Reason: Aaron Ekblad never intended to fight back

Aaron Ekblad gives Max Domi a light cross check in the back as they are batting for the puck in the Florida corner. Domi doesn't appreciate it and shoves Ekblad back. Domi gives him another little push and grabs onto his collar with his left hand. Ekblad doesn't respond even after Domi gives him two smacks with his left hand. Domi has had enough of asking nicely and he drops his right glove. Max tags Ekblad with a big right that buckles him and sends him down to the ice. The officials get right in there and Domi is tossed from the game. Ekblad is bloodied and cut up. He is angry after the fact and tosses his glove away in disgust.

Domi ended up getting suspended for the rest of the preseason which frankly is ridiculous (but not surprising in the watered down NHL). Domi was riled up and gave Ekblad every opportunity to react. He pushed him and then gave him two jabs with the left glove. Ekblad may not have wanted to fight but he didn't even try to defend himself in any way. Ekblad just hoped Domi would leave him alone which obviously didn't happen. Ekblad only has himself to blame as he failed to react in any way and he ate a big punch as a result.

I'm scoring it a TKO and not a KO because Ekblad was not knocked out. He stayed down for a moment but he was still coherent. He recovered too quickly for it to be a KO and he even reacted angrily to getting hit. Ekblad got right up afterward which indicates that he was only TKO'd by Domi instead. However, it was still a hard punch that did some damage as Ekblad suffered a broken nose as a result of that big right hand.

You can't really blame Max Domi in this particular instance. His father was famous for being a very tough fighter and Max was undoubtedly taught to stand up for himself. Even though he is known more for his offensive skills, Max is not afraid to drop the gloves if push comes to shove. He wanted a piece of Ekblad who just stood there and did nothing. It's not Domi's fault Ekblad completely failed to respond. Seriously, Ekblad has 6 inches and over 20 pounds on Domi and yet he wouldn't try to defend himself in any way. He deserved to get punched in the face for acting like such a pacifist when playing the game of hockey.

Domi wants to fight but the much bigger Ekblad is too scared to fight so Domi says screw it and pops him with a hard right dropping Ekblad to the ice and bloodying him up pretty good, nice shot by Domi and to me Ekblad had plenty of time to defend himself but chose not too, either way it's a KO win Domi.

HABS' MAX DOMI SUSPENDED FOR REST OF PRE-SEASON

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Domi has been suspended for the remainder of the NHL pre-season after punching Florida defenceman Aaron Ekblad during an exhibition game.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety made the announcement Thursday following an afternoon hearing with Domi.

The punch came at the start of the third period of Wednesday's pre-season game. Domi began tugging on Ekblad's shirt, asking him to fight. With the Panthers star showing no interest to drop the gloves, Domi punched him in the face twice, but still Ekblad didn't respond.

Domi then dropped his right glove and sucker punched him right on the nose, and the bloodied Ekblad dropped to the ice. Domi was given a minor, major and match penalty on the play.

Ekblad was taken off the ice and underwent the NHL's concussion protocol, which he passed.

Domi, who was making his first appearance as a Canadien after coming to Montreal in an off-season trade that sent Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona, met with the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Thursday.

MAX DOMI'S SUCKERPUNCH OFFERS BAD FIRST IMPRESSION WITH CANADIENS

MONTREAL - This can't be the impression Max Domi was looking to make in his first game as a Montreal Canadien, and it might be a while before he gets a chance to make another one.

The NHL's department of player safety will assess just how long it will be before Domi dresses again for Montreal. You have to think chances are good they'll be suspending him for his punch on Florida Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad in the Canadiens' 5-2 loss at the Bell Centre Wednesday.

They would be well in the right to do so.

It was just under a minute into the third period, with the Canadiens trailing by a goal and on the power play, when Domi got tangled up with Ekblad near the Zamboni entrance. The play was whistled dead and that's when Domi tried to goad Ekblad into a fight. The Panthers defenceman wasn't taking the bait, standing passively as Domi took a couple of gloved shots at him, and he was unquestionably caught by surprise when Domi shook off his right glove and punched him barehanded, dropping him to the ice in a heap as he bled heavily from his nose.

