The scenario is both Torres & A. Ference racing to get the puck near the corner. Problem occurs when Torres opts to commit interference when he physically-checks Ference before both guys arrived at the puck. Besides the interference penalty, the check that Torres imposed was a shoulder check by him which is perfectly legal BUT his shoulder makes contact with Ference's head ... the faraway camera-view shows Ference's head snapping backward. Thus, this then would be labeled as a cheap-shot these days with the new rules. Dirty

This was clean, it was certainly not intentionally a head hit, not even deserving of a penalty. Dirty

Adam McQuaid clear win Fun

Torres dumps the puck into the corner and on his way in, he decides to hit Ferrence up high, when Ferrence didn't have the puck. It wasn't an elbow as some are claiming, but it did target the head, and Ferrence didn't have the puck, so it was an illegal hit. (not suspension worthy IMO)

McQuaid comes flying across the ice and slams Torres against the boards. They drop the gloves and the punches start flying. Torres throws 3 right hands, and maybe the 2nd one got in there, but the other 2 were way short. McQuaid who has a distinct reach advantage is just teeing off. He throws 4 straight rights before going underneath, and then back over again with a flurry of 6 more punches. Most of the punches are connecting either with helmet (which got knocked off) or with Raffi's face. Torres fires 2 more back that appear to land, but don't even phase McQuaid who just keeps firing away.

Torres drops to a knee 3 seperate times and McQuaid just pulled him back up as he clearly wants to dish out more punishment. As the linesmen intercede, McQuaid lands 1 final punch to a fallen Torres who is halfway to being sweatered. When he gets his shirt back down, you can see a good sized cut over Raffi's left eye.

The only reason that I didn't rate this as a decisive win, is that despite taking a beating and being sweatered, Raffi kept trying to get back up, even if it was with McQuaid's help.

Adam McQuaid clear win Fun

Raffi Torres and Andrew Ference are going for the puck in the corner when Torres suddenly lifts his shoulder and hits Ference in the head. Ference is staggered and his defense partner, Adam McQuaid immediately charges in after Torres and they drop the gloves. They take some time getting a hold of each other and getting set, then Torres misses a right. McQuaid throws four rights back, landing two before missing a right to the body as Torres misses a right. Torres then misses another right, unable to reach the much taller McQuaid who lands a right that knocks Torres' helmet off while sending him back into the boards. Torres misses a right and McQuaid throws two rights, landing one before Torres misses a right and falls forward. McQuaid throws six rights and lands three as Torres gets up from his knees and hangs onto McQuaid in close. Torres then gets up and lands a right despite his jersey coming up over his head. McQuaid misses a right and then Torres misses a right and falls. McQuaid then misses a right as the linesmen come in and break it up. Nice tilt and a definite win to McQuaid.

Torres clearly lowered the shoulder and targeted Ferrence's head. McQuaid responded to the dirty hit by quickly sticking up for his teammate. Torres traded evenly with McQuaid in the early seconds of the bout. Torres landed three decent right hands, but Adam landed three rights in return that were a bit more powerful.

Torres continued to launch power punches with McQuaid. This was a brave move but not a wise strategy. McQuaid is the bigger puncher of the two and he was finally able to take control in this one. Adam landed a good right hand and Raffi started to crumble. McQuaid missed the follow up and decided to switch to the uppercut. Adam landed with three solid uppercuts and had Torres in some trouble. Raffi's shirt went up over his eyes and McQuaid landed one more good right cross before the refs came in and broke it up.

This was a clear win for McQuaid. He rocked Torres with some good right crosses and uppercuts. While a case could be made that it was a decisive win, Raffi continued to fire back and probably could have continued. The bout was competitive for a while, so I think that a clear win is the right call. Kudos to McQuaid for performing the classic enforcer's role and challenging Torres after a questionable and unnecessary hit on a teammate.

Torres hits Ference in a pretty dirty elbow to the face. Torres skates to the boards as McQuaid skates in and checks Torres as they drop the gloves. Torres gets in an early right but then McQuaid gets in a couple of bombs as Torres hits the boards. Then Torres' head gets caught in his jersey as McQuaid keeps landing uppercuts as the linesman come in and break it up. Torres has blood streaming down from the left side of his forehead as a result. Great fight by McQuaid in a decisive win. It's good to see McQuaid win after a cheap shot by Torres.

