Jamal Mayers narrow win Fun
5
Jamal Mayers and Ian Laperriere get out of the penalty boxes after serving their minors and Laperriere immediately bumps Mayers. They shed their mitts and lock onto each other immediately. Laperriere throws five rights and lands three, then Mayers misses two rights as Laperriere goes down. Laperriere gets to his feet while Mayers throws three rights and lands one, losing his elbow pad in the process. Mayers then misses a right and then lands a right while Laperriere misses a right. Mayers misses three rights as Laperriere goes back down with Mayers losing his hold on Laperriere. Mayers tries to get back at Laperriere but the linesmen rush between them and keep them back from each other. Quick fight and a narrow win to Mayers. Laperriere had a decent start and landed a couple punches but they were ineffective. Mayers started throwing immediately afterwards and got Laperriere on the defensive with some strong rights. However Mayers didn't land any cleanly and mostly missed with his punches. Laperriere went down trying to avoid Mayers' punches a couple times, the last one ending the fight. Narrow win to Mayers for landing better and having more control of the fight. Energetic battle between two middleweights.

Jamal Mayers narrow win Fun

Lappy and Mayers threw punches with bad intentions. The replay shows some different angles that the live feed missed. Laperriere missed a punch, landed a solid blow, and landed a partial connect. He missed two punches and slipped to the ice. Mayers landed a solid shot and a partial connect. He missed a blow and landed a solid punch. He landed a blow to the shoulder. He missed two shots after Lappy went down.

I rate this as a narrow win for Mayers. I thought he landed with better overall effectiveness. I don't think it was a TKO. The replay showed that he was losing his balance and got hit on the shoulder. I don't interpret that as a TKO blow.

Jamal Mayers clear win Fun

Quick, spirited bout at center ice. They step out of the penaltyboxes and go at it at center ice. Live feed misses the beginning and it looks like Mayers absolutely shitkicks Lappy. But a replay in the ESPN feed shows the whole fight and has a better angle. Lappy throws the first five punches and lands two or three. Mayers answers and lands a right, Lappy stops throwing and goes to his knees but gets back up. Mayers keeps throwing like a madman but the rest of his five punches or so all look to miss, Lappy is ducking and falls down again. This time the linesmen jump in. I don't think this was a TKO but nonetheless a win for Mayers.

Stu Grimson narrow win Fun
5
St. Louis Blues' rookie, Reed Low drops the gloves with Los Angeles Kings' veteran, Stu Grimson as these two heavyweight enforcers square up in the corner. Low moves in and grabs on with Grimson who quickly throws four rights and lands two. Low misses two rights and tries to get loose while pushing and pulling on Grimson. Grimson ends up ducking under Low's arm and getting partially behind him but Low adjusts his position, knocking Grimson's helmet off in the process. Grimson weakly connects on a right and then they get in close quarters on each other and wrestle. Grimson misses a right and they go up against the boards after gaining some separation from each other. They grapple and move off the boards with Low missing a right before Grimson misses a right. Low then pushes Grimson against the boards and lands a right while Grimson switches hands. Grimson throws two lefts and lands one as Low switches hands and then misses a left while Grimson misses a left. They lock up in close quarters and Low switches hands. Low misses a right as they wrestle and the linesmen jump in. Alright tilt. Edge Grimson for landing more punches than the less active Low.

Stu Grimson narrow win Fun

Grimson and Low decided to have a go. Stu missed two punches and landed an average shot. He landed a decent punch and missed a blow. Reed missed a few punches and landed a partial connect. Grimson missed a punch and landed a partial connect. He missed a blow, landed a partial connect, and landed an average left. Low landed a partial connect, missed a punch, and landed a decent right. Stu missed two punches and the refs stopped the fight.

I rate this as a narrow win for Grimson. He landed more blows and with better pop. He didn't land any punishing shots in the fight, but his blows were moderately effective.

Pretty even bout, both seemed to land a couple of shots. I think the linesmen jumped in a bit too early. Good showing by Low, holding his own against one of the best fighters in the league.

Grimson punches seemed better than Low's were, even though Low held his own against a top 3 fighter in the league at the time.

This cannot be a draw because low did NOTHING. At least grimson landed a couple of marginal punches. Crappy-fight anyway.

Stu Grimson of the Kings and Reid Simpson of the Blues bump along the boards. Simpson throws a gloved punch to the back of Stu's head, driving the Grim Reaper's face into the glass. Grimson wasn't hurt, but he was definitely not pleased.

The officials kept them apart from each other, then sent them both to the sin bins for two minutes (though I didn't see what Stu did to deserve any penalty).

