Chris Thorburn narrow win Fun
3
There was a battle for the puck along the boards between Michael Frolik and several Bruins' players. Chris Thorburn skated over to help out but the puck eventually squirted free into Boston control. Thorburn gave Zdeno Chara a shove and challenged him to drop the gloves. Chara did not hesitate and the two squared off. The two combatants skated around until they reached the Boston blue line. Chara lunged forward as Thorburn quickly ducked to the side then grabbed Chara's jersey, allowing Chara to also establish a grip. Thorburn missed a left and lost his grip on Chara's jersey. He tried to quickly pull back but Chara's long reach prevented him from doing so. Thorburn grabbed on again then lunged forward to attempt tying up Chara's right arm. Chara fell short with a weak punch when Thorburn did so. Thorburn established a grip on Chara's jersey but couldn't tie up his arm, allowing Chara to throw a right that fell just short. Thorburn missed a quick right hand before each combatant threw a blow, Chara falling just short while Thorburn was able to connect with the side of Chara's head. Both combatants fell off balance but managed to stay on their skates. Thorburn connected with a right hand then missed an uppercut as Chara just held on to Thorburn's jersey with both hands. Thorburn took a big swing that fell just short then ducked down to dodge a blow from Chara. Chara missed with a follow up punch then grabbed Thorburn's helmet. Chara was off balance which allowed Thorburn to slam him down to the ice. The linesmen quickly intervened and escorted both men to the penalty box.

This was a dull fight. Thorburn wanted to spark his team and challenged Chara, who didn't hesitate to accept. After a lengthy square off, the two combatants managed to awkwardly establish a grip and trade punches. Chara threw a couple quick punches that fell short. Thorburn realized he wasn't going to have enough strength to tie up Chara's arm and decided to throw a few punches of his own. Chara decided to grab Thorburn's jersey with both hands, allowing Thorburn to freely swing away. Chara waited until Thorburn put himself out of position before responding with a couple blows. He was unable to land anything and hung on to Thorburn from behind. Thorburn flipped him over and down to the ice, ending the fight.

I judge this as a narrow win for Thorburn. He was the only combatant able to connect with a punch and threw with considerable power. The bout was mediocre as neither man was able to land any real big haymakers and the length of the bout was quite short.

Thorburn vs Chara.

Thorburn and Chara drop the gloves and square off. They skate out of the defensive zone and they latch on. Once they get to an arm's length Thorburn misses a right. They then both throw a punch (Chara a left which lands, Thorburn a right which misses) Thorburn throws another punch which comes up short before throwing a wild uppercut which misses by miles. Thorburn throws another right which misses before Chara lands a right. Chara throws another right which misses and puts him off balance and Thorburn takes him down.

Draw. No case for a win for either combatant in this short boring fight.

Chara and Thorburn had a go. It is always a challenge to fight Zdeno because of his condor-like wingspan. He kept Chris at the end of his reach and Thorburn came up just short with his punches.

Chara missed a right and la left. Thorburn missed with several right hands. Zdeno missed a punch and landed an average blow. The men wrestled to the ice and the brief scrap was over.

I rate this as a draw. It appeared to me that Thorburn's punches all came up a bit short. Chara landed one moderately effective blow at the very end, but it was not effective enough to earn the win. This was a boring fight.

Chris Thorburn initiates a fight with Zdeno Chara early in this game as Chara is in a puck battle on the boards. Thorburn moves in on the much bigger Chara but is unable to grab on while Chara does grab on. Thorburn lunges in and grabs on, missing five rights after. Chara lands a right and tries to knock Thorburn's helmet off but goes off balance. Thorburn takes Chara down and the linesmen get in to break up the fight. Very bad fight and a draw in my eyes.

Zdeno Chara narrow win Fun
N/A
Not sure what precipitated this fight but it looked like Thorburn pursues this short battle with Chara. The first swing by both guys shows Chara landing 1 facialpunch while Thorburn missed. Then Thorburn takes a few more empty swings at Chara while Chara went on the defensive. Then, Chara goes back on the offensive and he lands 1 grazing facialpunch. Thorburn then goes for the takedown because he couldn't handle Chara. Refs then come in. So, Chara lands 1 mediocre facialpunch plus 1 marginal facialpunch in total while Thorburn bails out at the end. Thus, this adds up to a narrow win for Chara.

Thorburn and Chara drop the gloves, Chara has some size on Thorburn. They grab on and Thorburn throws a couple but misses, tries the uppercut but doesn't connect, then Chara comes with a couple but hits the helmet, Thorburn gets one right in and Chara immediately responds with a right of his own and Thorburn takes him down.

It's really tough to fight Chara. His size, plus the fact he really doesn't WANT to fight. He also is terrible at it. I'm shocked he didn't immediately take Thorburn down like he usually does.

