Steve Ott narrow win Fun
4
Right at the opening faceoff, Gregory Campbell moves off to the wing from centre to line up with Steve Ott and they drop the gloves one second into the game. Ott gets a slight jump on Campbell as they get in tight from the get go. They wrestle around in the early goings with Ott getting inside with a nicely connecting left. Campbell ducks away immediately after and they start spinning. Campbell misses a right and then Ott misses two rights while Campbell's helmet comes off. The spinning continues and Campbell starts jersey jabbing but the linesmen start moving in. Ott lands a right and then the fight is ceased. Not a really good fight as there wasn't much going on and it ended too soon. Campbell was bleeding badly from the nose and has to go for repairs. A couple years ago, Campbell was the recipient of a huge Ott hit and this was also the first time the Boston Bruins were at home to the Dallas Stars since a very rough game that also took place a couple seasons back. This game would turn out similarly.

As a carry-over from this game http://dropyourgloves.com/Fights/GameEvents.aspx?Game=217483, some fighting gets done early here.

Ott gets the jump on Campbell, giving him an advantage that Campbell would not be able to overcome until the end of the fight when the linesman came in. After Ott landed a good left on Campbell's nose, there was a short wrestling match before Campbell landed a few jersey jabs, and right when the two get their rights loose and ready to throw, the linesman come in and stop the fight.

I feel like "narrow win" would be more accurate for such a short fight, but there wasn't any doubt that Ott won this, so I marked it as a "clear win" for him.

Right off the opening faceoff, Greg Campbell and Steve Ott decide to set the tone. They shed the mitts and immediately grapple in close. They tug on each other's jersey and Ott gets his left free and lands a short cross, bloodying Campbell's nose. They spin around and Ott shakes off an elbow pad. Ott lands a weak right as they keep spinning. Campbell is completely tied up but Ott can't really take advantage. Ott tries to rip his opponent's helmet off and after doing so, lands a weak right to the body. Around and around they go. Campbell lands 2 decent jersey jabs and a linesman grabs hold of him. Ott's official is a little slow and Ott takes advantage and rather cheaply lands a pretty good right. Finally, both men are restrained and the fight comes to an end.

Ott controlled this fight, keeping his opponent tied up and off balance. He also landed the only real punches and drew blood. However, I feel this effort is only deserving of a narrow win.

Ott and Campbell decided to go in the rough game. Steve landed a solid left. Greg missed a punch and landed a partial connect. Ott landed an average blow, missed a punch, and landed an average shot. Campbell landed two decent jabs. Steve landed a solid right as the refs were stepping in.

I rate this as a clear win for Ott. Steve's punches had significantly better pop. He bloodied Campbell's nose and some damage was done.

Draw in a crap fight. Cambell was clearly cut before any punches were thrown. Most likely from Otts helmet. These too have history, thus the fight of the opening faceoff.

Right off the draw, Ott landed a solid left jab that starts the blood flowing from Greg's nose. Campbell battles back, and lands a solid jersey jab (not counted in the punch stats here for some reason) but Ott gets the clear win, and it's boarderline decisive, but the linsemen came in, and Campbell actually eats a right as it's broken up.

Not a good fight by any means but Ott won it, no doubt about it. He landed a couple of good ones and bloodied Campbell pretty well, Campbell didn't even throw anything except for a couple of jersey jabs at the end. Clear win Ott.

this should be a draw, and it was a crap fight, lol a 6? but really look at the punches landed, a weak left by ott that cut his eye, and two weak jobs by campbell, where is there a clear win? so what if he was cut, from a shot like that likely and old cut opened up.Reply

Shawn Thornton clear win Fun
7
After Steve Ott and Greg Campbell set the pace with an opening faceoff fight, team tough guys Shawn Thornton and Krys Barch decide to pile up some PIM as well. The puck drops and so do the gloves as the crowd goes wild. They latch on near the blueline and Thornton starts by landing 2 rights to the body as he tugs Barch's jersey with the left. Thornton then lands 2 more rights to the head as Barch barely gets pad with his own pair of rights. They back towards the Boston bench and Thornton lands 2 good rights. Barch misses 2 lefts and barely lands another as Thornton continues to unload with the right. Thornton lands a huge uppercut, followed by a decent straight right. Another uppercut lands as Barch switches to the right and lands a good shot. Thornton keeps throwing, landing 4 more uppercuts to the head and body and putting Barch in a completely defensive posture. Thornton's barrage finally ends and they grapple in close. Barch sneaks his right hand out of the clinch but is unable to do anything with it. More wrestling and jersey pulling before Thornton sneaks in a weak right to the body. They gain a little space and Barch also weakly lands a body shot. Thornton leans in and lands a good right and just grazes his opponent with a followup uppercut. They remain in close and the linesmen get in the middle.