While in the penalty boxes serving their time, Grimson and Simpson make arrangements for when they get out...

Stu Grimson win by KO Fun
10
Stu Grimson of the Kings and Reid Simpson of the Blues, the two teams' designated hitters, leave the penalty boxes after serving the minor penalties for roughing. As play progresses around them, Grimson and Simpson skate directly across the ice to their respective benches. They are exchanging some words as they do so.

Before the two heavyweights hop the boards and go back onto their benches, Stu gestures for Simpson to skate out away from the bench and meet him for a fight. Simpson accepts the invitation (which he would soon regret profoundly).

Reid and the Reaper both shed the mitts and square off right in front of their benches. They crouch and load up their right hands. At the same time, both men go for huge right haymakers. Simpson fails to land, while Grimson doesn't. WHAM, Grimson's fist drills Simpson directly in the face, and the follow-through leads to Stu's forearm and elbow hammering Reid even worse. Simpson's nose is smashed and he is instantly dropped down.

As Reid falls, Stu throws a second punch, but pulls it back when he sees the damage already done to his opponent. Simpson crumples to the ice, knocked cold. Grimson calmly steps over Simpson's body and immediately leaves the ice, looking utterly malevolent but not gloating in the slightest. The Grim Reaper's work was done and revenge was delivered. Revenge was delivered TENFOLD, actually.

Simpson has to be helped up to his skates by a trainer and his teammate Chris Pronger. They escort him off the ice and into the waiting arms of the medical staff. Blood streams out of Simpson's nose and he looks half-conscious. The Blues on the bench don't look happy at all, especially Jamal Mayers; not only are they going to lose the game to the Kings, but the Blues had a front row seat to one of their players being utterly annihilated.

This was one of the greatest, most punishing KOs of all time. It has to rank up there as one of the best one-punch knockouts ever, if not THE best.

Stu Grimson win by KO Fun
10
Late in the game, Stu Grimson finishes a check on Reid Simpson, knocking him down. Simpson doesn't like, gets up, drops his stick and glove punches Grimson in the back of the head, making his head hit the glass. Grimson turns to Simpson who steps back but a linesman gets between them and sends them off for roughing minors. Once the penalties are served, Grimson and Simpson come out of the box and skate towards their benches but before they get there they decide to settle things and the gloves come off. Grimson and Simpson square off and Grimson wades in on the smaller Simpson. They both go to grab on at the same time while also throwing a right too. Simpson's right is short of the target but Grimson lands right on the button and flattens Simpson. Fast, Grimson follows up with a right but misses as Simpson lands on his back and loses his hold of Grimson. Grimson lets go of Simpson, knowing he's hurt and skates off to the locker room. A trainer comes out and attends to Simpson who's got some blood coming from his nose and needs help off the ice and clearly out of it. KO Grimson.

Stu Grimson win by KO Fun

This was a chilling KO win for The Grim Reaper. Simpson missed a right hand. For some reason, he was in a bit of a crouch as he threw his initial punch. He was the shorter man and he put himself right in Stu's wheelhouse. Grimson drilled Reid with one of the best right crosses you will see in a hockey fight. Simpson went down hard and Grimson missed a follow up punch.

There was no question this was a KO. Grimson knew he put major hurt on Simpson. I like how Stu conducted himself in the aftermath of the fight. There was no public celebration. He skated away and was in the locker room before Reid could even get up. He showed a lot of class and there was no malice on his part. He was just doing his job as an enforcer.

Simpson was a mess after this fight. He was down for past a ten count and needed the assistance of the trainer and teammate Chris Pronger in the aftermath. He was gulping air and looked to be dazed and confused. This was a frightening event. It looked like someone getting run over by a steamroller.

Be careful what you ask for. Simpson tracks Grimson across the ice, causing Grimson to call him out and the gloves are off. Both go for the big right, and being that Grimson has the longer reach his right hand lands flush on Simpson before Simpson's shot lands, and he's down for the count, devastating shot by Grimson.

Stu Grimson and Reid Simpson drop the mitts and square off. As Simpson reaches to grab hold with the left, they throw simultaneous rights. Simpson's hits pad, Grimson's drills him on the button dropping him instantly. As Simpson goes down, Grimson tags him again for good measure. Great 1 punch knockout for the Reaper!

Grimson challenges Simpson and Simpson obliges. Big mistake. Grimson skates forward and throws a right that lands right on the button and drops Simpson instantly. The best one-punch KO I've ever seen. Simpson had to be helped off the ice by teammates.
