This was a very dirty hit from Marchand. Stone had the puck for Ottawa. He was about to rush up the ice. Borowiecki was slowly skating in the other direction. Brad stepped in front of the unsuspecting Sens player. He ducked down low and made contact with the knees. Borowiecki flipped ass over teakettle. He landed on his neck and upper shoulders.

This was a dastardly hit as Mark was minding his own business. Marchand had no business throwing a low and cheap hit. If Borowiecki had the puck, the blow would have been more forgivable. Brad took the opportunity to throw a cheap hit designed to injure his opponent.

It was no surprise that Marchand got a suspension. I was personally shocked that he got only three games. The NHL has been very inconsistent in the approach to player safety. Raffi Torres received a 41 game suspension earlier in the year for an intentional blow to a player's head. Meanwhile, Marchand only got three games for a deliberate attempt to injure.

The major emphasis is on the reduction of head injuries. The NHL has felt the after-effects of the NFL concussion lawsuit and resultant settlement. As a result, there has been a major push to reduce injuries. NHL administrators and owners are concerned enough to try to stay out ahead of the litigation.

I think there is a good amount of hypocrisy in the stance. No one seems to care much about debilitating and life altering leg injuries. Low-bridge hitters have always been detested in the NHL going back to the low-life tactics of Hilliard Graves. Darius Kasparitis and Bryan Marchment were famous for dirty low hits. The legs are the lifeblood of hockey players. A little loss of speed and explosiveness can be career threatening.

Ironically, leg injuries have effected some of the best Bruins legends. Derek Sanderson had knee replacements. Cam Neely's career came into quick decline by a dirty low hit by Ulf Samuelsson. Bobby Orr's brilliant career ended much too soon because of bad wheels. Terry O'Reilly is as tough of a man that ever played in the NHL. I had the opportunity to get a picture with him at an autograph show. He asked me to crouch down so he could remain seated because his knees were bothering him that day.

The NFL is dealing with the unintentional effects of the shift in policy. High hits are penalized, while low hits are a more accepted part of the game. Several high-profile players have come out and said that they would rather get hit high and take the chances on a head injury than to have a debilitating leg injury. Tom Brady was one of the players who suffered a bad knee injury and lost a year in the NFL. The consequences of a low hit can be enduring.

I would like to see a balance. Concussions are a serious issue in sports. Athletes can be trained to hit without making the head the principal point of target. However, the NHL and NFL are going too far in the punishment of those who do land blows to the head. The unintended result is that more guys will try to get away with dirty blows like Marchand. There will always be an element of risk in sports. Education and training can limit the injuries somewhat, but the players should be allowed to enter risky endeavors. More guys probably get hurt in BMX riding or skateboarding. No one is calling to fundamentally alter those sports. Another dangerous profession is the rodeo. Again, people are not going after those sports with vigor. I don't see why the NHL and NFL should be singled out.

I think the punishment for guys like Torres should be a little less, while stick mongerers and low-bridge hitters should be held more accountable for their actions. What happens is guys like Marchand never receive full comeuppance for their dirty actions, so the dirty play is never significantly reduced or eliminated.

This is about as dirty a hockey play as you can have. Marchand intentionally low bridges Boro, who doesn't have the puck and is looking the opposite direction.

Repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat offender, and this should definitely result in a suspension.

Mark Borowiecki and Brad Marchand are going back for the puck and bump into each other. Marchand takes a step past Borowiecki and then turns tightly, catching Borowiecki completely off guard. Marchand ducks low and flips Borowiecki right over top, getting him with a hip right on the knee. Borowiecki lands awkwardly on his head and goes straight to the locker room but would return later. A pretty cheap play by Marchand, he clearly went low and upended Borowiecki with a hit to the knee. Emotion

Marchand's spear on Turris gets a 7, this gets a 7. Neil was given two for slashing, he nailed McQuaid right in the groin.

They were getting into it in front of the net away from the puck at this time, normal chippy pushing and shoving. Neil ended up behind McQuaid with McQuaid fronting the net and Neil got him.

Borowiecki is trailing Chara in the Bruins zone and gives him a light slash to the ankle. Chara quickly turns around and hooks at Boroweicki's ankle as he skates past Chara toward goal as the puck is frozen. They come together at the side of the net and begin to shove. They start to grapple with the gloves on and Borowiecki gives Chara a light gloved left. Chara responds with a good gloved right as Borowiecki attemps to slap his arm away as the two really start to go at it. Chara drops the gloves fast and grabs on as Borowiecki does the same, but his stick is caught between them. Borowiecki lands a left and Chara pulls him forward and Borowiecki falls into the boards from the momentum and Chara cocks back his right hand. Not much of a fight at all as Chara goes for the typical take down here rather than exchange punches.

Mark Borowiecki has a shot deflected wide by Zdeno Chara and Borowiecki shoves Chara after. Chara retaliates with a stick back to Borowiecki and they come together with some shoving while getting in close. Borowiecki then lands a gloved left so Chara comes back with a gloved right that misses but get some space between them. They drop the gloves and immediately grab on with Chara hauling Borowiecki to the ice. Borowiecki tries to get up while keeping his head down but a linesman races in and stops the fight while Chara holds back on throwing more. Draw in an awful fight. No punches thrown, just an immediate takedown by Chara.

The two get tangled up and borowiecki gives chara a left handed jab as they are tussling. Chara responds by jabbing one of his own back at borowiecki and at that point both of them decide to drop the gloves. Chara immediately grabs borowiecki and ragdolls him to the ice. Chara had his fist cocked and was ready to throw punches but saw that borowiecki was in a vulnerable position and decided not to - which was a good thing. A lot of respect for borowiecki for standing up to a guy like chara but it is clear that chara was too strong for him as he was able to throw him to the ice before things even got started.

