Mark Barberio has a shot stopped by Tuukka Rask and goes to the net. A backchecking Matt Beleskey comes in and plants a crosscheck into Barberio who doesn't like it. They shove and Beleskey drops the gloves, inviting Barberio to do the same. Barberio drops the gloves and Beleskey throws two rights, landing one as Barberio stands a ways back. Beleskey pauses and then misses a right with Barberio missing a right immediately afterwards. Barberio is thrown off balance and Beleskey falls over top of Barberio while missing a right. Draw in a bad, short, scrap.

Very standard hockey play that happens often through the course of the game. Only reason we even remember it happening was because Jost lost his footing at an awkward distance from the boards.

Messy but not dirty seems like the best description for this play.

Adam McQuaid clear win Fun
5
Nikita Zadorov challenges Adam McQuaid for crosschecking Tyson Jost so the two big defensemen drop their gloves and square off shortly following a faceoff. Zadorov moves in first and they each get a hold on the other's jersey with Zadorov also missing a right. They grapple and Zadorov throws four rights, landing two on the helmet and visor of McQuaid who then misses three rights that knock Zadorov's own helmet and visor off. McQuaid pauses to remove his elbow pad and Zadorov starts prodding with the left. McQuaid throws two rights and lands one to the body before jersey jabbing Zadorov. Zadorov misses a right that gets him turned around and off balance. McQuaid throws three rights and lands two to the face as Zadorov bounces back up, then McQuaid misses two rights before landing a right to the top of the head while Zadorov misses a right. Zadorov gets in tight and shoves McQuaid's head back while McQuaid throws three rights, landing one to the body as he gets wrestled down. From his back, McQuaid throws two last rights, landing one to the head before the linesmen get there. Credit Zadorov for challenging McQuaid for the crosscheck on Jost and standing in there with one of the league's better fights but the fight was well in McQuaid's favour.

Run of the mill fight here between these two. After the square-off they started by exchanging some punches. McQuaid then landed a couple of decent jersey jabs while trying to get his arm free. After that, Adam took over control of the fight until the end. Give the obvious win in this one to McQuaid, as Zadorov was clearly overmatched.

I don't think that this was a good fight at all. Not even run of the mill. Zadorov's punches were a joke, and McQuaid didn't deliver the pounding he should've. Jack Edwards is still a joke of an announcer.

Close early as the two exchange blows without much landing, McQuaid lands a couple nice jersey jab then capitalizes on a Zadrorov slip to land some rigths and close the fight strong, clear win McQuaid.

I'm torn between these two arguments.

On one hand, I don't know how you're supposed to criticize Adam McQuaid. He played physical against a high-level prospect, got challenged, and stood up for himself. No qualms with him winning the fight. If the Colorado Avalanche don't have anyone who can handle McQuaid, who isn't exactly Dave Brown now, that's not McQuaid's or the Boston Bruins' fault. I don't know if that's enough to change a team's mind but the Pittsburgh Penguins, even after winning two straight Stanley Cups, decided to get one of the most (only) intimidating players left in the league because they had grown tired of getting roughed up without anyone capable of answering the bell.

But on the other hand, and it's something I pointed it out last year, McQuaid seems find as many if not more fights against Nikita Zadorov, Shane Harper, and Derek Grant than legit light-heavyweights and tough guys. McQuaid is a very capable fighter regardless but he's pretty eager to get involved when he knows he's going to have the upper hand. Things look to change a little bit when the fight is a bit more evenly matched, and when he's taken on guys who probably were favoured like John Scott, Chris Neil, and Shawn Thornton, the performances by McQuaid were rather lackluster.

Another thing I don't like is how many fans (maybe not here though) will heap praise on McQuaid for winning this fight but neglect to acknowledge Zadorov. Zadorov, a guy who has also fought Matt Martin, Josh Manson, and Chris Stewart since last year, tried to stick up for a younger teammate, probably for no other reason than that he's the biggest guy they have. Zadorov probably knew he wasn't a match for any of those guys, but he dropped them and gave a good account for himself. He could've done much worse but hung in there and took his loss the right way.

The game is so bad that McQuaid is only a handful of game tough, so if he is going to fight he is going to have these guys on his card.Reply

Good on Zadorov stepping up here, he knew he was out-matched but the best his team had to offer, and answered the bell. Respect.Reply

I have had issues with McQuaid's spot picking in the past, especially when you look at his fight card and inactivity last year. However I don't think you can really blame him in this instance. Zadorov challenged him to defend a teammate and McQuaid accepted the challenge. It's not his fault that Colorado doesn't have anyone tough who could step up and take him on. They traded Cody McLeod last year and never replaced him (ironically McQuaid fought 6 days before this fight). At least McQuaid was willing to be accountable here. Although I'm sure it would have been a different story if it had been someone far tougher than Zadorov challenging him.Reply