That's how both players' nights ended.

From what I saw, and I haven't looked at it closely, I think Ekblad gave him a slash in the back of the leg in the corner, they scuffled a bit and I think we see the rest, said Canadiens coach Claude Julien afterwards. At a certain point, these things happen in a game.

And they often lead to supplementary discipline being handed out to the offending player.

Perhaps in Domi's case it won't be as severe as it could be. Panthers coach Bob Boughner told reporters after the game that Ekblad was forced into concussion protocol by league officials but passed all his tests. He also mentioned that Ekblad didn't sustain any fractures or other injuries on the play, which might enable Domi to escape a heavier suspension.

Domi's suspension history could also factor into the decision, but it's relatively clean with the exception of an automatic one-game suspension handed to him in March of 2016 for instigating a fight with less than five minutes remaining in a game.

But let's be clear: There's no real bright side to this situation for anyone involved.

The 22-year-old Ekblad is Florida's top defenceman and he's already had to deal with multiple concussions over his four-year NHL career. The last thing the Panthers wanted to see was him face-down in a puddle of his own blood - especially in a meaningless pre-season game.

And Domi, who wasn't available for comment after the game, would have surely preferred to have shown off the skills that have seen him collect 135 points in 222 NHL contests. The plucky forward, who was acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade for Alex Galchenyuk back on June 15, was making his Bell Centre debut at centre with his new team, playing in a matchup against an elite pivot in new Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov. In an ideal world, he'd have demonstrated that he could handle that difficult assignment and perhaps pick up a point or two in the process.

But the game started on a bad note for Domi and it only got worse for him as time wore on.

It was just over four minutes into the first period that Domi mishandled a puck that eventually found its way to Panthers forward Evgenii Dadonov and ended up behind Carey Price for a goal. Then, with the Canadiens down 2-1 early in the second period, Domi took an interference penalty that negated a Canadiens power play just 11 seconds after it had begun.

By the time Domi was ejected, just 56 seconds into the third period, he had won only three of nine faceoffs and failed to register a single shot on net in just over 12 minutes of ice time.

When the kid from Winnipeg was dreaming up his first night in a Canadiens uniform, it couldn't possibly have resembled this. And if he's forced to sit out for as many as all five of the remaining games on Montreal's exhibition schedule, it will certainly put a hitch in his process to show what he can do in the middle of the ice.

Any length of absence for Domi also threatens to hinder the chemistry he, Jonathan Drouin and Joel Armia are trying to find before meaningful games are played in October. If it does, this bad first impression will be the least of his concerns.

Domi is a pussy with short man syndrome, anyone who thinks this was a fair fight and Domi shouldn't be suspended is brain dead. You can't sucker punch someone who's literally trying to get away and looking the other direction and expect nothing to happen.Reply

As far as the suspension goes, 5 games off just shows you how the League has changed. Back in the day, the worst that might have happened was a 2, 5, and 10. Maybe a game misconduct.

I have seen sucker shots like that get double minor roughing.

Every year or so I get a reminder why I don't watch hockey any more. Years ago Domi would've got a minor for roughing, maybe an unsportsmanlike as well. And Ekblad would have got a minor for loitering.

Listening to some media people crying, you would think it was the second coming of Jimmy Mann and Paul Gardner.

Good call and I was thinking the same thing, I heard it was a "vicious attack" and "brutal suckerpunch" so I came to check it out and thought, "that's it?". Considering todays game it shouldn't come as a surprise. Stopped watching a few years back myself and don't miss it a bit anymore. That's after being a fan since the 70s. Just not the same sport in any way imaginable outside of it's played on ice with a puck. Everything else has changed for the worse.Reply

This was actually a good start to a scrap, with both men throwing wildly and JH losing his lid quickly. But that's basically where it stopped, with the lineys jumping in mid throws.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, someone is going to get hurt if they do this crap.