WOW! Shawn Thorton unloaded some serious knuckles on Krys Barch. After the major bombardment, it appeared as if Barch was hoping the linesmen would come in. A couple of times, Barch looked to be stung pretty good. He was never really able to get going as Thornton completely dominated him. This was close to a decisive win but the officials hung back a bit so I must give it a clear win rating instead.

Shawn Thornton decisive win Fun

On the ensuing faceoff after the middleweight bout between Steve Ott and Gregory Campbell there's a heavyweight bout that occurs between Krys Barch and Shawn Thornton. They have a lengthy squareoff and they get their grips with the left on the other's jersey. Thornton throws five rights, landing three and one of them connecting well as Barch misses a right. Barch switches hands and Thornton takes just a moment to get set; then they start exchanging intensely. Thornton throws six rights and lands four with a good one snapping back Barch's head as Barch throws four lefts, lands one and then switches hands and lands a right. Barch then puts his head down and gets in close to Thornton who throws three extra rights and lands two. They wrestle around for a bit and Thornton misses two rights before they gain some space from each other. Barch misses a right and Thornton then throws two rights, landing one before getting inside. However Thornton decides against throwing and calls for the linesmen to come in for Barch. They do so and Barch goes right off the ice and didn't return, as he had a scratched eye. Definite win for Thornton as he landed more and better punches and definitely hurt Barch. Good fight.

Thornton and Barch went right after the puck was dropped. It was the second fight of the game. Shawn missed a couple of punches. He landed an average blow and a solid shot. Krys missed a few rights and a few lefts. Thornton missed a couple of blows and landed a solid shot. He missed a punch and landed a solid right. He missed a blow and landed a couple of solid shots.

Shawn had the right hand working and was especially potent with right uppercuts. Barch landed an average right. He clinched and the men wrestled a bit. Thornton missed a blow and landed a pretty good shot. Krys missed a blow and turned his head away from Shawn. Thornton called for an official to step in and the fight was over. Barch didn't protest and it seemed he had enough.

I rate this as a decisive win for Thornton. He pounded Barch into submission. Apparently, Krys suffered an eye injury that put him on the shelf for awhile.

Immediately following the Ott/Campbell fight, Thornton and Barch fought off the next faceoff.

Thornton started with four rights; two uppercuts that landed, a right that missed, and a right that connected. Then Thornton landed a right, missed a right as Barch missed a left, then the two missed simultaneously again. Thornton landed an uppercut, an overhand right, then landed another uppercut as Barch landed a right. Thornton landed four uppercuts. Barch held on, Thornton couldn't reach with an uppercut, Barch's uppercut didn't reach. Thornton landed another right before missing an uppercut.

Thornton fought very aggressively and looked pleasantly angry in this decisive win over Barch. In the fight, Barch suffered a scratched cornea and fractured orbital. It is clear he is hurting, after the flurry of uppercuts, Barch just tried to hold on, and was leaning away waiting for the refs to break the fight up. Barch was out for three weeks after this fight.

Just after the first fight ends and the puck is dropped, Thornton and Barch decide to drop the gloves. Thornton lands a few uppercuts early and then starts going over the top while Barch mostly just hangs on, Thornton throws 3 or 4 more uppercuts that connect and Barch clings on as the linesmen come in.

Looks like the sheep are following along!
Thornton hammers Barch, as he is clearly upset at Campbell's loss to Ott, and he makes Barch pay! 11-1 in punches landed, and 3 of them BOMBS. How is this not decisive? Thornton calls in the linsemen because he knows Barch has had enough. This is a very 1 sided fight to answer Ott's clear win over Campbell!

Great fight, although a very one sided. Thornton really landed some great punches, early in the fight, the replay on Stars' feed had a great camera angle where you could see him really tagging Barch. It was clear Barch was hurt and done at the end, he was just trying to keep his head away from Thornton's punches so Thornton stopped and waved the linesmen in. Barch went straight to the lockerroom and didn't return. Decisive win for Thornton.

Good one-sided fight. Barch tries to exchange rights with Thornton but he really gets hammered with some good ones. He takes one more right then and clearly that's enough for him as he starts holding on. Thornton sees it and calls the linesmen in. Looks like a decisive win for me.