Not much of a fight here between these two. After some pushing and shoving, Chara used his size advantage to simply knock Borowiecki to tie ice, ending it. Although there were no significant punches thrown, give Chara the edge in this one because he was the more aggressive of the two. Give Chara credit for not punching Boro while he was down.

Max McCormick clear win Fun
4
Tempers are high late in the game due to some dirty play and tough guy, Max McCormick, just called up for the Ottawa Senators goes right after feisty Boston Bruins' forward Landon Ferraro. McCormick pushes Ferraro against the boards and they drop the gloves right away, McCormick getting a slight jump on Ferraro. Ferraro tries to get set and establish a good hold on McCormick but McCormick pushes off of Ferraro to get some separation from him. McCormick throws three rights and connects with two, pauses briefly, then throws five rights and connects with three as Ferraro has trouble getting set. Ferraro pushes himself off the boards which gets McCormick off balance. McCormick tumbles backward and Ferraro comes down on top while missing a right. A linesman then steps in and breaks it up. A short fight between two smallish but scrappy guys. Win McCormick for landing the only punches and having complete control of this tilt.

David Dziurzynski finishes a hit on Kevan Miller in the game's final minute and it draws a crowd as Miller along with Zac Rinaldo and Adam McQuaid take exception to the hit. Dziurzynski ignores it at first, despite taking a couple shoves while Chris Neil gets right into the middle of it and finds McQuaid. Miller tries to get at Neil but McQuaid and Neil drop their gloves. They throw a handful of punches each but the fight doesn't really get going before a linesman gets in there when Neil rakes his hand across McQuaid's face. Everyone on the ice pairs off, Jared Cowen with Maxime Talbot, Mark Borowiecki with Jimmy Hayes, and Miller with Shane Prince. Rinaldo gets together with Dziurzynski as Neil and McQuaid scrap and Rinaldo quickly takes control of the fight. Rinaldo pounds Dziurzynski down while Borowiecki tries to get away from Hayes to jump in. Once Dziurzynski's down, Rinaldo lets up. Borowiecki continues to try to get away from Hayes as Rinaldo and Dziurzynski go to the box but a linesman comes over and helps get Borowiecki to the box though he's talking to Rinaldo the whole way there and gesturing to him as well. The Ottawa Senators were clearly upset with some of the stuff that had gone on earlier in the game, as well as the fact that the Boston Bruins were leading by three goals. With several rugged customers out, Dziurzynski threw a big hit on Miller which drew a crowd and Neil was right in there to go after McQuaid (who'd Neil had gone at earlier in the game). Their fight didn't really get going but Rinaldo paired off with Dziurzynski in the melee and pummeled him. Borowiecki didn't like it and had some words for Rinaldo afterwards but was kept away from him by Hayes. Good brawl between these divisional rivals. Fun

After a game riddled with cheapshots and fights, it all came to an explosive flurry in the dying moments of the game. With the referee crew hopelessly outnumbered fights began to break out all over the ice. A decent sized brawl that was very spirited. These teams do NOT like each other. Fun

Anyone who knows hockey would have seen this coming. Ottawa's frustration just seemed to boil over, as they clearly wanted to start trouble. It looked as if Neil was trying to eye-gouge McQuaid and Rinaldo threw a punch while his opponent was down, so emotions were clearly running high. The next game between these two teams will be interesting. Fun

If you're lucky there will be a fight. The league office in it's infinite wisdom will call both teams and warn them any further rough stuff will result in fines and suspensions and then will tell the refs to call everything and not allow any emotion into the game. So a game that could be good and bring more fans to the sport will turn into a giant bore fest and turn people away.

Chris Neil goes right after Adam McQuaid at the beginning of the brawl and gets a hold of him despite Kevan Miller trying to get in too. McQuaid's hesitant to go but eventually drops the gloves and turns to engage with Neil. Miller backs off at that point as Neil gets in close. McQuaid misses four rights and Neil stands back a little bit in the meantime. Neil and McQuaid trade three rights apiece, McQuaid landing two and Neil landing one. McQuaid ducks away afterwards though and loses his helmet while Neil switches hands. Neil misses a left and then McQuaid gets in close. Neil rakes his hand across McQuaid's face so McQuaid retaliates with a hand into Neil's face as well. McQuaid ducks away again as a linesman sees Neil's dirty maneuver and steps in. Neil opens up though and lands a left. Neil then lands a left while McQuaid misses a right, and then Neil misses a left before switching hands. Neil misses two rights right before the linesmen get him away from McQuaid. Not much of a fight here as the linesmen broke it up too soon. Dirty move by Neil at the end to rake McQuaid's face. I call it a draw.

Zac Rinaldo decisive win Fun
5
David Dziurzynski's big hit on Kevan Miller sparked the brawl in the midst of the commotion in the middle of it, Zac Rinaldo comes in and pairs off with Dziurzynski. Rinaldo loses his gloves while they're near the Chris Neil and Adam McQuaid fight. Dziurzynski keeps his gloves on initially but they drift towards the corner and then Dziurzynski drops his stick and one glove. However as soon as he does, Rinaldo gets his right hand pumping and Dziurzynski never gets set and never recovers from Rinaldo's barrage. Rinaldo throws a series of nine consecutive rights and lands only three but knocks Dziurzynski's helmet and visor off and gets him to the ice. Rinaldo then lands one last right before letting up. Dziurzynski tries to get up but Rinaldo keeps Dziurzynski down and says something to him. All Rinaldo here, he punched Dziurzynski to the ice and Dziurzynski never had his balance and never threw a punch.
