Pierre-Cedric Labrie win by KO Fun
10
This was one of the most destructive KO wins I have seen in a while. The Thrower brothers love to throw down and they generally have a lot of success against the usual fare of fighters in the ECHL. However, the veteran Labrie is a huge man with substantial experience taking on the best of the NHL and AHL rosters. Labrie is a grizzled veteran during a time when the enforcer was valued at the top ranks of professional hockey. Thus, any top fighters of the lesser leagues are likely to find him a most formidable foe.

Labrie and Thrower eagerly went at it off the draw. Josh slipped to his knees early on. Pierre-Cedric missed a shot and landed a solid right. Thrower got up and traded rights with Labrie. He missed a shot and landed an average blow. He missed a punch and landed a partial connect. Pierre-Cedric landed a partial connect and missed two shots. Then, he landed a huge bomb that flattened Thrower.

Josh was out cold, but the focus went on the fact that his brother Dalton wanted immediate revenge. Unfortunately, that fight was marred by referee and player interference. Labrie landed several effective right hands as Dalton was unable to adequately defend himself. Then, the officials wrapped up Labrie and Thrower landed several pot shots. It was a fairly entertaining scrap, but certainly not a fair contest.

This was a very impressive KO for Labrie. Josh Thrower foolishly traded freely with the bigger and stronger veteran enforcer. He paid a heavy price as he got completely blasted by a monster right hand. Pierre-Cedric is one of the last true heavyweight enforcers in professional hockey. He wasn't a great NHL fighter, but he was a respected heavyweight with size and pop in his punches.

Not to disrespect the Thrower brothers in any way, but sometimes the won-loss records of guys in the modern post-enforcer era can be a bit deceptive. Josh and Dalton are top ECHL fighters, but there are not many appearances against guys the likes of Labrie.

Some of the old battlers who competed in talent-rich divisions continue to ply the trade. With the decline of top experienced professional fighters, guys who would have struggled to crack the top ten in previous eras have looked particularly impressive. Trevor Gillies is a guy who comes to mind. Gillies was a very good fighter, but he may not have had nearly the success if he was up against the elites of yesteryear.

Who knows how much longer Labrie will play professional hockey. The Thrower brothers are still young and may continue to play an exciting fan-favorite brand of hockey in the ECHL. The fans will likely continue to flock to see old time hockey played. However, Labrie is a reminder of a glorious era in the not-too-distant past where the biggest and baddest men fought in the NHL. Labrie had some moderate success there and he didn't see any type of tactical expertise with Josh Thrower. Talent and experience won out over energetic youthful effort.

Pierre-Cedric Labrie win by KO Fun
10
An earlier incident in the game had the Thrower brothers riled up and rearing to go with P.C. Labrie. It looks like Dalton and Labrie are going to go, as they're both shaking their gloves and staring each other down, but when the puck is dropped, Josh decides he wants Labrie. He drops his gloves and charges Labrie, who is caught a little off guard as I believe he was expecting to go with Dalton.

They come together and it's a sloppy start, with a couple wild right hands and Thrower falling over at first. He gets back up, and stands in for about 2 seconds of toe to toe, and Labrie rocks him with a short, stiff right hand. Thrower's lights are out immediately, and his legs buckle as he folds into the ice. The way he fell caused him to whip forward, face first into the ice. He is clearly unconcious in that split second, as Labrie lets go and backs off.

Dalton Thrower sees his brother go down bleeding profusely, and this enrages him, as he immediately charges after Labrie, sparking a moment of mayhem as everyone on the ice is jumping in. Meanwhile, the linesman is frantically calling for help for Thrower, who is bleeding all over the ice. He gets up after a bit and skated off with the trainer but there is no doubt that he was hurt badly by Labrie's punch. There was a sizable puddle of blood on the ice where he fell. This was a devastating KO win for Labrie in his first ever ECHL fight, and I'm sure we'll see more fireworks between these two teams as the season wears on. God damn I love the ECHL.

Awesome review Battleship! That was an awesome read, and the analysis was spot on. I have found a goldmine video on YouTube of some 1991-1992 OHL fights, and I would love to get some of them posted up and reviewed. It's hard to find dates, but I should be able to place a few. I know you would love these scraps, as they're some classic toe to toe battles that have never seen the light of day.Reply

Labrie and Josh Thrower went off the face off, and Labrie knocked him out and bloodied him badly. Seeing this, Dalton Thrower went nuts and attacked Labrie. It was a pretty intense moment to be sure.Reply

I was guessing something like that would have happened to make it two on one stoppage.Reply

Gotta give Dalton credit for stepping in after Labrie shit-kicked his brother. It was like Dalton (Patrick Swayze) helping out Sam Elliot in the movie "Roadhouse." I wonder what Terry Funk is up to these days:)Reply
