Brian McGrattan narrow win Fun
7
This was the second big win in a row for rookie enforcer Brain McGrattan. McGrattan had just TKO'd veteran tough guy Tie Domi four days ago prior to this game. Although Domi was getting a little long in the tooth, it was still a shock to see him defeated so easily. Now McGrattan engages with Buffalo's resident enforcer Andrew Peters. The two men fought almost a month ago in the first regular season fight for both guys. Peters managed to come away with a slight edge in the fight. Coming off of his victory over Domi, McGrattan is looking to even the series up and he wants the rematch with Peters.

Sure enough, the two heavyweights drop the gloves just three minutes into the game following a goal by Ottawa. McGrattan lands a right as they come together. Both men land two blows as they throw rights back and forth. McGrattan knocks off the helmet of Peters with a left jab and he continues to jab away at Peters who misses with a couple of rights. McGrattan lands a right and Peters follows up with a blow to the side of the head. McGrattan continues to jab away and Peters misses again. McGrattan connects with a right.

McGrattan scores again with a right as well as his left jab. Peters misses with a punch. Peters tries to pull the jersey up over McGrattan's face but it doesn't work out. Peters does manage to surprise McGrattan with a jersey jab of his own that knocks McGrattan's helmet loose. Peters gets in a right as does McGrattan. Peters lands a right as does McGrattan. Peters misses with one and McGrattan lands another blow, knocking Peters off balance and he goes to the ice with McGrattan on top of him.

This was a solid tilt between two players that went on to have quite the rivalry in the 2005-2006 season. McGrattan came away the victor in Round 2 between these men this season. He landed more punches than Peters and his use of the left jab also seemed to catch Peters off guard. The scrap was quite entertaining as both men just traded punches for the duration of it. There was no grappling or wrestling in this fight!

Although he lost the initial fight to Peters, McGrattan evened things up to make the series 1-1 at this point. Avenging his earlier defeat to Peters and soundly beating Tie Domi had to really give the young heavyweight McGrattan confidence. McGrattan went on to have one of the most impressive rookie campaigns ever. He scored wins over Eric Godard, Todd Fedoruk, Eric Cairns, Wade Belak, Donald Brashear, Colton Orr, and Cam Janssen. Additionally most of his fights were highly entertaining including the one with Fedoruk that was the fight of the year.

McGrattan also fought Peters twice more in this season. However he was not nearly as successful as he had been in this particular bout. In Round 3 Peters scored a decisive victory as he hurt McGrattan with a big right hand. Their fourth fight was the only draw in their series during this season. The two rivals would fight three more times in their NHL careers with McGrattan winning the last fight and the other two coming out as draws. The rivalry between these two men was one of the last good player rivalries that took place in the watered down NHL. Incidentally these two men had met before this season. Peters scored a major victory against McGrattan in the 2003 preseason but he also turtled against him during the 2002-2003 season in the AHL. It's unfortunate that rivalries between players (and teams) is almost nonexistent in the NHL today.

Good fight right after an Ottawa goal.

They drop the gloves and square off. McGrattan comes in landing a right to the side of Peters head. Peters answers missing a right of his own. McGrattan missed one back as Peters then landed and missed one as McGrattan knocked off Peters helmet with a jab. They then had an exchange of two rights each. Peters missing both, McGrattan landing one counter shot. They posture at arms length with both using jersey jabs. Peters then came out with a right missing it. McGrattan answered back with two rights landing one. They then continued their posturing with Peters missing another attempted right. McGrattan came up with a good uppercut landing it to the body of Peters. They then both missed rights as both used jersey jabs. Peters threw a big right that McGrattan answered with one of his own sending Peters to the ice. The linesmen came in and broke it up.

Clear win McGrattan as he was in full control throughout this bout landing more and better.

Brian McGrattan vs. Andrew Peters (Rd lll) / Nov 2, 2005

McGrattan and Peters drop the gloves off a centre ice face off and square off in their third NHL encounter. The last encounter between these two was a good tilt that ended in a draw or edge for Peters after he hit McGrattan with a good shot that buckled the Ottawa tough guy. They squared off, McGrattan with his hands down and Peters trying to confuse him with some quick head movement.

McGrattan then grabbed Peters with his left and landed a right to the side of his head, Peters threw a punch back but missed just short of McGrattan's chin. McGrattan quickly fired back but Peters avoided it, Peters threw a shot back that might have just landed. McGrattan missed as he tried to trade a shot back but was able to connect with a hard left jab that knocked Peters' helmet off.

Peters was a bit stunned after this punch and McGrattan was able to land a couple more jabs to the side of Peters' head. Peters ducked his head down and threw a right but was caught on the inside by another of McGrattan's jabs. McGrattan then threw a right that fell short and Peters threw a wild one that fell just short as he tried to hit back and get some momentum back.

