Blindside hit close to Backes' head. He stays down for quite awhile and helped off, most likely a concussion Dirty

William Carrier clear win
Fight called Unfair by CrazyPsycho on Dec 29, 2016

McQuaid went after Carrier as payback for a hit on Backes. Carrier is ready for it and they drop the gloves but the refs are in immediately to try and stop it. However they do a really bad job of it. Both guys exchanged some punches over the refs, eventually McQuaid gets tied up but they don't tie up Carrier's right arm and he starts unloading with punches, including a big one that buckles McQuaid's knees. Carrier landed more but McQuaid's ability to defend himself was impaired by the meddling refs.

William Carrier rocks David Backes with a hit to the head so Adam McQuaid rushes to his teammate's defense. Carrier turns to see McQuaid coming in and they both drop the gloves with Josh Gorges almost getting stuck between them. Carrier grabs on with McQuaid and leans away as McQuaid misses three rights and is then grabbed by a linesman. McQuaid tries to get loose and misses a right, then Carrier misses a right as the linesmen reach between them. McQuaid misses a right before Carrier misses a right, then Carrier and McQuaid miss rights at the same time. However McQuaid is restrained by one linesman from then on while Carrier is still free and keeps on throwing. Carrier throws six rights and lands four, one catching McQuaid directly in the face and buckling him. Carrier is grabbed by the other linesman then but lands one last right before being pulled away from McQuaid. McQuaid is furious with the linesmen after the fight and has to go the dressing room cut from Carrier's punches when the linesmen were between them. Both these guys wanted to go but the linesmen hurried in and didn't let the fight go on. However Carrier didn't stop while McQuaid was restrained and caught with several rights.

McQuaid wants a piece of Carrier after a blindside hit to Backes earlier in the period. They drop the gloves quickly and begin throwing punches when the linesmen jump in and try to break it up. Carrier connected with a big punch on McQuaid when McQuaid was tied up by one of the linesmen. McQuaid had no way of protecting himself in this situation as the linesman had him tied up by the arm. This was a classic example of why the linesmen need to let two players fight if they want to fight. This league is becoming softer and softer each year.

Mcquaid goes after carrier for a dirtyish hit on backes a couple minutes prior. The refs manage to cluster the fight up but dont tie carrier up well enough and he lands a big right that wobbles Mcquaid. Unfair.

This fight was definitely unfair, and the linesmen just exacerbated the issue by not getting out of the way once the players were engaged. By holding onto the players, it allowed one player to take advantage of the situation by throwing punches that cannot be defended by the opponent. The League needs to address this kind of scenario.

This is a prime example of why refs shouldn't intervene early during a fight. They were in the midst of it, and the refs intervened, which could've easily injured one of the refs if they were hit with a stray punch. The next thing done wrong is one of the refs fails to correctly contain William Carrier, who breaks free and gets several free shots on McQuaid, who is being bear hugged by another official. Poor reffing job in an otherwise decent fight.

Call this fight unfair. Only ones who won were the linesmen. They very nearly got McQuaid hurt right there with this nonsense diving in to stop fights at all costs. Unreal.Reply

The NHL has to address this. Once two guys drop the gloves and start to fight the refs are supposed to back up. Get the officials together and drive this point home. Someone will get hurt badly not being able to defend themselves. This is not what hockey is about.Reply

No for the longest time he went without a visor most of his career, however he's wearing it due to a eye injury at this time

I'm happy Carrier kept throwing once the linesmen came in. It's the only way this epidemic of linesmen jumping in will stop. Too bad McQuaid had to get punched in the face due to their poor professionalism.Reply

I hate seeing linesmen do this but I'd be lying if I said I didn't slightly enjoy seeing Adam McQuaid take some punishment from a far lesser fighter in William Carrier, even in such unfair circumstances.

McQuaid is undoubtedly a good fighter and the kind of tough defenseman we all like but McQuaid seems very eager to throw punches with guys like Carrier, Shane Harper, Nick Schultz, Raffi Torres, Dwight King, Ryan White, and T.J. Oshie or drop the gloves with middleweights like Eric Nystrom, Steve Oleksy, Matt Hendricks, Nate Thompson, or Mark Stuart. McQuaid's strategy seems to shift when it's Chris Neil or Shawn Thornton who want to go to defend their teammate and is more reluctant when it's John Scott who hit a teammate.

Don't take this as me hating on McQuaid because I'd take him on my team any day but he's avoided criticism for picking his spots and having some pretty weak opponents on his fight card over the years from the good folks on this site. Hes not as bad as others in that regard but it seems to go unnoticed. He's a very capable fighter and he's proven he can hang with most anyone in today's watered down NHL but I wish he'd go with better competition more often.
