"And while on the subject of hitting, there was a lot of it last night. Richie Sutter was hitting Anders Hedberg with his right hand. Lindsay Carson was hitting Mark Pavelich with his left. And Pelle Lindbergh was in the process of hitting Rangers goalie Glen Hanlon with his blocker when all hell broke loose.
Dave Maloney led the Ranger charge off the bench, the Flyers eagerly joined in, and three Rangers - Steve Richmond, Maloney, Hanlon - and three Flyers - Lindbergh, Brad Marsh and Carson - were given game misconducts late in the first period.
It started with Sutter elbowing Hedberg. Referee Terry Gregson's arm was up to call a penalty when Hedberg swung his stick in retaliation. Sutter said it was at his head, Hedberg said it was just a slash, but Sutter threw his gloves down and started pounding away.
In the meantime, Carson and Pavelich paired off. Richmond, seeing this mismatch, jumped on Carson, and Marsh, seeing a two-on-one, then jumped on Richmond.
Hanlon didn't like the way that was going, so he left the crease and jumped Marsh. Once Lindbergh, that insidious Swede, saw the other goalie getting in his licks, he went the length of the ice and started working over the entangled Hanlon.
Someone must have yelled, "Hit him with your purse, Pelle," but Lindbergh didn't have one, so he used his blocker instead. Hanlon's face was opened up for eight stitches and the first period ended 40 seconds prematurely. "