McGrattan threw a right that also fell short as both guys were having trouble reaching the targets with the rights. McGrattan started working the jab again as he got Peters with one, McGrattan then looked to just miss with another right after Peters landed two decent jabs of his own. McGrattan then got another jab in on Peters in response to Peters' jabs.

Peters then resorted to a body shot as he landed with the right, Peters then got a good hold on McGrattan's jersey and connected with a good jab but couldn't follow up with the right. McGrattan then threw a right back but neither men could connect once again, Peters threw two rights back at McGrattan with neither coming off as McGrattan had a good hold on his jersey.

Peters then began to fall as he tried to duck a McGrattan right and fell to the ice with McGrattan on top. The officials came in and escorted these two fighters to the box, McGrattan edges this fight after a close first battle. McGrattan rocked Peters with some early jabs but that was just about the only good punches landed in this fight which secures McGrattan an edge.

Narrow win McGrattan.

Second fight of the season for Andrew Peters and Brian McGrattan and like their first it takes place on the faceoff after an Ottawa Senators' goal. They square each other up and McGrattan misses a right as they grab on with the left. Then they trade back and forth with rights, Peters throwing three that miss and McGrattan throwing two and connects on one. McGrattan then starts jersey jabbing and knocks off Peters' helmet. McGrattan continues and Peters misses a right. McGrattan then misses a right and Peters lands a right and McGrattan misses another right while keeping up with the jersey jabs. Peters waits for a couple moments, then misses a right. McGrattan throws two rights and lands one before Peters misses a right. Then they attempt to jersey each other and McGrattan misses a right while neither can get the sweater over the other's head. They jersey jab simultaneously and then Peters misses a right with McGrattan following with a connecting right. Peters then misses two rights and McGrattan lands a right as Peters loses his balance and falls. McGrattan misses a right as he's pulled down too. The referees then come in and break them apart. Edge McGrattan for landing more but more punches missed then connected in this fight. Still it wasn't a bad bout and both were active from start to finish.

This was a good scrap. McGrattan used his left jab effectively and it was a factor in his win. Brian landed an average blow and missed a shot. He landed a partial connect. Peters missed a shot, landed an average blow, and landed a partial connect. He missed a punch and landed a partial connect. McGrattan landed a solid blow and missed two shots.

Brian landed a solid left jab. He was bothering Peters with the left jabs. The blows were coming in straight and with pop. They weren't the wasted window-dressing blows you see when some guys throw meaningless jersey jabs. McGrattan missed a punch and landed an average blow. He missed a few shots and landed a pretty good right hand.

Andrew missed a blow and landed a solid shot. He missed a punch, landed an average shot, and missed a blow. Brian missed a couple of punches and landed an average shot. Peters landed a solid left and missed a shot. He missed a blow, landed a partial connect, and landed a solid right. McGrattan missed a couple of punches and landed a pretty good shot. The refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for McGrattan. he used both hands well. The success with the left jabs led to opportunities to land powerful rights. Peters went with more of a right hand attack. He landed with effectiveness and the bout was close. Brian won the decision by landing with better overall pop.

They drop the gloves right after the faceoff coming from a Havlat goal. They have a nice square off, both fighters faking like they are going to throw the first punch. McGrattan lands a quick right as Peters grabs on. Peters comes back with a right of his own and both fighters exchange multiple right hands. McGrattan lands a right and then comes back with a couple jersey jabs as Peters throws some rights. McGrattan continues with the jersey jabs and lands a right causing Peters to buckle up and land a quick jersey jab and right combination. They exchange rights once again when Peters loses his balance and falls, dragging McGrattan to the ice with him. McGrattan landed one as they were falling. Edge McGrattan for landing more and better punches as well as being in control for the majority of the fight...

Another good one from McGrattan and Peters. Unlike round 1 McGrattan gets the early advantage, and like round 1 a lot of the first part of the fight are right hands that come up short of the mark from both guys. After that they begin to find their range, and McGrattan is clearly getting the better of the exchange. Peters manages to gets some return shots in, but then McGrattan hits him with enough of a flurry to knock Peters to the ice and lands on top of him, causing the zebras to step and save Peters from any further punishment. Good showing by McGrattan in this decisive victory.

Much like the first fight, they stand at arm's length and throw rights back and forth. Most of Peters' shots fall well short, while McGrattan gets a couple of nice ones in, including an excellent uppercut towards the end. Peters falls at the end while trying to avoid a punch, he was certainly not knocked down as the punch didn't even connect.

Round 2.

Both guys start by firing rights, McGrattan with the edge. He then switches to his left and lands a nice one that gets Peters' helmet. Another solid left and McGrattan has control of the fight. Peters tries to mount a comeback, but McGrattan equals him before Peters hits the deck. Good fight.

