Rinaldo stands back but loses his footing and struggles to stay up along the bench boards. Johnson is then grabbed from behind by Oliver Ekman-Larsson while missing a right and the linesmen move in. Rinaldo gets his footing back and leans away as the linesmen pull Ekman-Larsson back. Rinaldo misses a right but Johnson finally gets himself set and misses two rights as Rinaldo ducks and braces himself against the boards. Johnson throws three more rights, landing two as Rinaldo goes to his knees. Johnson tries to drive Rinaldo down into the ice but Rinaldo forces his way back up, almost getting Johnson flipped over the top. Johnson presses Rinaldo against the boards and just shoves his head back as the linesmen step in and break it up. Win to Johnson for landing more punches as Rinaldo never really got himself set despite not being interfered with as much as Johnson was.

Johnson manhandles Rinaldo here and hits him with some heavy rights. I was impressed with Johnson here because Rinaldo got a bit of headstart, then Ekman-Larsson was interfering in a way that also gave Rinaldo an advantage, but in the end Johnson just steps up and punishes the smaller agitator who had it coming.

Honestly I kinda wish someone on the Avs bench would have grabbed Rinaldo's right arm so Johnson could take a bunch of free shots. He takes a bit of a run at your star player and gets the jump on the guy who comes in and one punches him... If I'm an Av I'm looking to make that an unfair fight.Reply

Draw Fun
3
Josh Archibald grabs Nathan MacKinnon at the outset of the brawl and they stay paired off as Erik Johnson fights Zac Rinaldo. MacKinnon gives Archibald a shove to get a fight going. MacKinnon then misses a right and pulls Archibald down, then when Archibald gets up MacKinnon misses a right. Archibald misses a right but loses his balance badly and goes down with MacKinnon landing a right. A linesman comes over to make sure it's over there. Not much of a fight at all, just a few punches and it was over pretty quick. MacKinnon was the aggressor and in control but didn't land much more than Archibald. I'm calling it a draw.

McKinnon looked very physically strong in this fight and got in a couple of rights for the narrow win. He appeared to have been hurt by the Rinaldo hit moments earlier, following which he ended up at the bottom of a pile after a scrum, but he managed to battle through all of that and come up with the win once the players were able to separate and actually fight.