I don't really think Cooke got dropped either. Although, that's not all that surprising since Cooke was squaring off with his visor covering half his face. It was more of Cooke bailing then the punch Thornton landed. I like Thornton, but he has to have the weakest hands of any HW/LHW in the league. Everytime I see him land a big shot, I'm hoping to see the other guy drop.... never happens though.

I think that punch TKO'ed Cooke. Thornton landed a bomb to the jaw and down Cooke went.

I don't think Thornton is a pillow puncher, someone like Prust, I'm just surprised he hasn't dropped many guys.

How is Prust a pillow puncher and Thorton isn't? They both can't knock people down. Although I did hear Barch suffered some facial fractures or something, Thornton has had a ton of fights with how many has resulted in a TKO/KO? I think Prust and Thorton are the same. Both very good technical fighters, but have no power what-so-ever. I like them both, but neither one seems to be able to drop someone. That has to be attributed to their lack of power.

Adam McQuaid win by TKO Fun
7
After 2 seconds and 2 faceoffs there have already been 2 fights. The crowd is in near frenzy after Shawn Thornton thoroughly pummeled Krys Barch. As the teams again come to center ice for a faceoff, Adam McQuaid and Brian Sutherby decide to get in on the act. They drop the gloves at the blueline and square off. Sutherby initiates the grab and they trade tangled rights with McQuaid barely landing. Sutherby misses a short right, quickly switches and taps pad with the left. They wrestle a bit and McQuaid tries an overhand right but gets blocked. Sutherby lands a right to the body and McQuaid again throws an overhand right that lands decently. McQuaid follows with another right but gets tangled up. Sutherby shakes off an elbow pad and lands a decent right followed by a grazing blow. Sutherby misses a 3rd right as McQuaid lands a decent short right. McQuaid lands 2 more rights as Sutherby again misses. McQuaid lands a hard right to the back of the head. As Sutherby comes up, in an attempt to throw another right, McQuaid drills him squarely in the face. As Sutherby buckles a little and begins to drop, McQuaid nails chin with another good right. Sutherby hits the ice and gets ragdolled a little before the linesmen jump in.

Sutherby had a slight advantage early but he got drilled with 2 big bombs. McQuaid has been quite impressive this season and I enjoy watching him fight. Surprisingly, Sutherby has not done very well, despite being a pretty good fighter.

Now, I see a couple of people rate this a clear win but I say it's a pretty clear TKO. McQuaid landed a BIG right, which clearly stunned and slightly buckled Sutherby. A little jersey jab and another right sent his opponent down therefore he got dropped by a punch which is DYG criteria for a TKO.

Right after the Shawn Thornton and Krys Barch fight, another pair of tough guys, rugged defenseman Adam McQuaid for the Boston Bruins and scrappy centre, Brian Sutherby of the Dallas Stars, also shed the mitts. They square up one another and get a hold with the left each. McQuaid misses a right but then lands a right after Sutherby misses a right. They grapple with Sutherby missing a left, then McQuaid misses a right. Sutherby misses a right before McQuaid misses two rights as Sutherby gets his elbow pad off. Then Sutherby connects on a right and misses a follow up right. McQuaid throws four rights, landing two as Sutherby misses two rights before they both pause. Then McQuaid lands a bomb of a right as Sutherby misses a right and McQuaid follows by jostling Sutherby down while landing a right. The referees hurry on in and break it up since Sutherby is down. Pretty good battle. Win McQuaid for landing more and better punches including a bomb that buckled Sutherby.

Adam McQuaid win by TKO Fun

Third faceoff of the game, third fight.

At first, McQuaid's arm was tied up and he couldn't do much.

Once he got it loose he missed a few punches before Sutherby missed two.

As Sutherby missed his second punch, McQuaid landed one that rocked Sutherby's head back.

McQuaid's next aggressive flurry of rights, though all of them missed, won him the fight.

As he threw three rights, he caused Sutherby to lean away and look away from his opponent. Sutherby then made a terrible mistake by attempting to throw a blind punch, and ended up getting absolutely rocked by McQuaid.

This is a TKO because the hard punch by McQuaid caused Sutherby to drop. Even though McQuaid kept throwing punches, Sutherby was going to go down regardless.

McQuaid and Sutherby threw some punches with bad intentions. Adam missed a blow and landed a partial connect. Brian missed a few blows and landed a partial connect. McQuaid missed a few punches. Sutherby missed two blows and landed a partial connect. Adam landed a solid right that knocked Brian a little off-balance. He followed up with a good right that sent Sutherby to the ice.

I rate this as a TKO for McQuaid. He landed a couple of shots to put Sutherby down. The second blow was powerful and finished the job.

