Shawn Thornton clear win Fun
6
Neil and Thornton are two experienced veterans in the fight game. They are very evenly matched in terms of size. Neil got off to a good start with a decent right cross followed by an uppercut. Thornton responded by working the right hand. He landed two moderately hard right hands and eluded a Neil punch. He followed with another right with a nice counter punch. Shawn had a good grip on the front of the jersey and this helped him to have greater accuracy with his blows.

Thornton continued his counter punching clinic as the fight went on. He made Neil miss again and landed a few weak rights in return. At this point the two started to wrestle and jockey for position. There was a brief lull in the action. Neil finally landed with a decent right, but Thornton landed with an even harder right in return. Shawn landed with three more right hands and Neil continued to miss his shots. Neil finally lost his balance with a wild haymaker and the refs finally stepped in and stopped the bout.

This was a masterful boxing exhibition by Thornton. His defense was superb and he only got hit with a few decent shots. He landed several moderately hard rights in return. He earned a clear win because he had the edge in punches landed by a wide margin. His counter punching display was impressive. He is one of the best cerebral tacticians in the NHL.

Chris Neil takes Shawn Thornton into the boards and they drop the gloves after. They grab on in fairly close with each other and Neil goes for Thornton's helmet, ripping it off before throwing two rights and landing one as Thornton ducks away, getting separation. They spin and Neil switches hands, missing a left as Thornton just lands a right. Neil misses a straight left and then Thornton throws three rights over the top, landing two. Neil switches hands and misses two rights before Thornton lands a right. Neil switches hands again and lands a left but Thornton lands another over the top right. Neil then switches hands and misses a right as Thornton moves in close while missing a right. Thornton is pushed away by Neil with the left though and they grapple with some separation from each other. Thornton misses a right and Neil misses a weak right before getting inside on Thornton. Thornton tries to get Neil's helmet off but it remains on and then Thornton gets more separation from Neil. Thornton lands a right and Neil misses a right before Thornton throws two rights over the top, landing one. Neil misses a jersey jab and then Thornton gets back in close, forcing Neil to back into the boards. They wrestle and Thornton throws two rights, landing one as Neil shakes off his elbow pad. Then Thornton shakes off his elbow pad and they get separation from each other with Thornton landing a right after. They get back in close and Neil misses a long before Thornton misses a right. Then Neil switches hands and misses two lefts as they get separation and Neil falls down. Thornton lands a right and the linesmen come in. A lot of grappling and wrestling here but not a bad fight between these two veteran heavyweights. Thornton did well defensively, keeping Neil from getting many opportunities to score with his shots. Thornton landed a bunch of blows and not weak ones either though he was never completely free to get going. Win Thornton.

Pretty good scrap, Thornton challenged Neil earlier in the period but this time they find each other after an icing call... Thornton was more active, and landed the better punches, not a clear/decisive win, but a win none the less..

Decent tilt between to good fighters. You could see that Thornton really wanted this one. Neil refused Thorton earlier in the game. Neil and Thornton exchange shots with Thornton get the better punches in. He had 2 or 3 really solid shots. Neil doesn't land much throughout and drop to his knees at the end of the tilt.

Narrow win for Thronton as he handled Neil here. I kind of expected a better battle between these two. I gave it a six for fun as it was a decent tilt.

Nice long fight between these two, not surprising given the long rest they've had. Give the edge to Thornton, who landed better punches and seemed to be the aggressor most of the fight.

"Sketchy?" No, "sketchy" doesn't begin to describe it. Rating this a decisive win for Neil is BEYOND sketchy, it's just plain wrong. It's not a matter of seeing it from a different perspective. It's a matter of someone who is a Senators fan posting a blatant lie, hoping that people who followed would call it a draw instead of a win for Thornton. Obviously he failed.Reply

the way thornton ducks neil's left hands reminds me of the neil's preseason fight with lucic. both guys were able to see that quick left coming, duck it, and deliver straight rights in return. evidently lucic hits a little harder.Reply
Tomahawkchopper
Feb 4, 2012 19:51 ET
Yeah, Lucic is a little bigger than Shawn, and is progressing every season. People forget he was a 19 year old kid fighting guys like Erskine and Ivanans. He even lost to Neil in their first tilt. But in the rematches, Lucic did much better, and now, nobody really wants to tangle with him. Neil just refused to fight him on Tuesday after Neil ran Krejc
After seeing him handle Carkner in a solid scrap, I don't think too many people are going to want to test him, unless they are 4th line pugs paid to just fight.