Pretty nice fight by two tall guys, McGratten and Peters. They each have long arms so that makes it good and they are exactly the same size. It was a pretty close match but I think McGratten won but barely. They each threw a few good punches but McGratten had more punches that hit Peters. It wasn't a classic fight because of the size issue but it was a pretty decent fight. It all ended when the two of them paused for a minute because they were tired, then the ref's jumped in. It looked like McGratten was going to throw another one though but the ref's got in there just in time.

Decent tilt, McGrattan and Peters are throwing some hard shots with jersey jabs in between. At the end of the fight it looks like McGrattan may have landed a KD punch. I would have to see a better quality video or another camera angle to determine this. Either way win McGrattan.

Fitzpatrick sends Varada flying with a huge hit next to the net. After slamming into the ice, Varada stays down for a while. The hit was clean, but still leads his leads to a small scrum. As Varada tries to get back to his skates after everything is cleared up, he's clearly shaken up and nearly falls back down. Fun

In behind the play, two rookies Paul Gaustad and Brian McGrattan are engaged in a fight. McGrattan lands 2 rights before grappling with Gaustad. Gaustad lands a right before taking one from McGrattan. McGrattan then trips on a stick and falls leaving himself vulnerable. Gaustad lands one as McGrattan slips and adds a few more in off McGrattan's helmet before the linesmen break them up.

A narrow win to Gaustad as he edged McGrattan in punches landed. I doubt the result would have been like this had McGrattan stayed on his feet.

Brian McGrattan vs. Paul Gaustad / Nov, 2005

McGrattan and Gaustad drop the gloves behind the play in the Ottawa zone. McGrattan starts off stronger as you might expect letting the right fly and landing with his first shot. McGrattan was able to follow up with another right hand that looked to land firmly to the top of Gaustad's helmet. Gaustad responded with a good right to the side of McGrattan's just before McGrattan landed a similar shot to that of Gaustad's.

McGrattan then slid over a stick dropped from one of the two guys. Gaustad caught McGrattan with a firm right as he was falling off balance. McGrattan looked like he was going to get back up when Gaustad rained down two more right hand punches to the top of McGrattan's helmet. The lino's made there way in and pushed Gaustad away and McGrattan got to his feet.

This was McGrattan's second fight of the evening against Gaustad and it was short lived as he slipped on a stick which prematurely ended the fight. Gaustad was able to gain a few points from this as he was able to outland McGrattan during this process. Gausted gets the edge but it should be acknowledged when looking at the fight cards that the circumstances behind McGrattan's slip was what won Gaustad the fight.

Narrow win Gaustad.

Gaustad clearly frustrated at the score of 9-3 in favor of Ottawa had enough of McGrattan and accepted when McGrattan challenged him. McGrattan got two good rights and got Gaustad bent over. McGrattan looked very calm as he looked like he had full control of Gaustad . But Gaustad came out of no where with a good right to the face of McGrattan. Than Gausted went forward with his left and McGrattan went off balance. McGrattan threw a right as he fell to the ice and Gaustad started pounding away on him as the linesmen came in.

Narrow win to Gaustad as McGrattan was taking it to him but he surprised McGrattan and got him off balance. Gaustad was very lucky in this bout, I don't think he should ever try McGrattan again.

Brian McGrattan and Paul Gaustad come together in the third period and they drop their gloves. Both guys grab on and McGrattan throws three rights early on, landing two as Gaustad lowers his head. Gaustad then gets his head up and lands a right before McGrattan just lands a right but goes off balance. Gaustad then lands three rights as McGrattan can't get his footing and lands on the ice. The linesmen then come in with one holding Gaustad back from throwing more. McGrattan gets up and goes to the penalty box smiling. Edge to Gaustad for landing more punches in this fast scrap with McGrattan.

This was a surprise. Gaustad was able to punch more effectively and he did a better job of keeping his balance during the fight. McGrattan landed two average blows and a partial connect. Paul landed two solid shots and an average blow. The refs stopped the fight after Brian slipped to the ice.

I rate this as a narrow win for Gaustad. He landed with better overall impact to earn the win.

The camera gets there and McGrattan throws 2 punches and Gaustad answers back with one so McGrattan throws 1 more and he loses balance and falls . Guastad then starts punching McGrattan as he is falling, and throws a couple more when McGrattan is down.

It's a draw because mcgrattan had 3 facial punches in total while gaustad had 2 facial punches in total, then at the end, gaustad stiff-arms mcgrattan in the face to force him down to the ice which is a clever manuever BUT overall, everything totals up to a draw here.

Short fight with McGrattan landing a few early before he loses his balance and Guastad lands 2 solid uppercuts giving him the edge.