Each team has won a fight 2 second in, so at the 4 second mark, each team decides to try to one up the other! McQuaid lands the better shots, and just overwhelms Sutherby. It was a right-left-right combo that ended this decisively, or by TKO. Hard to tell, but its not good for Suthgerby either way.

Decent fight. McQuaid lands an elbow to Sutherby's face at the end, Sutherby gets stunned and McQuaid easily pushes him to the ice, connecting with a right while Sutherby goes down. No TKO but a definite win for McQuaid. Sutherby lost almost all his fights this season which is kinda surprising to me 'cause I think he's not that bad of a fighter at all.

It looked like only 3 connected facial punches thrown by mcquaid while sutherby threw only 1 connected facial punch. Mcqauid's's 2nd to last punch was followed by a forearm shove which seemed to get sutherby a bit off-balance and then mcquaid's last punch made contact with sutherby's face while sutherby was on the way down. So, not a tko per se but nevertheless an impressive knockdown that even prompted the refs to rush in there to prevent any further damage ...which declares this as a decisive win.

It's the 3rd fight in just 4 seconds as McQuaid and Sutherby square off behind center ice. After squaring up for about 6 seconds they come together and wrestle for a bit as they both get loose. McQuaid gets loose first and throws a couple jabs. Sutherby misses rights but tags McQuaid on the chin which appears to have angered him. After this happens the fight strongly favors McQuaid as he lands two big rights that knock Sutherby to the ice. One of Mcquaids better punches of his career as it is a tko for McQuaid.

The first one ott hits campbell with a good shot to the eye as in the video.

Thorntons fight was all one sided to him.

I missed the mcquaid and ference fight.

It looks like a TKO at first, that was a very good punch, but look in the slow-mo replay and you can see that Sutherby isn't going down until the push from McQuaid. The punch was definitely enough to daze Sutherby, his left hand comes off McQuaid's jersey, but he was still on his feet, and only went down after a push. No TKO because of the push.

Others may call a TKO if someone is pushed down after a big punch, but I disagree with that call. If you want to drop someone who is dazed from a punch, hit them again, don't push them down.

This one took an extra second because Sutherby had to get to McQuaid on defense! These are the fastest 3 fights in the NHL since a line brawl erupted 1 second into a game between Montreal and Buffalo on March 22, 1996.Reply

I am glad to see a "newbie" to DYG review fights the way they are supposed to and I enjoy reading your posts. I want to backup my call of TKO in this fight by using your own words. You said "If you want to drop someone who is dazed from a punch, hit them again, don't push them down." I mostly agree with you however the jersey jab has become an effective weapon in keeping an opponent off balance. As McQuaid landed the big blow, which clearly staggered Sutherby, he continues with the jersey jab to keep him off balance and then drills him again as he is starting to fall. I wouldn't argue against a clear or decisive win, but I feel the punches were what dropped Sutherby, thus the correct call is TKO.Reply

Feb 5, 2011 09:36 ET
If he had landed that last jersey jab, I'd agree, but he misses it, and it effectively turns into a push with his forearm. Do we agree that he is not going down after the first right? Watching the reverse angle slow motion replay, I think it's clear he doesn't start going down until after McQuaid attempts that left jersey jab that doesn't land, but does push Sutherby further off balance. After that, McQuaid is basically landing a right on a guy already falling down.

If the left lands I'd call it a TKO, but it doesn't land as a punch.

You have a lot of desperate attempts to make excuses for guys that got clocked and dropped. What's your agenda? Are you Sutherby's biological brother who was put up for adoption?Reply
Sapunka16
Feb 13, 2011 08:52 ET
Seeing a guy pushed to the ice and not calling it a TKO is far from a "desperate attempt" to make an excuse. A TKO is very clearly described as "The loser dropped because he took a punch. If he fell because he lost his balance or was pulled down by someone, it's not a TKO." The punch didn't send him down, the push did.

If you want to ignore the push, cool, that's your call, and you can write that in your own review.

Andrew Ference win by TKO Fun
6
Adam Burish takes a shot on goal after the whistle had sounded for the offside. Andrew Ference takes exception and confronts Burish. Both men quickly shed the gloves as a linesman attempts to intervene. They avoid the linesman and trade rights with neither landing very well. Ference lands a right to the body as Burish just brushes face with a hammer fist. Ference hits pad with his next 2 efforts. They stand tall and trade rights with both landing well. They trade rights again but this time Burish gets pad and Ference hits the button. Burish drops instantly and Ference crashes down on top. Burish grabs his face and turns away as the linesmen pile on.