Different players have different roles. Ryan Schnell is never going to produce offensively, do you know why? Because it is NOT his role. Different players have different roles based on their talent level and what they succeed at. He is out on the ice to bring a physical presence, and drop his gloves whenever it is necessary.Reply

There is no problem with that. You should see the ferocity in which fans of other teams protect their players. We have had some Bruins homers on the site over the years, but I have been here for close to three years and have seen homers from many teams come and go. For example, we have Flyers fans around here that will be full of outrage if a close call goes against one of their players. That doesn't mean they are homers in that their calls are wrong or biased. There are people who scour the archives to make sure Dave Brown or Rick Tocchet are never deprived of a win. There is not the same fervor if one of the aforementioned guys benefit and get awarded a win from fans making incorrect calls.

Bruins fans are unfairly criticized on this site. So don't listen to the haters.

TO ALL NEWBIES: just because a person wrestles his opponent down to the ice, doesn't give that person a narrow win, as in this case of Thorburn vs. Chara. This is because Thorburn never landed a punch. Thus, all narrow wins given to Thorburn are unjustified here. I'm not a Chara-lover but the correct way is the only way of evaluating fights here at DYG.Reply

I'm glad Bollig isn't fighting. He's a joke. I just get angry every time I watch him "fight" by just hugging tight and praying he doesn't get hit. That said, point well taken here.

Fraser and Wright had a spirited short bout. Matt missed a punch, landed an average blow, and missed a right hand. He missed a couple of punches. James missed three blows and landed a solid connect. Fraser landed a solid connect and missed a shot. Wright landed an average blow and missed a punch as Matt lost his balance and slipped to the ice.

I rate this as a draw. Both men landed a couple of effective punches. It was a brief contest, but there was some significant action before it was over.

James Wright narrow win Fun
4
James Wright and Matt Fraser drop the gloves right off a draw after the scrap between Chris Thorburn and Zdeno Chara. Wright and Fraser square off and then come together with Fraser throwing two rights and landing one. Wright leans away and Fraser misses two rights while prodding with the left. Wright misses a right and then Fraser misses a right before Wright throws two rights and lands one, missing with a swipe to get Fraser's helmet and visor off as well. Fraser misses two rights before Wright lands a right, then Fraser misses a right and Wright lands a right. Fraser falls down and Wright holds back on throwing more as the linesmen come in. A fairly bad fight. Edge to Wright for landing more punches.

Adam McQuaid narrow win Fun
4
McQuaid and Stuart squared off in the physical game. Adam missed a punch and took off Mark's helmet. Stuart landed an average right hand. McQuaid landed a body shot and a solid connect to the head. Mark landed a body punch.

McQuaid was the aggressor in the bout. He threw more punches. He missed three right hands and landed a solid right. Stuart missed a couple of punches and landed a body blow. Adam landed an average right. The refs stopped the fight as the men clinched.

I rate this as a narrow win for McQuaid. He landed a few effective blows to the head. It appeared that Stuart landed an effective shot to the head early on. He missed the rest of his punches to the head and landed a couple of body shots. Adam landed three blows to the head with at least average pop and earned the win.

Adam McQuaid checks former teammate, Mark Stuart against the boards and Stuart goes down. Stuart is angry and wants a piece of McQuaid while getting up. The two rugged defensemen drop their gloves and get a hold of each other. McQuaid throws four rights and lands one, then Stuart misses a right and loses his helmet. McQuaid throws two rights and lands one as Stuart lowers his head. McQuaid tries to shake his elbow pad off but can't and then misses a right after Stuart misses a right. McQuaid then gets rid of the elbow pad and misses two rights. Stuart misses a right and tries to get the helmet off McQuaid but can't and then McQuaid lands a right. Stuart misses a right and then when McQuaid lowers his head, Stuart misses a right. McQuaid raises his head and misses a right. They get in close and wrestle but the linesmen soon step in and put a stop to the scrap. Draw in an average fight.

I love the fights too. Obviously we love the fights, but there are a lot of guys who don't like the way that the NHL is going. I love the game more and will continue to watch the NHL.

I go to Providence College games and high school games at the school where I work. There is no fighting there. I just love the game and there are a lot of guys around here that just want to squawk about how things were better in the old days.

This is like guys complaining about the NBA because Kermit Washington style fights haven't taken place since the 1970's. If you don't like the game, watch something else. I miss Maurice Lucas punching Darryl Dawkins in the side of the head after the hard foul on Bobby Gross. I miss Kevin McHale clothes-lining Kurt Rambis. However, I will watch basketball anyway because I like the game.

You're the type of fan that drives the rest of us nuts. You've It's not just the NHL that's been pussified, it's also the fans. The fact that you would still willingly watch this shitfest called the NHL is pathetic. You accept the fact that this is how hockey is now. What's the solution? Should you have a protest in front of Bettman's office? Would that solve the problem? If you don't like the game, stop watching. I'm calling out the people who are excessively complaining and polluting our site with the nonsense on a regular basis.