MacQuad takes exception to a high hit on Ference by Torres. Torres and Ference are chasing down a puck into the Bruins D-zone and Torres slids across and puts a hit on Ference which catches Ference in the head. Not a really bad or dirty hit but deserving of a two minute penalty, which Torres got. MacQuad drops his gloves and goes after Torres. He pummels Torres with a ton of heavy shots. Torres hangs in there at first but gets over powered by MacQuad who beats him to his knees. Torres gets a huge gash above his left eye.

I give the larger MacQuad a clear win as he easily handles Torres. I give the fight a 6 as it was a good scrap with some excellent shots. MacQuad gets the instigator penalty.

Not a decisive win because Torres was doing a good job fighting back in this bout against Mcquaid. However, Mcquaid was doing an even better job fighting against Torres. Starts when Mcquaid notices a high-hit on his teammate A. Ference which prompts Mcquaid to do his job as an enforcer. Both guys tangle with punches-galore but you can see Mcquaid is more physical seen by both his size & his power-punches connecting facially on Torres although Torres was connecting on his own facial-punches too. Descriptively, Mcquaid uppercuts him well while one of his overhand punches produced a cut over Torres eyebrow. In the end, Mcquaid shoves down Torres down to his knees ... so it was not a punch that made Torres go to his knees. Mcquaid outnumbers Torres in total with the quantity & quality of facial-punches that connected. Clear win.

Dominating performance by the larger McQuaid. He went after Torres, who threw a cheap-shot elbow on Ference. Raffi did get a couple of shots in early, but it was all McQuaid after that, as he opened Torres up by the left eye.

This starts with a Torres shoulder and/or elbow on Ference and a delayed penalty call...McQuaid finally gets his hands on Torres (check out last year's Stanley Cup Finals for more), lands the better punches and opens a cut above Torres' left eye.

McQuaid got the instigator penalty, it was worth it.

Raffi Torres and Andrew Ference are racing towards the boards for a loose puck. Torres then upends Ference with a shoulder that is pretty dirty. Ference then goes into the boards as players start gathering in the area. McQuaid then skates to the boards and drops the gloves with Torres. McQuaid clearly angered by the cheapshit by Torres, as he starts throwing hard rights as Torres goes hammering into the boards. McQuaid then gets Torres' jersey over his head as he starts landing uppercuts. Torres is caught as the linesman break up the fight. This is a good example of what being a good teammate is as McQuaid has Ference's back after the cheapshot. McQuaid with the easy victory.

McQuaid with the beat down for sure, and I hate Torres but that was no elbow, simple well delivered torso twist that you are taught when you learn to hit. Ference was not expecting it and camera angle made it look like it might have been a blow to the head but it was fine. Ference is guilty of much worse.

No elbow, but a definite shoulder to the head on a play that would be called interference had it been a clean hit. I'm a huge advocate for keeping hitting in the game in the highest capacity possible, but that is the type of thing that needs to go.

While I agree that it wasn't an elbow, it was still a cheap hit to the head. And how is Ference "guilty of much worse."
Ference is one of the cleanest, most respected hard nosed players in the game, and he has never been suspended in his career.

He should have been ready for what? A shoulder to the chin when Ference didn't have the puck? What planet are you on?
You're just as bad as the people calling it an elbow!

It was a shoulder check to the head, which is illegal to begin with. Couple that with the fact that Ference didn't have the puck, and you'll see why a teammate sought justice.

Adam may have about 4-5 inches on Torres, and a whole lot of reach, but Torres is 20 pounds heavier than McQuaid, so I wouldn't call McQuaid "larger."

While it wasn't an elbow, it was still an illegal hit to the head, and a hit to a player without the puck. Certainly not suspension worthy, but it needed to be addressed by Ference's teammates.Reply

In terms of fights or anything violent, I agree. Jack is unbearable and incredibly subjective in his calls. But I don't think he's a bad play-by-play man otherwise, he follows the game action well, describes it well and is clear and concise in his interpretation of the game action. In that regard, he is a good play-by-play man. But you are right on the money as far as any type of altercation is concerned.