WOW again! This fight didn't look like it would amount to much but Ference landed that huge bomb at the end to give it some spice. Back-to-back TKO wins for Boston fighters.

Andrew Ference win by TKO Fun

Adam Burish takes a late shot after the whistle that's stopped by Tuukka Rask but Andrew Ference comes in on Burish and they decide to go. They grab on and right off the bat a linesman tries to break it up but Burish and Ference step away and Ference misses a right. Burish misses two rights before Ference misses two rights, then they trade. Burish throws two rights and lands while Ference throws three rights, landing two with one dropping Burish to the ice. Ference falls on top of Burish who goes down and immediately grabs his face in pain. The officials jump right in and separate the two. Ference clocked Burish around the eye with a right and it dropped Burish down. Decent tussle, the fourth and final one of the game. Burish stayed in the game initially but eventually left and went back home with a broken orbital bone along with also injured Krys Barch.

Andrew Ference win by TKO Fun

After a couple minutes of actually playing hockey, the game's fourth fight began. Burish shot the puck on Rask after the whistle had blown for an offsides call. Ference went over to Burish and the two dropped their gloves.

Ference missed a right, Burish missed two rights, Ference couldn't reach with a right. Then, they exchange simultaneous rights twice. During the first exchange, both landed. During the second exchange, Ference connected with the right that dropped Burish and broke his orbital.

TKO win for Ference since his last punch dropped Burish and there was no further action.

Burish was injured for three weeks following the fight.

Very quick tie up then Ference gets the right free throws one, second one catches Burish on the jaw and sends him down. No slip. Burish gets up though and skates to the box.

Could this be labeled as a KO instead of a TKO? Burish wasn't knocked out cold, but he was dropped from a punch, laid flat on the ice, and was clearly unable to continue.Reply

I think a KO is an acceptable call. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it or think it was wrong.

Raymond Sawada pounces on a loose puck in the neutral zone and heads into the offensive zone with speed. Sawada doesn't have good control of the puck and puts his head down to find it as Daniel Paille comes across the ice lining up a hit. Paille just plows his shoulder right into Sawada's side, hitting fully in the upper body and the head. Sawada flips down to the ice awkwardly and is slow to his feet as play goes on. Paille was called for elbowing and received a match penalty for attempt to injure which also meant a game misconduct too. Big hit by Paille but clearly is was right to the head of Sawada as he had a broken nose afterwards, along with a shoulder sprain from hitting the ice. Emotion

Not going to rate this one because I don't think it's a cheap shot. Any time a guy gets hit in the head because he had his head down, it's his own fault.

Sawada was coming towards the Bruins net, lost control while puckhandling a bit, and looked down. As he is skating towards the net with his head down, Paille skates hard from behind, catches up, and then comes from the side and delivers a shoulder hit, aimed at the shoulders, but makes contact with Sawada's head.

Like I said, if a guy puts his head down and gets hit because he has his head down, that's not a cheap shot. It would be like someone running across a driving range and not expecting to get drilled with golf balls. If Sawada keeps his head up, and still doesn't see the hit coming, it's shoulder-to-shoulder contact, but because he puts his head down, that is what gets hit.

Complete blindside hit. Absolutely cheap. You Boston homers have to accept it. Sawada had his head down coming into the attacking zone with the puck. Paille starts to step up on him. Sawada then drops the puck off to one of his teammates. Right before he can see what is going on, Paille nails him to the ice with an elbow to the face. Sawada hit the ice hard and was shaken up. He did get up, but was still hurt.

This hit had the same motion as Richard's cheapshot. Richard's cheapshot was much later and he only went for the head in that one, but this one is pretty close to it. Sawada should not have had his head down, but Paille did lead with the elbow, went for the head and hit Sawada after he had dropped the puck. Paille should be suspended at least a few games.

If you look at the code, there are a couple of parameters there:

width="1280" height="800"

I just changed that to the following:

width="600" height="450"

I set you up to delete your own messages. You'll see a small Delete link under your name. If you don't like the size, delete the clip and keep re-posting it with different parameters until you are happy with the result.

Daniel Paille throws a big hit on Raymond Sawada, hurting him, and as Sawada lies on the ice, the puck winds up underneath him. Johnny Boychuk tries to pry it out by jabbing his stick under Sawada and so Brian Sutherby comes in and knocks Boychuk to the ice with a crosscheck to the back. Shawn Thornton sees it and turns right around to confront Sutherby. Thornton drops the gloves and grabs Sutherby who also drops his gloves but falls down too. Other players pile in and pair off around them but the linesmen keep Thornton from doing anymore. Fun