I accept reality and don't waste my time with foolish ramblings. NHL GM's and brass don't ask my opinions in making policies and rules. I like my life and it won't be adversely effected no matter what the league decides to do.

Some of us find it harder to accept that our favorite sport (and for many of us, passion in life) has been so forcibly down-trodden at the highest levels by those that were placed in charge of directing it.

In regards to your comparison to basketball, that is exactly what myself and many fans have done. Stopped watching. Now that its a pussy sport where breathing in the direction of another player results in free points, many of us simply do not watch the Hip-Hop Festival that is the NBA anymore.

With hockey though, this is a much tougher pill to swallow, since as I stated above, it is a lifelong passion for many of us.

The whole situation is basically like if auto racing decided next season that they would implement a new 25 MPH speed limit in races, in order to promote safety and highlight the strategy aspects of the sport. What you are essentially doing is saying "If you don't like it, go watch bicycle racing, they still crash in those things don't they?"

Fuck bicycle racing (metaphorically), and Fuck pussy-hockey. We want the REAL product, provided by the best machines in the world. If you can't understand why people would be upset about that, then I really don't know what to tell you, you're a lost cause.

Jan 4, 2014 20:02 ET
The answer is quite simple. This website is the perfect medium for people to display their frustration. The site was made about the rough aspect of the sport, catered towards the people who love the rough aspects of the sport. So it follows naturally, that this would be a prime place for said people to bitch when league brass pisses all over said sport by eliminating the rough aspects.

There really is no better place to voice such concerns, so people will continue to do so. Where better to bitch about absurd suspensions that a site that actually highlights the hits in question, and provides a medium to deliver commentary on the matter? Where better to bitch about the league eliminating fighting that a site that centers entirely around hockey fights?

Point being, this is to be expected. Bitching about the fans who bitch about the league going soft ON A HOCKEY FIGHTING WEBSITE is just as cliche as their repetitive bitching, if not moreso.

I don't like the fact that football is becoming too much of an offensive game. The days of defenses like the 2000 Baltimore Ravens are a thing of the past with the new rules. I make the best of it and am enjoying the exciting Colts-Chiefs playoff game. I'm not going to crab about how things were a lot better when defensive backs like Mel Blount could kill guys on pass routes.Reply

Thats another example of a sport that I have altogether stopped watching because they ruined their own product.

As I said before though, these examples (NFL, NBA) are moot points when you try to compare them to hockey, since you are addressing a group of people that probably hold hockey in much higher regard in their lives.

If your Xbox stops working, sure you will be very pissed, but eventually you will just stop trying to use it and move on. If your kid becomes a crippling drug-addict or winds up on 16 and Pregnant, sure you will be exponentially more pissed than you were about the Xbox, but you can't just throw him/her away quite as easily. Just another little metaphor.

Look. I know you and I see things differently on this point. You contribute on a nightly basis and know the game. I'm just saying that all the complaining gets tiresome after awhile. I would love to see the game played like it was in the 1980's and early 1990's. I'm just not going to let it ruin my life.

Safety is becoming a major issue in all professional sports. Rule changes have been proposed at all levels in sports. I think the thing that will threaten fighting is the lawsuits that are out there. I hate the mentality of class-action suits over safety. If hockey executives think fighting will cost them billions in lawsuits, than it may be eliminated. I will hate it, but what can you do.

Hockey fighting has been allowed up until now because it generates money at all levels. If that changes, then the game will likely resemble college hockey. Again, it won't please me one bit. I'm trying to enjoy the fights we can see and not focus on all the negativity.

I understand what you mean, and am by no means trying to imply that you support the dreadful direction that the league is sending the sport.

All Im saying is, there is a perfectly good explanation for the highly-concentrated bitching that is featured on this site. It all has to do with the target demographic and the severity of the disaster. Not everybody can just let it go as easily as you have managed.

That being said, the fans voice is meaningless, so its all just an inevitability anyways. Im just glad there is still footage of when hockey was hockey that I will be able to show future generations when they call it Ice Soccer.

I'm not looking to silence anyone. As long as people aren't getting personally abusive, we are OK. An occasional heated argument is OK. We are passionate fans. Keep contributing here. You don't need any approval from me. Maybe there is more value to some of the criticisms than I can see.

Indeed it was a good series, and had an ending that will likely be an ESPY finalist. I'm glad that we can agree to disagree (although not even necessarily disagree as much as have a different level of prioritization), and avoid deadlocking in a competition of who can post FUCK YOU FAGGOT BITCH the most times, which is the approach that many here at DYG choose when someone even remotely disagrees with them.

I'm glad you appreciate my contributions to the site, and the feeling is reciprocal.