Adam McQuaid narrow win Fun
7
McQuaid and Konopka go at it in a physical game where both teams are trying to establish a physical presence. Adam threw four or five quick punches with no zip at the onset of the bout. A couple may have partially landed and some of them missed. Zenon was struggling at first to get his elbow pad off. Konopka got McQuaid's helmet off, but Adam landed two quick rights, the second being a beauty which landed flush on the button.

Konopka finally gets going by landing a good right hand. He missed with a follow up and there was a bit of holding and wrestling for a time. Zenon responded with a crunching uppercut to McQuaid's face. Adam came back with two decent rights to the head and the two take a brief break to grapple and solidify their grips. Konopka landed a moderately hard right to the face, but McQuaid responded with an even better right handed counter punch.

The two continued to wrestle in this marathon bout. Konopka missed with a left hand and followed up with a decent right. The two clinch at this point and the refs stepped in to stop the bout. The two look exhausted from the punching and wrestling. This was a good bout where both men were eager to trade blows.

This was a pretty close match. McQuaid earned a narrow victory by getting a slight edge in punches landed. Also, his right hands had more impact than those of Konopka. As for Zenon, he gave a spirited effort and landed the best shot of the bout with a terrific uppercut. His problem is that he is not a big puncher. McQuaid got hit with a beauty of an uppercut and didn't get stopped in his tracks. He immediately roared back and landed some hard rights in return. Zenon is a gutsy action fighter with great heart, but his lack of punching power causes him to lose a lot of fights against the better heavyweights in the league.

Adam McQuaid narrow win Fun
5
Shortly after the Chris Neil and Shawn Thornton fight, Zenon Konopka and Adam McQuaid come together and shed the mitts. They get a hold of each others' sweaters with the left and move to the corner boards. McQuaid throws a series of six fast, short, rights, landing four. They move off the boards with Konopka shaking his right elbow pad off before grappling in tight on the much taller McQuaid. Konopka then connects on a right and pulls the helmet off McQuaid. Then they gain some space from each other while landing a right at the same time. McQuaid lands two follow up rights as Konopka lowers his head a bit. Konopka then moves inside and throws two rights, landing one before McQuaid reaches over and pulls off Konopka's helmet while in tight. They wrestle and McQuaid puts his head down but Konopka connects with a right and McQuaid gets his head back up. Then McQuaid lands a right before losing his elbow pad and they both miss a right at the same time. McQuaid misses a follow up right and they grapple in tight. Konopka lands a right, then lands a right while McQuaid connects with a right. McQuaid misses a right then as Konopka gets some space between them and misses a right. Konopka changes hands, causing McQuaid to lose his balance and fall forward to his knees. Konopka lands a left and loses his elbow pad before putting a headlock on McQuaid as he gets back up and getting in tight. McQuaid gets his head up and out of the headlock, then after Konopka changes hands and misses a right, McQuaid misses a right. They get space from each other and Konopka misses a right before they miss a right at the same time. Konopka lands a right after and then McQuaid misses a right. Konopka changes hands and as the referees come in, misses a left while McQuaid lowers his head. McQuaid then misses two rights as Konopka gets bent over but the referees are there and they stop the fight. Not a good fight and not a bad fight. Win McQuaid for landing better.

Konopka asks and they both drop the gloves and grab each other, they wrestle into the corner and McQuaid misses an under and then delivers 3 quick rabbit rights to the side of Konopka's head, Konopka ties up and they move out a bit as Konopka reaches over and rips off McQuaid's helmet

McQuaid swings the right and connects with a big right to Konopka's face, Konopka misses with a couple of shots and McQuaid gets a slight connection with another right
